Dough Spectrum One review: a top-quality 4k monitor

The Dough Spectrum One is arguably the nicest-looking gaming monitor on the market, thanks to its super slim metal stand and otherwise clean design, but, it's not style over substance. It also has a 4K resolution, 144Hz maximum refresh rate, and some useful other features, but is it one of the best 4K gaming monitors? It won't be a go-to option for esports enthusiasts but as an all-rounder display, it's likely to have wide appeal.

The Dough company used to go by the name Eve, under which it launched a Kickstarter to create community-designed monitors, offering a choice of sizes, resolutions, refresh rates, and various other options. This included the option that still exists to buy the Spectrum One in either glossy or matte panel coatings and to buy the display with or without its stand.

As with so many Kickstarters, the launch didn't exactly go to plan and this potential best gaming monitor candidate arrived late to market with a very high price. However, with a name change and new pricing, this display has the potential to be a modern classic.

The best MMO and MMORPGs to play in 2024

What is the best MMORPG on PC? If you're wondering, those oft-used letters represent the words Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game and refer to games where thousands of players come together in the same world. Is it one with spells to sling and demons to slay? Working your way through the stars as a miner or a corporate bigwig? Solving ancient conspiracies and fighting Lovecraftian horrors? Maybe it's all of them.

Ultimately, the deciding factor for the best MMORPGs on PC largely comes down to personal preference, so with that in mind, here's our list of the top MMOs currently alive and kicking. You're sure to find something that will swallow up entire days at a time, and many of these entries can also be considered some of the best PC games around.      AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 review

AVerMedia's Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 is a hotly anticipated review subject. As the first device to capture 4K footage at 60fps with 4K144 pass-through over HDMI 2.1, this is as cutting-edge a capture tool as currently exists. On that basis, this is the watershed moment many console and PC gamers (including myself) have been waiting for.

Renowned among gamers for the video prowess of its products, AVerMedia is no newcomer to the video capture game, with a legacy dating back to the early 90s, it has a reassuring product history, so when it says it's going to make a simple-to-use 4K HDMI 2.1 capture device, you can be pretty confident it'll be a solid product.

The question is, does it make capturing footage from next-gen consoles and PCs a plug-and-play breeze? I'm hoping this 4K capture card is the start of a new breed of high-spec, easy-to-use products set to shake up the streaming market over the next 12 months and compete with the best capture cards.

Of course, It's not a capture card as such; it's an external USB-C-powered video capture box that draws its juice from a PC (or Mac running Windows) via a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port. To be clear, that's a setup essential rather than a nice-to-have, so make sure your system supports those specs before shelling out for it.

Which brings me neatly to my next question. The Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 isn't cheap. So, has AVerMedia hit the spot with its new capture device, or is that ambitious spec a bridge too far? Read my full AVerMedia Live Gamer Ultra 2.1 review to find out.

Diablo 4 Season 4 release date

When does Diablo 4 Season 4 start? A much-loved feature from Diablo 3 makes its return in D4 with the (re)introduction of seasons, adding everything from new questlines to items, gameplay mechanics, and more. Expanding on the rich, gothic world of Sanctuary, Blizzard makes sure players have plenty to sink their teeth into, whether you're a fresh-faced player taking their first steps into Sanctuary or a grizzled veteran of the Burning Hells.

It may be some time before we'll see Diablo 4 Season 4, but the good news is that it comes after the arrival of D4 on Game Pass.      One of the greatest FPS games in all of PC history is now just $2

What are the most influential PC games in history? Civilization has to be up there. Doom. Half-Life. I'd definitely throw Baldur's Gate into the hat these days, likewise Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. And you know, it's hard to overstate the significance of The Sims. World of Warcraft definitely deserves a mention, too. But if I'm thinking of a specific type of game - an FPS and immersive sim where you discover the entire story through exploration and interaction, and tweak the way you play based on different stats and abilities - one game stands above all. When we first meet The Thaumaturge's hero Wiktor Szulski, we're told he's a man cursed by the vice of pride. It's a trait that sits at the heart of his personality, and in this particular alt-history telling of Polish turmoil in Warsaw at the turn of the twentieth century, such 'Flaws' can also attract the attention of otherworldly beings called Salutors - vicious creatures of myth and folklore who follow their quarry around like dark and gloomy shadows, amplifying their worst qualities and, in many cases, driving them to emotional, and often violent, extremes. It's these outbursts that Wiktor will be investigating over the course of this curious detective RPG from the makers of Seven: The Days Long Gone and the upcoming The Witcher 1 Remake, as fortunately for him, Wiktor comes from a long line of storied Salutor tamers, his thaumaturgic know-how allowing him to see these monsters made flesh, exorcise them from their human host, and use them for his own gains.

