The best sandbox games on PC 2023

The best sandbox games are difficult to nail down, as the sandbox style is spread across countless genres with disparate mechanics and settings. But all sandboxes share a common trait: freedom. Whether it's creating a whole world or building up a gang of criminals across a city, sandbox games leave most of the agency up to the player. They are universes to be experienced at a pace not dictated by developers.

Some of the best PC games of all time are those which allow total player freedom, but there needs to be a bit of clarity when looking at what makes a great sandbox game. They have, since the days of Elite and Ultima, referred to open-world games filled with choice and diversions. But revisionist history would describe them as "games like Minecraft". For the purposes of this exploration of the best of the bunch, we're taking a look at them all. We support sandbox egalitarianism. So, from the mean streets of Los Santos through the ruthless missions of Agent 47 and the stunning expanse of Eve's universe, these are the very best sandbox games on PC.

Who is the Starfield United Colonies faction? While the release of Bethesda's upcoming epic space RPG is not far away at all, every grain of Starfield information we can gather is vital. From the various developer updates so far, it's become clear that learning about Starfield factions is essential. We know there are several main factions, as well as smaller groups, but for now, we'll focus on the United Colonies.

As a strong military and political force, the United Colonies is the most powerful of the Starfield factions. Their rich history spans intergalactic conflicts, common enemies, and the formation of a web of member colonies. In the faction guide below, we're taking a deep dive into who the United Colonies are, where you can find them, which Starfield companions came from this faction, how they fit into the Starfield timeline and lore, and how you can join them.      Best medieval games on PC 2023

Medieval games are less common than you might think. Rare is a videogame that doesn't feature at least one sword, suit of armour, or roast chicken. Still, they're usually mixed in with bearded hermits slinging magic fireballs, which we're reliably informed your average medieval peasant had very little knowledge of.

To that end, we've assembled a list of the best PC games that eschew all the prophecy and pyrotechnics for good old-fashioned steel-on-steel action. Medieval games come in all different shapes and sizes, with some opting for a more fantasy game style. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is, after all, no basis for a system of government. Similarly, a level ten Necromancer against a blacksmith wearing a potato sack is no basis for a fair fight.

Who are the Starfield voice actors? Bethesda may be returning to the age-old tradition of silent protagonists for Starfield, but that doesn't mean this highly anticipated game won't still feature a universe chock-full of colorful characters with voices to match.

Back in 2021, Todd Howard revealed that over 300 Starfield voice actors had been hired to deliver 150,000 lines of dialogue. However, the studio has been remarkably tight-lipped on exactly who we can expect to hear on the Starfield release date as we journey across the Settled Systems. Here's everything we know about the Starfield cast so far.

Does Starfield have new game plus?

Is new game plus in Starfield? Bethesda is not known for including new game plus modes in their games - Fallout 3 and 4 didn't feature one, and neither did Oblivion or Skyrim, but more games than ever are starting to incorporate new game plus as a way to increase replayability.

Not that you'll necessarily need it here, as there are over 1000 Starfield planets in the space opera, and when it comes to the Starfield length, just the main story will apparently run for 30-40 hours. Chuck in all the side content and exploration you can do and you're looking at hundreds of hours if you want to see anything - if, upon completion, you immediately want to start all over again with new game plus, then you are a more dedicated player than I. However, with that said, new game plus is definitely a mode that will pique my interest after a break, so here's all the information we have on Starfield new game plus.

     Is Starfield Steam Deck compatible?

Is Starfield Steam Deck compatible? Playing Starfield on your Steam Deck should unlock a universe of entertainment from your sofa, but we haven't got the official word from Valve on whether it's Steam Deck compatible. Although you should be able to get the RPG running on your handheld, the struggles of similar games to get decent performance suggests you probably won't be blasting off at light speed.

As stated in the Starfield system requirements, you'll need 125GB of storage space if you want to head out exploring new planets. There's over a hundred different solar systems on offer, so it's not exactly a surprise the game takes up so much space. This year's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will make use of Modulate's ToxMod AI to help moderate voice chat in multiplayer, Activision have revealed. The system won't detect offences in real time, nor will it be able to kick you from games for effing and blinding. It just submits reports of bad behaviour, with Activision staff making the final call on enforcement actions, which might involve reviewing recordings to work out the context of an outburst.

