New Metroidvania Spirit of the Samurai gives you total combo control

One look at new stop-motion Metroidvania The Spirit of the Samurai is more than enough to grab your attention. Blending the side-on 2D action of Hollow Knight or Ori and the Will of the Wisps with a spooky, horror-tinged Japanese setting reminiscent of Nioh, its lovingly handcrafted animations make it one of the most eye-catching games I've seen in a while. Yet after sitting down to take a closer look at Gamescom 2024, the level of control you're given over how you fight is what's really won me over.

Back in June, Edwin covered One Million Checkboxes, a website with one million checkboxes that players could check or uncheck, with any change visible to all other visitors of the site. It became an obsession for some in the two weeks the website was online, as players fought to fill all the boxes, or undo the work of their peers.

The fight was far more complicated than it seemed, as the developer recently explained, with some players finding ways to encode hidden messages in the checkboxes.

Hololive Breaking Dimensions Ceres Fauna

The stable of talent for Hololive English is getting pretty packed, with 4 full generations currently active under the branch. It should be no surprise, then, that they had more than enough skilled singers to hold their own annual concert in a prominent venue. But what was a pleasant surprise was how the Hololive Breaking Dimensions concert didn't just lean on the agency's strongest singers and most popular members like Gawr Gura or guests like Hoshimachi Suisei, but let the less accomplished or newer performers have their own time to shine and show how much they'd improved.

Taking place at New York's Kings Theatre on August 25 and 26, 2024, the Breaking Dimensions concert was the second official Hololive English show after 2023's Connect the World. Performing this time were the entirety of Hololive English's first 3 generations: Myth, Promise (née Council and Project: Hope), and Advent, alongside four guests from the Japanese and Indonesian branches. Together they performed over 30 songs both solo and in groups, broken up by short breaks where some of the girls would lead the crowd in call and response. The concert did not include the more recently debuted group Hololive Justice, but in a nice touch they provided voiceover both before and after each show.

Both days of the Hololive Breaking Dimensions concert started off with some real crowdpleasers: HoloMyth took pride of place with 'ReUnion' followed by IRyS' eurobeat-inspired 'Carbonated Love' on day 1, while day 2 started with Advent singing their original song 'Rebellion' with Hakos Baelz' 'Gekirin' afterwards. I'd seen Bae perform before at DreamHack Melbourne but her skill at dancing still took me by complete surprise, even if I didn't completely vibe with the song itself. Other highlights included noted Hatsune Miku fan Gawr Gura singing 'World is Mine', and Moona Hoshinova being joined by Suisei, IRyS, and Baelz for powerful performance of 'High Tide'.

But beyond those established vocal powerhouses, what really impressed me was how the less musically-focused members had improved, and even stepped up to perform excellent solos. Ninomae Ina'nis, sometimes something of a shrinking violet, stunned when she began belting out the falsetto for 'Synchrogazer'. Meanwhile, Ceres Fauna not only debuted a new song alongside gen-mate Nanashi Mumei, but also took to the stage solo with a rendition of 'Mayonaka no Door (Stay With Me)'. Thats not to say they haven't performed well before, but the confidence they displayed at Breaking Dimensions was on another level and wonderful to see, especially having followed some of them since debut.

Similarly, each member of Hololive Advent got their own solo at Breaking Dimensions, on top of joining various combinations of other members. Rising stars FuwaMoco even got two solos (duos?), proving their performance chops with their original song, 'Born to be a "BAU"DOL!', and a cover of Houshou Marine and Gawr Gura's 'Shinkiro'. Meanwhile, Nerissa Ravencroft struggled not to steal the show in every song she appeared in and Koseki Bijou put on a pretty stellar performance of 'Koi wa Sensou'. It was a very strong showing considering they hadn't even debuted by the time of last year's concert, and I look forward to seeing what newcomers Justice will bring when next year's event rolls around.