He's a man that's ultimately made peace with his own arrogance, then, but considering everything he goes through during The Thaumaturge's 25 hour-odd run-time, I reckon his pride is pretty justified. Not only is he able to brush off multiple stab and gunshot wounds and clubs to the face when he gets in a fight, but he also achieves several feats of thaumaturgy that we're repeatedly told are thought to be nigh on impossible. Indeed, at the start of this game, his connection with his original Salutor Upyr is hanging by a thread, his worst instincts having got the best of him in a recent attempt to tame and capture a second beast from the ether. By the end, however, I had six Salutors at my beck and call, out of a total of eight. Wiktor is very much a force to be reckoned with, and he makes for a highly compelling lead as you navigate the branching storylines in Warsaw's political hotbed.

Review: The Thaumaturge Presents a Captivating Mystery

I can't stop thinking about The Thaumaturge. I already had a sizeable interest in the game, but I expected my time to be consumed by other titles coming around this time. However, all I can think about is how interesting The Thaumaturge is, both as a CRPG and as a fictionalized retelling of a very specific and particular historical period. The story-heavy adventure RPG takes the tricky approach of setting the game's events in real-world Poland during the early 20th century, mixing it with plenty of Slavic folklore and its own magical fiction. However, Developer Fool's Theory is aware that the setting might not be familiar to most and eases the player into learning about the particularities of the period by engaging with the game's simple and effective systems

Despite its roots in esoteric magic and early 20th-century mysticism, at its heart, The Thaumaturge is a period drama. The events of the game are set in 1905 Warsaw during the Russian Partition, and just before the First Russian Revolution and the Revolution in the Kingdom of Poland. The game's Protagonist, Wiktor Szulski, is a young thaumaturge searching for miracle man Grigori Rasputin to heal his connection with Salutor Upyr, the mythical being tied to Wiktor that allows him to execute his magical arts.

During his search, Wiktor receives a letter from his sister Ligia recounting the tragic passing of their father, Stanisław Szulski. Returning to Warsaw for the first time in 15 years, Wiktor sees himself involved in the complicated political and cultural landscape of turn of the century Poland, and in the search for his father's only legacy to him, his Black Grimoire. Wiktor's lack of familiarity with the city serves as a way to introduce the player to the setting while helping the character reconnect and remember his past (both in and out of Warsaw,) grounding him in his new reality.

1905 Warsaw is a fascinating and refreshing period to set the game in, and the developers' familiarity and research of their own history is evident. The plot is removed enough from the actual events of the two World Wars that it allows room to breathe and not indulge in the misery of the period while still letting players recognize the familiar elements that will soon lead to that bloody historical period. At the same time, Wiktor is a unique character in the way he belongs to both the privileged bourgeoisie and a growingly distrusted community of secretive magic practitioners.

This allows him to mingle with both members of Russian high society and various of the marginalized groups living in Warsaw. Wiktor himself having a Russian mother and a Polish father is a point of contention in his many relationships. His particular position puts him close to neither high society nor the commonfolk, and Wiktor is constantly faced with choosing to either prove himself to the imperialist forces as a true loyalist or to make a concerted effort to show solidarity to working-class folks, revolutionary socialists, and the members of the Jewish and Romani community he interacts with.

Another important theme and mechanic in The Thaumaturge is that of human Flaw. As a thaumaturge, Wiktor can detect the temperament and feelings that people leave behind in the world and detect Flaws that Salutors (otherworldly tricksters, spirits, and beings) cling to. Thaumaturges are capable of detecting and stirring emotions in the dimensions of Heart, Mind, Deed, and Word, manipulating people's emotions through their Flaws and absorbing them in order to grow their own connections with Salutors of their respective dimensions.