You can turn off voice chat in Call of Duty to avoid being recorded, but it doesn't look like there's a way to opt out of AI voice moderation in the current/new Call of Duty games at the time of writing. The tech is being beta-tested from today, 30th August in Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone in North America, with the English-language worldwide release to land alongside Modern Warfare 3 on 10th November.

AMD will finally plug a yawning great hole in the middle of their RDNA 3 graphics card lineup, with both the Radeon RX 7700 XT and Radeon RX 7800 XT set to launch in September. Intended as RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070 botherers, you can expect these GPUs to put in a shift at high-quality 1440p, with a view towards FSR 3 making up for their lack of Nvidia DLSS 3 support.

Appropriately for third-person shooters featuring icky electric zombies, Invader's Daymare series has crept up on me. The second game, Daymare: 1994 Sandcastle, launches today. It casts you as Dalila Reyes, a special agent of Hexacore Advanced Division for Extraction and Search, aka H.A.D.E.S., and - wait a minute, I know this vibe! That annoying acronym? The washed-out, cadaver-on-concrete set dressing? The gimmicky ice-gun and scanner mode puzzles? The not-so-subtle undertones of Monolith and Midway? Characters with big glowy gadgets on their backs, so you can track them through poorly-lit warehouses?

For all the 90s setting, this looks to me like a homage to shooters of the early/mid noughties, when every action game took place in an office block, prison or garage, featured some kind of paranormal auxiliary ability, and owed a few cinematic chromosomes to the Matrix. Get a load of that trailer.

Where Winds Meet struck me as hugely ambitious action adventure romp set in vast, Ten Kingdom-inspired China. And it was hilariously impossible to summarise in the space of a short, sharp 30-minute appointment. While the elevator pitch started off fairly naturally, there came a point where the elevator rocketed up into the atmosphere and spiralled out of control. I won't pretend to completely understand what the exact measure of the game is, but I'm both excited to see more and a tad worried it could end up being a disjointed, overstretched mash of things that don't form a cohesive whole.

The new Zippo game lighter is based on Final Fantasy XIV and will be available at the Isetan event in Shinjuku.

The lineup of Final Fantasy XIV x Isetan collaboration merchandise was recently revealed on the MOO:D MARK by ISETAN website. One of these products is a Final Fantasy XIV themed lighter by Zippo. This latest Zippo game lighter will cost 10,890 yen ($74.65). It can be purchased at the special event, "A Decade's Journey," in Japan, as well as online via the Isetan Mitsukoshi Online Store and the MOO:D MARK site once the event begins on September 28, 2023.

During the initial announcement, Zippo was one of the 27 brands confirmed to participate in this store-wide event. The lighter has a quote from Haurchefant Greystone engraved on it. It reads "Until then, my friend!"

It isn't uncommon for Zippo to release lighters with a design based on a game. It's done it quite often for the Resident Evil series. One had the Hound Wolf Squad logo. Another few involved STARS and Umbrella logos.

The Zippo Final Fantasy XIV collaboration model lighter will be available for purchase at the Isetan Shinjuku Store during the Final Fantasy XIV x Isetan collaboration event in Japan beginning on September 28, 2023. This event is scheduled to run until October 2, 2023, at the Isetan Shinjuku Store Main Building 6th Floor Exhibition Hall. Final Fantasy XIV is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

symphony of war legends dlc dancing dragon games the nephilim saga screenshot

When we reviewed Symphony of War in 2022, we came away from the game appreciating its virtues as a tactical sandbox. It's not the most tightly balanced strategy experience, but there are lots of things to try and units to collect. The Symphony of War Legends DLC adds to this sandbox appeal. There are extra maps! There are new units! And did you want some goodies to collect and equip? It's got those too.

The new Symphony of War Legends stuff is very much paired with the main campaign, unlocking map by map as you progress through the main chapters. There's some flashback stories for some of the game's side characters, like Ragavi or Beatrix. You'll also find a few thoughtful map designs, challenging you to push to particular objectives or split your forces. Compared to the existing stages, these are definitely more gameplay-first. The game's developer, Dancing Dragon Games, spent more time making maps look like maps in those! These, though? What if you're defending a square area from all sides? Or you're navigating a labyrinthine teleporter puzzle? They can be interesting to fight, to be clear, but they aren't here for the world-building.

