Best anime villain Kira Light Death Note

Many anime rise and fall based on their villains. The team here at Siliconera picked our favorite villains in anime history. Be it memorable, charming villains or downright horrifying characters, these are the best anime villains of all time.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Best Anime Villain Ever

As much as I'd like to name Oikawa for the meme, I have to say that I really liked Kira/Light of Death Note for the exact same reasons I liked Walter from Breaking Bad. He was not as charismatic or clever as he thought he was, nor as moral as he made himself to be. Everything he did in order to make something "better" for himself only ended up making things worse for the people around him, but at least Walter owned up to it. I do love how, just like with Walter, there are people who genuinely don't seem to realize that you're not supposed to be rooting for Light. The only thing I wish for with Death Note is that Madhouse gave him the same death he had in the anime: crying and squirming around in his own blood like the worm that he is. -- Stephanie

"It was me, Dio!" Like clearly, I have to go with Dio Brando. LOOK at how much trouble he's caused for the Joestar family and the world! Even when he isn't Dio Brando and is instead, like, Diego Brando, he's still unbeatable! He has this overwhelming charisma and energy, plus he's just so easy to hate. I love him as a villain so much! -- Jenni

Johan Liebert from Monster is truly the most haunting anime villain I've ever seen in a series. How this series starts and the moral questions Johan's existence brings from the beginning are tragic and unmatched. This guy is unlike any other anime villain, being such an emotionless and disturbing genius from start to finish. Don't miss this unforgettable villain, even if the animation is starting to show its age a little. As a slight aside for second place, I'd have to give it to Makoto in School Days. This guy manages to consistently outdo himself every episode as the most unlikeable anime protagonist/villain of all time. -- Cody

Puzzle roguelite RoGlass is Balatro with tiles, and you can try it now

With Balatro taking the world by storm, I've been on the hunt for more puzzle-focused roguelikes and roguelites. Hades, Dead Cells, and Risk of Rain will always be special, but too many of the genre's stalwarts are all about combat. Trading cards for tiles, then, RoGlass is an incredibly unique roguelite that's been around for a while, but only just managed to get a Steam demo. The best part, it absolutely rules.

Splitgate 2 looks sensational, but I'm experiencing some portal panic

I've played plenty of great new competitive shooters over the last few years, but if I'm being brutally honest, I can't remember any of them feeling quite as fun and fresh as the original Splitgate. Who knew that dropping real-time portals into a Halo-esque arena shooter would produce such an addictive gameplay loop with a super-high skill ceiling? It seems obvious now. As a result, I've been waiting in anticipation for its big budget, Unreal Engine 5 sequel, Splitgate 2, to arrive. This week, we all finally got the chance to see gameplay for the very first time, and it looks absolutely sensational - however, I'm a touch worried that it may have lost the soul of the original.

Somehow, Valve might have two new games in development right now. Between Half-Life 3 and Deadlock, the Steam maker has stayed radio silent on what could be next, but this hasn't stopped us all from guessing. After Counter-Strike 2 and Half-Life Alyx came out of nowhere, certainly anything's possible. The Tokyo Debunker Localization Makes It Worthwhile

So there are times when a translation of a title can really hurt a game. Fortunately, the opposite is also true. Enter Tokyo Debunker, a Disney Twisted Wonderland type of mobile game. The constant social media ads from ZigZaGame convinced me to give it a chance. While it very heavily lifts from other stories for its concept and characters, the sheer effort put into its localization keep me plowing through and reading the story.

Like Disney Twisted Wonderland, Obey Me, and similar titles, Tokyo Debunker is an otome adjacent adventure with some RPG elements, a gacha, and lots of attractive, single young men in a school setting. In its alternate setting, ghouls, demons, and supernatural elements exist. The player character is a young woman who ends up cursed by such an anomaly. In the process, she encounters two ghouls from Darkwick Academy sent to dispatch it. Since her encounter and curse, which will also kill her in a year, mean the matches used to erase ordinary people's memories no longer work on her, she's forced to remain at the school. Moreover, further encounters leave her tied to a legendary artifact that allows her to boost the powers of any ghoul if she's touching them. It also means she won't be sorted into any of of Darkwick's houses (Frostheim, Hotarubi, Jabberwock, Mortkranken, Obscuary, Sinostra, or Vagastrom) and instead gets her own living space.

Oh, and many of the ghouls tend to have a bad boy or villainous nature.

And when you're pulling from the gacha, you're collecting cards of characters that act as fighters in auto-battle, turn-based fights or equipment.

There are also fake calls and character stories.

Anyways. I'm not here to go, "If you like Disney Twisted Wonderland or Obey Me, you should look at Tokyo Debunker." (You would, probably.) It's more that even though this game does feel like it is cut from the same cloth and has so many similar characters, the writing is so strong that it feels fine.

