Pacific Drive review – an essential driving sim for roguelike fans

Since the inception of videogames, there's been an ongoing pursuit to forge a genuine and long-lasting emotional bond between player and character. While the likes of The Last of Us and God of War chase the prestige TV script format, the search for a depth of meaning in mechanics has been undertaken elsewhere, most notably in Ico and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. These ongoing efforts have been met with varying degrees of success, but Pacific Drive opts to replicate a deeper, far more powerful connection: the symbiotic relationship between a driver and their car.

Can you play Last Epoch offline?

Is there a Last Epoch offline mode? One major complaint that fans of recent Diablo games or similar ARPGs have had is that there are times when the game simply won't let them play. This could be for a magnitude of differing reasons, from server overload to scheduled maintenance. No matter what's happening, though, that doesn't stop it being frustrating.

Playing Last Epoch offline should allow players to bypass any worries of disconnection at a pivotal moment. It can be really annoying to be booted unceremoniously from a dungeon while gathering the last affixes for Last Epoch crafting to make the best gear or leveling up their Last Epoch classes to the point of learning a new skill. Below is everything you need to know, including any particular caveats you should be aware of before creating your character.

NBA 2K24 codes February 2024 – all locker codes

February 21, 2024: We checked for new NBA2K24 codes to add to our list.

What are the active NBA 2k24 codes? Every new game in the 2K sports series has a selection of freebies given away, and the latest in 2K's basketball games is no exception. There are plenty of NBA 2K24 locker codes to redeem for new player cards, XP boosts, and MyPlayer gear, among others. However, you'll need to be quick in order to snag them for yourself.

This is because many of the early NBA 2k24 codes are exclusive to relatively small thresholds of players. Some freebies in this series of sports games come and go like whispers in the wind, so you need to act fast. However, we're now starting to get some freebies that are sticking around for longer, so we've gathered these NBA 2k24 locker codes to give you a little boost.

Sons of the Forest Modern Axe location

Where is the Sons of the Forest Modern Axe? The useful tool might be cumbersome and slower to wield, but it does much more damage than your starter axe, so you can chop down trees and build a sturdy base as soon as you find it.

The Sons of the Forest Modern Axe location contains one of the more useful tools in Endnight's survival horror game – not only is it necessary for base building, but it also doubles as a Sons of the Forest weapon. Thankfully, it isn't hidden away in a cave or a dig site, instead just lying out in the open. So, unlike locating the elusive Sons of the Forest shovel, the only difficulty in finding it is knowing where to go on the large Sons of the Forest map.

Do Sons of the Forest trees grow back?

Do Sons of the Forest trees grow back? It may seem like a silly question, but you're in a forest surrounded by trees, right? But wood is an essential resource in building a sturdy, cannibal-safe base, as well as lighting fires and crafting recipes, so you'll need plenty of it.

The best location to focus your Sons of the Forest building and set up camp is somewhere surrounded by trees, both for cover and resources. Preferably, you also want to find somewhere with rivers and streams around you, making it easier to get water in Sons of the Forest and keep your stamina up for carrying all those logs. But whether you build among the trees or out in the open in the crafting game, you might still find yourself running out of building materials. So, do Sons of the Forest trees grow back?

This Logitech mouse is unashamedly heavy, and it is 40% off right now

There is an unavoidable trend with gaming mice right now that lighter is better, but it's ultimately something that comes down to personal preference. Many of the best gaming mice are on the sub-70g level, with the likes of the HyperX Pulsefire Haste weighing just 59g, but our list includes its fair share of chunky options too. That includes the Logitech G903 which we identify as the best left-handed mouse, but in truth, its ambidextrous design makes it great for anyone to use.

Can Kelvin die in Sons of the Forest?

Can Kelvin die in Sons of the Forest? That's the question you probably ask yourself if you decide to help him and dust the debris from your concussed companion. However, all is not lost as you can get him to follow instructions, so long as you write them on a little piece of paper.

