PS5 Pre-Order Registration Page is Now Available

ps5

The PlayStation 5 isn't available to pre-order just yet but Sony has opened up a registration page for the same recently. The company noted that there will be a "limited quantity" of PS5 consoles available for pre-order "so we will be inviting some of our existing consumers to be one of the first to pre-order one from PlayStation." However, these are on a "first-come-first-serve basis" so you'll still need to pre-order quickly once the invite comes through via email.

Sony also revealed a few additional details in its adjoining FAQ. Essentially, this isn't a guarantee for pre-ordering the PS5. Quantities are limited to one console, either the regular or Digital Edition, per PSN ID. Accessories-wise, one can pick up two DualSense wireless controllers and charging stations, two Pulse 3D wireless headsets, two media remotes and two HD cameras.

With this registration page going live, it could only be a matter of time before Sony formally announces pre-orders being available. This may coincide with the announcement of a release date and price. Until then, the PS5 is still slated to release this holiday season. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PS5, Xbox Series X Runs at 4K, 120 Hz

call of duty black ops cold war

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has been officially revealed, taking place during the early 1980s and offering more player choice in its campaign. While there are no doubt some feathers ruffled about the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions costing $69.99, they will feature a number of enhancements. As VentureBeat reports, the next-gen versions will run at 4K resolution and support 120 Hz refresh rates.

Treyarch co-head Dan Bunting said that, "We want to make sure that the framerate is responsive, and that it feels like there's nothing on the technical side preventing you from having a good time." No loading screens and seamless transitions between gameplay and cutscenes thanks to the consoles' solid state drives are also being touted. Real-time ray tracing is also being employed in the global illumination system, which results in visuals like bouncing rays of light, more accurate shadows and so on.

Raven Software vehicle artist Katie Sabin said that, "With the power of the next-gen systems, we'll be able to add even more detail and put even more love into everything we create." If that weren't enough, lighting director Alberto Noti says that images of assets from the 1980s have been used for more realism, which are being displayed with the help of 4K and HDR.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is out on November 13th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC with the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions arriving later. Multiplayer will be revealed on September 9th so stay tuned for more details.

Gotham Knights Combat Has Range Of Combo Options, Will Be "Comfortable" For Modern Third Person Action Fans

gotham knights

After years (and years) of teasing, we finally got the unveiling of WB Games Montreal's Batman game. While the fact that the game was not Arkham branded had leaked quite some time ago, it was still a little surprising. Ultimately, it seems as if the Arkham brand is going to be taking a bit of a nap for awhile (even though Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game is set in the same universe, technically) in favor of Gotham Knights. The game will see you take the role of 1 of 4 Batman allies as they must tackle a new and dangerous Gotham without Batman. But will it feel familiar to the beloved Arkham games? Well, it seems like that's a maybe, but they have gone in a slightly different direction.

In an interview with IGN, Creative Director Patrick Redding was asked if the game played like the Arkham titles. He didn't quite give a definite yes or no, but said those familiar with the beat'em style would find it familiar, but it would also be comfortable for those more familiar with the third person action games of today, with lots of combo options for both melee and ranged attacks.

"We have gone through and iterated on control schemes quite a bit over the course of the whole project, but it'll be comfortable to people who are familiar with third-person brawler type experiences.

"The way you're accessing some of your special moves and things like that can vary I'm sure, but in terms of having both attack and defensive choices, having a range of combo choices, having variations in strike types and attack types, being able to combo in your ranged attacks as well as your melee attacks – all of that is there, and I think will be comfortable for people who have played modern, contemporary third-person action-adventure style brawlers."

It's hard to parse there, but we already know that Gotham Knights will differ from the Arkham titles due to the level systems, and it sounds like this will be a little different than the free flowing combat Arkham was known for. We did get a look at the gameplay, and it does seem more of its own thing. A new day for some new knights.

Gotham Knights is set to launch in 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One and PC. The game is also said not to be designed as a live service game, which you can read more about through here.

Chorus Will See Gameplay Debut At Gamescom Opening Night Live

chorus

It was earlier in the year when we got our first look at Chorus. The game will be a crossgen title space combat title with a unique name and look. While coming to both current and new generation systems, developer Fishlabs are definitely pushing the next generation versions as the most definitive with reduced loading for its open world elements. And we'll be getting a look at it soon.

As announced on his official Twitter, host Geoff Keighley revealed that the game's global gameplay debut will be at Gamescom Opening Night Live. It's referred to as the "next gen space combat shooter," so it's likely that the footage shown will be from next generation consoles. We'll finally get to see the game in action, and we get what looks to be a very small tease of it below.

Chorus is set to release in 2021 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC and Stadia. Gamescom Opening Night Live will occur tomorrow, August 27th.

PS5 Will Have WiFi 6 And Bluetooth 5.1

ps5

It can be hard to believe sometimes since we still lack some basic and important information, but we are, in fact, a few months away from the launch of a new generation of consoles. Both Microsoft and Sony are going headfirst into the holidays, and there's all kinds of stuff to get excited for: the SSDs, the resolution and ray-tracing abilities and for the PS5 specifically there's also the much talked about DualSense and its haptic feedback. But there's actually more subtle things under the hood to get excited about, too, such as some quality of life improvements.

