PCGamesN Tuesday, January 14, 2025 7:46 AM  Gordon Freeman's classic toxic crowbar adventure is about to get even more realistic, as the Half-Life 2 RTX Remix project is working on adding Nvidia neural rendering to the game, in addition to ray tracing. I had a chance to play the game with the new tech on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090, and it looks damn fine. Many of the technical details of Nvidia neural rendering tech are under wraps at the moment, but I was given a glimpse of what's possible with the tech in Half-Life 2 on an Nvidia rig at CES, and it really brings out the benefits of realistic lighting in the scene, not just in the scenery but also in the characters. PCGamesN Tuesday, January 14, 2025 7:27 AM  After nearly a year of silence from Asus, the first details about the company's Meta-powered VR headset have apparently leaked out. Originally announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in April 2024, the idea is that Meta would supply its operating system - Horizon OS - to hardware manufacturers such as Asus. The best VR headset designs have seen a huge shakeup in recent years, with firms largely ditching VR systems that are explicitly tied to gaming PCs, instead opting for a hybrid model. The Meta Quest 3 and 3S provide both a built-in experience and the ability to connect to PCs. The announcement that the operating system would be made open to manufacturers such as Asus was supposed to add to that shakeup. Six years later, it sports a 'very positive' rating on Steam, and a player count in the thousands. Frostpunk 2 isn't so lucky. The user reviews are less enthusiastic. Similarly, in the last 24 hours, Frostpunk 2's concurrent player count peaked at a comparatively meager 856. But if it let you down at launch, there's a new reason to go back to 11 bit's sequel - and it's all about Frostpunk 2 mods. New leaked benchmarks have sprung up from Geekbench, showing that it's not far off the performance of the recently launched B580. Intel's Battlemage GPU has quickly rocketed up some people's shortlists, thanks to its low price. However, the B580 has routinely sold out since its launch, making it one of the best graphics cards we've not been able to grab yet. The Intel Arc B570, which comes in at $219, is now also showing some promise, especially with its cheap price, but only if there's decent supply of it. It's no surprise to see this Gigabyte card being so expensive – performance-wise, the RTX 5080 is set to join the RTX 5090 as one of the best graphics card models you can buy for gaming, and Gigabyte will have also added all the water-cooling gear. Despite a glowing Steam Deck review for its original best handheld gaming PC, and with a hugely well-received follow up in the shape of the Steam Deck OLED, Valve is playing the slow game with new Steam Deck models. That's despite two generations of more powerful AMD CPUs that could be used to power a Steam Deck 2. Still, with it only being just over a year since the Steam Deck OLED's release, and three years since the first-gen device, there's still plenty of scope for Valve releasing a new model on more of a console-like update cycle, with a fresh device perhaps due in the next year or two. Well, a former senior artist at Bethesda has revealed in an interview with Kiwi Talkz podcast (cheers VGC for the spot) that they'd originally planned for it to have decapitations but decided against them in the end. |

But 'tis the start of the year and I felt like I had a duty to give some of them a proper whirl and see what's what. Thus I was lured once again into the roguelike genre, for which I am an eternal sucker. Developed by Wave Game, Magicraft sees you play as a kid who's isekai'd into another dimension (or at least, I think he is, because I chose the option to "skip the story" when I selected new game and only later deduced the situation) and tasked to mince all the demons within it. It's typical fantasy fare with an interesting twist: you can combine any number of spells within your inventory, which made me feel very clever, even if I had no idea what I was doing. |

Deriding a good cheap scare ignores the endorphin rush that draws so many players to the genre, in the same way that the "elevated horror" trend forfeits some of the soul of schlocky slasher flicks and ghost movies. Don't get me wrong, Silent Hill and Alan Wake deserve their flowers - but even those games would wither on the screen if Pyramid Head didn't bust through a wall from time to time. One unsung jump scare game in particular pioneered horror in the internet age, blazing everywhere from nascent social media to major television networks. In fact, if you had an internet connection circa 2005, there's a good chance you played it. Alas, it was too ahead of its time, too successful at leveraging virality before viral horror was sought after. Next time you see a streamer throw their headphones across the room in fright, beware: the spirit of Scary Maze Game is right behind you. |

Unsurprisingly, in retrospect, the trailer also has big The Witcher vibes. The stringy orchestral music? The dramatic monologues? The horrible things happening to armoured grunts? This thing's really playing the Polish fantasy hits. |

I'm happy to discover this explanation, because at first I thought that "spance" was just a litigation-avoiding, supermarket rebrand of "space". I was bracing to send the good news to developers Skyglow Softworks that, so far, nobody has managed to copyright "space", though I'm sure somebody's tried. Maybe, um, God? It's a relief to know that God won't be suing Skyglow Softworks for breach of copyright, because off the back of two demo missions, Annihilate The Spance is worryingly compelling. It's a mixture of space RTS and autobattler, wherein you construct bases that produce spanceships who autopilot towards the nearest and largest concentration of enemies. According to the developers, it's inspired by the 2011 Flash game Obliterate Everything by CWWallis (RIP), which I dimly recall playing while I was running a browser game blog for AOL.