There are advantages to keeping Kelvin alive in the survival game, and morally speaking, it's probably the best decision to do so. If you find yourself struggling to survive, even with our Sons of the Forest tips and tricks, it's important to remember the basics; food and water. Knowing how to find water and a good source of grub is essential to keeping your stamina up, and turtles are just one of the many food sources in the survival horror game - and among the easiest to kill thanks to their inability to run away.      Best curved gaming monitors 2024

What is the best curved monitor for gaming? When you want total immersion in a computer game, it's hard to stress just how much curves matter. We've picked a selection sweeping screens that reside rightfully in the sweet spot for every type of gamer, whether you're after a big-screen experience or a budget panel.

Why buy a curved monitor? Humans see in 3D, taking in length, height, and depth, and even the best gaming monitors (being 2D) don't quite play to the powers of our ocular perception. This leads to a lack of immersion and, sometimes, achy eyestrain that could seriously curtail your punchy fun time with the best PC games.

The best curved gaming monitors use three dimensions to create a viewing experience that's much more comfortable and also generates less distortion by aiming all their light directly at the player and not haphazardly at and past them.

We've listed the concave curvature of each model in this guide, labeled with an 'R' for 'radius', to help you compare them. Generally, the lower the 'R' number, the better. Science tells us that panels with a concave curvature of 1000R are as close to 'eyesight perfect' as they get; but other industry standards that open up further to 1500R, and 1800R are still much more immersive than basic flat monitors.

Where are the Sons of the Forest keycards? The keycards in Sons of the Forest have an important function; each opens a door in the twisting, interlocking cave systems beneath your feet. You might be surprised to discover that the hidden keycard locations are more obvious to you than you'd imagine, but that doesn't mean you aren't going to run up against some mutant-shaped trouble on your way.

While the natural terrain surrounding you in Endnight's horror game might fool you, hidden away in the dark and terrifying caves are various man-made and industrial bunkers, filled with corpses, bones, resources, and all manner of Sons of the Forest mutants. While you can stay alive and have a perfectly nice time just foraging for berries and vibing in the survival game, you need to find other items - including the all-important keycards - to complete your story. Here's where to find, and, more importantly, how to get, all three Sons of the Forest keycards.

I've been looking back over my news pieces about artificial intelligence tools, generative image software and/or large language models and reflecting that what I really distrust about "AI" is the fact that AI is "the future". Saying that X thing is the future is de rigueur for technology marketing. It's something you hear repeatedly from videogames companies in particular, with their sequels and console generations and other chronological fixtures that form an endless staircase towards The New.

Last Epoch is, as has been observed many times, a kind of middle-ground ARPG. You hold down a button to evaporate hordes of enemies from a top down isometric perspective, but, in a step further than Diablo 4, it has more in-depth, any-time crafting for entry level percentage perverts to eke out incremental slivers of health regen vs. damage. At the same time, it's less complex than Path Of Exile, which is where advanced percentage perverts go when they die. Last Epoch has been in early access for a while now, so there's a decent chance that you already know what you think of it now it's in 1.0. If you haven't yet dipped your toe in, then I can tell you it's very decent. It makes building an extremely overpowered mega-wizard very easy, and I liked it better than Diablo IV, I think.

As promised last month, a new thing we're doing for RPS Game Club this year is asking you, our dear readers, what you think of each month's game pick in dedicated posts like this. Not just to foster some good old fashioned discussion among your good selves in the comments, but also as a way for those who aren't able to join us for the end-of-month liveblog session to still take part in what everyone has to say about it. We'll also try and stuff as many of your thoughts and observations into the liveblog discussion proper, too, to try and make it feel as communal as possible (and not just us waffling on about it for a full hour).

Atlus Shares Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance Story Details

Atlus released a special program spotlight for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance sharing details about the new story added to the game. Players will be able to choose between the original route or the new route from the beginning of the game.