Brazilian site Tecnoblog unearthed the PS5's wireless specifications, which you can see below. There are two very big upgrades here. The first is that the system will have the most up-to-date to date WiFi version, which is WiFi 6. It offers a maximum download speed of 9.6gbps. To compare, the original PS4's maximum speed was 300mbps, while the fifth generation PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro chips were a maximum of 3.5gbps. That's, of course, maximum download based on theoretical circumstances, but in general, it should still boost the speeds by some degree.

The other thing is Bluetooth. The PS5 will be almost entirely up-to-date with Bluetooth 5.1 (5.2 just came out, so they missed the most recent version by just a tad). The original PS4 shipped with only version 2.1 and the PS4 Pro had Bluetooth 4.0. Hopefully, that will lead to more Bluetooth devices being compatible with the system than ever before.

You can see the full spec sheet below.

The Initiative's Game "Isn't Really Perfect Dark" But Takes Elements From It – Rumour

the initiative

Earlier today, we got an alleged hint at what the new studio from Microsoft, The Initiative, is working on. If this rumor is to be believed, the studio is working on reviving one of Rare's IP with Perfect Dark. It seems, though, that the game may not be all that familiar to fans if further elaboration on said rumor is also true.

VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb, who was the originator of the above mentioned rumor, took to his official Twitter to clarify some things. Earlier he had said the game may not be exactly Perfect Dark, it could instead just be something set in that universe. He has elaborated on that more by saying the game in question is not actually a Perfect Dark game at all, and will only borrow elements from that series. He likened it to Apex Legends and its relation to Titanfall.

If you are unfamiliar, Apex Legends technically takes place in the same universe as Respawn's Titanfall franchise. But ultimately, there's little plot relation between the two, and it's more of a relationship of Apex Legends borrowing things from Titanfall here and there. The games are also radically different, so unless you knew the deeper lore and nuances of Titanfall, you'd never even know they were related.

So, whatever this game is may not even resemble Perfect Dark. In fact, it seems as if it may not even be set in the same canon as those games. It could just be taking smaller elements from it here and there. The Initiative has been hiring some top talent, so whatever it is, the game will have a lot to live up to, but odds are we also won't see if for a couple of years yet, either. We will just have to see how it all pans out.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time Confirmed for Gamescom Opening Night Live

crash bandicoot 4 it's about time

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is not far from launch, and over the last few weeks, we've seen quite a bit of gameplay footage of the upcoming platformer. Soon, we will be seeing more.

Geoff Keighley recently took to Twitter to confirm that there will be "a new world premiere" for Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time at Gamescom Opening Night Live tomorrow. What that entails remains to be seen, but new gameplay footage seems like a pretty safe bet.

Gamescom Opening Night Live is certainly looking like it's going to be a packed show. It will be over 2 hours long and feature 38 games. New gameplay for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart will be shown off, while we will be getting updates on the likes of Little Nightmares 2, Destiny 2, and Mafia: Definitive Edition as well. Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will also be at the show, while we can also expect the reveal of Fall Guys: Season 2

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time will launch for PS4 and Xbox One on October 2, though recent leaks have suggested that a Switch version could be in the works as well.

Fall Guys is the Most Downloaded PS Plus Game of All Time, Sells Over 7 Million Copies on Steam

fall guys

Mediatonic's weird but lovable multiplayer game Fall Guys launched earlier this month for PS4 and PC, and immediately saw rapturous success, amassing over 8 million players on PS4 and selling over 2 million copies on Steam in a matter of days. It seems its momentum isn't slowing down, with the game crossing more significant milestones on both platforms.

Publisher Devolved Digital recently took to Twitter to confirm that Fall Guys has now sold over 7 million copies on Steam. On top of that, it has also become the most downloaded PlayStation Plus game of all time. Both of those are incredible achievements, especially given the short window from launch the game has managed them in.

Fall Guys is currently available on PS4 and PC, but the developers have expressed interesting in launching it for other platforms as well. You can read our review of the game through here.

It has also been confirmed that Season 2 of Fall Guys will be unveiled at Gamescom Opening Night Live tomorrow.

Gotham Knights is a Self-Contained Story, Not a Live Service Game, Says Developer

gotham knights

With Gotham Knights being a full-fledged action-RPG that is also placing quite a bit of emphasis on co-op gameplay, it seems all the elements are in place for it to become yet another live service title. But developers WB Games Montreal have assured that that is not going to be the case.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, senior producer Fleur Marty said that Gotham Knights is being specifically designed to not be a live service title.

"This is very much not designed as a game-as-service," she said. "There is an ability tree, which is different for each of the characters, and then there's gear that you craft – and so choices that you're going to be making – but that does not mean that this is a game-as-service."

When asked if this means Gotham Knights is going to be a single, self-contained story, she said, "Yes, absolutely." Marty further added that the entire game is playable solo, and solo players can play it offline. She added that single player gameplay won't lock players out of anything in the game.

"You can also completely experience in solo if you want to, you're not going to miss out on anything," she said. "If you're playing single player, you can be offline if you want to. We think that teaming up and living that dynamic duo fantasy can be also a really great experience for players, but we won't force it on them."

Gotham Knights will release in 2021 for PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In this same interview, the game's creative director also said that the game wouldn't have any level gating. Read more on that through here.

Gotham Knights Won't Have Any Level Gating, Creative Director Says

gotham knights

Gotham Knights was recently revealed, with WB Games Montreal finally pulling back the curtain on their mysterious new game- which they had teased to death over the past couple of years. During its reveal, quite a few gameplay details were revealed, and one in particular was met with some healthy skepticism by audiences.

