Perhaps it was an understatement when we said Cyberpunk was having its first "good day" when it creeped its way to the top of the Steam charts earlier this year. As it turns out, the beleaguered role-playing game, which has received a number of updates since its dumpster fire of a release, was quietly trucking along…

GOG's next free game is from the makers of this year's indie game darling, The Riftbreaker

Even if the big gift-giving holiday is over, you're still in line for a whole bunch of free PC games. Epic's daily giveaways are still ongoing, and GOG is continuing to provide its regular freebies, too. The latest giveaway is X-Morph: Defense, a combination of tower defence and top-down shooter that puts you in the role of an alien invader.

X-Morph: Defense is currently available for free on GOG – well, free in exchange for signing up for the site's email list. You can claim it from the store's front page until December 29, and it'll remain in your library forever once you do. This is the complete edition of the game, which includes three DLC packs and the soundtrack.

The devs describe X-Morph as a "unique fusion of a top down shooter and tower defense strategy. You are the X-Morph - an alien species that invades Earth to harvest its resources and terraform the surface. Strategize in the build mode by carefully selecting various types of alien towers or throw yourself right into the heat of the battle."

The best-selling game of the Steam Winter Sale isn't on sale

The Steam Winter Sale is (still) upon us, promising (or threatening) our wallets with a smorgasbord of PC gaming deals. Yet it seems the promise of cheap, slightly older games can't match the excitement around new stuff, as it's a brand-new game that's topped the sales charts for the week - albeit one that's benefitted from the accidental marketing of controversy.

Every week, third-party site SteamDB publishes a list of the best-selling games on Steam, judged by revenue generated. This week's list covers December 20 through 26, which includes the two days before the sale, and the five days after it began. Even with competition from discounted games, the number-one seller for the week is Ready or Not.

Ready or Not is a modern successor to games like SWAT 4, putting players in the boots of militarised police officers responding to violent situations. It hit Early Access on December 17, and Steam user reviews put it at an 'overwhelmingly positive' rating. The devs at VOID Interactive announced a split with publisher Team17 shortly after one developer said that "you better believe" the game would feature a school shooting level, though the devs deny any connection between the comment and the split.

Halo Infinite hidden game modesIt's been a long wait, but a new Halo game is finally out and our minds are made up. Halo Infinite is a fresh take on 343's trilogy and a decent shooter within certain contexts, but this review will show that the multiplayer is far from what we expected to get after six years of development time and frankly a lot of upselling. Before we get into the Moa meat of the review, I feel it's important to establish my past experiences with the Halo franchise. I've been playing Halo and have been a large fan since Combat Evolved. I played extensively through the highs of Halo 2 and Halo 3, have been involved in various Halo communities, and watched the franchise evolve and slowly fall off in popularity over the years under 343 Industries' management.   Infinite was supposed to be 343's return to form after the lukewarm reception to Halo 4, the disastrous launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and the mixed response to Halo 5: Guardians multiplay...

Today's free game from Epic is a little Zelda, a little Diablo, and has D&D roots

It's another day in the two weeks leading up to the new year, and you know that means - yet another entry in Epic's fortnight (ha) of daily free PC games. Today's giveaway is a gorgeous little indie that takes Zelda-style adventuring and puzzle-solving, gives it some Diablo-like combat, and lets you craft your own spells to give the action a personal touch.

You can grab Mages of Mystralia for free on the usual Epic Games Store promotion page from now until December 28 at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for.

As the devs explain: "In Mages of Mystralia, you play as Zia, a young girl who discovers that she has been born with an innate sense of magic. Unfortunately, magic has been banned, so she strikes off to train on her own to gain some control over her powers. On her journey, she meets other exiled mages and, discovers runes with magical properties and realizes that she can combine these runes in millions of different ways to come up with completely new spells."

Dark Souls diary: help wanted in The Depths

With the first leg of my playthrough of legendary RPG Dark Souls under my belt, I'm about to get my first real taste of its infamous difficulty curve. It's a good opportunity to ponder Dark Souls' approach to challenge and the non-traditional ways in which it lets players circumvent that difficulty. As things get spookier in The Depths, it's time to start thinking outside the box.

After defeating the gargoyles and ringing the first Bell of Awakening, I take a cue from my new friend Solaire and bask for a moment in the crepuscular sunlight that pokes through the cloud cover. It's the last I'll see for a while: the next leg of my journey will be increasingly dark and dank. The sun of which Solaire speaks so warmly fades as I descend into Lower Undead Burg, only to be obscured completely when I unlock the door that leads into the Depths.