If I had to criticise something, it's that the expressions on the models during the MC sections could look a little stiff. They were fine during the performances themselves where they could possibly have been pre-programmed to match the choreography, but during the more freeform sections the tech they used couldn't seem to keep up with their expressions.

But despite that, the Breaking Dimensions showed off a major part of the appeal of Hololive, and Vtubers in general. It's not just the talent and hard work of the performers that is compelling, though it is plenty impressive, but the personal touch gained by watching them adapt and grow. That's what keeps me, at least, coming back to see them and it's why I'll be looking forward to the next EN concert in 2025.

The Hololive English Breaking Dimensions Concert will be available to watch via VOD over on Streaming+ and SPWN until September 25, 2024. Previews of both Day 1 and Day 2 are also available on Youtube.

kyoto animation september 21

Kyoto Animation released a mysterious preview onto its social media accounts, teasing something on September 21, 2024. Information on it will appear at 9:00 PM JST, which would be 5:00 AM PST/8:00 AM EST. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

There's no other information on the post. However, a lot of the replies are guessing that it's probably something related to Haruhi. This is due to the recent release of the Theater of Haruhi Suzumiya light novel, which came out to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the series. Commenters all seem to share this theory, as there aren't any other real guesses as to what Kyoto Animation wants to announce. In any case, we will know on September 21, 2024.

Kyoto Animation was founded in 1985 and has garnered a very positive reputation in the industry and community. Its shows boast high production values and it treats its employees well, such as offering a salary rather than hiring them on as freelancers. Popular or influential titles from Kyoto Animation include Air, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, K-On!, Free!, and Violet Evergarden, and more.

Kyoto Animation will announce something new on September 21, 2024. You can follow its official social media channels to catch the news when it comes out.

The Summer Hikaru Died Manga Volume 4 Unites Characters

A lot of the earlier volumes of The Summer Hikaru Died manga are about developing characters and relationships. The first one sets up the premise and really helps us get to know Yoshiki as he grieves Hikaru and gets to know "Hikaru." The second volume deals with him coming to terms with the situation and accepting what's going on. The third installment started to ramp up the tension and danger. However, what's fantastic about volume 4 of The Summer Hikaru Died is that now that we do know all of these things and are getting familiar, Mokumokuren can finally use the manga to start giving us answers and bring characters together.

Editor's Note: There will be minor spoilers for part of volume 4 of The Summer Hikaru Died manga.

In all of the volumes leading up to volume 4 of The Summer Hikaru Died manga, we've seen characters discuss or hint at the role the Indou family performs in the Kubitachi Mountains. We know the original Hikaru died while doing this task. However, "Hikaru" doesn't know what it is, Kouhei Indou is dead, and Hikaru's grandfather doesn't seem to recall. This installment begins with the two realizing that discovering what that job was and the truth about their hometown could also lead to understanding what "Hikaru" is and helping with the things coming down from the mountain and causing impurities.

Honestly, I loved the fact that now we see Yoshiki and "Hikaru" bonding over a goal. There's a sense of greater acceptance about what "Hikaru" is and what's going on, and a decision to finally stop reacting or trying to ignore things. They're facing it and ready to come to terms with what that knowledge might mean for them. While this doesn't mean immediate answers for them or us, it does offer some fascinating hints. For example, the relation of their town of Kubitachi to a handful of other towns in the area is fascinating and offered a hint about what's going on.

Likewise, this investigation is acting as the impetus for characters to interact in The Summer Hikaru Died. Following the events of volume 3, Asako is being more vocal in her interactions with Yoshiki. We're more aware of what she can do and what happened, especially as another incident happened near the school. We see Tanaka, the investigator summoned to Kubitachi, meet and interact with Yoshiki. The reaction of his "hunting dog" to things going on and people he meets offers more insight into his purpose. I was concerned about what his appearance might mean for Yoshiki and "Hikaru," and now these even more definitive interactions make it better.

