Medieval fantasy RPG Wartales makes enemies smarter and adds new maps

It's not been long since Shiro Games launched its most recent DLC for medieval fantasy RPG Wartales, but the indie studio has been hard at work since then on a wealth of additional improvements for the strategic mercenary sim based on community feedback. With more than a million sales of the base game and a Steam user score sitting at 90% positive, Shiro says it has "been extremely happy to read what you had to say about our latest DLC, The Skelmar Invasion, and Wartales in general." Its latest update steps the core experience yet again, and a Steam sale means you can grab it cheap if you're quick.

My latest Baldur's Gate 3 playthrough was more unsettling than any horror game

I'm faced with a dilemma. Arabella, a little Tiefling child, has stolen a precious idol from the local druids at The Grove. She's now facing death at the fangs of acting First Druid Kahga's serpent, Teela. You have several options, some meaning Arabella will live, others meaning Arabella will die. On every other playthrough, I've talked Kagha off the ledge, but there's a fresh Dark Urge option here: flick your eyes toward the cave entrance, and urge the girl to run. It's over in a flash. Fangs pierce flesh. A life snuffed out. It's my first real evil act as Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3, and I can already feel a heaviness in my stomach.

Legendary 90s JRPGs Suikoden 1 and 2 are finally on PC with full HD remasters

The mid-90s were an incredible period for the best JRPGs. Final Fantasy was on an incredible streak with FF6, FF7, and FF8, and the likes of Chrono Trigger and EarthBound remain all-time classics to this day. Alongside them, if you were really in the know, and could manage to pronounce it, were Suikoden 1 and 2. While they didn't catch on quite as hard as some of their peers at the time, the pair gradually grew an audience, earning a well-deserved reputation as beloved cult classics that remain genre icons to this day.      Vicious and smart, one of PC's best hidden-gem FPS games is cheaper than ever

In Doom Eternal, you have to sprint, leap, and pirouette to stay alive and get the drop on the hellspawn. In Half-Life and Half-Life 2, it's all about keeping your HEV suit charged and, especially during the many platforming and physics-based puzzle sections, watching your step and proceeding with extreme caution. In most FPS games, you have to be either precise and skillful or slow and careful. Robocop Rogue City is the total opposite. You're a machine. You're a tank. Grab a 12 gauge, march right in there, and blast bad guys at your robotic leisure. With a new DLC just announced, one of the best hidden-gem shooters on Steam is now the cheapest it's ever been.

Roguelike ARPG Ravenswatch proved one of my favorite surprises of 2024. Of all the new survival games that arrived in 2024, grimdark looter shooter The Forever Winter has a particularly captivating premise. In its wasteland ruled by the hulking mechs of warring megacorporations, you're but a tiny figure scrabbling through the dust. Every inch of space or ounce of water you can scrounge might prove the difference between life and death. Review_ Dawnfolk Is a Game That Really Prioritizes Resources

Many city management games come down to collecting and properly using resources, with other elements and systems just overcomplicating things. Which means all you really need for these types of titles to get  you is for that core acquisition and implementation mechanic to feel really satisfying and sound. Darenn Keller's Dawnfolk knows the exact buttons to press to reward you for every little action and encourage you to keep building and experimenting with your cities.

Your whole kingdom fell. Darkness and the dangers lurking within it completely enveloped the land. Every settlement is deserted, destroyed, rolled back and captured. However, there is hope. After encountering a being known as Lueur, you're able to gather light to illuminate those stolen spaces and face back against the threatening storms, allowing you to rebuild and gather the resources to once again allow people to live happy and productive lives. This happens one tile at a time, in the most captivating and low-res sort of way.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79z_w1-XbpM&ab_channel=Darenn

In Dawnfolk you're taking back territory against the dark. You set up around your home tile. Depending on the type of land or items in a space, you can establish presences that net you people, earn you materials, collect food, or gather light. This allows you to build new locations with the assets, purify spaces to expand or fight hazardous storms, or forge connections. Keep doing well and you can expand your home to use the power of science to further advance your buildings. You're constantly developing your cities and reclaiming areas that fell to danger, one tile at a time. It's all very thoughtful and, unless you're going through a brief minigame to collect certain items, the game lets you take your time. Though said minigames can be automated if you build a certain building, even eliminating that pressure.

