Modders are working to fix Fallout London's new canine companion

Oh yes, every game should have a dog companion and that's especially true for a Fallout game. From Dogmeat in the first game to, uh, Dogmeat in Fallout 4 - canines and our characters have gone hand in paw since the series began. Fallout: London is no exception and its lovely little lad is a bulldog named Churchill, but he doesn't always behave quite like you'd expect. Thankfully, modders are hard at work, and they're already making great strides forward with this pup.

Infest is a roguelike deckbuilder that channels Worms' strategy design

More games should have destructible levels. If the humble Worms series, long a mainstay of laughing with your friends over the most diabolical ways to murder one another with makeshift traps, can do it, other games can, too. While we do have shooters and action games like Battlefield 5, Just Cause 3, and Red Faction Guerrilla to scratch this itch, it's largely been up to smaller teams, like those responsible for Teardown, to give us interesting ways to play with level structure. The latest example of this is Infest, which marries turn-based strategy with roguelike deckbuilding and, most importantly, features a wildly open ended approach to environmental destruction and manipulation.

Certainly, nobody wants a guy whose ideas about automobiles come from 2018's Wreckfest to be involved in the school run. It's a hell of a thing to showcase a remake weeks after kiboshing the developers of the original game. In early July, Gothic creators Piranha Bytes were reportedly shuttered as part of Embracer Group's mad race to trim costs, following their decade-long acquisition binge. Watching THQ Nordic's new Gothic Remake trailer, below, feels a little like watching a vivisectionist parade about in somebody else's skin. Still, the remake's developers Alkimia Interactive aren't to blame for Embracer's fuck-ups, and I am selfishly happy to see Gothic return as an Unreal Engine 5 production - even if I didn't play the original back in 2001.

Sin did play the original game, and in her 2016 retrospective, she paints an absorbing picture of a dark fantasy "microsociety" in which every community "has a reason to exist, a means of providing for itself, a social order, and a long term goal". It's a setup that reminds me of my beloved Roadwarden, even as the sight of grumpy lizards slinking through undergrowth has me silently mouthing "fus roh dah".

Titan Quest 2! Now there's a name you can set your watch by. No colons, no bespoke jargon, no tortuous subtitles like "Gaia's B.O.U.N.T.Y." or "Hyperion's Wild Rumpus" - just the steadying prospect of a titanic quest that, who knows, may involve actual titans. The action-RPG beneath the moniker appears similarly straightforward: it's about following a plot thread through a mythological world in top-down view, smashing Ancient Greek giga-crabs and the like to obtain shinier, pointier varieties of gear. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that there's an endgame in which you farm monsters for crafting materials.

Like Pandora opening her box, but without the accompanying tidal wave of sickness, curses and death, THQ Nordic have released a new trailer that talks you though all of this in detail. Here it is...

japan xbox expensive

The Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S in Japan will become more expensive in Japan from August 15, 2024. This change will only affect Japan and it is likely due to the poor economy in that country. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Here are the new adjusted prices for Xbox consoles in Japan:

  • Xbox Series X: 59,978 JPY to 66,978 JPY
  • Xbox Series S 1TB (Black): 44,578 JPY to 49,978 JPY
  • Xbox Series S 512GB: 37978 JPY to 44,578 JPY

As mentioned earlier, this change is likely due to the weaker yen. According to Windows, it changed the prices as a result of changes in the market. These prices will only go into effect on August 15, 2024. So if you're in Japan without one of the above Xbox models and you were thinking of getting one, you might want to purchase a model before they become more expensive.

This is not the first time that consoles became more expensive as a result of some sort of economic challenge. Back in 2022, the PS5 became more expensive in various regions and countries. This was, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, due to "challenging economic conditions" from inflation, as well as "adverse currency trends." In other words, Sony raised the prices of the PS5 for the exact same reasons Microsoft is making Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles more expensive.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles in Japan will see a price adjustment in August 15, 2024, and they will become more expensive.

Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable Feels Like a Spider-Man Game

Attack on Titan follows these soldiers who use their equipment to go soaring through the skies to take down colossal enemies. Seems like a good game premise, right? It's happened before, and they can be fun! When it comes to an Attack on Titan VR game, it seems like the sort of thing to go into more cautiously due to all the movement and the concerns about VR sickness or handling it right, but the execution Univrs used almost makes it feel like a Spider-Man sort of game.

I just really wish the titans' models weren't so hideous and weird-looking.

Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable Feels Like a Spider-Man Game
Screenshot by Siliconera

Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable is an early access game, so it isn't all there yet. The concept is that titans are again attacking the cities and getting inside the walls, just like they did in the iconic opening parts of the manga and anime. In the two chapters you have access to, you can see what it's like to fight back against them.

I was incredibly worried going into Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable. All of the early details and videos made it seem like a very active game. After all, it focuses on the Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) gear and zipping around the map. You're even, ideally, supposed to be attacking while swinging too. The funny thing is while walking on the ground sometimes did feel a little uncomfortable, I didn't feel uneasy or ill at all while actually using the ODM to fly around. It is really accommodating! It's always the main reason why Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable felt like a Spider-Man game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BijYiRhxEGU

See, Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable actually gets really in-depth about movement, and the actions used to soar seemed like ones Peter Parker or Miles Morales would use. If you want to quickly scale in one set, defined direction, you aim both the left and right controllers in such a way that their reticles line up together and look like a diamond. Then, you pull back on them. (Like how Parker or Morales would probably pull back on webbing.) After that, you then sort of pull and swing toward areas. Even the nature of swinging the blades that you can pick up, replace with new blades, and use to swipe at the back of titans' necks or appendages feel like maybe a certain friendly, neighborhood superhero might with a weapon. It's really neat and feels good.

So the gameplay is strong. But, in some cases, the depictions of characters isn't? It's weird. As part of the introduction and tutorial, Levi saves you as you're being eaten by a titan. (Like as in you actually see yourself going over the lips, past the gums, look out stomach…) It looked like a 3D model, from what I saw, and it was great! But then when story segments with Armin came up, he very clearly looked like an unmoving, 2D figure. Like instead of animated segments setting things up, you'd see him static and flat in one position, the game would cut to black, you'd see him static in another position, things would cut to black again, and so on. I'd have preferred static images like the used for the introductory and expository segments instead.

But I would take the Paper Mario version of Armin any day over the ugly titans. They look so bad in Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable that they aren't even scary. They're just disgusting. It made me appreciate the Koei Tecmo Attack on Titan games more, as at least there these fearsome foes actually seem scary and menacing. In the VR adaptation, they're too dopey and goofy to feel like a threat. I mean, yes, you will die in only two hits if one manages to actually swat at you before you get in the right position to attack them. But the enemy models and designs just look bad.

I mean, look! Gross.

Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable Feels Like a Spider-Man Game
Screenshot by Siliconera

I will say that even though these are goofy and abominable, at least it is easy to see the neck for attacks. Also, the arms and legs are easy to swipe at and attack, so there are no hitbox issues when striking at them.

I am genuinely curious about how the final version of Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable is going to turn out, as the ODM mechanics are surprisingly fun! Like it really offered a sense of freedom, without making me feel queasy. Well, unless I was looking at a titan. Or needing to really quick spin and maneuver in circles to get around a titan to attack it. You know what I mean. There are some rough spots, which honestly could be due to it being an early access title. But it may prove to be an interesting Attack on Titan game, or at least a fun not-Spider-Man game with Spider-Man-like mechanics.

Attack on Titan VR: Unbreakable Early Access is live now on the  Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro

It's always the way, you turn up in the captain's inn looking to meet someone new and there's no-one right for you around.      Five years later, top-rated submarine milsim Uboat arrives in full

Uboat stands out as one of the best military simulators on PC to date. Rather than feature a broad view of the Second World War as in strategy games like Company of Heroes 3, Uboat focuses on Germany's submarine warfare with the same granularity as World of Tanks, War Thunder, or World of Warships. It's also been in Early Access on Steam for a very long time, gathering acclaim while its creators worked toward its final version, and has now, at last, come out in full with an accompanying launch discount.