Gotham Knights is being billed as a full-fledged action-RPG, complete with extensive progression, levels, damage numbers, and what have you. That is a space that tends to go hand-in-hand with things such as bloat and artificial gating in the AAA space- so is that something players will have to watch out for in Gotham Knights as well? Not according to creative director Patrick Redding.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Redding confirmed that the entire open world of Gotham Knights will be accessible to players right from the get go, and that there will be no level-gating to block off any content or areas.

"It is one open world city, right from the start," Redding said. "And no, there's no level gating whatsoever."

So what exactly is the purpose of having enemy and player levels? According to Redding, the levels are more about representing a range of challenge across a variety of activities and enemies in the open world, though he assures that it will never be a case of players running into high level enemies or quests and being forced to grind before getting to a level where they can take on those activities.

"It's true that, as you are getting more powerful in your progression, you're gonna see a sliding scale in terms of not just the level of the enemies, but even some of the types of enemies that you're going to be coming up against," Redding said. "But it's not a grind, it's not a situation where you'll say, 'Oh, God, I have to go grind this type of mission in order to level up to this, and then I can get this.'"

"It's really that, when you encounter open-world crime activities (and other activities that involve the AI), you're going to see a range, right?" he continued. "You might see guys that are a little bit weaker than you, and guys that are a little bit stronger than you. And how you approach each of those situations, it presents you with some choices that you're going to have to make. Like, 'Is this a situation where I'm going to maybe swap out a piece of equipment, because I think I'm going to handle it better that way.? Do I want to take a more stealthy approach?' All of those are options that are available to the player and, and the level of your enemy is just one factor in deciding that."

Gotham Knights is due out some time in 2021 for the PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. For everything else you need to know about the game, head on over here.

PS5 Pre-Order Registration Page Appears on PlayStation Website

Well, the time has finally come to sign-up for PS5 pre-orders. Uhh, sort of.

Sony made some changes to the official PlayStation 5 section of its website recently that now allows users to register for the option to pre-order the next-gen console when it becomes available. The site doesn't indicate when the PS5 itself will become purchasable in this manner, but hey, at least its some sort of progress.

Those who want to sign-up to pre-order the PS5 will then be randomly selected to buy one directly from Sony when the raffle happens. Invitations themselves aren't a guarantee that you'll then be able to snag a PS5, so be sure to keep checking your email if you do register.  As for the registration process itself, Sony only asks for your current PlayStation Online ID. Once you punch it in, you should be good to go.

The whole roll-out of pre-orders for the PS5 and Xbox Series X have been downright odd, to say the least. We're nearly into September and we still don't have firm prices or release dates for either next-gen platform. Still, if Sony is beginning to make moves like this on their own website, you'd imagine we'll start hearing more very soon.

Until then, all we know is that Sony still intends to release the PS5 at an undetermined date this holiday season.

Grounded Update Gives Players Perks and a New Feathery "Friend"

Grounded

When Obsidian's Grounded hit Early Access in late July, it was immediately met with tons of players. While the game still has a ways to go in terms of content, that's a good sign that the team has hit on a great IP. And now, the team is releasing its first major content update. It comes complete with tons of new additions and a terrifying new enemy. Give the update trailer a watch below to see some of the stuff Obsidian's adding.

While the bird is literally the biggest thing coming to the update, the most interesting aspect for the game might be the new perk system. Basically, this is a new way for players to differentiate themselves from their friends. There are currently 13 perks and you can equip up to three at once. It will be fun to see all the wacky ones the team can come up with over the course of the early access campaign.

There is also a new slew of items for you to craft and some improvements to placing items. Plus, BURG.L has some brand new quests for you to take on. And, of course, there are a host of bug fixes and changes. That includes a buff to spiders, so be prepared.

Grounded brings such a unique premise to the table. I'm very hopeful that Obsidian adds tons of content to really fill the whole thing out before it fully launches. This is a great first step and I can't wait to see what they have next.

Grounded is available now in early access on PC and Xbox One. The game is set to launch sometime in 2021.

Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War Releases in November, Cross-Gen Version Retails for $70

As promised, Activision today lifted the veil on all things Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, with all of the major details of the project now being unveiled.

Prior to the game's full reveal in Call of Duty: Warzone, images and key pieces of information for the shooter leaked via digital storefronts. As the rumors we had heard suggested, Black Ops: Cold War is a direct sequel chronologically to the original Call of Duty: Black Ops. Characters like Frank Woods and Alex Mason make their return with the game taking place during the early 1980s. Accompanying modes such as multiplayer and Zombies will be coming back, too.

Here's a full description of the game as a whole:

The iconic Black Ops series is back with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War – the direct sequel to the original and fan-favorite Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Black Ops Cold War will drop fans into the depths of the Cold War's volatile geopolitical battle of the early 1980s. Nothing is ever as it seems in a gripping single-player Campaign, where players will come face-to-face with historical figures and hard truths, as they battle around the globe through iconic locales like East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, Soviet KGB headquarters and more.

As elite operatives, you will follow the trail of a shadowy figure named Perseus who is on a mission to destabilize the global balance of power and change the course of history. Descend into the dark center of this global conspiracy alongside iconic characters Woods, Mason and Hudson, and a new cast of operatives attempting to stop a plot decades in the making.

Beyond the Campaign, players will bring a Cold War arsenal of weapons and equipment into the next generation of Multiplayer and Zombies experiences.