While Dawnfolk is a very straightforward city simulation and resource management game, I also appreciated the times when it would tap into other genres. For example, opportunities will come up when you can make choices about the people who reside in your empire. In one case, I was told that some fishermen went missing. I could expend resources to search for them or save up. I took the risk, and one was found. However, that led to another choice involving a deserted island, which lent itself to more consequences based on my actions.

The range of modes also help with that exploration of opportunities, particularly the Puzzle one. In addition to the Story maps, which you need to play to earn the currency to unlock the additional modes and more campaign segments, there are Puzzle, Curious Expedition, Sandbox, and Endless options. Sandbox and Endless both offer a very freeform approach of the traditional experience, allowing you to keep going just as you would in a finished Story map. Curious Expedition feel a bit like Story sessions, only with sillier requirements for success. Puzzle mode is fantastic in that there are specific scenarios and a daily puzzle. You'll have a goal to reach and start out with a set number of resources. You'll need to arrange things in such a way that you meet certain milestones on a daily basis to win, and it really forces you to think about how to best use the plots and potential assets.

And the thing is, no matter which way you play, the foundations and systems in Dawnfolk are so strong that it works. It carries over beautifully. It's a joy to gradually build up, expand out, rearrange as you decide to make different choices, and see what you can do with the territories and assets available to you. If you are in the campaign, it's about decisions that let you weather storms. If it's a puzzle, it's playing around with the "pieces" of land to meet criteria. With Curious Expeditions, it's about understanding the twist. In Sandbox or Endless, it's taking time to enjoy what the game has to offer with few restrictions.

There's also that fantastic aesthetic. Dawnfolk is a minimalistic game with lots of sprites that are incredibly effective at conveying information. You always know exactly what you're looking at. However, there's also this fantastic element of darkness woven into everything. So it isn't just a general ambiance, it's a part of the story and a gameplay mechanic. It all works into everything seamlessly, resulting in a game that feels so cohesive and dedicated to the point of lighting the way through dismal times.

I adore Dawnfolk, and I relish every opportunity I get to go through the game's modes and build up a new homeland. It's one of those city building and management sims that offers a sufficient challenge, but also doesn't penalize you for decisions you make as you find your way through situations. Given the array of options also offered beyond a traditional campaign, it also felt like Darenn Keller somehow considered any possible situation I might be in when I head into a session, resulting in it feeling like I always have a moment for it.

Dawnfolk is available for PCs.

Offset Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds

Monster Hunter Wilds introduces a new combat mechanic called Offset that rewards precise timing and aggression. This technique lets hunters uniquely counter enemy attacks, and if you want to make use of it, here's everything you need to know about them.

What are Offset Attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds

Mastering Offset Attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds can significantly enhance your combat prowess by allowing you to counter monster attacks and momentarily throw them off balance. Unlike defensive maneuvers such as Perfect Guards or Power Clashes, Offset Attacks require hunters to actively strike their target, functioning more like a 'parry' than a traditional guard.

When timed correctly, intercept and counter a monster's attack using an Offset attack, causing the creature to stagger and become vulnerable for a few seconds. This is incredibly powerful, as this mechanic rewards precise timing and an aggressive playstyle, allowing you to continuously attack a monster rather than going on the defensive during an encounter.

Offset Clash in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

Successfully executing an Offset Attack not only prevents incoming damage but also creates an opportunity to unleash further attacks while the monster is off-balance. You'll know when you've performed an Offset attack when you glow white during an attack or a monster is thrown off-balance by your attack.

Weapons that can perform Offset Attacks

Not all weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds can perform Offset Attacks, as many do not need them. Offset attacks tend to only be available for slower weapons, but this is not always the case. Here's a list of weapons that use this unique technique and that move in their kits to enable it:

  • Greatsword - Charged Rising Slash
  • Hammer - Upswing, after the third swing only
  • Switch Axe - Offset Rising Slash, Axe morph only
  • Hunting Horn - Offset Melody
  • Heavy Bowgun - Ignition
  • Insect Glaive - Strong Descending Slash, first swing only

Offset Attacks Tips and Tricks

If you've ever intentionally attempted an Offset attack, then you know it's a lot easier said than done. This is because the timing for Offsets is different for each weapon and each monster, meaning there's a ton to practice if you're looking to make use of this mechanic. Here are a few tips to get your mind in the right place.

