I always love stumbling across something unexpected that catches my attention, and free Steam game Die in the Dungeon Origins is one of my favorite such games in 2023. Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising Review

I delved a bit into the original Granblue Fantasy mobile game and even its later anime adaptation, but neither of them ever truly stuck with me despite the intriguing characters and premise. I honestly feel the same after playing Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising, but it at least offers some gorgeous 2D fighting worth checking out for certain players.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising bills itself as a sequel to the 2020 hit fighting game, and some of the data from that game carries over for existing fans. It also contains almost all of the content from the original, plus some new characters and modes on top of that. Suffice to say, there is quite a lot to unpack in this game from the lengthy singleplayer campaign to the breadth of online multiplayer and training options.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising Review
Screenshot by Siliconera

Without a doubt, I find the overwhelming amount of content to be impressive. But I also find much of it feels pretty standard or even a bit bland. Take the lengthy single-player campaign, for instance. Its cutscenes and voice acting look and sound great, but the actual story itself felt like a snooze. It only worsened when the story progressed. Players go throughout different missions with a UI similar to a mobile game where you select your missions, then embarking on them. The gameplay follows the 2D fighting game style, but in these awkward missions you scroll through the environments as you walk.

The awkward dashing and other mechanics in this game feel fine in the enclosed 2D normal fighting matches, but it doesn't feel right in these mission-based areas. The mission objectives often feel uninspired and dull as well. It usually involves "take out these random easy enemies to level up and continue to the next story cutscene." As such, I got bored with the campaign quite fast.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising Review

But the heart of this game remains the actual core fighting mechanics. After all, most players will likely spend their time battling against others online. I had decent success most of the time with finding opponents to fight against, but I will admit there are some issues with the netplay. Even with a hardwired connection and a decently fast speed, the game feels a bit laggy at times.

That said, whenever I got into an actual match and truly got to experience what Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising can be, it feels and looks fantastic. Outside of my gripes with some of the movement controls like dashing, everything from the various combos for each character to their different weapons to the moves you can pull off feels smooth.

I also appreciated the simple button combos for newcomers like myself. This makes the game a lot easier ,and I was able to feel like I actually could stand toe-to-toe with some of my opponents. This helps this game feel more accessible gameplay-wise than some other fighting games, even if everything else surrounding the title doesn't feel as accessible or interesting to a newcomer like myself.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising Review
Screenshot by Siliconera

In addition to the gameplay, the stunning visual effects and art style for this game also gripped me, which looks akin to the anime series. The gorgeous 2D artwork for each playable character and environment looks hand-drawn. The detail is incredible and it has such gorgeous visuals that I like just admiring the effects sometimes. This is the type of game that looks so pretty when two players who know what they're doing go at it.

That said, I will admit Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising is not for everyone. It isn't for me, as the sometimes filler-like content bloats the experience but, ultimately, feels bland. But the positive is some fighting game fans or existing Granblue Fantasy fans may enjoy this title. It has some solid accessible features. But, unless you played the first game, you should probably check out the free version and see if it is up your alley first.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC.

Tokyo Revengers Last Mission

Victor Entertainment has opened pre-registrations for the mobile and PC versions of Tokyo Revengers: Last Mission. The game will appear first on mobile devices in February 2024, with the PC version set to follow later in the same year.

Last Mission will be a 3D action RPG with a gacha system where players can gather characters from the Tokyo Revengers franchise. It will retell the story from the manga and anime with the existing Japanese voice actors reprising their character roles. The developers will reproduce the real-life Shibuya townscape as the map where fights will take place in the game.

Victor Entertainment recommends iOS 15 as the minimum spec for Apple's iPhone and iPad devices. The Android version recommends a minimum of 4GB memory, Android OS 9.0, and a Snapdragon 845 or Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 as CPU. The PC version has a recommended spec of 8GB memory, Intel Core i3-4150 as CPU, and GeForce GTX 1050 as GPU, with Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 as the operating system.