Perhaps most importantly, Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War is also confirmed to launch on November 13 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It will then seemingly launch in tandem with both next-gen consoles in the PS5 and Xbox Series X, depending on when both platforms release.

Speaking of each next-gen console, Activision will also be going down a bit of a different route when it comes to upgrading current-gen versions of Black Ops: Cold War to those on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Rather than doing a free upgrade, purchasers will have the chance to spend $69.99 on a cross-gen version of the title. This will give you access to the game on your current-gen platform of choice, with an upgrade to the accompanying next-gen console being possible later on. While players are being asked to spend more money up front, it is better than some other systems that competing publishers have come up with.

We're set to see a whole lot more of Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War beginning tomorrow at Gamescom Opening Night Live, so stay tuned. Until then, you can check out some of the first screenshots from the upcoming shooter down below.

The Last Campfire From Hello Games Launches Tomorrow

The Last Campfire, Hello Games

While most know developer Hello Games from their work on No Man's Sky, the team has also been quietly working on a new game for the last few years. The Last Campfire was first revealed back at The Game Awards back in 2018. It's a completely new direction for the studio. The Last Campfire is an adventure game focused on exploration and puzzles. Hello Game's own Sean Murray helped explain the game via a new narrated trailer. Give it a watch below.

Before today, The Last Campfire simply had a release window of "summer." It's a bit surprising that they'd just shadow drop the date the day before Gamescom Opening Night Live. However, there's also something to be said for getting an announcement out on its own.

Either way, this is a great surprise. I'm a big fan of exploration and puzzle games, so Hello Games' latest is right up my alley. The game also has a great look about it. In the PlayStation Blog post that went up this morning, there's a shot of the game's hero exploring through a valley. It's absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully, the entire game continually brings that same style.

In the video above, Murray also talks quite a bit about the characters you'll meet along the way. When I first saw the game nearly two years ago, I wasn't too interested in the story. However, seeing that turtle made me instantly want to know his backstory.

The Last Campfire launches on August 27 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

LEGO Star Wars : The Skywalker Saga Get Gameplay at Gamescom

Lego Star Wars

Over the last few days, video game presenter extraordinaire Geoff Keighley has slowly been teasing some of the games coming to Gamescom Opening Night Live on Thursday. The main man himself took to Twitter today to reveal that tomorrow we'll be getting our first look at gameplay in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. With the game potentially coming out in October, it's about time we see it in action.

Of course, this being a LEGO Star Wars game, you probably know what to expect. The franchise has kind of hit on a perfect formula for its audience and only makes incremental changes from one game to another. That said, in terms of content, this game is packed with stuff to do.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga takes players through all nine movies in the main Star Wars arc. During the journey, players will meet "nearly 500" of their favorite universe characters. The roster includes everyone from Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to everyone's favorite spice runner Zorii Bliss.

Unlike with most LEGO games, players don't have to take on a linear story. Instead, they can choose to tackle any of the nine movies in whichever order. There's also a slate of hub worlds to explore that move players from mission to mission.

As someone who lives with a person who's done everything there is to do in every LEGO game released, The Skywalker Saga is a bit terrifying. On paper, there's so much packed in that I might never see my PS4 again.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga drops later this year on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Be sure to check back tomorrow to see all of the news out of Gamescom Opening Night Live.

The popular fighting game first launched back in 2016 and has since continued to be supported by Capcom. The fifth season of SFV was just detailed a few weeks back and is set to see a number of new characters joining the roster in the coming months.

The second game available in the month is that of the ever-popular battle royale title PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Hajimari no Kiseki Release Stream: Development Stories From Toshihiro Kondo

Hajimari no Kiseki release stream

Nihon Falcom and Clouded Leopard Entertainment held a special live stream on August 26, celebrating the release of The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki on PS4.The stream featured Clouded Leopard Entertainment President Chen Yun Yun, Falcom Presdent Toshihiro Kondo; Two seiyuu were present as guests, Shinnosuke Tachibana (Jusis Albarea) and Masumi Asano (Noel Seeker). We heard some developments stories on Hajimari and got to see some gameplay. We've got a summary below.

The stream started with Toshihiro Kondo chatting about the game's development. He jokingly mentioned how everyone at Falcom immediately regretted it when they started making Hajimari, realizing they're making a way too big game. Kondo explained the younger developers at Falcom greatly contributed to making everything go well.

Chen Yun Yun explained how she always wanted to bring more Falcom games to Asia in the past, with simultaneous releases with Japan, but it wasn't easy for multiple reasons. Mainly how Falcom works on its games until the last second before making them go gold. This means outside companies localizing the games tend to get them pretty late. This is one of the things which made localizing the games pretty difficult in her previous company, who couldn't handle that. That's why she decided to make her own company, Clouded Leopard Entertainment.

Coming next up, they quickly reexplained how Hajimari no Kiseki works. Most notably the Shin Mugen Kairou / True Corridor of Reveries and how it's a randomly generated dungeon, independent from the main game, and where you unlock and play the mini games. Unlocking them works like a gacha. You get special stones by defeating strong enemies, and use these stone to randomly get Characters Episodes and Mini games as rewards. Certain stones can also unlock special characters that aren't playable in the main game.

The True Corridor of Reveries lets you use any character, as long as you unlock them, so you can make party combinations that are impossible in the main game. You can also use the True Corridor of Reveries to train your characters as they'll retain everything gained there in the main story.

