One of the most important actions to master early on is dodging, which is also known as extreme evasion in Solo Leveling Arise. While dodging might sound like a simple enough move to execute, there's actually a bit more nuance and timing to it in the RPG game than you might think.

Solo Leveling Arise review – far from a Genshin killer

Adapting anime into a videogame always feels like it should be a cakewalk. So many shows use power systems and storylines that go hand-in-hand with gamification, yet too few anime games ever live up to the potential of their source material, often feeling like fleeting diversions at best or empty cash grabs at worst. So does Solo Leveling Arise - based on an anime whose entire plot revolves around the protagonist's new videogame powers - buck the trend? Well, that depends.

     Best office chairs in 2024

The best office chairs can save your posture and make life more comfortable when working or playing for long periods. If, like me, you sit down for a larger part of the day and need the right chair to help your health, we've been trying and testing the top options to help you find the right one.

The best gaming chairs often have a specific look, and this list is home to more subtle designs that look at home in a more professional setting. I've chosen the chairs in this guide for their comfort levels, support, and design. Herman Miller is a well-known name and the go-to for premium seating, but I've been very impressed by newer brands like Boulies and Flexispot. If you're on a budget, affordable options like the Vertagear PL1000 will serve your spine well, too.

When choosing the best office chair, I'd suggest considering how much you want to spend, your physical dimensions (there's no benefit to being too small or big in an office chair), and the look you're after in your office space. Then, take a seat and look through my top picks...

nintendo switch 2 account

In an online investors' Q&A with Nintendo, representatives have confirmed that the Switch 2 successor will continue to use the Nintendo account system. The entire Q&A is available in Japanese on the Nintendo website.

In total there were nine questions asked, all of which focused on Nintendo's current plans for the Switch 2. One of the questions brought up the Nintendo account system, which is how Nintendo intends on maintaining communications with consumers. The Nintendo account system was in development even before the Switch's release, and Nintendo plans on using it for the long-term. This implies that the Nintendo account system will be around even after the Nintendo Switch 2 becomes obsolete.

Nintendo also gives insight on its current and future development plans in other questions. While Nintendo will announce more games in the June direct, it has been diverting its resources on training new employees and working on the Switch 2. This may be why it feels like some of the recent Nintendo announcements seem a lot less exciting than before. Most of the questions focus on how Nintendo plans to continue selling the Nintendo Switch, as well as whether or not the Nintendo Switch 2 will affect sales of the current generation.

More information on the Nintendo Switch 2 will come out in the future.

With 2.2 of Honkai: Star Rail, we now have a Harmony Trailblazer path for our avatar alongside Destruction and Preservation and a "Keeping Up with Star Rail" trailer introducing it. The video features Misha discussing the character with Owlbert and going over the new kit.

Editor's Note: While the Harmony Trailblazer is discussed, there are no spoilers for the Honkai: Star Rail 2.2 Trailblaze Missions in the article or video below.

The video begins by showing both Caelus and Stelle, the female and male versions of our player avatar, in the Harmony path attire. The major change here is a new hat that is used as a weapon. From there, the video looks at Harmony Trailblazer Honkai: Star Rail gameplay footage. It begins with the Swing Dance Etiquette basic attack, which deals Imaginary damage to one enemy. The Halftime to Make It Rain Skill also deals Imaginary damage to one enemy, as well as a second enemy. Finally, the All-Out Footlight Parade Ultimate adds Backup Dancer Effect to everyone in the party to increase break effect. People with Backup Dancer also hit broken enemies a second time.

Here's the full "Keeping Up with Star Rail" Harmony Trailblazer gameplay video:

In addition to the new Harmony Trailblazer character, Robin is now available as a five-star in-game. She's also a Harmony character, though she is a Physical type that primarily focuses on buffing the party.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices. The Harmony Trailblazer is permanently available in-game for those who clear the 2.2 Penacony Trailblaze Missions.

Hatsuboshi Gakuen The Idolmaster release date announced with opening animation

Bandai Namco confirmed the release date for Hatsuboshi Gakuen: The Idolmaster. The new mobile game, which also forms the sixth "brand" in The Idolmaster franchise, will be available on May 16, 2024.

