My Hero Academia chapter 403 release date and time

All good things must come to an end at some point, and so is the case with My Hero Academia. The beloved manga series has gone on for 10 years and is now completely over by the time you're reading this. I actually really love how My Hero Academia ends, especially in the case of Deku and his romance status.

I should warn you ahead of time this will contain full spoilers for the conclusion of My Hero Academia. If you are reading this soon after publishing, the anime has not even come close to catching up to the manga's ending yet. As such, if you are watching only the anime or are not caught up on the manga, now is the time to turn around.

Image via Toho Animation and Shueisha

Still here? Great! I am proud of the series' creator Kohei Horikoshi. Horikoshi avoided the pitfalls and awkwardness of other similar shonen series in terms of romance. Not only is Deku's quirk state a phenomenal full circle closure for the hero, but he sticks to himself in the end relationship-wise.

Despite the confession from Ochaco in chapter 429, Deku doesn't appear to end up with her after the eight-year time skip in the final chapter. In fact, it implies he doesn't have much to do with any of his Class 1-A classmates in the future. I honestly prefer it this way, as Deku and Ochaco didn't seem like a compelling couple.

This is a general problem with a lot of similar shonen manga and anime series. Series like Demon Slayer, Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, and others feel the need to end with the main character falling in love with someone. Some of these series work well, but others feel forced and out of left field. My Hero Academia would certainly fall into the latter category if Deku fell for Ochaco.

Sure, I admire Ochaco's clear feelings for Deku throughout the series. However, there is almost no indication from Deku's side to hint at any reciprocating feelings. In all honesty, Deku's relationship with Ochaco almost feels no different than what he has with the lovable but villainous Himiko Toga. Overall, it makes more sense for there not to be a clear winner in this love triangle.

Image via Toho Animation and Shueisha

Deku has such a huge focus on saving the world that romance is seemingly the last thing on his mind. Even after the time skip, he focuses more on raising up the next generation of heroes. His character is the lone wolf in a way, keeping his friends close but at a reasonable distance.

Almost none of the characters make that much sense to end up with him from what we see in the series, so I'm grateful Horikoshi stuck to this conclusion. Beyond Ochaco, as much as I love Toga, she does some horrifying acts. So partnering her with Deku wouldn't make much sense, either.

Mei Hatsume somewhat matches better with Deku personality-wise than either of the other two girls, but she is in the background a little bit too much. As such, I feel like none of the options work that well for this series. In the end, I appreciate Deku's seemingly single relationship status.

My Hero Academia Deku romance love interest
Image via Toho Animation and Shueisha

This result shows that a fantastic manga and anime series like this one doesn't have to conclude with romance. This shows the series is about saving the world, not who ends up with who. I hope that more shonen action series take from My Hero Academia's spin on romance. In a way, it's like having your cake and eating it, too. Fans can still ship characters for fun without the actual series taking away from what really matters. And, honestly, I think I prefer it this way.

The My Hero Academia manga is available to read from start to finish on Viz Media and Manga Plus. The anime adaptation is available on Crunchyroll.

snow miku 2025

The design for Snow Miku 2025 has been decided. The winner is X (formerly known as Twitter) user "nekohoshi_neko," and the theme for this year was "Kira Kira Snow Material."

Piapro didn't give specific guidelines or a description for the prompt. However, it seems that nekohoshi_neko interpreted it to mean individual snowflakes. There are snow crystals in Miku's hair, as well as in the her dress. Meanwhile, her pigtails curl at the ends and have different-colored streaks, as well as snowflake designs, in them. Unlike normal Mikus, she has a cat-shaped mouth. Rabbit Yukine, the little mascot and friend for Snow Miku, has a similar little outfit. However, the ornament in its hair is a snowball rather than a snowflake.

Piapro chose the winner for this year. You can check out the other submissions, as well as the runner-ups, via the official website. The other designs have very different takes on the prompt. For example, one of them chose to put the hexagonal design of snowflakes in the hem of Miku's dress. Another one focused more on the bright and glittery aspect of snow. As a reminder, the winning design for Snow Miku will appear as a Nendoroid in the future. There will also be a special theme song for the character. You can check out the past Snow Miku designs here.

