PCGamesN Monday, January 2, 2023 2:46 PM Deciding on the very best indie games on PC is a task that involves some painful exclusion. The great indie boom triggered by digital distribution a decade ago turned out to be more of a Big Bang, firing small-team development into a plethora of directions that now defy simple categorisation. The sheer volume is intimidating, so we have plenty to choose from when compiling our list of the best indie games. Perhaps too much. But we should take stock, from time to time, to appreciate everything publisher-less development has given us. Some of the games listed below were built in a weekend by first-time coders, while others were crafted by former triple-A creators who've instilled their independent work with the same technical standards. They barely have anything in common but a healthy dose of idiosyncrasy and ideas that make Steam worth spelunking. Siliconera Monday, January 2, 2023 6:00 PM In a feature in Famitsu for New Year's resolutions, Akatsuki Games teased that there will be a lot of announcements in 2023 for Tribe Nine. That is its 3D action RPG that is currently in development. Since it is part of a multimedia franchise, those who are curious about it can watch the anime series for it, which is available on Crunchyroll. [Thanks, Famitsu!] Akatsuki Games is the publisher while Too Kyo Games is the developer. Tribe Nine, like Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, features the creative minds beyond Danganronpa. Like Danganronpa, Kazutaka Kodaka created it, with Rui Komatsuzaki providing the character designs and Masafumi Takada composing the music. Too Kyo Games first announced its development in 2020. Since then, though, there has not been much information on the game. It will be a 3D action RPG with sports elements. The story takes place in a dystopian future in which Tribes (essentially gangs) run amok in Neo-Tokyo. The "XB Law" forces the Tribes to duke it out through "Extreme Baseball," which is exactly what the name implies. Tribe Nine is in development, and we do not yet know when it will come out. According to Akatsuki Games, it will release more information on the Tribe Nine game in 2023. However, Akatsuki Games did not provide a timeline for when to expect news on it. Siliconera Monday, January 2, 2023 4:30 PM According to a Famitsu message from Atlus, sales figures for the remastered ports of Persona 5 Royal surpassed a million units. It achieved this milestone within a month. Including that million, Atlus has now sold a total of 3.3 million copies of Persona 5 Royal worldwide. [Thanks, Famitsu!] Persona 5 Royal originally came out in 2019 for Japan and 2020 for North America on the PS4. However, Atlus ported it to five different platforms on October 21, 2022. So, between October 21, 2022 and November 21, 2022, the remastered ports for Persona 5 Royal sold over a million units worldwide. This number includes sales of Persona 5 Royal on all non-PS4 platforms around the world. The ports of Persona 5 Royal selling over a million copies is not an unprecedented incident. When Persona 4 Golden appeared on Windows PC via Steam, it also sold a million copies. The number for Persona 4 Golden's lifetime sales will likely increase after the additional ports of the game come out on January 19, 2023. Persona 5 Royal was the updated version of Persona 5, which originally came out in 2016 on the PS4. Aside from minute changes to the script, there was a plethora of additional content, ranging from new social links to a new endgame dungeon. It also added Kasumi Yoshizawa and Goro Akechi as permanent playable party members. The ports of the game come with all of the DLC, such as costumes and Personae. Persona 5 Royal is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. There is no free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for the game. You can read our review of the Nintendo Switch port here. The post Sales Figures for Persona 5 Royal Surpass 3.3 Million Units appeared first on Siliconera. |
Siliconera Monday, January 2, 2023 3:00 PM This may surprise you, but games can slip under my radar! Given how many news stories and features you probably see me write here at Siliconera each month, it's likely a shock. (I already passed 250 for December 2022; thanks for asking.) But that also means a deserving title could get overlooked. For me, that was Floppy Knights once the indie strategy game from Rose City shadowdropped onto the Nintendo Switch. It was part of what was essentially the Nintendo House of Indies advent calendar this month, and it couldn't have been a more perfect "present." (Especially since Nintendo decided to be a Grinch and keep Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp from us this year. Floppy Knights is a tactical game with a card-based gimmick. You follow Phoebe and her robot arm/friend Carlton. After quite a bit of time brainstorming and experimenting, she invented the Floppy Knights. These are little units that head into battles on Phoebe's behalf to accomplish tasks. However, when they act, you don't just get a series of actions they can automatically perform. Instead, Phoebe possesses a deck of cards, with a number dealt into her hand each turn allowing a character to move, attack, or perform special actions. When a commander or normal unit is played on the field, you also get a card with its attack or ability at the start of each turn. So you're relying on decks you've made, with cards Phoebe crafted, and characters to help overcome the objectives and bonus objectives in each location. Updates appeared throughout 2022, with Phoebe's Prototypes and Graveyard Shift appearing in August and October. When the Switch version of Floppy Knights launched, the 2.0 third update for the year came with it. Tossing cards and decks into other genres has been a whole thing for a while now. One could argue (or blame) games like Mega Man Battle Network and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, for doing so. (Well, might I add.) We've also seen it come up with other genres lately. For example, Signs of the Sojourner could have been a more typical visual novel with conversations to peruse, but instead you get decks of cards based on experiences, and playing the cards happens instead of an actual talk with someone else. Rose City is picking up on a trend with Floppy Knights and rolling with it in a way that works exceptionally well. Floppy Knights using cards for all of its actions ends up feeling perfect, without being limiting. Especially since the execution means you don't feel like Floppy Knights is forcing you to grind or unnecessarily push yourself. crafting new cards isn't too difficult. Earning the funds for it isn't too taxing. There's no fear about having a hand with cards you can't use, since each character you play automatically generates at least one viable one each turn. Not to mention with the base game and all the updates, there's an ample amount of immediately available cards. Though, in a way, maybe it all was for the best after all? As I mentioned before, the Switch version of Floppy Knights launched alongside a 2.0 update. While this is big for people who aren't new to the game, it means I've had a generally fuller experience with it from the start. It's taken me some time to get to the content, as it didn't appear after heading to the Steelshore Coast with Phoebe and Carlton to get assistance from Rowan against Felix and his Floppy Knights. It also made going through Floppy Knights a bit more exciting, because I did so knowing I'd eventually get to also play as Alex and Snarlton in an additional Side Quest. In any case, Floppy Knights is a delightful game. It's one of those tactical treasures. I'd also say its quite timeless, even if it wasn't for the December 2022 2.0 update that added additional content. The themes, character designs, and gameplay are created in such a way that they are unique, but also harken back to staples. So there's always that emotional draw of wanting to root for someone who wants to succeed for her own merits and talents. With tactical games, there's the appeal of seeing if using different decks or approaches here could still help you win. It's simply a joy to play. Floppy Knights is available on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. The post I Can't Believe I Slept on Floppy Knights Until the Switch Port appeared first on Siliconera. |
Siliconera Monday, January 2, 2023 1:30 PM Aside from more information on Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road of Heroes, Level-5 plans on announcing a completely new game in 2023. This information comes from a message that Level-5 shared with Famitsu in regards to the new year. The game will be a new one separate from any of Level-5's existing franchises. [Thanks, Famitsu!] There is not a lot of information thus far about the new game that Level-5 plans on announcing. At this point, we do not even know the genre or platform. Since 2023 would be the 25th anniversary of Level-5, the new game will be an unprecedented challenge for the company. That is all we know thus far about it. It thanks players for their continued support for Yo-kai Watch: PuniPuni, Yo-Kai Sangokushi, and Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds. Level-5's latest major announcement had to do with Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road of Heroes. It released a trailer showing off what matches would look like, as well as how you would be able to control the soccer players on the field. The trailer featured plenty of familiar and iconic hissatsu moves from a variety of characters.