LOTRO just got way harder and much more relaxing, all at the same time

J. R. R. Tolkien's famous fantasy creation is one filled with vast dichotomies, much like the period of history he lived through. You have the bucolic existence of the Hobbits contrasting with Sauron and Saruman's industrial evils, being weaved together throughout the story before culminating in the Scouring of the Shire. That sense of wild contrast is fully alive in The Lord of the Rings Online, which has just unleashed some new horrors on players while also giving them the most relaxing hobby ever to enjoy.

Amazing horror game The Mortuary Assistant is somehow even scarier now

Transcending jump scares, gore effects, oppressive music, and affecting monster designs, the best horror games are the ones that are scary even when nothing is happening. Go back to the classic, 1998 Resident Evil 2 and take a walk around the first floor of the police station. The whole place just makes your blood tingle. Likewise, that long, winding walk at the start of Silent Hill 2. Nothing is happening - but every part of you is on high alert. Released to well-deserved acclaim in 2022, The Mortuary Assistant is a masterclass in mundane fear. One of the tensest, most terrifying games I've played in years, it's now, somehow, even scarier.

Nvidia is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in response to claims by competitors that the company is using antitrust practices to gain and maintain its dominant position in the AI GPU market.      After eight years, brutal RPG Salt and Sanctuary just got a lot harder

What's the hardest game you've ever played? Ninja Gaiden always used to top the list, but now my mind immediately goes to Dark Souls and the upper difficulties of XCOM 2. Elden Ring has its moments, especially Shadow of the Erdtree, and Dwarf Fortress can definitely catch you out. But don't forget old Salt and Sanctuary. Originally released back in 2016, the soulslike RPG with bags of visual flair may look a little lighter than FromSoft's creations, but if you don't take its 2D combat seriously, it can rip you to pieces. The long term success of No Man's Sky continues to impress as, following its latest Worlds Part 1 update, it has become the fifth most played game by Steam Deck users. The Steam Deck top played chart for July 2024 shows the game has risen a massive 32 places compared to June 2024, and the latest weekly chart changes suggest it even peaked as high as number three before dropping back to number four for this week.

The Steam Deck top played chart is a great way for gamers not only to see how the fate of any given game is going but also to see what new or old games might be worth a try on their own best gaming handheld.      Best Warzone RPK loadout - JAK Cataclysm conversion

What is the best RPK loadout? There are many aftermarket parts in Warzone; some are merely there to add a bit of flavor to your weapons, while some - like the BP50's SMG mod - elevate the gun and create something completely new from a weapon that had perhaps fallen out of the meta. The JAK Cataclysm conversion mod for the RPK is perhaps the most devastatingly effective aftermarket part we've seen so far - here's our best loadout so you can get the most out of this overpowered LMG.

With the new Warzone season in full flow, players are starting to get to grips with the best Warzone guns - the meta has had quite the shakeup since the beginning of season 5, with the Kar98 falling out of favor and the best Warzone STG loadout taking over the battlefield. The first World Of Goo was a cheerful parade of goopy engineering with a sense of never-ending novelty (well, never-ending for about four hours). Every level would introduce a new goo type or a twist on the basic bridge-building puzzle that challenged you to get a gaggle of gurgling balls to the nearest pipe. World Of Goo 2 pursues that sense of novelty with just as much twitchy eagerness as its predecessor, throwing new toys and goos at the player in an effort to keep you on your sludge-coated toes. That pursuit doesn't always result in pleasing new levels, though. There is a "hit and miss" feeling to things this time around. But those hits are hits. For anyone who has spent the last 16 years yearning for more sticky structure-building: I hope you like comically unpredictable fluids.