The Snow Miku 2025 Nendoroid will likely appear some time next year.

honkai star rail music

One of the few things that the HoYoVerse fandom can agree on is that the music in HoYoVerse games is, for the most part, really good. Some tracks even classify as straight-up bangers. The soundtrack of Honkai: Star Rail in particular stands out to me due to the sheer amount of battle themes that can exist in each world when compared to its contemporaries.

Back when I played the closed beta, something that immediately stuck out to me was how much I liked the default battle theme in Herta Space Station. Okay, look, it's not fancy or epic or anything. It's just a vibe and I liked it a lot more than the default Mondstadt battle theme in Genshin Impact (which I was playing literally right before going into the closed beta). I liked it enough that after HoYoVerse shut down the beta servers, the first thing I did was go to YouTube to see if someone uploaded it. So from the beginning, I was quite a fan of Honkai: Star Rail's musical aesthetic.

As the game continued and the updates came out, I felt surprised in a good way at how HoYoVerse tends to add new battle tracks to the game, even when we aren't going to a new world. Genshin Impact is the only other HoYoVerse game I play where I pay attention to the music. But in Genshin, there are only about two or three tracks per region and they feel random. I know that certain tracks only play in certain areas, like how the Sumeru desert and rainforest have separate themes. Listening to them, though, they sound very similar due to sharing the same instruments and general style. This is unfortunate since the different regions look so distinct from each other! So I wish they could sound more unique as well.

In comparison, worlds in Honkai: Star Rail have individual battle themes for different locales, even if they share a world. Compare the Scalegorge Waterscape with the Shackling Prison, Fyxestroll Garden, Cloudford, and the Alchemy Commission. Those areas all look and feel vastly different, so it's great that they all have their own battle themes rather than sharing from a limited bank. In the most recent update, story bosses have regained their unique battle themes in modes like Memory of Chaos and Divergent Universe. This is great, as I'm a big fan of certain ones and it's nice to not listen to the same four or five Echo of War battle themes every week when I want a change of pace.

On paper, it's not that big of a deal. But music is more important than you might think! Check out this Harry Potter edit that was making rounds on the Internet a while back. That poppy music in the background is doing a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to imparting that spring flick vibe. I've long been of the opinion that the D.Gray-Man anime suffered a little (whether the original or Hallow) from hiring Kaoru Wada as the composer. Wada is great. But his style incorporates a lot of traditional Japanese instruments and sounds that really brought Inuyasha to life, yet feel weird in the gothic European setting of D.Gray-Man. Even if the writing, acting, and cinematography of a scene are perfect, a poor soundtrack can ruin the whole thing.

Would I have noticed anything off with the game if it didn't change the soundtrack based on individual maps rather than worlds? Probably not. Nonetheless, it's a nice touch that I appreciate. The sheer amount of variety in music helps to make the world of Honkai: Star Rail feel larger and grander than it may be, which fits perfectly with the space opera genre. Now if only the designs for the female characters' outfits could take some notes!

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices.

nintendo switch 2

While Nintendo has not given any concrete information, market news comparing Nintendo and Sony have predicted that we may see the Nintendo Switch 2 some time in early 2025. With the Switch growing older, Nintendo may need to release something new in order to keep up with trends. [Thanks, Kabutan!]

Various sources over the years have given tidbits of information regarding the Nintendo Switch 2, or whatever Nintendo will name the successor to the console. It will likely be on the "cheaper" end at under $499, yet its specs will be slightly inferior to that of the PS4 Pro. For reference, the current price for a a normal Nintendo Switch is $299.99. Meanwhile, an OLED model is $349.99. Kabutan is guessing that the Nintendo Switch 2's price may lead to inbound demand generation due to differences between the US dollar and the Japanese yen.

Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda was the one who predicted that the Switch 2 would come out in early 2025. He stated that Nintendo made way less money compared to Sony, as well as its own previous year. However, this was within Nintendo's expectations for two main reasons. Firstly, unlike last year, Nintendo doesn't have a major hit like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which would affect its growth. Second of all, the Switch is in its eighth year now. So it stands to reason that hardware sales would go down.

