Classic MMO Old School Runescape sees return of its most iconic quest

One recurring problem in gaming has been an enduring unwillingness to look back. That's especially a problem with live service games, such as MMOs, which are continually evolving with no way to step back in time to experience the games as they were. Thankfully some developers are trying to fix that, with World of Warcraft Classic and Old School Runescape being the two most popular retro experiences. The latter of these is just about to get a huge boost, with the return of one of the game's most iconic quests.

The tower defense genre has fallen slightly out of favor in recent years, which is only natural after an era where games like Plants vs Zombies, Kingdom Rush Vengeance, and Sanctum 2 so heavily dominated the strategy space. Hunt: Showdown has been a mainstay in the multiplayer FPS space since it first came out back in 2019. Fishing For Cats Steam Trailer screenshot of the main character fishing while surrounded by cats

Fishing for cats, a new game by the indie developer xigehong, will make its way to Steam on July 25, 2024. The game is described as "a third person casual game where players fish in the park and attract stray cats," will be a realistic fishing sim set in a park full of cats.

The title, Fishing for cats, also describes the core gameplay loop. Players will be angling for fish and feeding it to the local cats in the park, building a relationship with the many cats they will encounter. You will also be able swim in the lake, go for pleasant jogs around the park, and roast fish to entice the many felines that will be roaming about.

You can take a look at screenshots from the game below:

Zenless Zone Zero Has a Pacing Problem

For a game about encouraging fighting and battle encounters, HoYoVerse spends a lot of time in Zenless Zone Zero keeping players away from or limiting their time with the combat that is the best part. The pacing in the tutorial and campaign feels flawed. Not to mention the movement methods to "explore" the Hollow detract from the experience, given the execution and only occasional opportunities to witness the space firsthand.

I think it hits hardest because this is going on from the very start. While other HoYoVerse games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail wall off elements like multiplayer opportunities or certain events until you reach certain ranks or complete specific tutorial missions, neither feature the flawed and extended pacing of Zenless Zone Zero. The time it takes to finally meet our protagonists Wise and Belle, isn't too bad. However, getting to a point when you can freely explore Sixth Street and access every facility involves actual hours of playtime. It's quite a shock.

Screenshot by Siliconera

This isn't helped by the actual mission-based and Hollow-exploration experience. Whereas other HoYoVerse games like Honkai: Star Rail and Genshin Impact involve exploration, unique environments, and opportunities to engage with the world, Zenless Zone Zero… doesn't. Quests involve moving along a "map" of monitors, occasionally solving block-pushing puzzles, only to go into battle in the same sorts of bite-sized spaces repeatedly. While these enemy encounters eventually start to be a bit more varied after about five hours of play, early on it does feel like you're spending most of your time moving along the screen grids or seeing comic panel cutscenes to take part in between two and five 2-3 minute battles.

The way in which Zenless Zone Zero handles its characters also can result in awkward pacing, given each person controls differently. So unlike games like Genshin Impact or Honkai: Star Rail, where we have versatile protagonists that can adopt different roles in teams due to shifting their element or path, we don't have a main character who can be a Jack of all trades to help us ease into it. This is a game where who you manage to own matters more than ones where having teams of certain paths or people with certain weapon types means you can generally be fine. If you don't like how the first few free characters you get in Zenless Zone Zero work, you're in trouble.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Worse, the pacing means you're forced into using initial free characters that aren't exactly great or easy to use. The free pre-registration bonus character Corin is a slow DPS character very dependent on fellow Victoria Housekeeping allies and additional Mindscape unlocks to be viable. Of the free Cunning Hares characters, Nicole is the only potentially viable one due to her crowd-control abilities. It is very possible you won't even find a character you like using until you unlock the ability to use the gacha and pull someone else, which can take a few hours based on your luck. I personally didn't start to really enjoy combat until I got a random-luck Rina from Ellen's focus banner within my first 10 pulls and got Nekomata from Star-Studded Cast guaranteed launch five-star.

Zenless Zone Zero didn't start clicking for me until I helped the Cunning Hares and Nekomata with their case. By that point, I'd already been playing for at least an hour each day for five days since the July 4, 2024 launch. If I hadn't been doing so for work, I'm not sure I would have stuck with it. All the while, I kept thinking that there are elements of a good game here! The character design is fantastic. I like the bits of lore that come through. Once I started using a team made up of Nekomata, Rina, and Anton, I even really got into the combat. However, the pacing for the campaign got me every time, and I worry that it could affect the game's success unless HoYoVerse makes some adjustments.

Zenless Zone Zero is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices.

Crunchyroll and Toei Animation announced that people who attend SDCC 2024 will get to see the One Piece 25th Anniversary: Symphony Voyage concert. It is one of two Crunchyroll concerts at the event, with the other being the LiSA at the Crunchyroll Concert Series at 5pm PT/8pm ET on July 26, 2024.

Both the Crunchyroll Concert Series and One Piece 25th Anniversary: Symphony Voyage concerts will be free if someone paid to attend SDCC 2024. However, when discussing the One Piece one, Toei and Crunchyroll both did note it is a "first-come, first-served" performance. As such, those with badges who want to attend may want to line up early, and the doors open at 5pm PT for both.

In the case of the former, it will be at the San Diego, California Jacobs Park The Rady Shell. In addition to LiSA, Alice Longyu Gao will sing. The announcement also reminded how LiSA performed Demon Slayer's "Gurenge" and "Homura" songs. She also performed the Fate/ series songs "Ash," "This Illusion," and "Oath Sign," the My Hero Academia ending theme "Datte Atashi no Hiro," and Sword Art Online songs like "Crossing Field," "Shirushi," and "Unlasting."

With the One Piece 25th Anniversary: Symphony Voyage concert, it will feature the San Diego Symphony performing songs from the series. That will also be held at The Rady Shell. Photo ops will also be available. There will also be other events at the performance. The concert itself will last for 90 minutes total.

The San Diego Comic Con will be held July 25-28, 2024. The One Piece anime is streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix. Viz Media handles the manga outside Japan. The live-action show is on Netflix, with season 2 in production.

Hear the Elden Ring Rellana, Twin Moon Knight Theme Song Performed

FromSoftware and Bandai Namco shared a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree song for Rellana, Twin Moon Knight. The performance video shows the full video of the orchestra and vocalists performing the track for the DLC.

Here's the full over two minute video for the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Rellana song. Moments of the segment focus on the strings, brass, and percussion sections. There are also moments when the vocalists are shown as well.

However, given how Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree works, you may not have met Rellana, Twin Moon Knight when going through the DLC. She's at Castle Ensis, so you might not encounter her if you don't go there.

While there's no more recent news about the game, George R. R. Martin discussed another project possibly tied to it. He was involved in the creation of lore for the title. In one of his latest blog posts, he brought up the rumors about a possible show or movie based on it. He noted, "I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?"

Elden Ring is available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, as is the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