This turns the game into a detective and sleuthing game of sorts, where Wiktor can solve conflict by reading the intention and feelings behind character's acts in the past. While Wiktor starts with single salutor Upyr, he soon grows a cavalcade of peculiar beings deep rooted into Slavic folklore, as well as myths from other parts of the world. In gameplay, these translate into stats that unlock new dialogue choices and actions, such as tricking characters into doing Wiktor's bidding, distracting them from their mission, or provoking them into combat.

On the topic of combat, fighting in The Thaumaturge is intuitive and entertaining. It vaguely reminded me of Darkest Dungeon. Combat is turn-based, and it involves Wiktor and one of his Salutors (acting as a party member) fighting against groups of 2 to 4 people at a time. While this might seem like a disadvantage, Salutors are extremely powerful and can be swapped at any time, although they require specific setups and strategies to show their full potential. Each round, the player has the choice to damage HP directly with quick or powerful slow attacks, inflict damage-over-time status effects that quickly snowball, or break an enemy's Focus to deliver a devastating strong attack.

Salutors get even more flashy and specific actions that can also heal Wiktor or disrupt enemy actions. Action variety is seemingly limited, but it works well and has more depth than it seems. Thwarting enemy turns before they have the chance to act is particularly satisfying. At the beginning, fights don't happen often enough that they become boring, and can feel like an event during main missions. However, the lack of variety in the long run and the inability to speed up actions can make them a bit tedious. Leveling up each Dimension will unlock new actions for Wiktor and grant different skills to power them up.

Combos like inflicting the Suffering DoT status, and gnawing at an enemy's Focus are very effective early in the game, whereas later on I trivialized every encounter by quickly depleting a single character's Focus, dealing massive damage to any other enemy in battle with Salutor Krampus, and finishing the remaining enemy with Morana. Acquiring new Salutors is very exciting, as they open new possibilities in both exploration and combat. While I generally enjoyed combat, it is easy to feel like some Salutors are outclassed by others very quickly, making them very situational. Additionally, fights against Salutors are always exciting, but regular human enemies can feel a bit repetitive down the line. I would have appreciated some level of variety in enemy types and actions.

The world of The Thaumaturge is a gift that keeps on giving. From the areas of PowiÅ›le and Port Praga bathed by the Vistula River to the urban district of ÅšródmieÅ›cie, every district in Warsaw is its own diorama, full of meticulous detail and attention. The interiors of each locale are nothing to scoff at either, with the Szulski Family House and the Imperial Hotel having some incredible architecture and stunning decor. As I got further into the game, I started to miss the visual variety that the rural areas of Georgia offered during the prologue, but I understood the concession. The soundtrack of the game is as equally wonderful as its visuals, making a very unique sounding game, inspired by the sounds of the multiple cultures meeting in Warsaw. Exploring Warsaw also offers benefits from a gameplay and narrative perspective. The game expects you to check out and discover all the little collectibles that are around the city.

These not only help giving a sizeable boost to experience, but also gives essential context into the setting. Developer Fool's Theory is aware that depicting this time period comes with its own set of problems, as the concept of Orientalism was not something explored at the time, and deeming foreign things as "exotic" was commonplace. However, the developers were aware of this, and instead of tackling it in an insensitive manner, they decided to address its existence without having Wiktor directly participate. Instead, Wiktor witnesses these elements outside of the plot as supporting text coloring the depiction of the era. These include people enjoying "exotic" fruits like oranges, beverages like soda or coffee that are coming from "the West," trendy silk fabrics, colonial stores resting at every corner, and dances and performances from other cultures, as well as other cultural activities and elements native to 1905 Warsaw.

In the same vein, the treatment of historically marginalized groups in Europe at the turn of the century is not ignored, but I think it was tackled with care. The game doesn't shy away from including some of the harsher elements of bigotry and growing ultranationalism during the early 20th century and includes characters with regressive and fascistic ideas as clear-cut villains. However, they are never depicted directly executing heinous acts on screen, and instead lets the player fill in the gaps for these darker expressions of cruelty and prejudice.

I found this execution to be an effective and powerful way of alluding to the historical and material reality of the times without using the victims of this type of violence as punching bags or relying on shock value to make a point. I also feel like it's important to point out that I do not belong to any of the cultures or groups depicted in the game, so my views are more limited than those of someone with firsthand lived experiences belonging to these identities.