The Canon of Creation route follows the same story told in the original SMT V. Meanwhile, the Canon of Vengeance route is the new story being added to Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. Both routes follow roughly the same story up until the middle stages of the plot, at which point Canon of Vengeance will offer significant changes.

Some new additions unique to Canon of Vengeance include 4 new female demons named the Qadištu, the Goddesses of Vengeance. Lilith is the leader of the group, and she seems to have her own agenda set for the Nahobino. Yoko Hiromine is a new character that meets the Nahobino and joins him in his travels while wandering Da'at.

SMT V and SMT V: Vengeance Director Shigeo Komori said that Vengeance was developed as a response to all the ideas the developers couldn't include in the original game. The new storyline of Vengeance will explore the relationship between the Snake God (Qadištu) and the Bull God (Nahobino,) as well as the relationship between those who win and those who are defeated. While SMT V was a story about the Bull God creating a new world, the Canon of Vengeance is structured from the perspective of the Snake God as a tale of revenge by the oppressed.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on June 21, 2024. The original game is immediately available on the Nintendo Switch worldwide.

spirit hunter death mark ii review

Between its haunting and beautiful art, intriguing story, and easy play style, I'm honestly surprised that I didn't know about the Spirit Hunter series until the recent English release of Death Mark II. Though not very long, the tight pacing and collection of scares make for a satisfying experience.

The story of Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II follows protagonist Kazuo Yashiki. He is a specialist when it comes to dealing with hauntings. The headmaster of the esteemed Konoehara Academy hires him to investigate recurring rumors about a ghost called The Departed. The Departed leaves notices around the school, warning students that a spirit will target them. Those notices usually come true, with the warned student disappearing the next day. Yashiki, along with some of the student body and his Mark Bearer friends from the previous games, investigate these spirits. But just as he is pursuing The Departed, so too is The Departed pursuing him.

While this is a direct sequel to the previous games in the series, I never felt lost while playing it. It explains past events and characters in a concise way, giving me enough information without bogging down the pacing. Since most of the game is a visual novel, with side-scrolling adventure elements when exploring, the plot is more important than the actual gameplay. Fortunately, the story is fairly interesting. All of the ghosts that The Departed warns about are based off of famous Japanese folk tales. For example, we've got Hanako-san and Kokkuri-san. I personally really liked that! I enjoyed seeing how the game puts its own spin on these stories and breathes new life into them.

When I say that Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II breathes new life into these classic horror stories, I mean it in multiple ways. For example, the first case focusing on Hanako-san really humanizes her. Who was Hanako, and why did she hate the world enough to linger as a spirit? Hanako-san is so ingrained in Japanese culture that most people likely aren't scared of her. In Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II, though, Hanako-san isn't just a girl in a toilet who'll drag you down to hell, or make a lizard eat you. You find one of her victims in the toilet who died after Hanako made rubber hoses sprout from his eyes, pushing out his eyeballs (which you can still see clinging via the optic nerve).

Now, I've read and written my fair share of horror stories with that level of body horror. It's one thing to read about it and imagine it in your head. It's a whole other thing to see that image rendered with loving care on your Switch. I was really surprised! I had been under the impression that games on Nintendo devices are usually fairly family-friendly. Because of that preconception, you can imagine my surprise when I saw just how disgusting the bodies in this game look.