Training Room in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

  • Practice Timing: Regular practice in timing your attacks to coincide with the monster's offensive moves will improve your success rate with Offset Attacks. The training room has a 'monster' that you can use to practice landing Offset Attacks in general. This can help you learn the timing of using your Offset attack, but you'll still need to practice against different monsters.
  • Learn Monster Attack Patterns: Understanding the timing and cues of a monster's attacks is crucial for anticipating when to execute an Offset Attack.

Offset Stance in Monster Hunter Wilds
Screenshot by Destructoid

  • Maintain Weapon Readiness: Ensure your weapon is always prepared for a quick counter, as hesitation can lead to missed opportunities.
  • Stay Aggressive: Adopting an offensive mindset keeps you poised to capitalize on Offset Attack opportunities, maintaining pressure on the monster. Don't stand around waiting for an opportunity, and you'll miss out on damage potential if all you're trying to do is land an Offset. The timing will arrive through aggressive gameplay.

By building the muscle memory needed for Offset Attacks and integrating them into your hunting strategy, you can turn the tide of battle for your squad, transforming enemy aggression into openings for critical strikes. While not required to reach the status quo, embracing this mechanic will turn you into a more deadly hunter in Monster Hunter Wilds.

The Hunter faces a group of Yian Kut-Ku in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Whether you are looking to complete your Esperanza weapon collection or simply get your hands on a game-changing armor set as soon as possible in Monster Hunter Wilds, knowing how to farm both Wyvern and Bird Wyvern Gems will be a must.

But unfortunately for all hoping to rely solely on their skills, getting even a single copy of the items will also demand an immense amount of luck. Here are all the ways to get Wyvern and Bird Wyvern Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds.

How to get Wyvern Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds

You can get Wyvern Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds as a target and bonus rewards by hunting High Rank Balaharas, Quematrices, Rompopolos, Hirabamis, and Gravios. The item will have a 3% drop rate. Players will also have a 5% chance of getting the material while carving the main body of any of the above monsters. Carving the tails of both Balaharas or Quematrices will also have a 7% chance of netting you the item.

When searching for the Wyvern Gem, don't forget that you can see if the item will be among a hunt's bonus rewards selection while in the Create a Quest screen. Doing this can help you pinpoint which quests to take on, as you are guaranteed to get at least one copy of each listed reward upon completion.

  • A Wyvern Gem, as seen among the rewards for the Quematrice hunt.
  • A Wyvern Gem, as shown in MW Wilds.

For those looking to farm the material while advancing in the game's storyline, you can also get it as a chance reward by completing many post-game/event quests, such as the following:

  • A Leviathan's Temper
  • Armor Like a Mountain
  • Continuing Conflict
  • Echoing from the Cliffs
  • Fleeting Victory
  • Rath-from-Above, Go!
  • Secure Wounded Hollow
  • Succulent Scraps
  • Profusion of Poison
  • Troublemakers
  • The Desert Knows Not the Sea
  • The Pursued and the Pursuer

How to get Bird Wyvern Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds

Although just as rare as its regular variant, getting Bird Wyvern Gems in Monster Hunter Wilds will not involve tackling any big or pseudo-apex threats. Instead, you will be able to get it by hunting the following monsters.

  • Gypceros: 3% as a Target Reward and 5% via carving. Also has a 3% chance of being featured among the hunt's set of bonus rewards.
  • Yian Kut-Ku: 3% as a Target Reward and 5% via carving. Also has a 3% chance of being featured among the hunt's set of bonus rewards.

You will also be able to get the material as a chance reward by completing quests —in this case, the Aberrant Atrocity and Mysterious Poison optional ones, the Lured by Abundance assignment, and the event-exclusive Kut-Ku Gone Cuckoo. The event quest will only be available until March 18, 2025. Compelling it will also reward you with the ability to craft the exclusive and meme-worthy Mimiphyta Alpha head armor/helmet.

FragPunk characters in battle

FragPunk is another hero shooter where every character (or Lancer in this game) has different quips and abilities. If you're looking to find a Lancer that is right for you, here is which one you should buy first once you're able to in FragPunk.