But perhaps the best part is seeing the housewife who could tell Yoshiki was dealing with something otherworldly at a glance meet "Hikaru." Because we not only get more insight into him, but learn about her history and how she might get involved in events as they continue. We learn why she's so aware of the impurities and supernatural entities around her. Plus, it's also just fun to see someone who looks so typical and motherly be such a strong and imposing individual.

We don't have all the answers as volume 4 of The Summer Hikaru Died comes to a close, but everything that does come up as we watch Yoshiki and "Hikaru"'s interactions with other characters is incredibly helpful. For the first time since the series started, I felt like I was finally getting answers. By the time I got to the cliffhanger at the end, I felt confident about who Yoshiki could and couldn't trust for the first time. In fact, even though "Hikaru" is still quite a mystery, I also felt like maybe I could believe in that character a bit more too.

Volumes 1-4 of The Summer Hikaru Died are available now via Yen Press, and there's no release date for volume 5 yet.

gudetama cookbook

Sanrio will release a cookbook in which Gudetama will teach you all the different ways to cook eggs. The name of the recipe book is "Gudetama's No Egg No Life: If you have eggs, you can relax."

There are 96 pages in total. In promotional material for the Gudetama cookbook, Sanrio assures readers that the cookbook lacks motivation as well. This isn't just a reference to how Gudetama spends all day lazing around. It's also because this cookbook teaches you easy egg recipes that you can make even if you're exhausted and lazy, or if you're a beginner. The measurements for all of the recipes are for one person (with a larger appetite), so even if you live alone, you don't have to worry about making too much.

Gudetama a lazy and tired egg yolk who's always lying on his egg whites. Sanrio originally marketed Gudetama to kids. However, Sanrio expanded the marketing to include millennials due to teens and adults relating to Gudetama thanks to work or school stress. He has been a popular mascot for Sanrio since then, appearing in shows and in Hello Kitty Island Adventure. In the 2024 popularity poll, he managed to make it to 16th place.

The Gudetama cookbook is available via bookstores (physical and digital) in Japan, as well as on websites like Amazon.

mcdonald's usada pekora

In the early hours of September 13, 2024, the Japanese McDonald's X (formerly known as Twitter) account posted an ominous picture that seems to be teasing an upcoming collaboration with Usada Pekora of hololive. It shows her silhouette in front of the full moon and the caption reads, "I want to eat tsukimi burgers peko." [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Tsukimi, or moon-viewing, is a custom that the Japanese and other Asian cultures indulge in during the autumn season. Traditionally, you would eat snacks like dango or drink sake. However, restaurants will also release a limited time tsukimi menu, which usually includes an egg in the dish. The egg would represent the moon.

McDonald's also started selling its own tsukimi menu from September 4, 2024. Some new items this year include chicken nuggets with a yuzu shichimi tartar sauce, a tsukimi pie (filled with kinako mochi and red bean paste), and a custard pudding-flavored shake. The cup the shake comes in depicts two rabbits looking up at the full moon, which is a reference to the story of the Moon rabbit. Pekora being a rabbit is likely the reason why she's the hololive VTuber who'll be part of this upcoming collaboration.

More information on the McDonald's and Usada Pekora collaboration will appear in the future.

Greedfall 2 is a beautiful fantasy RPG reminiscent of BioWare's heyday

Playing Baldur's Gate 3 was a nice reminder of how much I enjoy tactical RPGs. While the turn-based format is always welcome, however, I still have a craving for that particular brand of real-time action where you can pause at any time to direct each member of your party. So with the Greedfall 2 launch imminent, I sat down at Gamescom 2024 to try out a section of the early game, and it instantly took me back 15 years to Dragon Age: Origins, where BioWare emphatically reminded us just how fun that classic style of CRPG can be.