You can also use a new earnable currency, Memory Fragments, to essentially buy back units from previous campaigns. This includes copies of story characters, too — now with accompanying question mark appended to their names to indicate their dubious place in canon — though these units are significantly more expensive than generic counterparts. We get why these might cost a bit more, but as it is? Sure, you'll pass on a copy of your protagonist, but you can snag a six-pack of powerful dragon riders with those funds and that'll break the game way more.

[caption id="attachment_980682" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Symphony of War Legends DLC review Image via Dancing Dragon Games[/caption]

Does the base game adjust to the added experience or extra fighters? No, it does not. Included in the New Game+ options is a wealth of ways to adjust the difficulty how you'd like. This is nice, we guess? You can scale up elements to be much harder to overcome. We'd definitely have appreciated a defined, standardized challenge mode that balances with the new stuff in mind, though. As it is, we played a fresh campaign with just the base resources and quickly steamrolled these "challenge maps" as soon as they unlocked.

As with the base game, the new Symphony of War: Legends content has a serious disconnect between story and gameplay. Dancing Dragon clearly cares about the lore of the world, and wants you to care too! But the mechanics don't align. The result? You'll click through (or skip) some long elements of backstory, then play a map set in the past that somehow also has all of your current-day armies to use.

With so many options in the original release's sandbox, it can be a bit of a challenge to add even more units to the mix. And it isn't particularly game-changing to have? There's a necromancy mechanic you can use now, wielding stacks of skeletons that grow when they kill foes instead of individual units that level up. And big battle cats! They're fun too, competing with dragons as two-tile selections with a lot of health and strength. The appeal of new classes is expanding the wealth of battle options, but Symphony of War might have already had too many. That means there aren't many more facets of combat to explore with added mechanics.

[caption id="attachment_980681" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]the nephilim saga expansion character statistics freedom games Image via Dancing Dragon Games[/caption]

The Symphony of War: Legends DLC doesn't really patch up any of the title's weaknesses, which is a shame. Then again, it doesn't try to? It feels more like a board game expansion: "here are some more ideas we had, shuffle 'em in." Playing with these new pieces in the campaign can be fun, but it would have been way more compelling if the extra maps were instead a standalone campaign with more of a focus on the new units and really any attempt at all to balance the difficulty.

Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga is available now on PC. For more information on the base game, check out our review. The Symphony of War Legends DLC launched on August 28, 2023. Developer Dancing Dragon Games and publisher Freedom Games have expressed interest in porting the game to consoles, but there's no news on that yet.

A new One Piece Portrait of Pirates figure of Nefertari Vivi, princess of Arabasta, is coming soon. The figure costs ¥19,800 yen (or about $135) and is scheduled to release in Japan on January 2024. The exact worldwide release window wasn't noted yet. The new Portrait of Pirates figure of Vivi is now available for pre-order from the Premium Bandai online store.

We should see this figure release worldwide, as MegaHouse figures tend to be released outside of Japan. The new Vivi figure stands at approximately 215 mm (or 8.5 inches) tall. The figure also comes with a dedicated base to support it.

You can check out the new Portrait of Pirates figure of Vivi in more detail in the gallery below.

How Does the Honkai: Star Rail Come With Me, Take the Journey Event Work?

HoYoVerse kicked off a Honkai: Star Rail Come With Me, Take the Journey event designed to encourage people to invite players who dropped the game to return. There's no actual gameplay involved, since it just involves inviting people and then completing in-game tasks. However, there are rewards like Stellar Jades and Credits involved.

To start, the goal is to get up to three people to come back to the game. You get an invite code, and you can earn 130 Stellar Jades for sharing it once and getting one person. The second and third possible returning players only net you 100 Stellar Jades each. You can get a total of 330 Stellar Jades from this part. However, those people only qualify if they're over Trailblaze Level 10, activated Starlit Homecoming 40 or more days ago, haven't logged in for over two weeks, and they beat the Jarilo VI mission "Long Wait for the Blade's Edge."