Which Lancer should you buy first in FragPunk?

Since there are a variety of modes with their own sets of tier lists in FragPunk, it's hard to recommend just one Lancer to buy first. Instead, we'll give you two recommendations and explain why each one has some good versatility options.

FragPunk Zephyr
Image via Bad Guitar Studio

Zephyr

Characters with cloaking or invisibility moves are typically some of the best ones for objective-based game modes. Aside from Deathmatch, where she may falter a bit, Zephyr can turn the tide as a defender or attacker.

Also, that Get Back ability is very invaluable in creating a diversion while attacking and defending. Bait someone just to get them at an angle that they have not seen you spawn back to.

Yes, she can be hard-countered by people with sonar abilities that can give her position away. However, a half-decent Zephyr can make use of ability radiuses, be patient, and hit a flank to get at least a good kill.

Pathojen character select FragPunk
Image via Bad Guitar Studio

Pathojen

Pathojen is the only character who can heal her teammates, and this is never a bad thing. Pair that with the fact that she can lock down areas with her Shroom Wall and deal great DoT (Damage over Time) with her Killer Queen ability, and she's a force to be reckoned with.

Even though she's more of a defensive character than offensive, properly placed abilities can force people playing defense to move from their positions. The healing can also be used as a means to push an objective.

Making people play around your gadgets gives you the upper hand as a support trapper.

Daredevil standing in a sewer in Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil: Born Again reintroduces Marvel Cinematic Universe fans to Matt Murdock and his refreshingly grounded approach to justice. With all the multiversal madness the MCU's been peddling the last few years, it's easy to forget that Matt once led a superhero team dedicated to keeping New York's streets safe.

Born Again brings a facet of the MCU that was hung out to dry over half a decade ago back into the fold. As a result, storylines and characters that went into stasis with it might also step out of the shadows and become relevant again. As exciting as that decision is, it's also a turn that's bound to confuse the hell out of some MCU fans.

Whether you're an MCU veteran looking for a refresher or a complete newcomer wondering what was happening in the first two episodes of Born Again, here's the ultimate watch order for MCU series and movies that follow Daredevil and his crew of friends, foes, and fellow vigilantes.

What is the "Netflix era" of the MCU?

Image via Netflix

Unlike Iron Man or Captain America, Daredevil's MCU debate wasn't a big-screen affair. In the early 2010s, Marvel Studios struck a deal with Netflix to produce shows based on Marvel's "street-level" characters like Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones. These guys don't fend off alien conquerors or travel through time; they stop people on the street from being mugged and bust up crime syndicates goon by broken goon.

Like their cinematic big siblings, these shows have stand-alone stores that gradually come together to weave a big inter-series plot paid off by a massive crossover event. That crossover event was The Defenders, which brought the titular team together to defend New York.

Here are all the MCU shows that feature Daredevil and the other members of the Defenders. Conveniently, they're all available on Disney+, neatly collected as "The Defenders Saga." When

How to watch the Defenders Saga in release order

Image via Netflix

If you want to experience the overarching story of The Defenders Saga in chronological order, you'll have to be ready to jump between the series a bit. These shows prioritize progressing existing stories and developing established characters over teasing future ones (something modern MCU films and shows might want to take notes on), so it can be hard to tell which order to watch each in.

Luckily, the order in which the shows were released reflects the order they fall in on the MCU's timeline. Here's how to watch the Defenders Saga in chronological order.

  • Daredevil Season 1
  • Jessica Jones Season 1
  • Daredevil Season 2
  • Luke Cage Season 1
  • Iron Fist Season 1
  • The Defenders Season 1
  • The Punisher Season 1
  • Jessica Jones Season 2
  • Luke Cage Season 2
  • Iron Fist Season 2
  • Daredevil Season 3
  • The Punisher Season 2
  • Jessica Jones Season 3

If you ask me, this is the best way to watch the Defenders Saga. Unlike the Avengers, you get to spend an entire season with each member of the Defenders, wallowing in their suffering and riding the highs of their triumphs. So when the overarching plot puts them on a collision course, the hype is in the upper atmosphere.