The company made the announcement during a live stream where it also goes more in-depth into the title's gameplay features. The player will generally have to do multiple playthroughs of the Produce Mode to gradually improve the idol's performance stats and pass the checkpoint exams. Vocal, Dance, and Visual lessons will be the primary methods to raise each stat.

The lessons will have a similar gameplay to The Idolmaster Shiny Colors: Song for Prism, in which the player must release cards to gain points while keeping the energy costs in mind. But while Song for Prism has the player race against time, the gameplay in Gakuen Idolmaster will be turn-based. It will task the player to pass rating thresholds within the allotted number of cards and turns.

Being a free-to-play game, Gakuen Idolmaster will also have gacha elements. Players who are just starting the game will be able to pick an SSR-grade Produce Card based on one of the nine launch characters. The rest will have to be acquired via gacha or gameplay tasks. The game will also provide enough jewels for players to do a 10-pull gacha at the beginning.

An archived version of the Japanese live stream is also available to watch right below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StV2AuBQkno

Hatsuboshi Gakuen: The Idolmaster will be available for iOS and Android mobile devices in Japan, and the release date will be May 16, 2024.

Umurangi Generation Feels More Poignant in VR

When we get a traditional game being prepared for a VR adaptation, I always wonder if it is the right decision. Would it work in VR? Does it need to make that leap? Umurangi Generation is a captivating experience about gradually getting involved in a country and its situation, which means Umurangi Generation VR on the Meta Quest headsets feels like a greater opportunity to witness life in this version of Tauranga Aotearoa.

You're a photographer for Tauranga Express. Rather than delivering packages, you take pictures of certain situations for the company. New Zealand, and the world, is going through some things while you do. As a result, your assignments and purpose gradually change. While initial stages might feel like you're gathering photos for perhaps promotional materials or to accompany more lighthearted scenes, you'll gradually reach a point where who you are and what you are doing may feel like it carries a greater weight.

This means that Umurangi Generation VR handled storytelling and exploration in a very immersive way. You aren't talking with certain figures to learn about tasks. Nobody is holding your hands on your assignments. You happen to live in a world that is gradually going to hell, and your role in chronicling that changes the longer you play. It's a brilliant way of handling things. You're left to your own conclusions and devices. As a result, I felt like I was able to judge what was going on, have my own feelings about them, and really live through the experience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1xXLgUKGRo&ab_channel=PLAYISM

Of course, the way Umurangi Generation VR plays is also part of the reason why this photography sim feels so at home on the Meta Quest line of headsets. I appreciated how many of the actual actions in the game are tied to the same motions you'd make in real life. Lifting the camera to your face, for example. Checking things on lists. Spray painting to leave your mark on the world. There are some very common sense motions here, with help with the immersion.

I was also a little concerned when I came to the VR adaptation, since some light platforming is required to reach certain objectives in the original Umurangi Generation. While there were some bounties in certain stages that felt more challenging in the VR version, with that starting in Stage 5, it generally works pretty well. I was especially impressed that I never felt motion sick while going through areas as well.

While Umurangi Generation VR is good about handling the VR experience, there is some awkwardness involved. I found it impossible to take screenshots on a Meta Quest 3, which is sad considering it is a photography game. Some of the controls aren't as intuitive as you may expect. Taking a photo is incredibly easy. Others really require you to learn how to play, and the tutorial should really be mandatory instead of optional.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ijb0B8WuAk&ab_channel=PLAYISM

There were a handful of odd situations in which Umurangi Generation VR didn't register I'd gotten the shot correctly. This required me to repeatedly rearrange and attempt to get the image for the quest. It happened in one stage involving feathers. In another it wouldn't recognize the word "mix" on a tape. Given some stages only have one instance of a particular request occurring, it was a little frustrating. Especially since I didn't encounter those sorts of issues in the original release.

Umurangi Generation is a game that was never subtle about its message and always conveyed information via the experience well, but playing it in VR on a Meta Quest 3 makes everything more effective. Firsthand exploring the world and encountering both its beauty and horrors is incredible. Especially since the transition from the original game to VR worked so well and came without downsides like motion sickness. I loved the approach and feel like it's a necessary Meta Quest experience.