The art for the game is really something, between the beautiful shading and how visceral it is. The artist went hard on depicting the gruesome deaths, making you feel sorry for the victims even if some of them really deserved it. The balance of gore to body horror is fantastic. There isn't a lot of blood, which could serve to censor the injuries. The art explains this way with items stuck inside the victims to staunch the flow of it. As someone who does enjoy body horror and guro, I found this balance to be artistic and I genuinely enjoyed feeling the initial rush of disgust. If you're not someone who enjoys gore or body horror you can turn off a lot of the gore and jump scares from the settings. I myself turned off the jump scares because I'm not a fan of them.

spirit hunter death mark ii suspensive acts
Screenshot by Siliconera

While Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II was a great experience overall, I have to say that the exploration for the game sometimes was lacking. The environments aren't too interesting to look at, which can make exploration a slog. I do have to say that I appreciate how the game lets you teleport back to the infirmary. That's where you save or switch companions. I highly recommend going back every time you make progress! This is so that you don't have to backtrack too much if you need to switch companions for a Suspensive Act. As well, for all I praised the story, I noticed that it dips in quality later on. The beginning chapters were just too strong. Part of this comes from pacing. It definitely feels like it should be a longer game and that they had to cut some stuff out.

Over the course of seven chapters, Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II spins a terrifying and intriguing yarn that leaves you wanting more. Even if you use its accessibility features to remove the gore or jump scare, it remains a suspenseful read. As a new fan of the series, I'd love to go back and see Yashiki and the other Mark Bearers' previous adventures as I wait for the next installment.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and NIntendo Switch.

Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance Gameplay and QoL Changes Detailed

Atlus detailed some of the new gameplay mechanics present in the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance in a special program spotlight. Atlus confirmed the inclusion of a new Da'at, as well as a new dungeon, new sub-quests, and quality-of-life changes.

One of the new gameplay elements included in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is the addition of unique skills for each demon in the party. They will take a different slot from other skill, and the new skill will emphasize and differentiate the unique characteristics and playstyles of each demon, similar to the Persona Traits added in Persona 5 Royal.

The Nahobiho is a new Frost-type demon based on the appearance of the Nahobino. Nahobiho can use an Ice elemental version of the Wrath Tempest skill, exclusive to the Nahobino in the original SMTV. Nahobiho is one of the 40 new demons that will be added to the game. Players will also be able to interact with demons in their party.

Some of the quality-of-life changes being added to Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance include the following:

  • Under certain circumstances, players can increase the level cap of the Nahobino and demons from 99 to 150.
  • The speed at which players can distribute new demon skill has been changed, and now offers four alternatives: standard, double speed, max speed, or skip.
  • Some Miracles can be toggled ON or OFF from the status screen.
  • A new item will allow players to reset the Nahobino's parameters and relocate his stats.
  • Players can toggle minimap rotation ON or OFF in the settings menu.
  • Saving can now be done anywhere in the map.
  • Growth items such as Gospels (EXP increase) and Incenses (stats increase,) can now be used in a batch.

Additionally, Atlus confirmed that The Return of the True Demon, The Doctor's Last Wish, The Rage of a Queen, and A Goddess in Training DLCs are all included from the beginning as part of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. The Mitama DLC will remain paid content, and two new demons will be added as paid DLC. These are Dagda from SMT IV: Apocalypse, and the brand-new demon Konohana Sakuya.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on June 21, 2024. The original game is immediately available on the Nintendo Switch worldwide.

sakura head silent hill the short message

The Silent Hill Twitter account has revealed that the official name for the monster in Silent Hill: The Short Message is Sakura Head. It decided on the name through popular vote.

The name of Sakura Head comes from the Silent Hill: The Short Message monster's design. Konami held a Twitter poll to let fans decide on the name. Other options included Cherry Blossom Monster and Sakura Body. The reason that Konami held a poll rather than making it open response likely was to prevent users from submitting inappropriate names or jokes.

Masahiro Ito, the monster designer for Silent Hill: The Short Message, had also retweeted the poll in question. He asked what players thought Anita, the protagonist, would name the monster. This follows the naming convention of Pyramid Head, whose official name is actually Red Pyramid Thing because that's what James called it during his first encounter with the creature in Silent Hill 2. So the reason that Sakura Head's name is that is because that's apparently how Anita refers to the thing in her head.