If you manage to clear that first plateau, then the second part opens up. This only nets you rewards if the people you invited play the game. If they each login every day for four days, consume 720 Trailblaze Power, and complete Simulated Universe once, then you get 50 Stellar Jades every time one of them completes all three tasks. There are also rewards for them hitting those other achievements. For example, you get credits based on their accrued logins, Adventure Logs and Standard Supplies Material Boxes if they use Trailblaze Power, and a Standard Supplies Material Box and Lost Gold Fragments if they go through a full Simulated Universe world run.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PC and mobile devices. A PS5 version will launch in 2023. The 1.3 update is live now. The Honkai: Star Rail Come With Me, Take the Journey event runs until October 11, 2023.

Imagine Dragons Made a Starfield Song

Microsoft and Bethesda announced Imagine Dragons created a song for Starfield. It is called, appropriately enough, "Children of the Sky (a Starfield song)." There's also already a music video for it, which features footage from the game. People can find it on multiple services as well, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, and Spotify. It wasn't noted if it will be on the soundtrack included with the Premium and Constellation editions of the game.

Here's the full Imagine Dragons "Children of the Sky (a Starfield Song)" music video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv1a-OrikdM&ab_channel=BethesdaSoftworks

There's also an official lyric video for the new song that appeared on the Imagine Dragons YouTube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvlaxcjtV9U&ab_channel=ImagineDragons

This isn't the only recent case of a mainstream artist recording one of the theme songs for a new release. Diablo IV featured a song from Halsey and BTS' Suga. "Lilith" released alongside the game.

It is also a part of a continuing campaign to advertise the game. Microsoft and Bethesda also sent the influencers Astro Alexandra, Filspixel, LilyPichu, and Myth to Space Camp and recorded the affair to promote the game.

Starfield will come to the Xbox Series X and PC on September 6, 2023. Early access begins on September 1, 2023.

Splatoon 3 Shipshape Cargo

Nintendo revealed details about another new Splatoon 3 stage, Shipshape Cargo Co. This new stage will be added to the stage rotation as part of the Drizzle Season 2023 update, which will be released on September 1, 2023.

Shipshape Cargo Co will be set on a gigantic Arctic cargo ship. The stage itself is situated between shipping containers as the ship sails through the frozen seas. The stage will feature a number of elevated areas accessible by ramps that run along the side of the stage. It's the second stage set on a ship to be added to the Splatoon series, after the cruise ship stage Manta Maria. However, that ship was static in both Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3.

Shipshape Cargo Co will be added to the Splatoon 3 Drizzle Season 2023 alongside another new stage, Crableg Capital, which takes place on top of a skyscraper.

https://twitter.com/SplatoonNA/status/1696870529238519826

In addition to the new stage details, Nintendo also revealed that Drizzle Season 2023 will add a huge number of additional customisation items. Over 300 new decorations and stickers for player lockers will be added. Some of these have been confirmed to be part of the new season Catalog, while other items will be unlocked via the Shell-Out Machine in the lobby.

Splatoon 3 is out now for Nintendo Switch. Drizzle Season 2023 arrives with new stages on September 1, 2023.

Square Enix PAX West

Square Enix confirmed that it will be bringing a selection of games to PAX West. Taking place in the Seattle Convention Center from September 1, 2023 to September 4, 2023, PAX West will feature a Square Enix booth full of playable games. In addition, the company will be hosting two panels during the weekend.

Here's a full rundown of every Square Enix game PAX West 2023 attendees can expect to find.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, the mobile remake of the Final Fantasy VII timeline, will be playable on the show floor ahead of its release on September 7, 2023. Square Enix have not revealed which portions of the game will be playable, but it's likely that they will feature some of the new young Sephiroth storyline.

Square Enix will also be holding a raffle during the show. Anyone who pre-registers the game at the booth can win an Ever Crisis t-shirt.

Final Fantasy XVI

While Final Fantasy XVI will not be playable on the show floor, Square Enix will be hosting a panel on September 2, 2023. Localization Director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox will be chatting with voice actors Ben Starr, Jonathan Case, Stewart Clarke and Nina Yndis about their work on the game.

The panel will be taking place in the Main Theater, but it will also be streamed live on the PAX1 Twitch channel.

Star Ocean The Second Story R

A remake of the second Star Ocean game, using the HD-2D visual style used by Octopath Traveler and the Live a Live remake. It's unknown if the PAX demo will focus on the Claude or Rena route, or if a choice will be made available. This demo appears to be giving players a chance to try out the remade combat system.