Umurangi Generation VR is available on the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro and PlayStation VR 2 headsets

Nefertari Vivi Becomes a Child for One Piece RunRunRun Figure

Megahouse transformed another One Piece character into a child for its RunRunRun figure line, as Nefertari Vivi is dashing this way. Pre-orders for the 7,920 yen (~$51) statue open in Japan on May 9, 2024, ahead of her October 2024 debut.

The goal of the RunRunRun Megahouse One Piece figure collection is to show each character as a child, happily running somewhere. The one for Vivi features her in a pink dress with white accents. Her blue hair is pulled back into a ponytail. It's designed to look like she's furiously running through the streets of Arabasta, with buildings and a road on the base. Unlike other items in this line, she isn't carrying anything.

Here's a closer look at some photos of Nefertari Vivi, including a picture of her alongside the past One Piece characters who also appeared in the collection so far.

Here's a list of other people from the series we've seen in the RunRunRun line so far:

There are no hints about who could join the collection next. However, there is a video that shows us all the characters that appeared so far.

The Nefertari Vivi figure will become a part of the One Piece RunRunRun line in October 2024. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll, and Viz Media handles the manga outside Japan.

I've played a lot of mobile games in my time, but few carry the level of presentation and style that Solo Leveling: Arise possesses outside of the HoYoVerse games. This 3D action-RPG adapts the original series quite well, capturing the feel of the world in the process.

Solo Leveling Arise is a mobile and PC adaptation of the original Korean web novel series from creator Chugong. It takes place in an alternate version of Earth, where gates appear from another dimension and monsters pour out into the world. Hunters fight back against these abominations, venture into dungeons, and keep the world safe. The series focuses on the worst hunter in the world and the surprising events that happen to him. This action-RPG picks up immediately from the beginning of the series, as the main character Sung Jiwoo ventures into a tragic double dungeon.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Though admittedly, the tutorial of this game is by far the most disappointing and annoying part, as it holds the player's hand through every little thing. If you've played a mobile game before, you know what to expect in Solo Leveling: Arise. The game forces you to play several missions in a row, upgrade equipment, draw some characters, and the like. However, this particular tutorial felt like it went on quite a lot longer than others like it. If you get past this issue though, the game opens up quite a bit.

Much of Solo Leveling: Arise takes place in with third-person, behind-the-shoulders perspective. Some missions involve a little bit of exploration, but the bulk of the game centers around its exceptional combat. The speedy gameplay, which has 60 frames per second for those who want it on certain devices, has the usual attacks you'd find in this type of title. In addition, there are extra skills, such as a dodge and various AOEs. These additional abilities involve cooldowns, much like you'd expect. Wait a few seconds after using a skill, then you can use it again. The swift nature of the combat means the player always has something to do. You could be using your skills up one moment, dodging AOEs the next, then following that by charging up for your ultimate move. There are even timed attacks that have a small window of opportunity to activate, but deal tons of damage if you carry them out.

Solo Leveling Arise Review
Screenshot by Siliconera

Needless to say, Solo Leveling Arise offers by far the best action-RPG combat out of any mobile game I've played outside of perhaps Genshin Impact. There is plenty of challenge involved in assignments and demands for skillful play there for those who like that aspect. This is especially true if you want to get all three side objectives complete for each mission. Some of these are tough, such as getting two perfect evasions (dodges) in the same fight.

However, not everything about the gameplay is perfect. Unless a patch releases in the future, I highly recommend using a controller when playing on a mobile device or PC. The camera controls are pretty poor in this game for some odd reason. It moves awkwardly, and the lock-on feature doesn't work well at all. I had a huge issue trying to target enemies and keep them in my view for fights with the touchscreen. The game works much better, in my experience, on PC or with a controller.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Outside of the missions, there is a hub for players to hang out in. This hunter base is home to connecting with other players, drawing new support characters, upgrading weapons, and the like. One of the most surprising features in Solo Leveling: Arise is the ability to change job classes a la Final Fantasy XIV. There are various classes tied to the weapon the main character uses.