Silent Hill: The Short Message came out for free on the PS5 after the January 2024 State of Play showcase. It follows Anita, who is searching for clues about her missing friend, Maya, in an abandoned apartment complex. While there, she has to face her traumas and past, all while a sakura-headed monster chases her around. You can read our review of it here.

Silent Hill: The Short Message is free-to-play on the PS5.

tales of arise sales

Bandai Namco has announced that sales for Tales of Arise have passed 3 million copies. There is a new visual to commemorate this milestone, with all the party members (including Nazamil) thanking the player.

The art has a light, pastel aesthetic and shows "3M copies sold. Thank you!" at the bottom. It shows all of the main playable characters, including Alphen without his mask. Nazamil is at the back between Dohalim and Rinwell. She is a major character who appeared in the Beyond the Dawn postgame DLC.

Bandai Namco reached this sales milestone for Tales of Arise in the span of about 3 years. The game first came out in early September 2021 and it was a worldwide release. It reached 1.5 million sales in October 2021, about 48 days after its initial September 10, 2021 release. Then, less than a year later in April 2022, Bandai Namco announced that the game sold 2 million copies. We can see that sales significantly slowed down in between 2022 and 2024, even though the DLC for the game came out in November 2023.

Nonetheless, Tales of Arise is still the best-selling Tales game. It beat out Tales of Symphonia, which has 2.4 million sales, and Tales of Vesperia, which has 2.37 million sales. These numbers are from 2021.

Tales of Arise is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree New DLC Map Detailed

In a new IGN interview with Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, he detailed some elements of the new Shadow of the Erdtree DLC map and area that will appear in the game in June 2024. It will be a new space about the same size as Limgrave. [Thanks, IGN!]

Here is the exact statement Miyazaki provided when discussing what The Land of Shadow will involve in Elden Ring:

First of all, the setting of Shadow of the Erdtree is a brand new land. It's a brand new map separate from the Lands Between. It is a land that is overshadowed by the particular Shadow of the Erdtree as opposed to the Erdtree in the Lands Between. And it takes place, again, on an entirely separate, physically separate map. So it will involve a warp of sorts to get there.

In terms of setting and themes, it technically occupies the same space as the Lands Between, the same universe. But due to something story related that we won't reveal today, this has become physically disconnected, and you'll travel to the Shadow of the Erdtree land as a separate place.

IGN

He also noted that Queen Marika and Miquella's visits to the Land of Shadow will also affect and shape players' adventure in the DLC. He noted small, medium, and large "legacy dungeons" will appear on the open world map, much like in the base game.

To help provide some additional context for about how big the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC map may be, I highlighted the Limgrave area of Elden Ring in this screenshot taken from the MapGenie.io interactive map for the game.

Elden Ring is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion will arrive on June 21, 2024

charizard build-a-bear plush

Build-a-Bear has started selling a giant Charizard plush, which will come with its own accessories. There is a limit of five bundles per guest.

There are some restrictions on the jumbo Build-a-Bear Charizard. It will come pre-stuffed and you cannot adjust the stuffing, nor can you place sound or scent inside of the toy. Since you can only purchase the jumbo bundle online, you have to also get the accessories, even if you don't plan on putting them on your Charizard. As well, because of the size of the toy, you will have to pay a surcharge on shipping.

The Charizard bundle costs $115, and it'll come with the Charizard toy, a hat, and a scarf. The hat resembles a trapper hat, and the scarf is a long red one. So if you're worried about your Charizard getting cold, you'll be able to bundle it up. Technically speaking, you can also use other Build-A-Bear accessories to dress up your toy.

Charizard is not the first Pokemon that Build-a-Bear has released as a bundle. The company usually releases Pokemon that are popular or classically cute. Previous Pokemon plushes you could get include ones of Teddiursa, Sylveon, and Sprigatito.

The Charizard bundle from Build-A-Bear is an online exclusive, and you can get it via the company's website.

