Former Skyrim mod The Forgotten City is coming to Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass is continuing to expand as the best deal in gaming - at least in terms of pure dollars-to-hours-of-entertainment value. We've just got details on a load of new games coming to the service in October, in addition to today's releases of previously-announced Game Pass games including Into the Pit and the PC version of Outriders, we're getting a load of cool stuff.

On October 21, we'll get access to Everspace 2, a spaceship combat game that essentially blends Diablo-style loot with Star Wars: Rogue Squadron-style shooting. It's been looking very impressive, even in Early Access. The same day, we'll also get the brand-new voxel RPG game, Echo Generation.

Then, October 28 brings us a monster drop of games. The most pleasant surprise here is The Forgotten City, a Skyrim mod turned into a full game, where you're stuck in a time loop exploring a doomed Roman city. The original version was already beloved, and the standalone release has been getting rave reviews and a spot on quite a few early GotY lists.

Final Fantasy creator beats FFXIV: ARR in two weeks, Heavensward in two days

Close to 18 years after leaving Square Enix, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has been trying his hand at one of the most popular games in the series since his departure, leading to some rather wholesome content on Twitter. It turns out, though, that Sakaguchi isn't messing around when it comes to catching up in Final Fantasy XIV, as he's completed the Heavensward expansion in just two days.

As spotted by Fanbyte, Sakaguchi tweeted about starting Heavensward on October 12 before updating everyone that he rolled credits on October 15. To put that into perspective, he first started tweeting about beginning the game on September 27, which means it took him around 16 days to finish A Realm Reborn. That's some serious improvement in the grind. Sakaguchi isn't letting FFXIV dominate too much of his time, though, as he's taken breaks to do things like attend his daughter's wedding.

It's still wholesome, though, to see that Sakaguchi is making his way through the MMO. He initially started playing ahead of a special Tokyo Game Show talk with FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida about the appeal and potential of RPGs. Even though the event has come and gone, he still hung around to see what the hype behind Heavensward is about.

Wondering how to complete the Ariana Grande punchcard quests? The Fortnitemares Fortnite Halloween event is here, and there are plenty of spooky additions to the battle royale game. When you fly over the map on the Halloween battle bus, you may notice a new blocky purple POI called Convergence, with the Cube Queen hovering overhead, surrounded by a yellow shield.

That's not all that's new - Ariana Grande is back on the Fortnite map. This time, instead of performing a concert for us, she's got some punchcard quests for us to tackle. There are five stages to the Ariana Grande monster hunter punchcard, and completing them all grants you 150,000 battle pass experience and the all-weather extractor pickaxe skin in the 'dark style'. Fortnite Crew subscribers also receive the 'brite style'.

There are plenty more freebies available to unlock in the Fortnitemares Halloween event; completing Dark Jonesy's punchcard quest gives you a free glider, and the Ghostbuster punchcard quests also grants you rewards.      Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition is free DLC for everyone

Microsoft Flight Simulator flew into our PC gaming hearts back in 2020, and with continued updates and a console release, it's only gotten better. Now the devs have announced Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition, and while we reckoned that MSFS was only the seventh-best game of that year, with all the free DLC coming, I guess we can let them have this.

Microsoft Flight Simulator's GOTY Edition will be a free update for all versions of the game, and will launch on November 18. The free DLC will include six new Discovery Flights, 14 new tutorial missions, an updated weather system, early DirectX12 support, a dev mode replay system, and will update Helsinki, Freiburg im Breisgau, Brighton, Derby, Eastbourne, Newcastle, Nottingham, and Utrecht with detailed photogrammetry.

The update will also include five new aircraft: the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet (coming before the delayed Top Gun: Maverick DLC), VoloCity, Pilatus PC-6 Porter, CubCrafters NX Cub, and Aviat Pitts Special S1S.

     Europa Universalis 4 DLC guide

So, you want to know about EU4 DLC? It's almost hard to believe that Europa Universalis IV is eight years old. The grand strategy game's many expansions total well over $200 at full price, and that's just for the major add-ons. Whether you're new to the game and you want to know what's what, or you're a vet looking to top up your collection, we've put together this handy guide to help you pick the expansions that are right for you.