If Yasuda's predictions are accurate, we may see the Nintendo Switch in early 2025 (likely some time within Q2 2025). Until then, we will need to wait for Nintendo's official announcement.

Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers update makes the new roguelike easier

If you enjoyed Balatro, then there's a good chance you've already tried - or at least have eyes on - new Steam roguelike Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers. The indie deckbuilder has been affectionately described as 'Blackjack Balatro' (although Balatro creator 'LocalThunk' is quick to remind people that DnDG was actually playable first, and that they highly endorse it). While it's a ton of fun and has received mostly positive reviews, the most common complaints at launch center on it feeling a little too tough, with some opponents feeling unfairly strong or having too much potential to scale out of control.

League of Legends dev delays big matchmaking updates to patch 14.17

If you've played League of Legends at any point over the last few years, chances are you've run into some matchmaking problems of various intrusiveness. For some players, it's the off-role parity being way off, with multiple teammates playing an auto-filled role. For others, it's the massive LP gap between players in a game, leading to skill imbalance. LoL developers had planned to tackle these issues plus more in the most recent update to the game, but ran into some significant backend issues, leading to them being delayed.

Hunt Showdown 1896 dev delivers emergency response to review bomb

It's fair to say the response to Hunt Showdown 1896 has been a mixed one. Five years after it first launched, the backwater extraction shooter from legendary PC developer Crytek - who previously brought us Crysis and the original Far Cry - has kicked off a brand new era acting as a soft relaunch for the FPS game. Combined with a free weekend to celebrate, the change has seen Hunt Showdown reach all-new Steam player count highs, but it's also been met with a 'mostly negative' user review score. In response, Crytek delivers a special developer update.

slitterhead trailer

Bokeh Game Studio has released a new trailer for Slitterhead, its upcoming horror action game. This time, the trailer gives more information on what the story will be like.

You can watch the Slitterhead trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EENlMq23sE

The story seems to be set in Hong Kong, or a similar location. Enemies are monstrous parasitic monsters that attach themselves onto people. We can also see some of the key characters who have appeared in previous trailers. This includes a character with white hair, a character wearing a hood, and a character with a helmet. They may be the same character, considering part of the mechanic of Sliterrhead revolves around entering other people's bodies and controlling them.

Slitterhead is the first game from Bokeh Game Studio, and it will be an action-adventure game with horror elements. Though it's Bokeh Game Studio's first, the executives and founders of Bokeh Game Studio aren't new to the craft. Keiichiro Toyama, Junya Okura, and Kazunobu Sato worked together on the Siren series, Silent Hill series, and Gravity Rush series. According to interviews from them, they stated that they used seinen manga like Tokyo Ghoul as inspiration for the game.

Slitterhead is in development for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. It'll come out on November 8, 2024.

Cat Quest 3 Key Art

Cat Quest 3 is the latest in a series of adorable little action RPGs that have attracted a small but loyal audience. For the third game, the typical medieval setting has been ditched in favor of one based on pirates. And this high seas swashbuckler is one that you'll want to get your paws on.

In Cat Quest 3, you play as an unnamed young cat pirate heading out on his first adventure with the ghost of veteran pirate Captain Cappey. Your adventure starts on a small island in the Purribean where you steal a ship and set off to find the mysterious North Star Treasure. Along the way, you have to deal with rival pirate captains all with their own plans for the booty.

Screenshot by Siliconera

This start sets a great impression. You're immediately introduced to the various aspects of combat, which mainly consists of a melee weapon, a ranged weapon and a spell. Then you get a ship and can head off into the world after breaking the flimsy barrier between you and freedom. And I do mean freedom, as the world is fully explorable from the start of the game, although certain corners of the map will likely stomp you into a fur rug without a little levelling.

The Purribean Sea of Cat Quest 3 is small but dense. It's an assortment of islands dotted around the ocean, all containing their own secrets and treasures. The ability to sail around all these places right out the gate offers a huge amount of freedom. Even within the story, you never fully feel like you're being funneled into a specific direction. While there is a direct line of events that need to be followed, many of your objectives branch off into multiple locations that can tackled in any order, whether that's collecting keys for a tower or defeating different pirate captains.