Now Mountaintop Studios, a new studio whose ranks include ex-Bungie and Respawn devs, have chucked themselves into the tactical FPS gauntlet with Spectre Divide. Made with input from former CS pro and streamer Shroud, it looks a bit like a mix of CS and Valorant, but has a big gimmick that sets it apart from the two: you can swap between two bodies. This week's mass layoffs at Destiny studio Bungie were planned out months ago, former employees have told journalist Stephen Totilo at Game File (paywalled). According to Totilo, Bungie leadership "overstated their studio's financial prospects to Sony" after the latter bought Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 billion. The latest cuts were necessary to prevent continued losses, says the report, after Bungie missed Sony's targets following the release of last year's Lightfall.

Final Fantasy XIV 2024 Moonfire Faire Offers Emote, Bomb Balloons

The Final Fantasy XIV Moonfire Faire, a recurring summer-themed FFXIV event, is about to return on August 8, 2024 with a new Uchiwasshoi emote and Bomb balloon furnishing. People get just over two weeks to earn both, as well as pick up past event items at in-game vendors, before the event ends on August 26, 2024.

If you're at level 30 (or hit it during the event period), head on over to Limsa Lominsa, Upper Decks (X:11.5, Y:13.8). You'll find the NPC Mayaru Moyaru waiting for you there. (He's a Lalafell.) Talk to him to start the quest "Fire Red, Beast Green." This will get you a chance to take part in the Moonfire Faire.

The Uchiwasshoi emote in FFXIV makes a player's character wave a fan with a Namazu face on it. The Namazu themselves wave similar sorts of fans in-game. (The cover of the picture book The Namazu and the Greatest Gift even shows one with a fan.) Meanwhile, the Bouncing Bomb Balloon furnishing item lets you place a decoration that involves blue, red, and yellow Bomb-shaped balloons on any tabletop in FFXIV.

Here's how the FFXIV Moonfire Faire emote and furnishing will look:

In 2023, the Moonfire Faire event reward was Phoenix Riser armor. The 2022 run added Summer Sunset gear. A Polar Bear mount and Moonfire Mask stall furnishing showed up in 2021.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the Moonfire Faire will run in FFXIV between August 8-26, 2024.

Genshin Impact Natlan Trailer Introduces Lil' Buddy

HoYoVerse shared a new Genshin Impact trailer for the Natlan region that seems to show a baby Geovishap referred to as "Lil' Buddy" accompanying the Traveler. After it steps away from Aether and Paimon, it walks around the new region and gives the viewer a chance to see notable places that will debut in 5.0.

The Genshin Impact "Natlan Preview Teaser - Lil' Buddy" begins with the new character standing behind Aether and Paimon as they sit on a platform overlooking some cliffs and a valley. It's distinguished from other, enemy monsters by the red and yellow bow on their tail. After being distracted by a bird, it follows it and goes on a brief journey through a cavern with ruins and crystals, a place alongside a river, and a small settlement in a valley and beside a lake.

After burrowing underground for a bit in the same way a Geovishap Hatchling does in Genshin Impact, Lil' Buddy encounters one of the Natlan enemies. It looks like some sort of Elemental Lifeform, with a green color that suggested it could be a Dendro element one. After Lil' Buddy roars at it, the opponent turns around. This causes Lil Buddy to turn around and run away.

Here's the full teaser trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCxbxTI_zL0

We should learn more about Lil' Buddy and other elements soon. HoYoVerse will hold the 5.0 Special Program for the game on August 15, 2024.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the 5.0 update is expected to arrive at the end of August 2024.

All FFVII Life Is Strange: Double Exposure Outfit Pack Costumes Detailed

We already knew that a Final Fantasy VII Outfit Pack DLC, with costumes partially inspired by the FFVII Remake trilogy, would be a part of Life is Strange: Double Exposure Ultimate Edition. Now Square Enix shared screenshots and details about every outfit in it.