Keep in mind that older Paradox expansions can get discounted anywhere between 25% to 75% off during sales. The longer something has been out, the bigger the discount. This list is in chronological order, so you can probably get the stuff at the top for a couple bucks if you wait for the right moment.

Also note that as of March 2021, there is now a subscription option available for EU4's DLC library, which will net you access to everything for a monthly fee - more on that below. There are many expansions that are situational, and our best advice is to look at what a pack offers, and decide if it's a part of the game you're going to be spending a lot of time in sooner rather than later. If not, it can wait.

Warzone Ghosts – how to play as a ghost and respawn as a human

The Ghosts of Verdansk gamemode arrives in Warzone as part of The Haunting Halloween event, and there are plenty of spine-chilling challenges to face in this seasonal game mode. If fighting for your survival in the city of Verdansk wasn't invigorating enough, the new game mode introduces a paranormal challenge to the battle royale game.

When players die, instead of heading to the gulag, they're turned into ghosts. Ghosts are able to move around the battlefield with ease thanks to their weightless bodies. You can't fire weapons as a ghost, but you can swipe at your enemies to deal some damage. This spectral threat has a psychological impact on players, too, in the form of a fear meter that gradually increases whenever you're in peril. A maxed-out fear meter leads to your character hallucinating, making it even harder to survive. In order to secure a victory in Ghosts of Verdansk - and complete the achievement to unlock the new LAPA SMG - at least one of your squad must be alive as a human at the end.

The Ghosts of Verdansk gamemode launches on October 19 and lasts for two weeks, so you have a limited time to get to grips with ghostly combat. Here's how to play as a ghost in Warzone.

Europa Universalis 4 gets more DLC next month

Paradox Interactive is bringing Africa front and centre in the next EU4 DLC pack, Origins, and it features new mission trees for a range of prominent nations during the grand strategy game's time period. We've already had a glimpse at the new Mali missions in a past EU4 dev diary, but Songhai, Kongo, Ethiopia, Ajuuraan, Kilwa, and Mutapa will be getting new mission trees as well.

In addition to this, some of the minor African nations will be getting new mission options, and there'll also be a range of new music themed on West and East African cultures, new unit sprites, and expansion of the Jewish religion. The DLC will also include the Ethiopian Jews of Beta Israel, and Jewish nations in general can now choose from nine religious traits that come with new flavour events.

As always, the expansion will launch with a free update as well, which we're expecting to be the 1.32 patch. Not all of the details are known yet, but last week's dev diary did look at some new monuments that will be coming to the game with the update, although you'll need the Leviathan expansion to make use of them. Adding too or changing the content that's come in past DLC is something EU4 has dabbled in for a while now, and it's also started to be replicated elsewhere in things like Stellaris' Custodians initiative.

Intel's Alder Lake i9 gaming laptop CPU might sport 14 cores and 20 threads

Just yesterday, we learned that a 16-core Ryzen 7000 could make its way to gaming laptops next year. While AMD's rumoured high-end mobile gaming CPU stacks up against Intel's plans for an Alder Lake-S chip with a similar core count, a new Ashes of the Singularity benchmark suggests that the blue team has a second 12th gen i9 portable processor in the pipeline.

Spotted by Benchleaks, the Intel Core i9-12900H supposedly has eight Gracemount efficient cores and six Golden Cove performance cores, giving it a combined total of 14. As a result, the processor also features 20 threads, half of which support hyper-threading. Of course, the AOTS software incorrectly detects 20 cores present within the laptop CPU, which is likely a symptom of its hybrid architecture.

Sadly, the i9 Alder Lake-P benchmark fails to mention clock speeds for both the processor and the memory used during the test, so it's unclear whether the chip used DDR4 or DDR5 RAM technology during testing.

Call of Duty Warzone The Haunting Halloween event guide

Want to know more about The Haunting Halloween event in Warzone? The spooky season has finally arrived in Warzone, introducing a batch of unique challenges, the LAPA SMG, and a scary new game mode. This is the first time the battle royale game has received a major mid season update within two weeks - Warzone Season 6 launched at the beginning of October.

The reason why the last Black Ops Cold War-themed season is shorter than usual is because the Call of Duty Vanguard release date is quickly approaching. The devs have been careful not to give an exact date as to when Vanguard integrates with Warzone, but we do know it's going to take place this year. This means every Call of Duty Vanguard gun will be added to the battle royale game, and a brand new Warzone map will replace '80s Verdansk.

