Mostly 2D with some straightforward combat, tricky platforming, light RPG mechanics, and abilities to find that help you explore castles, alien-infested planets, dungeons, caves, whimsical forests, and so on, it's quite difficult to put down a Metroidvania until you've beaten every boss and revealed every nook on the map. Exploration is key here, so if you're looking for 2D action platformers without much in the way of it, you won't find them here. The two games that popularized the Metroidvania genre, Nintendo's Super Metroid and Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, aren't available on PC. For Nintendo it's understandable – they're notorious for keeping their franchises on their systems – but for some reason Konami hasn't brought unarguably the best Metroidvania game to PC yet. I've just finished (well, reached a grisly end within) the demo for Chiyo, a first-person horror game from Nimbus Games, set in Edo era Japan, in which you are a plucky young mystic sent by the Tokugawa Shogunate's Magical Arcane Division to investigate and cleanse a spooky abandoned mansion on the coast. Much like the protagonist of fellow Japan-set exor-simulator Ghostwire: Tokyo, you have a brace of occult, gesture-based powers with which to explore and, hopefully, vanquish any lurking spirits, but so far, the only ones I've gotten access to are a funky finger torch, the ability to unseal cursed doors, and the ability to see glowing puzzle props through surfaces. I very much do not feel like an Edo era John Constantine. I don't even feel like an Edo era Scooby Doo. I mean, at least he was good at running away: the titular Chiyo waddles about like she's worried her trousers are about to fall down. |

For those with a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, the farming simulator and action-RPG Fae Farm will be available to try out for free starting today via the Game Trials program. The full game will be available to download and play for free from November 22-28, 2023, so long as you have a Nintendo account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
This free game trial for Fae Farm won't be available in all countries. However, since Fae Farm supports multiplayer, you will be able to play with others even if you only have the trial version of the game downloaded. Note that like the free game trial,
The free Game Trial for Fae Farm can be downloaded from the Nintendo eShop at any time during the trial period. You can also confirm your download of the game on Nintendo's official website. However, once the trial period is over, the game will be unplayable. Your save data will not be deleted though, so if you decide to purchase the full game after the trial period ends, you can pick up where you left off. You will need a reliable internet connection to initially access the game. During the trial period, the game will also be 25% off.
Fae Farm is available now on the Nintendo Switch and PCs via Steam.

These incredible pieces of kit can only be held one at a time, but their abilities are worth it. All Masterworks Ranked in Return to Moria Below are the four primary Masterworks in Return to Moria. I have omitted the Masterworks that relate to the story due to spoiler reasons, and as they aren't really that useful outside of their plot relevance. So you can imagine where I'd place them in this ranking. Also, they don't count toward the Masterwork Achievement. From worst to best, here is the ranking. Wanderkeg The Wanderkeg allows you to store a large amount of booze for you and your party's drinking pleasure.