Toshihiro Kondo and Chen Yun Yun also commented on some of the mini games in Hajimari. They mentioned the quiz game Kiseki de Pon is really difficult and is made for Kiseki Series otaku to fight each other on their knowledge of the series.

Beach de Vacances was also explained. Kondo mentioned how in Trails of Cold Steel, Rean could end up paired with one of the girls.  In this mini game, you control Rean and you'll be able to play at the beach with these girls, with games like watermelon splitting. At first, it'll only be the girls from Sen no Kiseki and with Rean. But later on DLC will add Zero and Ao no Kiseki girls and we'll play as Lloyd instead.

Hajimari no Kiseki release stream Magical Alisa RS script

Next up they explained the Magical Alisa RS game. They made this one because the Mahou Shoujo DLC costumes in the past game were really popular and many fans wanted to see them again. Moreover,  Magical Alisa RS has an actual storyline, linked with the Magical Alisa novel they published in the Falcom magazine. The RS in Magical Alisa RS means Return Shooting. Toshihiro Kondo also explained you need to progress in the True Corridor of Reveries to unlock more stages of Magical Alisa RS.

Next up, we saw the early part of Hajimari, the story prologue, which follows Lloyd's perspective. Noel was the field character. The gameplay started at the 28:57 mark and lasted for around ten minutes:

Masumi Asano commented on Noel's butt, saying it's cute. Kondo said they pay a lot of attention to how each character looks from the back as that's what you see the most .We most notably saw the tutorial for Valiant Rage and how it's Tio explaining it in-universe to Lloyd's party.

Following that, Masumi Asano played Magical Alisa RS on Easy Mode, and Shinnosuke Tachibana tried it on Hard Mode. Kondo joked saying it looks better than the main game. You can find that segment starting the 39:50 mark:

Hajimari no Kiseki release Hajimari no Kiseki release

Lastly, Chen Yun Yun mentioned the Traditional Chinese and Hangul PC Steam versions and Hangul versions of Trails of Cold Steel I to IV. Sen no Kiseki 1 will come on January 28, 2021. Sen 2 will be in February 2021. Sen 3 will be in March 2021. And if nothing goes wrong Sen 4 will be out in April 2021. A lot of players in Asia want to play the games on Steam so they're releasing them fast.

That's all for this special Hajimari no Kiseki release stream.

The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki released on PS4 in Japan and Asia on August 27. To celebrate the release, this week's Famitsu magazine also includes a feature on Hajimari no Kiseki and an interview with Toshihiro Kondo. Where he most notably share some hints on the next game. We will be covering that interview soon in a separate article.

You can read more details on The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki with our past coverage. Most notably the new game engine Falcom is working on. We're also preparing a guide translating and summarizing the game's official site and everything Falcom revealed prior release.

The Initiative Reportedly Working on New Perfect Dark Game

One of the biggest question marks in Xbox Game Studios' upcoming catalog involves The Initiative. As one of the newest developers established by Microsoft, the studio has largely been shrouded in secrecy since its inception. While we still don't know exactly what The Initiative might be working on, a new trusted source seems to have the answer.

According to Venture Beat's Jeff Grubb, The Initiative is working on a new entry in the long-dormant Perfect Dark franchise. The shooter series, which first came about on the Nintendo 64, hasn't seen a new installment since Perfect Dark Zero released as a launch title for the Xbox 360.

Grubb shared what he has heard of the project in a strange location: the chat section of a recent Twitch stream for Kinda Funny Games Daily. The podcast's hosts happened to be talking about The Initiative, which led to Grubb sounding off in the chat saying that what the studio is working on is related to Perfect Dark. He then claimed that this new installment will be of the third-person variety rather than first-person. In a follow-up message on Twitter, Grubb said he's not sure if the game will directly be called Perfect Dark, but it will seemingly take place within that world.

There are a few different reasons here that seem to verify what Grubb is saying could be true. For starters, Grubb himself has had a fantastic track record as of late and has been one of the first reporters to have information ahead of time on numerous different projects. Secondly, Microsoft's Phil Spencer teased earlier this year that what The Initiative is working on could be tied to something that is "old" and Perfect Dark definitely fits that bill.

Obviously, you should keep your reservations in check here until Microsoft or The Initiative announce this title themselves, but we've heard Perfect Dark rumors for quite some time now. So what do you think of this idea? Is a return of Perfect Dark something that you'd like to see in the future? Let me know down in the comments.

Mafia: Definitive Edition Preview — Worth Calling Definitive

Leading up to the official release of Mafia: Definitive Edition, the upcoming remake of Mafia, I was given the opportunity to play an early build of the game and see the reimagined city of Lost Haven for myself. I also played Mafia 2: Definitive Edition on my PS4, which prompted an op-ed from me about deciding when something is a remaster or a simple port. During my short time with Mafia: Definitive Edition that question was far, far away from my mind. Instead, I found myself immersed in a gorgeous rendition of the windy city in the midst of the depression era.

Even before playing Mafia: Definitive Edition, it stood out among the pack of "definitive" Mafia re-releases. The definitive version of Mafia 3 is more of a complete edition, with all the DLC included, whereas Mafia 2: Definitive Edition included graphical changes that were only obvious in screenshots comparing this version and the game's original release. Mafia 2: Definitive Edition also struggled to maintain a stable framerate on my PS4 Pro, and I experienced multiple bugs during my time with it. But Mafia: Definitive Edition is different – it looks brand new, it sounds brand new, and from the gameplay we saw back in July, it plays like a modern title.