Each class comes with their own skills, ultimate moves, and the like. I enjoyed experimenting with the various weapon types and classes to find the one that worked best for me in between missions. These missions generally follow the standard progression of the actual Solo Leveling storyline. It has a nice mix of in-engine-style cutscenes and comic book Webtoon-like panels. The animations and art look fantastic, so it is a shame the story moves a bit too fast. It lacks much of the character development of the actual web novel or anime versions. As such, this should act mainly as a supplement for the series, not a full-on replacement.

Overall, I would say Solo Leveling: Arise is one of the most impressive mobile games I've ever played. Unlike most anime mobile games, it adapts the series smartly in a welcome way. The action RPG combat is lightning fast, requires immense skill, and, most importantly, feels fun to use. Though the story moves a little too fast and it plays awkwardly with a touchscreen, the stellar presentation is leaps and bounds above most mobile games these days. Any fan of the series needs to give this a shot on mobile or PC.

Solo Leveling: Arise will release for Android and iOS devices and PC on May 8, 2024.

It looks like Glenn, Lucia, and Matt may end up encountering Rosen again in a FFVII Ever Crisis The First Soldier chapter update

While we know how the FFVII Ever Crisis Crisis Core and original stories will go, The First Soldier parts are shrouded in a bit more mystery, however a new chapter with Rosen appears to be teased for the next update. Square Enix and Applibot teased an update for 7pm PT/10pm ET on May 15, 2024.

The reason this seems to be related to a new FFVII Ever Crisis The First Soldier chapter is that the image shared appears to be a 3D version of the original character Rosen who only appeared in 2D. It seems as though we are looking at him in front of his furnace.

Glenn, Lucia, and Matt met Rosen in chapter two of that storyline. When they did, he was in front of a large furnace he was tending on an island to alert people of danger based on the smoke. The young man's hair was also in a similar ponytail.

https://twitter.com/FFVII_EC_EN/status/1788041138563400098

While we don't know how The First Soldier story will go in FFVII Ever Crisis yet, FFVII Rebirth hinted at some of the events. The game was referenced there.

As for what's happening recently, the FFVII Ever Crisis update for 1.10.0 went out on May 7, 2024. That added the Summon Leviathan. A Golden Week Spring Break campaign just ended as well.

FFVII Ever Crisis is available for PCs and mobile devices.

Moonstone Island Free Update and Magic Man DLC Arrives in May

Studio Supersoft announced a Moonstone Island May 2024 update that will include paid DLC involving the Magic Man and free content for everyone. The add-on and patch will arrive on May 21, 2024, and apparently a Magic Man plush will also follow.

The announcement for the free content included a trailer highlighting some of the things that will appear in Moonstone Island after the update. The 24 new cards were discussed first, with the Black Ice, Booster Pack, Conduit, and Summon ones shown. The post-game content person showed a player character talking to the Magic Man, with relationship hearts below the NPC's name. It looks like the tavern will hold a party event. The Spirits Chiminea, Darclock, Pombomb, and Shrubbin will appear, with Pombomb being a crossover character from Cassette Beasts. Some of the new pieces of furniture also appeared.

https://twitter.com/Moonstone_game/status/1788200117066953009

As for the paid DLC, it includes Magic Man cosmetics and decorations for Moonstone Island. You can make your home look like a Magic Hat House. You can then place a matching rug, Candelabrum, Lectern, Summoning Circle, and Tattered Curtain inside.

As for the plush Magic Man, there are no details about it yet. Studio Supersoft only shared an initial photo of the prototype. It will follow the Fishbo plush that appeared in 2023 on Makeship.

It isn't uncommon for Studio Supersoft to announce a new Moonstone Island update every once in a while. For example, a Winter Update appeared in December 2023. The developer also teased it is working on Fishbo evolutions after April Fools' Day 2024. We will also learn more about the game at the Wholesome Direct on June 8, 2024, which could involve an announcement related to the Switch release.

Moonstone Island is available for the PC via Steam and will come to the Nintendo Switch.