Good Saturday, friends! It's finally hitting Autumn, isn't that lovely? The leaves are doing that cool visual glitch where they look nice for once. All pretty and crunchy and satisfying. It's just a shame it only lasts a week or two before turning into mulch on the pavement. Reminds me of a Regina Spektor lyric: "Leaves become most beautiful when they're about to die". And now, inevitably whatever I write below this will be a lie, because I'll actually spend my weekend listening to old Regina Spektor songs, because she's just the best.

oberon vortigern nendoroid

Good Smile Company has opened up pre-orders for a Nendoroid of Oberon Vortigern/Pretender from Fate/Grand Order. Pre-orders will close on October 23, 2024.

The Oberon Vortigern/Pretender Nendoroid from Fate/Grand Order will come out in March 2025 for those in Japan and it costs 6900 JPY. Meanwhile, those in North America can expect to see him some time in Q3 2025. The Nendoroid costs $44.99 if you purchase it from there. As a reminder, Good Smile Company can only send this to Canada or the United States due to geographical licensing restrictions.

Like all other Nendoroids, Oberon will come with three face plates. There's a blank expression, a scheming one, and a dumbfounded one. You can also pose him with a pill bug optional part, and there are various hand parts as well. As this Oberon Nendoroid depicts him in his third ascension, it is a spoiler for those who have not yet finished Avalon le Fae. Granted, Lasengle was pretty open with his swimsuit design as well, so most people have seen him in his third ascension.

Oberon is a major character in the Avalon le Fae chapter in Fate/Grand Order. He was also the first playable Pretender when he debuted as a Servant back in 2021. In terms of his capabilities in battle, Oberon is one of the best Servants to pull for due to his powerful skills.

Fate/Grand Order is readily available on mobile devices and the Oberon Nendoroid is open for pre-order until October 23, 2024.

yu yu hakusho art

The official account for the Yu Yu Hakusho anime has posted some new art to commemorate autumn. It depicts the main characters walking through a park.

Yusuke and Keiko are walking at the front of the group, with Keiko talking to Yusuke about something and Yusuke not even looking over at her. A little behind them are Yukina and Hiei. In a rather rare occasion, Hiei is wearing clothes that resemble what a normal human would wear. Kuwabara is making heart eyes at Yukina behind those two while Kurama is to the side on his own. Since it's still early autumn, they're not that bundled up and the girls are wearing dresses and long skirts that look like they're for spring.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a Japanese anime and manga series by Yoshihiro Togashi, and the original series ran from 1990 to 1994. There was also an anime adaptation for it (including an OVA in 2018) and a live-action adaptation on Netflix. The series is very popular and is one of the best-selling manga series of all time.

It follows Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who dies after saving a kid from a truck. Since the Underworld didn't expect Yusuke to do such a heroic act, they weren't prepared for him and so revive him under the caveat that he work for the Spirit World as a detective. The series starts out quite episodic, as it follows Yusuke through his various cases, before becoming more combat-focused with the Dark Tournament Arc and Chapter Black Arc.

Yu Yu Hakusho is readily available on Crunchyroll. As for the manga, Viz licensed it for English release.

fist of the north star anime

Warner Bros Japan has revealed a key visual for the new Fist of the North Star anime in production. News of the project first appeared in 2023. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The key visual shows protagonist Kenshiro. However, you can only see him from behind, as he's facing down a horde of enemies. This is a commemorative project to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Fist of the North Star. Warner Bros Japan plans on using the latest animation technology and make a faithful animated adaptation that'll convey the charm and awesomeness of the original story. There will be a whole new staff and cast. More information on that, as well as the streaming platforms and release dates, will appear later.

Fist of the North Star is a highly influential and popular anime and manga series. It ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1983 to 1988, and has been collected into a total of 27 tankobon volumes. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic Earth and follows Kenshiro, a warrior who can use the Hokuto Shinken martial art style. "Omae wa mou shindeiru" or "You're already dead" is a memetic scene that most people have likely seen online, even if they don't watch or read the series.

Fist of the North Star is in production and more information on it will appear in the future.