Infinity Strash: Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai

This adaptation of the Adventure of Dai anime will be playable on the show floor a few weeks ahead of its launch on September 28, 2023. The game offers two modes of play – Story Mode is a standard campaign following the story of the anime, while Temple of Recollection is a roguelike dungeon crawler. Hopefully each of these will get featured in the show demo.

Foamstars

PAX West will be home to the first consumer hands-on demonstration of Foamstars, with visitors to the booth playing against each other. This multiplayer title for PlayStation systems features two teams of four battling it out using foam-based weapons. It's drawn a lot of comparison to Nintendo's Splatoon franchise, so this will be the ideal time to see how those comparisons hold up.

Little Goody Two Shoes

The first of two games on the show floor from Square Enix Collective, the company's indie support arm. Little Goody Two Shoes is a homage to RPGs from the PS1 and PS2 eras, with a horror-tinged atmosphere. Gameplay will be split between a life sim during the day and a dark adventure through the woods at night.

PowerWash Simulator

The second Square Enix Collective game, PowerWash Simulator will be on the show floor. Developers FuturLab will be showcasing new content that is set to be added to the game. Square Enix will also be hosting a panel on September 1, 2023 focused on the game. Staff from the game's Marketing and Community teams will be sharing stories of the game's inception and how it came to be a success. This panel will be held in the Bluejay Theater and streamed live on the PAX2 Twitch channel.

PAX West will be held on September 1-4, 2023.

PlayStation Plus Will Cost More as Price Rises in September

Sony decided to raise the price of all PlayStation Plus membership tiers, and all three will cost more starting in September 2023. Starting on September 6, 2023, it will cost at least $20 more for someone to subscribe. This will be a worldwide change in prices. It will be $79.99/€71.99/£59.99/¥6,800 per year for the lowest Essential tier going forward. Its excuse for charging more is to "continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits."

The base PlayStation Plus Essential tier is going up to $79.99 from $59.99 for a year. The PlayStation Plus Extra tier will cost $139.99 for 12 months. It used to be $99.99. Finally, the PlayStation Plus Premium price will be $159.99 after the change, compared to $119.99 now.

The company also noted that the yearly plans will still be cheaper than buying one or three months of PlayStation Plus at a time. However, it didn't say what the new prices for each tier will be going forward. Before September 6, 2023, it is $9.99 per month and $24.99 per three months for Essential, $14.99 per month and $39.99 per three months for Extra, and $17.99 per month and $49.99 per three months for Premium.

The cost of the three PlayStation Plus plans will increase in price starting on September 6, 2023 worldwide.

Netflix just shared the final One Piece live-action trailer the day before its debut. This is a more far-reaching video. It offers a larger look at not only the main cast, but supporting characters. A number of different locations also showed up.

Here's the newest video. It focuses more on the quest for the fabled One Piece and the Straw Hat's goal to find it. As it does discuss this, we see members of the Navy and other rivals and antagonists that the crew will encounter throughout the story.

While this is the final One Piece live-action trailer, Netflix released another one not too long ago. Back on August 24, 2023, a Japanese dub video appeared. It features the original Japanese voice actors from the anime. However, as it was shared by the Netflix Japan account, there are no English subtitles.

There was also recently a Netflix video that involved actors from the show talking about the adaptation. Also, episode 1,074 of the anime ended up delayed due to this version's debut.

The first season of the One Piece live-action adaptation airs on Netflix starting on August 31, 2023. The anime is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix. Viz Media is handling the localization of the manga volumes.

Starfield ReviewEmil Pagliarulo, the lead designer of Bethesda's upcoming mega-RPG Starfield, recently revealed that the developers had a Jesuit priest-in-training advise them when creating the game's religions. Shane Liesegang, the up-and-coming priest in question, actually served as a former writer for Bethesda who specifically worked on both Skyrim and Fallout 4. That former connection combined with Liesegang's studies helped the team at Bethesda make one of Starfield's original religions as authentic and believable as possible. Pagliarulo shared this aspect of Starfield's development in a recently published interview with Polygon editor Owen Good. In it, he delved a little bit into the two religions that Bethesda crafted for Starfield, which exist in the game's universe alongside the religions we have in the real world. One of these religions, dubbed the Enlightened, functions as a sort of atheist or humanist church, whereas the other one, the Sanctum Uni...