Verdansk is going to appear under nightfall for the final time as ghosts roam the battlefield searching for souls. Here's everything you need to know about The Haunting Halloween event in Call of Duty Warzone.

Total Warhammer 3's new trailer pits Cathay against Tzeentch in an epic siege

You've seen what Cathay brings to the table, you've seen Tzeentch revealed in all its deceptive glory, now you can watch them fight each other in a new action-packed trailer for strategy game Total War: Warhammer III that sees Kairos Fateweaver trying to breach one of the gates along Cathay's Great Bastion.

It's a scripted trailer, but it does use in-engine footage, and you get to see plenty of the new Cathay and Tzeentch units revealed so far in action. If you're looking for something more informative, Creative Assembly also released a post yesterday detailing the faction mechanics for Kislev.

Kislev's principle concern is devotion, which represents not only how well you as a player are upholding the ideals of Kislev, but also an abstraction of your people's will to defeat Chaos. It can be gained easily by fighting Chaos-aligned armies, as well as sacrificing captives post battle. You can also get it through various decisions and buildings. Should it dip too low, invasions from Chaos armies will become more frequent, as the people stop believing the great enemy can be beaten.

Fortnite NPC locations – where to find Ariana Grande and Ghostbuster

Want to know where the Fortnite NPCs are? Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 is now live, and it's all change for how quests work, as Fortnite punchcards return. Punchcards are obtained from Fortnite NPCs and each contains a series of quests for you to complete.

Each of the Fortnite NPC punchcards has five quests you need to complete to finish their questline, some of which ask you to go into The Sideways. Luckily, you only need to talk to these NPCs once to begin their questline, though since you only have five punchcard slots, you can only pick up five questlines at once. Once you've completed a questline, you are free to find one of the other NPCs and start their punchcard quests.

NPCs don't just give out quests. They also have items for sale, taking gold bars as payment. Some of these items are vital to complete quests, so it's worth remembering where they are. To help you out, we've put together a guide to all the Fortnite NPCs locations. There's already a hint that Epic will add more NPCs to the map soon, so do check back often to see if there is anyone new to find throughout the season.

All of the Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 punchcard quests

Want to know how to complete all of the Fortnite punchcard challenges? For those who weren't around when punchcards last appeared in Fortnite, they provide a series of challenges to be tackled in a particular order. Fortnite punchcards fall into two different categories: daily and weekly punchcards, and character punchcards.

Each character punchcard has five challenges for you to complete, with each one appearing straight after the first one is complete. You can only follow up to five questlines at a time, so look at the Fortnite NPCs locations to find out where to pick up another questline after you've finished all five in one batch.

You may wish to plan to complete several of these challenges in one go, so here are all of the Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 8 punchcard challenges in the game. Some quests refer to a new area called the Sideways, which has all sorts of nasty creatures inside. There's a ton to go through right now, and more quests will appear when more NPCs appear in the game - this week sees Ariana Grande, Dark Jonesy 'Oracle', and Ghostbuster join the list.

A new Splinter Cell game has reportedly been greenlit

It looks like we might be getting a new Splinter Cell game, and Ubisoft could reveal it as early as next year. VGC reports that the developer has greenlit its first mainline game in the series for close to a decade in a bid to win back fans who have been frustrated by recent efforts to "revive the franchise" on mobile and VR platforms.

VGC also reports that it isn't clear which studios are working on the project, though sources suggest that a studio outside of Montreal is leading development. The game is reportedly still in the early phases of production, but there's still a tiny chance Ubisoft could reveal it next year. We've reached out to Ubisoft for comment and will update this story if we hear back.

The most recent Splinter Cell game we got was Blacklist back in 2013, though Ubisoft has revealed that a VR game and Netflix series is in the works. Quizzed about the lull in mainline entries, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told IGN that the series needed to evolve before it made its return.

Apple claims its new M1 Max SoC beats Nvidia's RTX 3080 gaming laptop GPUs

The GPUs found in the best gaming laptops, both discrete and integrated, have substantially improved over the past several years, and offer respectable gaming and productivity performance compared to their desktop equivalents. However, Apple has changed the game when it comes to productivity performance with the latest iterations of its M1 SoCs, particularly the M1 Max, which the company claims can trade blows with and even outperform Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics cards.