After roughly three hours with the game, Mafia: Definitive Edition is looking like the only entry in this "definitive" trilogy to live up to its name.

There is a marked shift, however, with something entirely different from the other Mafia titles – a commitment to being a cinematic experience. Whereas Mafia and only managed to cultivate this kind of presence during cutscenes (and even then, it's fairly rare), everything in Mafia: Definitive Edition feels as though it were ripped out of a world directed by Francis Coppola. There's a stark contrast between the extreme poverty and the extreme wealth of the 1930s visible, and in the game's first chapters, you experience that first hand. The world itself is filled with immense detail; the ever-present flicker of neon lights, countless loose objects behind bars, filthy streets populated by the hovels of the depression's victims. All of these backdrops are made stunning by Mafia: Definitive Edition's lighting system. For instance, when you're inside a dark building during the day, the outside looks realistically bright. These details add to the movie-like sense that follows the game through each mission.

Mafia: Definitive Edition may change a lot of things, but what it doesn't change is its story. The evergreen formula of a stupendous rise and meteoric fall of a criminal, akin to the stock market's actions at the time, is still engaging. If anything, Mafia: Definitive Edition brings that story to the next level with a re-written script, modern character modeling, and brilliant voice acting that brings the seedy yet somewhat honorable mobsters protagonist Tommy Angelo surrounds himself with to life. Even now, it's hard to get the voice of Sam (Don DiPetta) out of my head; it's a kind of raspy, drunkenness that perfectly matches his face. That quality carries over to all of the cast – they are caricatures of mob movie stereotypes brought to life.

My preview of Mafia: Definitive Edition, although thoroughly impressive, didn't introduce me to everything I expect the game will offer. Every chapter began with Tommy getting right into a mission – there was never any of the downtime that fans of the Mafia series appreciate. No time to go shopping for suits, knock down a few at a bar, or rob the place where you bought your suit in that new suit.

Mafia Definitive Edition

What I played revolved mostly around combat and driving, which, to be fair, are a good chunk of what players do in the Mafia titles. Tommy gets his first taste of violence wrecking some of the cars of rival mob boss Morello. During this early mission, the game introduces a new feature I haven't seen in a Mafia game before: melee weapons. And what's better to smash an old-time jalopy with than a baseball bat? Satisfyingly, every smack of the bat leaves indentations on the car. But busting up a car isn't quiet, and eventually, some goons come out to put an end to the fun.

Melee combat against enemies is fairly straightforward, but still something I haven't seen from a Mafia title before. There's a dedicated button for melee in Mafia: Definitive Edition, so no matter what you've got out, you can clock someone in the head. Hold down that button and you let loose a charged attack – bare fists make it a haymaker but with a baseball bat, you may as well be sending someone's gut out of left field.

Beating up chumps with a baseball bat is something that the Mafia franchise has been missing, but it's not the only gameplay improvement I saw in my preview. Gunplay in Mafia: Definitive Edition is the best it's ever been in the series, although it still has some kinks to work out. I only had three weapons available to me during my preview: the revolver, shotgun, and Tommy gun. Each weapon feels heavy, and that's further accentuated by the aiming reticle's bob with every step your character makes. There's a purposeful inaccuracy too, something that I adore when games do it right. Tommy Angelo isn't a soldier, he joined the mob after being a cab driver. He doesn't know much about weapons, other than that you point them, pull the trigger, and the thing they're pointed at is going down. Guns have a massive reticle, so don't be surprised if a shot you expect to hit doesn't. I did say there was one caveat to guns though, and it comes with how they sound. The revolver sounds more akin to a cap gun, and the other weapons I played with follow suit. I can't say whether or not those sounds will change between now and the game's release, but I sure hope they do.

Mafia Definitive Edition

I'm genuinely looking for one bad thing to say about my experience with Mafia: Definitive Edition that can't be chalked up the game's early build qualities, but I can't find any. I'd hazard to say it's the ideal Mafia title, something that fans of every game in the series can rally around and say, "Yes, this is what we've wanted all along." I so thoroughly enjoyed my first few hours with the game, that I'm excited to get my hands on it again next month. It's the same kind of excitement that came between every episode of Game of Thrones – I've been left on a cliffhanger and I'm hungry for more.

Mafia: Definitive Editon is set to release September 25 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Review

Sixteen years after its original release, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered has arrived for a new generation. Is this Final Fantasy worth remastering, or should it have stayed on the GameCube?

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Review

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered starts with you creating a character and naming your home village. The world of Crystal Chronicles suffers from a deadly substance called Miasma. To prevent this from reaching civilization and killing everyone, settlements have a crystal that purifies the Miasma in the area. However, every year the crystal must be restored with a substance called Myrhh to absorb the Miasma again. This is where you come in handy.

You set out form your village with a caravan to collect Myrhh in your crystal chalice. Bosses protect the Myrhh, and each dungeon you clear will have a Myrhh tree waiting for you. At first, this is real quick, with each dungeon going for about 5-10 minutes. However, this quickly increases as the in-game years go by. Once you fill your chalice up entirely, you head back home, and your crystal is purified for another year. Then the next year you set out and do it again, with access to new areas and dungeons. The story can run you roughly 20-25 hours, depending on how much side content you do.