I suspect I'm going to continue thinking about The Thaumaturge for a long time. The game is easy to pick up and very difficult to put down. While it might look like a very specific CRPG for a very specific type of audience, I feel like the way it combines its setting, storytelling, and mechanics makes for an extremely compelling game and a strong contender for those looking to get into CRPGs.

The Thaumaturge is now available for PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.

Holo X Break Steam

A Steam page has opened for upcoming Hololive fan-made beat-em-up Holo X Break, from Holocure developer Kay Yu. The game will also launch under the Holo Indie label, though there is currently no release date.

The development of Holo X Break was announced earlier this month with a trailer featuring the voices of several Hololive Vtubers starring in the game. Despite the Holo Indie label allowing fan game developers to monetize their work, the Steam page confirms that the game will be free and also include up to 4 player local and online multiplayer.

Developer Kay Yu also took to Twitter to explain why Holo X Break will appear under the official label while Holocure did not. The answer involves the difficulty of changing workflows to accommodate the involvement of Cover Corp. staff. You can find the announcement tweet below:

https://twitter.com/HoloCureGame/status/1764742610952859985

Cover Corp. outlined guidelines for the Holo Indie label back in November 2023, allowing the developers of Hololive fan games to monetize their work. One of the first games to debut under the label was HoloParade, a side-scrolling tower-defense game featuring Hololive talents and mascots.

Holo X Break will launch on Steam but currently does not have a release date.

I Can't Help Loving Yuffie in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

When I first played Final Fantasy VII on my PC in high school, I hated Yuffie. I thought she was annoying. I didn't feel like she brought anything to the party. I felt an obligation to get her, but then never used her. However, thanks the way Yuffie plays and behaves in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, I couldn't help not only loving her, but feeling like she might be one of my most valuable allies.

I was a bit worried about Yuffie in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, because while I did enjoy her INTERmission DLC and how it attempted to offer more insight into why she was around Midgar, I still didn't really click with her right away. I liked Sonon as a character more, and I also ended up more excited about seeing Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII Deepground cameos than her. She was fine? Clearly, the tone was tempered to humanize her a bit more.

But once I got into Final Fantasy VII Rebirth proper, I saw how much better Yuffie is as a character and party member than she ever was before. I think it's because now she isn't optional and better integrated into the story. We're seeing her initially as an agent focused on her own task, to the point where she'll even sell out other people who helped her to get an edge. We watch as she commits the the assassination attempt, with the part of her trying to still her breathing and aim properly as a reminder that this is just a teenager being tasked with a mission far beyond her years. Once she's in Costa del Sol being more childish, then coming through with a save, it really cements that maybe she's not really annoying. Maybe she's just a young adult dealing with terrible things in a dangerous world who is getting by as best she can, while still trying to preserve her signature energy and enthusiasm.

Or maybe I'm just making excuses because once she's fully in your party, Yuffie is absolutely incredible in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Is there a flying enemy? Throw the shuriken and mash the attack button. Is there an enemy with an elemental weakness? Use Fire, Ice, Lightning, or Wind Ninjutsu, throw the shuriken, and mash the attack button. Do you want to stagger an enemy swiftly? Use the Doppelganger ability, throw the shuriken, and mash the attack button. She's even great at dealing damage to a large group, thanks to abilities like Shooting Star and Windstorm.

Her being an absolute force in battle pairs well with the little things that help define Yuffie's personality and make her lovable. The fact that she gets car sick when traveling via any method of transportation that isn't a Chocobo. How when she and Tifa found the baby bird, they both decided it was Cloud Jr. and "Cloud, but cute." How when they're in Gongaga and she's dealing with a small town, she has her little "bored" song. The fact that she adds lyrics to the Chocobo theme song while she's riding one. How when we met Dio during the Gold Saucer dance number, she was mesmerized by his physique. She acts like an exuberant teenager, and it's fantastic. Rather than being annoying by it, like I was as a teenager, I'm embracing it all.

Not to mention Square Enix still pays tribute to what it was like to actually recruit Yuffie back in the day in Final Fantasy VII. When you finally get her to join your party after the events in Costa del Sol, she meets you outside Johnny's inn. A conversation ensues, which is like the original in that you're constantly needing to respond to her questions, boasts, and challenge. Naturally, she'll end up in the party either way. But the fact that it plays out similarly is really fun, and I feel it makes her more likable.