The M1 Max consists of ten CPU and 32 GPU cores, with 64GB of unified LPDDR5 RAM, all contained within a single SoC. It's important to note that the M1 Max is an ARM based chip, whereas all the best gaming CPUs from both Intel and AMD are based on an x86 instruction set, which makes performance comparisons partially indicative of ARM's potential advantages over processors designed with x86. This is all the more exciting when you consider Nvidia is looking to make its own ARM chips to rival Apple, AMD, and Intel.

At its most recent Apple Event, the California tech giant showcased benchmarks that show its new M1 Max is capable of delivering the same "relative performance" as integrated and discrete graphics solutions, in "select industry-standard benchmarks", while exponentially increasing performance per watt.

W.A.S.D is a new consumer videogame event that comes to London next year

The United Kingdom is getting a new consumer videogame event next year. As part of the London Games Festival 2022, W.A.S.D will bring a host of publishers and developers to London's Tobacco Dock, giving you the chance to play some games, meet the odd content creator, and hear from developers about their latest games.

If you're looking to get your start in the games industry, there will be plenty of opportunities to get advice from developers about starting your career. W.A.S.D is also hosting the Games Finance Market's face-to-face meetings, though you'll need to wait until later this year to hear more details. PCGamesN's parent company Network N is also on board as the event's media partner.

"W.A.S.D ensures there's a consumer focus for London Games Festival, bringing both indie and big-budget games together," Roucan founder David Lilley says. "We know that developers love to exhibit in a relaxed atmosphere and to get valuable feedback from gamers as they play. We're looking forward to those in the trade coming down to have a coffee with new connections and enjoying a drink in the bar when the show closes."

Noblechairs Hero TX gaming chair review – comfort at a cost

It wasn't until I really sat down (hur hur) and started evaluating Noblechair's Hero TX gaming chair that I realised just how much of a chair's DNA can be viewed through the lens of personal taste. Sitting in it right now as I write this review, I'm still confident in my assessment that it's a pretty decent piece of kit, but there's still plenty to say about it. For this kind of money, it's important to be honest with yourself, and with anyone else thinking of buying this gaming chair.

Considering I've been using a dining room chair for the past month, I was rather excited to be trying out something different. Memories of my comfortable - old - office chair, which my wife has now claimed as her own, had been dancing around my head all through construction. I was then quite genuinely surprised how mixed my feelings were when I eventually sat down on my new Anthracite throne.

Am I disappointed? No, but then this also wasn't what I was used to with my past chair. Am I comfortable? I'm… not sure. I have plenty of support, my shoulder hurts less thanks to the fine adjustments I can make to the '4D' armrests, and sitting in the Hero TX gives me a sense of stability and support I never knew I was missing. But it still isn't quite the same.

It's a hard life, being a soothsayer in Grotto. You live in a dingy little cave, the locals look at you with varying levels of distrust and suspicion, and occasionally your campfire will perk up and talk to you when no one's looking, its yellow flames turning an ominous shade of blue as it whispers dread-filled words about failure and the beating heart of the mountain into your ear. It's unclear how you ended up like this, but day after day you're tasked with consulting the handful of stars visible through a crack in the cave's ceiling to dole out advice to the local tribespeople, a group of anthropomorphic animals known only as The Brutes.

Said advice comes in the form of 24 constellations you can discover by looking up and drawing shapes in the sky with your mouse. You'll need to give one of them to each Brute that asks you a question, but when every constellation has its own fortune-cookie-like meaning attached to it, finding the right one to answer their question successfully can be a challenge. As the toad man Ouuch tells you at the start, if you ask three separate people what the word 'blue' means to them, you'll get three separate answers. Sometimes, your intentions will be misinterpreted, while others will willfully ignore you. But one thing Grotto always manages to do is to keep you coming back for more. Once you've set this car crash of consequences in motion, it's very hard to tear your eyes away.

According to their sources, the next iteration of the franchise is early in development. The outlet's sources didn't have a lot of detail, however. We don't know which Ubisoft studio may be spearheading the project. Nor do we yet know what the game will be about, if it will still star Sam Fisher, or if it's a sequel or prequel.