If you haven't played crystal Chronicles before, you will be in for a shock. It isn't like typical Final Fantasy games, opting for an action-based setup instead. That's not the shock; the chalice radius will be the shock. You need to keep the chalice close to you so the Miasma doesn't kill you, which means you have to fight in the chalice radius. In single-player, you have a Moogle that will carry it for you. In multiplayer, one of the players has to move it around and then drop it to fight. It is a system that didn't work well to begin with, and time has only made things worse. This was the wrong design choice back then, and the remaster should have corrected it.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Honest Review

In single-player, it isn't so bad because the Moogle carries it for you, and you fight in the radius. The Moogle moves as you move, so for the most part, you are clear. Had they implemented this in multiplayer, it would have been great. Instead, they decided to do nothing for the multiplayer but add online for dungeons. You can't party up and travel the world together; you can just play dungeons together. The worst part is the fact that only the host gets the clear on the map. That means if you are playing multiplayer, you need to do the dungeon at least twice, or more if you are with a larger group. There are so many things they could have done to improve things, but instead the development team has left it as the archaic mess it already was.

Combat is another thing that hasn't aged well. Using the D-pad, you switch between attacks, items, defending, and magic. So if you are in the middle of a fight and want to dodge, you have to switch off attack and select defined mid-combat. Again, merely implementing a permanent defense button would have gone a long way to improve this. Once you get past the old school layout, combat is pretty fun. Your basic combo does a lot of damage, and charged attacks add variety to the battles. There is also magic for those of you who prefer to be a mage.

Magic is usually a high point in Final Fantasy games, and Crystal Chronicles has one of the better systems in place. You don't start with magic but find orbs that allow you to use magic in a dungeon (or for clear rewards later). The basic magic is bland, with players holding the button down and casting Blizzard, Fire, or whatever other spell of their choosing. It is when you fuse magic that the game becomes much more enjoyable. Fire and Ice make Gravity, double Fire makes Firaga, and so on. In multiplayer, this system is incredible. Four players putting down the same magic, and hitting the right timing can decimate enemies and looks awesome as well. The only downside is that you really need four players to maximize the system.

There is no leveling in Crystal Chronicles. Instead, you upgrade your gear and get relic rewards each time you beat a dungeon. Relic rewards for beating dungeons will give you increased stats, more HP, more command slots, or permanent magic, but you can only choose one. It is a system that incentivizes you to grind out areas to increase your stats more and more. During multiplayer, the highest score gets to pick their relic first, so there is a sprinkle of competitive gameplay as well. You can't get the same relic twice, so even if you miss out on it once, you will likely get it again if you are in a group of people.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Honest Game Review

New equipment must be crafted via blueprints and materials. Your weapon will change appearance from time to time, but it always stays the same type. Your starter race determines what weapon you will be using. Armor also doesn't change, but you can alter your appearance via Moogle stamps. As you explore, you can run into Moogle houses, and the Moogle inside will give you a stamp. After you get enough stamps, you can change into a different character. They are just NPCs you run into throughout the world, but the change-up is still nice.

Finally, I want to talk about just how annoying the random events are in the game. As you move around with your caravan, you will run into people on the road. This will trigger a cutscene, and you have to load in and out. You can't skip these, and some of them are useless. For example, I paid a Yuke 10g for some advice, he didn't say anything, and I was loaded back to the map. To top it off, every time you exit these cutscenes, it asks you if you want to check your journal. The same thing happens with when you first clear a dungeon, leave a new town, or do anything of significance. After I say no 50 times in a row, maybe the game should get the point. If I want to check the journal, I know where to find it.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered can only be recommended to the most die-hard of Final Fantasy fans, and only if they play in its single player mode. Those looking to play multiplayer with friends are going to be sorely disappointed.

Cosplay Wednesday – Final Fantasy IV's Rosa Farrell

After releasing the hotly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake earlier this year, Square Enix is bringing another classic Final Fantasy title back with the release of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition. As we get ready to dive into this classic once more, Gamers Heroes takes a look at a stunning cosplay from one of the earlier mainline entries in the series.

Taken at the 2013 Preliminares World Cosplay Summit Spain, Phadme got these striking shots of her as Final Fantasy IV's Rosa Farrell. She said that she absolutely loves how these pictures turned out, and we're inclined to agree. She even found a Cecil Harvey (cosplayed by irethminllatur) in one of the shots.

It should be worth noting though that some of her favorite entries are FinalFantasyX and Final Fantasy XIII, but we appreciate what she has done with this cosplay.

Strange Creatures Review

The Cat & Fiddle Games Team takes some creative liberties with some of our favorite pets with their new couch co-op title Strange Creatures. With support for up to four players and a number of odd powers at your disposal, do these creatures deserve your love, or are they just a bunch of pests?

Strange Creatures Review

The moment you boot up this title, you just know that things are a little…off. With species like the cataconda, bullfrog, and lecko, these hybrids are unlike anybody has ever seen before. It's not just for show though; each of these creatures has abilities that dip into the bizarre. Whether that be an extended neck or ravenous eating (and barfing), there's something for those from a wide variety of temperaments.

It's just a shame that the game is just so dreadfully dull. Players can either do this title solo or team up with three others as they set out to escape a lab. As players venture from locales like the testing bay, the cargo bay, and the med bay, they must use their abilities to do some light puzzle solving to get to the next area.

The problem with this is that the puzzles are borderline insulting. Opening a door is as simple as pressing a big red button, and even more challenging puzzles involving batteries have their final resting place just a few steps away. It's telling when the absolute worst case scenario one can find in this game is a red ball attack…which immediately respawns you five feet away. This title was clearly designed for children, so those who have moved on to E10+ titles should steer clear of this one.

