Doom Eternal is one of my favorite FPS game sequels, as it stays true to the original's epic rip-and-tear gameplay. If you've conquered its demons yourself, then you may be familiar with the game's inclusion of controversial anti-tampering software, Denuvo. It's a DRM technology intended to prevent cheating and piracy, but it often prompts criticism from fans who allege that Denuvo causes performance issues. Ring the bell, everybody, it's time for another round of game developers telling players that they don't really understand what a "game engine" is. The spark this time is little-known science fiction adventure Starfield, which I believe we've reported on before. The game has a few obvious foibles - in my experience as a space pirate, NPCs sometimes struggle to navigate their surroundings, and then there are those stark disconnects between planetary surfaces and orbital space. Hiccups such as these have led a few players to wonder whether the game might work better using different technology, and in particular, the newer versions of Epic's ubiquitous Unreal Engine. Isn't Bethesda's proprietary Creation Engine, which the company have been updating since 2011, getting a little long in the tooth?
You'll find a lot of the discussion below this post from Digital Foundry boffin John Linneman on Twxter, which has attracted both gloating PlayStation fans (remember, Starfield is Xbox-only in console land) and a number of thoughtful replies from some fairly senior game developers. This conversation goes back a fair way, of course - people have been ragging on Bethesda for using "the same engine" for years. And there's a definite air of world-weariness to some of the developer responses.

Retro Game Challenge GameCenter CX will come out on the Nintendo Switch in Japan. It combines both the first and second GameCenter CX games, which were originally released on the Nintendo DS, into one collection. A limited edition of the game will also be available, which will include an original DVD of clips like Arino's Challenge.
You can watch the trailer for Retro Game Challenge GameCenter CX here:
The game lets you play retro games from the perspective of children in the 1980's. There are even gaming magazines that you can flip through, with tips on the back for difficult titles. As you play, you'll steadily unlock newer generations of consoles. In total, there are over twenty original retro-style games that you can enjoy in Retro Game Challenge GameCenter CX.
Retro Game Challenge originally came out in 2007 in Japan. An English version came out in 2009. In Japanese, the title is Arino's Challenge. In the game, you take on the role of a kid who has to play retro games in order to appease Demon Arino. This is a riff on Shinya Arino, who is a Japanese comedian and actor. He is also the star of gaming variety show, GameCenter CX. Only the first game was localized and released worldwide.
Retro Game Challenge GameCenter CX will come out in Japan some time in the future. It will also be at TGS 2023. There is no information on a Western release.