Now that Born Again has reintroduced Daredevil, the door's open for the rest of the Defenders to make their return. With the Avengers busy saving the multiverse, someone needs to make sure they have a city to come back to.

A hero crushes a card in FragPunk in first person.

With tens of thousands of players logging in every day on Steam alone, it's hard to argue against FragPunk's immediate success. If the game manages to extend this popularity in the future and whether it will become a positive investment for developer Bad Guitar Studio, owned by the same NetEase behind Marvel Rival, only time will tell.

For now, we know that FragPunk is doing fine. However, if you had made the questionable decision to get your game news from Steam's store page, you'd have seen something different. For about a day following its release on Steam on March 7, FragPunk was sitting on a Mixed rating after just 6000 reviews. Even now, it's at the slightly better "Mostly Positive." That's not too bad, but it's miles behind the (also mixed) 82.000 reviews of last week's Monster Hunter Wilds and was even beaten by last month's surprise indie hit REPO.

Why is FragPunk receiving so many bad reviews on Steam?

The card stash screen in FragPunk showing many different in-game values in the top right corner.

FragPunk is off to a rocky start, but it sure isn't dead on arrival, as some Steam reviews will have you believe. However, beyond those who mockingly compare it to a mobile game and mourn their beloved beta, there are some fair criticisms of FragPunk found in those comments.

The most common complaint is that unlocking anything in FragPunk takes too long, and it's too expensive. Similarly, a lot of players are less than thrilled about the nine distinct in-game currencies, which they identify as a transparent attempt at obfuscating the items' real cost. Many others dislike the slow movement speed and fast time to kill. Some believe FragPunk dilutes the CounterStrike formula too much, while others argue that the addition of character powers and cards isn't enough to distinguish the game from the competition.

Even though the loudest voices are those critical of the game, we shouldn't forget that FragPunk is a success. It has a healthy player base right off the bat, most of which seem to like it just fine. It's a creative mix of hero shooters and slow, tactical combat, introducing divisive but bold innovations like the Shard Cards and lots of weird new game modes.

In a world of self-serious shooters, FragPunk stands out because it isn't afraid of being a little silly. This one is worth keeping an eye on.

zzz 1.7 characters

Zenless Zone Zero has revealed two new characters, Vivian and Hugo, will be released in the upcoming version 1.7 update, which is expected to go live on April 23, 2025.

Both of them are from Mockingbird and are also the only two Agents from this faction who are confirmed to become playable as of this writing.

ZZZ 1.7 characters

Vivian

Vivian is the first character to be revealed for the Zenless Zone Zero 1.7 update. According to her official drip marketing post, her fighting Specialty and Attribute are:

  • Specialty - Anomaly
  • Attribute - Ether

Her Rank and Type are currently unknown, but you can look forward to more details in the version 1.7 livestream. She made her first and brief appearance as an NPC during the The Day of Brilliant Wishes event in version 1.5, so there's very little info on her.

https://twitter.com/ZZZ_JP/status/1897498659077386417

HoYoverse has also revealed Vivian's voice actors in the following languages:

  • Chinese: Chen Yang
  • Japanese: Mizuno Saku
  • Korean: Jang Mi

Hugo

Hugo is the second character who will debut in Zenless Zone Zero 1.7. As mentioned, he is also a member of the Mockingbird faction. Based on his official profile reveal, Hugo's Specialty and Attribute are:

  • Specialty - Attack
  • Attribute - Ice

Hugo's Rank and Type will be revealed later.

He was introduced in Lycaon's Agent Story on the game's release, and both seem to have a history as the former Mockingbird member disagrees with Hugo's way of approaching things. Similar to Vivian, Hugo also made an appearance as an NPC in The Day of Brilliant Wishes event.

https://twitter.com/ZZZ_JP/status/1898223434875707616

Hugo's voice actors in ZZZ are:

  • Chinese: Liang Dawei
  • Japanese: Fukuyama Jun
  • Korean: Kim Hye-sung

Expected release date

HoYoverse is yet to reveal the banner order for version 1.7, but Vivian and Hugo's expected release date is still easy to guess based on the previous banner schedule:

  • Phase 1: April 23, 2025
  • Phase 2: May 14, 2025

Both halves will likely run for three weeks, giving Proxies enough time to pull for them.