For example, the first four ghoul characters we meet in Tokyo Debunker and the initial encounters with the anomalies are the main reason I kept playing. In the first, the story hooks you perfectly. The being that catches you off guard and curses you is horrifying, but also beautiful. When you meet Taiga, he's so brutal, raw, and vicious, but also sort of hot as he figures he'll solve the problem of you — an innocent human bystander — by throwing you off the train. Haku, the ghoul who basically steps in with a "please don't" to keep that from happening is so level-headed and kind. It's a wonderfully memorable way to pull someone in.

From there, I admit I was a bit flabbergasted to see Professor Not-Satoru-Gojo (Hyde) and Professor Not-Korosensei (Moby). I got concerned, given they're so similar to anime characters, and you can sort of see that influence creeping in with other members of the cast.

But after I met Not-Zenitsu-Agatsuma (Kaito), Tokyo Debunker completely won me over with its charm and story despite feeling so familiar. The characterizations are hilarious and allow for such fun interactions between members of the casts. It also enhances the actual investigations of the various supernatural situations the ghouls cover. It's so well written and the localization is handled so well, I'm was okay with it. Sure, the two orphan kids in trouble at the institute with Slenderman are named Sora and Riku. Of course they are. Let's go save their lives. The only downside now is that sometimes my team of characters ends up being too under-leveled or underpowered to keep going through the story, but so far I haven't seen myself too walled off.

Tokyo Debunker is just fun! Yes, a lot of the background feels very familiar. You can see Disney Twisted Wonderland and Obey Me in the Tokyo Debunker DNA. The thing is, it really builds on that to ensure the story and characters are entertaining.

Tokyo Debunker is available on mobile devices.

My Poison Princess Is Still Cute Manga Highlights a Healthy Relationship

Slice of life manga series with romantic elements are often a great opportunity to also read about a healthy relationship between characters, and throughout its three volumes My Poison Princess is Still Cute has been a perfect example of that. Though Princess Raffy and Loren are thrown together to ensure a peace agreement between humans and demons, the genuine earnest affection between the two and growth leading up to the finale result is an incredible cute couple.

Editor's Note: There will be no spoilers for the My Poison Princess is Still Cute manga ending below.

Much of My Poison Princess is Still Cute is about the growing relationship between Raffy and Loren. It's a perfect pairing in many ways. Both are genuinely kind and considerate people, though they needed to be involved in a war between the two races prior to the events of the story. For Loren, it's because he is an immortal knight who was a key part of the human army. For Raffy, it was due to being the princess of the Demon Lord Valon who emits poison gas when certain emotions come up The first volume is about the two really getting to know each other, especially since there is a mutual attraction and respect between the two of them and they're taking to slow as they really get to know each other.

What's so wonderful about the series is how the second and third volumes build on this before closing out the story. In the second entry, we're seeing Loren and Raffy find common interests. We realize triggers for Raffy's poison, and the two find ways to connect even with the threat of Loren temporarily dying. They try to find common interests, like gardening or tea parties.

Then Loren's former master Adelie comes around, and My Poison Princess becomes a slice of life manga about not only one healthy relationship, but two. Initially, she's a great addition due to being another trustworthy, positive influence for Raffy and Loren. After all, her strength means she can even put up a shield that can protect her from Raffy's poison for a bit. But then we get to meet her husband, hearing and seeing their relationship, and they're just as stable! They met at work. They balance each other out. They uplift each other and are very supportive.

By the time we get to the third and final volume, Loren and Raffy are really feeling like they're an actual couple. They're working together better. They're dealing with Raffy's poison. They have support from friends, family, and the princess' household staff. We're even seeing them celebrate their half-year anniversary as a married couple. The events of the latter half of this volume especially establish how far this pair have come and how the healthy relationship between them grew throughout the manga. So when conflicts do arise, they're in a position to not only address them, but meet them in a way that continues to show how much they care about each other.

Really, the final volume of the My Poison Princess manga really helps it all come together to show what a wholesome, healthy couple and sweet relationship Loren and Raffy built. Even though it happened for political reasons, we get to see them connect and work together. There is mutual affection and respect, and it results in a really delightful read.

All three volumes of the My Poison Princess manga are available via Yen Press.

This year's Prince of Persia Metroidvania is 40% off, and essential

I've spent a lot of 2024 going to bat for Prince of Persia The Lost Crown. Ubisoft brought back one of its best IPs at the start of this year to almost no fanfare, and that's a massive shame. The Lost Crown is a truly inventive Metroidvania with a plethora of free updates since launch, and it finally came to Steam earlier this month. The launch was met with a 'mixed' reception from barely 250 user reviews, and this is nothing short of a travesty. The game's price has already dropped and it even has a 40% off sale, so now's the perfect time to give it a try.

As someone with over 300 hours in Final Fantasy 14 in the last year thanks to the free trial, I can attest to how the right MMO can dig its claws in you. If you're new to the genre like I was with FF14, you need a lot of time to understand the systems and mechanics these massive games are known for, and the dedication of a monthly subscription isn't good for that. Elder Scrolls Online already doesn't require a sub, but if you're still hesitant to put down the asking price, a new QuakeCon event gives you some time to try the game for free.
