It isn't uncommon to happen upon free dating sim games, but the quality often varies. However, one of the best examples of a high quality and worthwhile ones happened to drop in December 2023: A Date with Death.
A Date with Death starts by saying you're ordinary, but have always experienced near-death experiences. Each time, you'd come away without being hurt. However, at the outset of the game, the Grim Reaper contacts you and says he is finally coming to take your soul. You then have a week to interact with him to determine your fate, possibly finding love with him.
While this is a visual novel, it is also a chatting simulator not unlike Mystic Messenger. Grim will talk with you in the client over the week, and those conversations shape the relationship you build. These might not all help shape the ending, but they build up insight into the character and make it feel like you're connecting in a significant way.
It's all handled incredibly well and is quite funny! Grim is quite a character. The formatting is fun. I also loved the fake ads designed to resemble the ones for mobile games littered throughout social media. (The Slay the Princess ones especially are fantastic.)
I also appreciated that A Date with Death is the sort of free dating sim anyone can approach and play. After the introduction, you can choose your avatar's appearance, pronouns, and gender. Anyone can head into a love affair with Death, which really helps with the self-insertion elements. The avatar accessory options even include a hijab, and the layering options also allow multiple accessories in that section. I also didn't expect the ability to choose exactly how your character might be described by Grim or in the narration, so the descriptive words section was another nice touch.
Also, if someone does end up really appreciating the game, there are options to support Two and a Half Studios and get more to do in the game. While A Date with Death is free, there is $6.99 DLC. The highlight of this is the extra ending. However, I also appreciated the additional dialogue added, as it helped with the replays I was already doing because I enjoyed it all so much. The extra customization options are fine, but the script quality and characterizations meant I enjoyed the actual written content and experiences more, and I suspect others may end up feeling the same.
The thing about A Date with Death is I want to hype it up as much as possible after going through the route and buying the DLC over the holidays, but I also feel like talking too much could spoil the experience. You could complete the game in an afternoon if you'd like, savoring everything even the free version of the dating sim has to offer. It's such a compelling and novel little chatting simulator that I found time passed much faster than I expected with it. It was only after my first ending that I bought the add-on to go with it, and I felt it was well worth the extra investment based on the enjoyment I got out of it. But even if someone isn't feeling like going all-in, it's a free title people should consider checking out.
A Date with Death is available for PCs via Steam and itch.io.

The full trailer for Final Fantasy XIV's fifth expansion Dawntrail released during the FFXIV Fan Fest 2024 Tokyo keynote. The full trailer showcases the entire theme song for the upcoming expansion without any cuts or edits. In addition, it gives players a nice glimpse of the new expansion region known as Tural.
The full trailer expands upon the previous version from the past two FFXIV Dawntrail Fan Fest announcements. It shows off some new details, including the first look at the Pictomancer job class. Familiar Scions of the Seventh Dawn member Krile will become a Pictomancer, and the trailer shows her painting with her brush weapon to create a flying creature.

In addition to that, a brand new character is shown as the very end of the trailer. She appears to be a female Hrothgar who is riding the boat alongside the Warrior of Light to the land of Tural. She is the person who will bring and guide the player to the land of Tural for the upcoming competition for the throne's succession.
No release date was given alongside the full trailer. Instead, it has the same release window of Summer 2024. Producer Naoki Yoshida revealed during the Fan Fest keynote an internal release date exists. However, the team wants to avoid another delay like what happened with Endwalker, so it remains internal for now. However, the team remains dedicated and insistent the expansion will release in the summer.
The Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail expansion will come out for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on July 2024.

Square Enix announced the release date window for the FFXIV Xbox Series X and S beta testing phase. Players on the Xbox platform will finally have the chance to check out one of the largest MMORPGs of all time in February 2024.
There isn't an exact FFXIV Xbox Series X and S beta release date just yet, but Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida released a window at the Tokyo Fan Fest 2024. Players on Xbox will have the chance to check out the game and all of the current content available for it during that time.
Yoshida noted Square Enix is aiming for it to appear sometime around February 21, 2024, but this may change. As such, an exact release will come at a later date. Presumably during this time, new players will be able to check out the game through the free trial. In addition, existing players will likely be able to access their account on an Xbox Series X or S.
It is uncertain how long the open beta will last, but players will likely have to purchase the game once the full launch arrives.

At FFXIV Tokyo Fan Fest 2024, Square Enix released a ton of new details and recapped things we need to know about the upcoming Dawntrail expansion for Final Fantasy XIV. There is quite a lot of new content and changes coming in Patch 7.0, which fans can look forward to in Summer 2024.
The Dawntrail expansion will take players to the new region of Tural. It includes two main cities for players to explore: the Central and South American-inspired Tuliyollal and the futuristic-looking Solution Nine. There are also many new dungeons coming in FFXIV Patch 7.0 that will feature some of these areas.
There are two new job classes for players to check out, alongside the max level cap's rise from 90 to 100. The first is the Disciple of War job Viper. This melee DPS class shares gear with the Ninja. The second is the Disciple of Magic Pictomancer. It shares gear with other ranged DPS magic classes like the Red Mage and Summoner. A limited job called Beastmaster is also on the way, though it won't appear at launch.
Here are some of the other major features, changes, and additions in the upcoming Patch 7.0:

During the FFXIV Fan Festival 2024 keynote, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida revealed the new limited job will Beastmaster. It will be added to the game in "the latter part of 7.X."
At the moment, only the name for the role appeared. Yoshida noted when discussing the Beastmaster that the team is looking into a "collection" feature for it. Yoshida also said, "As a limited job, we are proceeding with plans to allow you to play solo or in parties with other limited jobs." He also noted art and more details about it will appear eventually.
When implemented following the Dawntrail 7.0 patches, the Beastmaster will become the second limited job in FFXIV. At the moment, the Blue Mage is the only one available. As it is limited, there are certain duties that aren't available and solo ones aren't available. That job features a mechanic that involves learning spells by watching different enemies use them when fighting and defeating them.
As a reminder, there will be two full jobs appearing in FFXIV Dawntrail as well. One is the Viper, which appeared at the 2023 Fan Fest London. The other is the Pictomancer, which debuted at Fan Fest 2024 Tokyo.
Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC. It is also headed to the Xbox Series X in Spring 2024. The Dawntrail expansion is in development for a Summer 2024 release.