Victor Entertainment has yet to confirm whether this game will be available or not. The company had previously released Cardcaptor Sakura Repaint Record for mobile devices in 2020, and the 2021 PC release via DMM was available worldwide. However, it abruptly shut down the entire game in late October 2021.

Tokyo Revengers: Last Mission will be available first on Android and iOS mobile devices in February 2024. The PC version will be available later via DMM Games in 2024. In its Japanese press release, Victor Entertainment also revealed plans to release console versions of the game for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

Dark Souls II PS3 and Xbox 360 versions going offline

People who still play Dark Souls II on the PS3 and Xbox 360 will no longer be able to access its online features after March 2024. FromSoftware has announced that it will terminate online services for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions on Sunday, March 31, 2024.

After this date, players on the legacy consoles will have to play the game entirely offline without any multiplayer features and asynchronous bloodstains, shades, and messages. The studio stated the aging and deterioration of game servers as the primary reason for the online shutdown.

As a reminder, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco released the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Dark Souls II worldwide in March 2014. Therefore, exactly ten years will have just passed by the time it shuts down servers for the consoles.

FromSoftware reiterates that the Dark Souls II online shutdown will only happen to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. It reassures players that they can still access the game's online features on the PS4, Xbox One, and Windows PC—both DirectX 9 and 11—versions for the foreseeable future.

This will not be the first time FromSoftware has deactivated online features due to aging servers. In October 2022, the studio abandoned online support for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition due to "an aging system." Similarly, the 2012 PC release had run for ten years when FromSoftware pulled the online plug.

Dark Souls II is available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The game is also playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One via the Scholar of the First Sin edition released in 2015.

Tencent NetEase hit by China gaming regulations

Tencent and NetEase's stocks are dropping at a massive rate due to China introducing new gaming regulations. Tencent's stocks dropped around 16%, while NetEase's fell 25%. [Thanks, Josh Ye!]

The new policies in question focus on online game management. These regulations mainly center on curbing spending in video games, specifically ones with a gacha element or a daily login. Here are some of the new policies that China is setting for its video game companies:

  • Online games will no longer be able to offer rewards for daily logins. They can no longer give rewards for when players first spend money or when they spend money several times in a row.
  • Games need to have a limit on how much players can spend to top up their digital wallets.
  • Developers cannot offer "probability-based lucky draw features" to minors.

Aside from these limitations, game publishers will need to store their servers within China. This likely has more to do with concerns over cybersecurity. A final new regulation will require online game approvals "to be processed by regulators within 60 days."

This is not the first time that China has drafted up regulations in order to curb gaming addiction among younger players. In August 2021, it announced that minors in China will only be allowed to play online games for an hour on weekends and holidays.

In 2020, China also implemented a policy that required real name verification when registering for games. At the time, NetEase and Tencent had their own verification systems, and some games even needed players to undergo facial recognition.

People will have until January 22, 2024, to comment on these rules to the government.

Welcome to the Week in Review
Welcome
Ah, Christmas. That time of year when we stop thinking about tech and start thinking about mulled wine, carols, and bad sweaters. Well, apart from all that time we spend thinking about what tech we’re hoping Santa will bring us, and then once the big day arrives, all that time we spend thinking about how to set it up and actually use it.

Anyway, that’s all still a few days away – before then, it’s time for one final look back at the week in tech for this year. And what a week it was! Apple had a rather nasty Christmas gift to unpack, in the form of a US ban on sales of the Apple Watch 9 and Ultra 2. That’s due to a patent dispute, and it means that if you’re hoping your stocking will contain one of Apple’s newest smartwatches, you might be disappointed.

Elsewhere, we got lots more information about what the Galaxy S24 series might be like, learned about a few nice new Google Chrome features, and discovered that Warner Bros. and Paramount might be merging. Who said this was a quiet time of year?

Next week, we’ll have a special TechRadar Friday newsletter looking back at all of the biggest stories of 2023. Until then, happy holidays!

Max and Paramount Plus could be joining forces
The logo for the new service might look something like this (Warner Bros. Discovery / Paramount Global)