When Square Enix first announced the pack, it showed Max in a Moogle hat like the one resembling Yuffie's hood in FFVII Remake. It turns out that hat and matching coat are the character's outdoors outfit in this FFVII Outfit Pack. There are also four shirts based on staple mascots and monsters. There's a red Bomb shirt, a green Cactaur cardigan, a V-neck Chocobo sweater, and a black Tonberry turtleneck.

Here are all the Life is Strange: Double Exposure FFVII Outfit Pack DLC screenshots showing Max in the four newly revealed costumes:

This is one of five pieces of DLC that comes with the $79.99 Ultimate Edition of the game. In addition to the FFVII Outfit Pack, people also get Decades, Fan Favorite, Paw Prints, and Spooky Outfit ones.

Life is Strange: Double Exposure will be available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on October 29, 2024. A Nintendo Switch version is in development, but there's no release window for that just yet.

ROMhacking.net closing site

Nightcrawler, the administrator of the ROMhacking.net website that is home to fan-made rom translations, patches, hacks, tools, and documentation, announced the site is closing. It was founded in 2004, following the launch and demise of a previous site called The Repository (ROMhacking.com).

People will still be able to access existing tools and rom patches for homebrew games, hacks, and fan translations for the time being. Backups of those and the site database are also at Internet Archive. People can also still visit and read for the time being, and the forums are active. However, only news submissions will be accepted.

In the announcement, Nightcrawler noted a desire to close at the end of 2023 and considered handing it over to other individuals. The statement claimed those who would have taken over would have cut the administrator out and share their personal information. It is then that the decision to close the site and cut out social media and Discord.

ROMhacking.net was known for being a home for documentation, utilities, fonts, an online patcher and hasher, and of course the ROM patches for homebrew and translation updates. For example, the last two fan translations shared on July 31, 2024 were an English patch for the Game Boy title From TV Animation One Piece: Yume no Luffy Kaizokudan Tanjou by Parmentation and an English patch for the PC98 game Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes by NLeseul.

It is unknown how long files will remain posted on ROMhacking.net proper.

Dynasty Warriors Origins - Yuan Shao action command

Koei Tecmo has uploaded the official Dynasty Warriors Origins action gameplay footage which premiered at ChinaJoy 2024 on its YouTube channels. The videos uploaded on the company's American and European channels also include English subtitles for the audio explanations in Japanese by Tomohiko Sho, the game's producer.

The company split the footage into two separate videos. The first one shows the tutorial stage that takes place in 183 AD, which was around the time Zhang Jiao established the Yellow Turbans.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1rtZfwfREc

The second video shows a more general view of the gameplay flow, as the protagonist moves out from a camp on the world map to access the Battle of Sishui Gate in 190 AD.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGUBe0ZeFZE

The above videos feature Chinese voiceovers, but Tomohiko Sho has confirmed that the full game will also have Japanese and English voice options. In addition, the game will have subtitle support in nine languages.

Japanese interviews with Famitsu and 4Gamer also revealed more details about the action gameplay system in Dynasty Warriors Origins. The game will stray away from Dynasty Warriors 9's State Combo system and stay closer to the charge attack chains from earlier entries. However, each weapon type will have a more varied moveset instead of adhering to an established template. In prior Dynasty Warriors games, □□△ / XXY would let players launch a stun attack with most weapons.

In addition, the interviews revealed how Sho's development team in Omega Force decided to name the new game Dynasty Warriors Origins instead of Dynasty Warriors 10, as they want to return to the series' roots. This game will have features that appeared in the series' early PS2-era entries, such as the more aggressive enemy archers and a personalized bodyguard unit for the player character.

However, Tomohiko Sho noted that the game's original protagonist will have a fixed personality without any customization features beyond changing his name. While the protagonist can wield multiple weapons, the players must use him most of the time, as the access to control existing series characters like Guan Yu will only be available at certain points during battles.

Dynasty Warriors Origins will be available worldwide on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2025.