Strange Creatures also has a strange fascination with checklists. There's a fine line between guiding and dictating, and the game has flown past that line with reckless abandon. There's optional tasks to get additional bags of pet food (which can be redeemed later on), but being told to collect a hefty amount of them is downright agonizing, akin to playing a game of 52 card pickup.

It's not like this title is too long, as the entirety of this title can be finished in around 20 minutes. There are some achievements to be had and different animals to play around with, but don't expect to be playing this one in the long term. All scenarios are the same, and there is no variation between playthroughs.

It should be worth noting that there is a distinct lack of polish in this title too. We encountered some slowdown, choppy graphics, and a computer that was trying its hardest to get by. It's not even a looker – the low poly look would have been right at home during the days of the PlayStation 2. This title is not optimized in the slightest, and it shows.

The endless checklists and pandering gameplay of Strange Creatures makes it an easy pass, even for those desperate for a new co-op multiplayer title.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive Edition Review

Pathfinder: Kingmaker takes place in the Stolen Lands, an area ruled by a bandit named The Stag Lord. When the game begins, you are invited to Swordlord's manor and given the task of killing The Stag Lord. However, before you can set out, the manor is attacked, and most of the other candidates given the job are killed. The Swordlord splits you into two teams, and tells you whoever beats The Stag Lord will become Baron of the Stolen Lands. You set out with a party of three and begin to hunt the bandits.

As you hunt for the bandits, you realize the lands are plagued with other problems as well. Trolls, undead, manticores, warring tribes of Kobolds and Mites, curses, slavers, and giant beasts wait to kill any adventurer that crosses their path. Pathfinder: Kingmaker is brutal when it comes to its difficulty, and entering the wrong cave or set of ruins could mean game over. It requires a more tactical approach then just running in guns-a-blazing if you want to last. You can turn the difficulty down and adjust other settings like lower critical hit chance for enemies or weaker enemies in general. Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a marathon, and completing it fully will put you well over the 120 hour mark.

With the Definitive Edition of the game, you get two options for combat: Real-time with pause and turn-based. Real-time with pause is the default setting, where you all fight at the same time. Your AI will use its default attacks and abilities, and you will auto-attack unless you pick an attack. You can pause with a single button and choose all the moves and then unpause as well, helping with tougher fights. The real-time combat mode is excellent for groups of large enemies that are weak, like goblins or kobolds. It is also much quicker than turn-based fighting.

Pathfinder Kingmaker Definitive Edition Honest Review

Turn-based combat gives you a turn order, and everyone goes on their turn. This gives you much more control over your party's movement, skills, and attacks. I preferred this mode for bosses and more powerful groups of enemies. The downside is that it is prolonged compared to the real-time fighting. A five-minute fight in turn-based can be done in half the time if you do it in its real-time style. Thankfully, you just have to click the stick in to change between combat modes, making it a nonissue for the most part.

After you defeat the Stag Lord, you get to another major part of the game: kingdom management. Put simply, being a Baron isn't as easy as it sounds. You need to manage what buildings are put in your cities, who your advisors are, which errands you send your advisors off to, and listen to citizen's complaints and neighboring countries' requests. Its a balancing act of earning income, keeping people happy, not going to war with neighbors, and picking the right person for the job. It definitely has its moments, but it can really feel like a chore sometimes.

The big problem is that you can't access your kingdom menu in other kingdoms. While you are out handling business elsewhere, something might pop up in your Barony that you can't deal with without going home. It leads to a lot of back and forth on the campaign map, which can be tiring with all the random encounters along the roads. The other kicker is that you have to load into the kingdom management screen and then load back out when you exit. It seems like this could have been a little more streamlined.

The loot system also suffers from being hit and miss. There is a ton of loot in Kingmaker; too much, to be honest. You will pick up all sorts of stuff to sell or equip. At first, the annoying thing was how often a magical weapon would just be +1 to damage and hit. You rarely get a +1 weapon with acid one it or another effect. It does mean that getting a powerful weapon like that is more special. It feels like you get 100 +1 generic longswords before something really cool. You can buy them, but they run around 24k. That's a lot, even for a Baron.

Pathfinder Kingmaker Definitive Edition Honest game Review

Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive additions also comes with all the DLC included. The Wildcards DLC gets you a new Tiefling companion (technically two) in the primary campaign, who you find shortly after becoming Baron. Varnhold's Lot gives you a short side story that happens in a neighboring area of your Barony, where you play as a new character. Beneath the Stolen Lands is a rogue-like adventure into the space beneath your Barony. You create a new party and try to clear as much of the dungeon as possible. When you die, you come back stronger and with new benefits. It is in the main campaign as well, but I didn't spend much time with it.

I guess the real question is: How does it run on the PlayStation 4?

The answer: Not great.

Load screens take a good while, and they are plentiful. New area? Load. New building? Load. Kingdom Menu? Load. Random encounter? Load. And of course, you have to load back out of all that as well. I had many frame drops, and quite a few crashes as well. Thankfully, it saves so often that I never lost more than a few steps of progress. However, that does not mean that this is okay. I will say the new patch reduces the crashes quite a bit, but they are still present nonetheless.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive Edition is a good game marred by technical problems on the PlayStation 4. As it stands, it is difficult to recommend to anyone in its current state.