In short, after so many years I finally really adore Yuffie as a character, and it is all because of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. She really stands out as an individual, both because she's so handy in battle and is better integrated into the story this time around.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available on the PS5, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024.

Sega Shared Atlus Vending Machine With Persona 5 Morgana Design

The official Sega social media account shared a picture of a Persona 5 decorated vending machine, and it features Morgana decorations as a wrap on it. It customizes the lower half of the company's machine.

Morgana appears on two parts of the machine in the picture. He is perched on top of the coin return on the right side. It's designed to make it look like he is peeking inside at the money that might have dropped.

On the opposing side is a giant Morgana head. This shows him smiling and peeking over the botton corner, with part of the design also covering the product dispenser flap.

Here's the full photo of the Atlus vending machine with Persona 5 Morgana decorations.

https://twitter.com/SEGA_OFFICIAL/status/1764497277589303495

While it likely isn't possible for someone to recreate this in their own home, Atlus teamed up with companies in the past for other decorations people can actually own. For example, the Useless Use Lab collections involved Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal items like a desktop humidifier and a speaker

Persona 5 is available on the PS3 and PS4, while Persona 5 Royal is available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

WonderSwan 25th Anniversary merchandise - apparel and smartphone cases

Bandai Namco is celebrating the 25th anniversary of WonderSwan by releasing new merchandise featuring the classic portable console. The company is working with Amazon and General Sticker to release a variety of merchandise ranging from stickers to apparel.

The Amazon Japan website features a new page dedicated to WonderSwan-themed Merch on Demand items that range from apparel like T-shirts and parka hoodies to smartphone cases for iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy S8. General Sticker's online store on Rakuten also has a new category page showcasing WonderSwan stickers and keychains that are priced at under 1,000 yen individually.

While the Amazon Merch on Demand items are confirmed to be available exclusively in Japan, the overseas availability of General Sticker's items is ambiguous. The Rakuten website in general supports international shipping with its Rakuten Global Express service. However, the listing page for each WonderSwan merchandise shows no support for shipping outside Japan when "Overseas" is chosen at the bottom of the destination list.

The WonderSwan was a portable game console that Bandai released on March 4, 1999. It was also the last console to be developed by the Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi before he died in a car accident in 1997. The console also featured accessories that let it connect with other gaming gadgets, such as Sony's PocketStation and the Digivices from the Digimon franchise. Bandai released two enhanced models later on, which were the WonderSwan Color in 2000 and SwanCrystal in 2002. However, it ultimately discontinued the whole console family in 2003. All of the consoles were also released exclusively in Japan.

There were no new portable console reveals to mark the 25th anniversary of WonderSwan on March 4, 2024. However, a variety of merchandise inspired by the legacy console is now available for purchase in Japan.

Temte Final Updates

Crema, developer of the creature-training game Temtem, released an open letter to players discussing the game's final updates and the future of the franchise and the studio. The first of these updates is 1.7, and it is set to arrive in June, 2024, and will remove microtransactions from the game.

The letter began with the team at Crema apologizing for confusion around the use of the term MMO to describe the game and for the failure to implement the promised API into it. After that it addressed the demand for new content and TemTem types, the team decided that the amount of player retention these updates garnered did not reflect the amount of time and effort put into them. While DLC was considered, Crema did not want to split the playerbase or introduce potential pay-to-win elements. It will instead be focusing on other projects, such as the upcoming TemTem: Swarm and Project: Downbelow. An offline mode is also not planned due to slim server costs, meaning they expect the servers to remain perpetually online.

The studio then went on to detail the upcoming 1.7 and 1.8 updates coming to the game, the latter of which is intended to be the final "feature-oriented patch." Update 1.7 is intended to launch sometime in June 2024, and it will bring a new season, a new Tamer Pass, and remove the premium currency Novas from the game. Items previously purchasable with Novas will now be available for Feathers instead. Update 1.8 will make previous Tamer Passes available to switch between and complete to reduce "fear of missing out."

Temtem launched out of Early Access with Update 1.0 back in September, 2022, which also brought the game to Switch and Xbox. More recently, Crema announced the development of TemTem: Swarm, a Vampire Survivors-like game hoping to launch in quarter 3 of 2024.

TemTem is available now on PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X, with the first of the final feature updates set to arrive sometime in June 2024.