Tucked away between these main objectives are a ton of additional side stories, such as a lovelorn rat whose ghost still haunts his castle or a convoluted mail delivery chain that involves a wedding and a deep-seated rivalry. These side stories make exploring the world of Cat Quest 3 a joy. While you're journeying to find where the game wants you to go, you'll trip over countless side activities along the way. There is never a dull moment here.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The game is also determined to immerse you in its map, avoiding a lot of the tedium and bloat that can sometimes infect the open world genre. While your objectives will be marked on your map in the menu, the main game has no non-diegetic markers aside from an optional one you can place yourself. This forces you to use the environment around you to navigate, which I'm always a fan of. It helps that the map is small enough to become familiar without feeling too limited.

It manages to introduce the world to you without holding your hand too much. Your initial guides around the world are star towers that point vaguely where you need to go, but you have to triangulate with multiple towers to find your objective. In the process, you quickly become aware of which islands are where, and soon navigating this map becomes second nature. It happens to organically that I didn't notice how little I was using the map for navigation until about halfway through the game. I simply headed off in whatever felt the natural direction at the time.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Combat in Cat Quest 3 is something you'll find yourself spending a lot of time doing. It's simple action-adventure fare, with a single attack button, a weapon switch and some optional spells, but the way these elements are brought together is surprisingly deep. There are multiple types of melee and ranged weapon, creating a range of combinations. You can attack with a sword, a shield or claws. The shield is slow and heavy, but offers more defense, while the claws are risky but speedy.

Meanwhile, ranged weapons include guns and wands, which offer different combat styles. Equipping the Meowchine Gun will give you weaker damage per shot but a massive clip, while the blunderbuss type weapons are powerful but can only fire a couple of shots before needing to be reloaded. Clothing and other equipment also adds a wide range of additional abilities, such as the ability to heal while attacking. The result of this is a combat system with a heavy amount of customization, making it suitable for anyone's play style.

Combat also offers plenty of challenge. It's not Dark Souls by any means, but there will be times where boss encounters will cause you some difficulties. Some fights might crush you unless you swap out your equipment to combat elemental damage, while others require alertness and liberal use of the dodge mechanic. This goes for ship combat too, especially as you get to more unique ships within the Meowtallica and Captain Takomeowki fleets. Ship combat against the captains' flagships is especially stressful, as some of them can become slow-moving bullet hells. And every single one of these fights is a lot of fun, even when you're beaten.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The story adds to the fun too. Cat Quest 3 has a simple plot, where you are racing against other pirates for a vague treasure that hides secrets, but the execution is fantastic. This is not a game that takes itself too seriously, most obvious in how many puns are baked into the game's writing. Your enemies are actually called "pi-rats" and "meow" and "purr" are tossed liberally into any sentence that will fit them (and even a few that don't). Every character you meet is goofy and charming, often with absurd quirks. But there's also heart here too, as your protagonist and Captain Cappey develop a close friendship. You'll fall in love with every single member of this cast.

Visually, Cat Quest 3 has a lot going for it too. It's reminiscent of Square Enix's HD-2D style, with layered 2D sprites mixed with 3D models in a diorama-style view. The characters sprites are adorable, especially the main character. He's got a happy little face on him and seems to be having the time of his life in every animation. Even the save animation, where he hops into an immediate nap for recovery, is aggressively cute.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Cat Quest 3 is an excellent game, so much so that I'm scrambling to find criticism of it. It could maybe benefit from a fast travel system or a method to improve the speed of your ship. It could be seen as a little too short, clocking in at around ten hours if you really explore the world. The cat puns may become a little excessive at times. And that's really all I can find to criticise it. Even then, many of these aren't an issue for me, as the game's density of content makes up for the length, the lack of fast travel may contribute to how intuitive the world is and the cat puns were all part of the charm.

I loved my time with Cat Quest 3. Exploration is joyful, combat is a lot of fun and the story is silly and charming in all the right ways. If you want a small but dense pirate adventure full of good humor, Cat Quest 3 is for you.

Cat Quest 3 is out now for PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.