Game Freak's Pocket Card Jockey Switch : Ride On Races to Switch

As a reminder, while this is a horse racing sim, it doesn't proceed as someone expects. Rather than racing traditionally, people play through hands of Solitaire during a race. How well you do in each hand helps determine the horse's performance. As you continue to do well, you can unlock new races and breed horses.

Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On and its demo are now available on the Nintendo Switch, with the game costing $15 if you decide to go with the full title. The game is also available on Apple iOS devices via Apple Arcade. A subscription for that costs $6.99 per month.

Fantasy Life i Switch Game Delayed Again

During the Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase for February 2024, Level-5 announced that the Switch game Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is delayed again and offered a new release date. This time, it is moving from a Summer 2024 launch window to a launch on October 10, 2024.

The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer. That focused on gameplay. It began by showing the players' arrival on the back of a dragon in a new world. Once there, you get to explore the island. It shows the different lives people can take to perform job tasks, showed the minigames that allow you to craft, and shows what it is like to fight monsters and collect materials. Four-player multiplayer is also highlighted.

You can see the Fantasy Life i new Switch game trailer at the 12:48 mark of the showcase video below:

Back when Level-5 announced this new Fantasy Life game, it suggested it and many other titles would appear in 2023. The delay report first showed up in November 2023. Then at the end of 2023, a Summer 2024 launch window was confirmed. Developer Keiji Inafune even said it would be out then, before this latest reveal.

The new Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time Nintendo Switch release date is October 10, 2024, following it being delayed out of Summer 2024.

Rare NES, SNES, N64 Games Like Battletoads and Killer Instinct Join Nintendo Switch Online

Five Rare NES, SNES, and N64 games will join Nintendo Switch Online for subscribers, with Killer Instinct and Battletoads in Battlemaniacs leading the charge. Four games from the developer are available to everyone with any account, while the N64 game Blast Corps requires the Expansion Pack membership.

Snake Rattle 'n' Roll appeared on the NES in North America and Europe. It is an isometric action game that involves snakes eating circular pellets so they become heavy enough to exit the level, all while dodging hazards and enemies.

Likewise, R.C. Pro-Am was exclusive to North America and Europe originally. It featured an array of tracks and, again, an isometric viewpoint. Players would control R.C. cars and collect upgrades to improve their performance as they'd race.

Killer Instinct is the first entry in the Rare series of fighting games. It features an array of different kinds of fighters, with detailed designs and backgrounds. It was known for its various combos, as well as the ability to perform an Ultra Combo or break out of an opponent's assault with a Combo Breaker.

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is a beat'em up that appeared worldwide. You can only be Pimple or Rash, with Zitz not present. Players go through stages to defeat enemies in the Gamescape to defeat the Dark Queen again.

Finally, Blast Corps is an action game that offers an isometric sort of overhead view. Your goal is to clear the way for a nuclear missile carrier, which means destroying items and solving puzzles as you clear the way.

Here's the full Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase that shows the titles. They appear at the 19:20 mark.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Trailer, Release Date Appears

FromSoftware shared the first trailer for the Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree and revealed its release date. The new DLC expansion will be available on June 21, 2024.

The trailer starts with a cloaked figure arriving at the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum, where Mohg, Lord of Blood keeps a cocoon with the Empyrean Miquella residing in it. As many fans suspected, the DLC seems to heavily focus on Miquella and what happened to the demigod.

The new footage shows not only new areas of the game, but also seems to tease that returning areas might see significant changes due to the events of the DLC. New weapons, Ashes of War, NPC characters, and plenty of other content will be added.

You can check out the trailer for the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion below. The trailer starts at the 28:58 mark.

FromSoftware reported in November 2023 that development of the DLC is progressing adequately. The company also mentioned that the release of the Elden Ring DLC is still some ways off. The company announced that they started development on the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC back in February 2023.

The release date for the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion is June 21, 2024. Elden Ring is immediately available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.