Alongside the suffocating darkness, there's a sharp uptick in difficulty. With the notable exceptions of the balder knights patrolling the Parish, most of my enemies so far have been listless hollows who shamble toward me half-heartedly before finally committing to a fight. Things are different in the grubby alleyways below: immediately upon arriving in Lower Undead Burg, I'm attacked by three vicious dogs, then set upon by a gang of hooded rogues armed with poison blades.

Genshin Impact 2.4 drops next week, with new

The holiday season might be in full swing, but Genshin Impact developer Mihoyo has been busy unveiling all that's to come to the action-RPG with its next big update. The Genshin Impact 2.4 release date has been confirmed as January 5, and we now know a new area called Enkanomiya, new characters Shenhe and Yun Jin, and the Lantern Rite festival are on the way.

Enkanomiya sounds like a pretty spooky new area to explore, being the remains of an ancient underwater nation buried underwater and sealed away under Inazuma for thousands of years. It's a huge floating island found under the ocean which is constantly being eroded by the Abyss and now lies in ruins, once home to the ancestors of the Watatsumi Island's people.

You'll find that there's no day or night down in Enkanomiya - instead, you'll have to find a way to an ancient 'sun' created by the people who once lived there called the Dainichi Mikoshi, while diving into puzzles and the new area's secrets. There are also tricky new enemies in Bathysmal Vishaps - cunning foes that can team up and "take advantage of their surroundings", as Mihoyo explains in a press release - and The Abyss Lector: Fathomless Flames. This enemy can dish out pyro attacks with delayed bursts of damage that can ignore characters' shields.

As a child struggling to sleep at night I'd dream of three worlds. First and least of these was Desert World, a blithe eternity of golden sand always viewed from kilometres up, where fizzing white rings rose toward me like expanding surf. I'd try to find my way down to the surface, but always at the risk of glitching straight through and ending up in Snake World, where monstrous serpents emerged from darkened kitchens.

Somewhere between these two poles lay the realm of the Animals, not that they were really animals, but clouds of eyelash-thin mandible, grot and sparkle, like rotten food on the point of becoming a school of tropical fish. I loved Animal World. I used to spend hours trying to mind-hack my way into it. I was pretty shocked to find its likeness in Sluggish Morss: Pattern Circus - an irresistibly strange, gristly, sorrowful, comical and inventive album of creatures, songs, places and phrases from Jack King-Spooner and composer Helena Celle.

The original plan was for Square Enix to make a big year-end announcement regarding Final Fantasy XVI. That's not going to happen, and the game has been delayed by at least half a year.

A bunch of Paradox strategy games are going cheap on Steam right now

The 2021 Steam winter sale is in full swing, and that means a ton of the biggest and best PC games going for cheap right now. While there's obviously a whole lot of discounted stuff to check out across a bunch of different genres, one slice of the sale is offering some decent deals on various Paradox strategy games, including bundles aimed at helping bring new players aboard.

The Paradox winter sale has up to 75% off some of the studio's various games, with that full three-quarters discount currently available on city-building simulation game Cities: Skylines, military strategy game Hearts of Iron IV, sci-fi adventure Stellaris, and historical grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV. Crusader Kings III discounted by less, but still 20% off, bringing it down to £33.59 / $39.99, in case you've got that on your wishlist.

Elsewhere there are several starter packs going for cheap, which should prove handy if you've got your eye on any of these but are yet to dive in. The Cities: Skylines new player bundle has the base game plus three key DLC packs - Mass Transit, Industries, and Sunset Harbor - for 64% off.

Final Fantasy 16's development has been delayed

It looks like we're going to have wait a while longer for our next good look at Final Fantasy XVI. Producer Naoki Yoshida has confirmed that, due to the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the game's development has been delayed "by almost half a year", and that its "next big reveal" will come in spring 2022.

"When we last spoke, I promised I would have more information on Final Fantasy XVI sometime later in 2021," Yoshida explains in a statement shared on the game's Twitter channel (below). "However, I regret to inform you that I will be unable to keep that promise as complications stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have delayed the game's development by almost half a year."

The producer explains that the studio has needed to "decentralise" the large team of creators working on the game and let them work from home due to the ongoing pandemic. This has unfortunately meant, though, that communications from the head office in Tokyo have been "hampered", which has had a knock-on effect on the delivery of assets.
