It's a Metroidvania shmup in which you fly about, blast enemies with guns, and cast spells from a deck of cards. For all the bang and zip of the combat, it's also deeply cosy, with lush 2D art and sweet character relationships in an underground post-apocalyptic world that's still somehow filled with plants, rustic cabins and cute market stalls. There's a free demo to play now. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Saturday, December 17, 2022 5:23 PM I played hundreds of hours of Minecraft in the years after its original release, but hadn't returned again until recently. It turns out the standalone expansion I needed was a son. He's six years in development and today I introduced him to a private Minecraft multiplayer server for the first time. Exploring, building, and the vibes are all as wonderful as I remember. Perfect timing: Mojang have just released a series of Minecraft "Soothing Scenes". There are five in total and each one is an hour-long video featuring a recreation of a Minecraft setting, from rainy swamp to cosy fireplace, to help you unwind. |

Siliconera Saturday, December 17, 2022 7:30 PM The animated adaptation of Arknights is getting a continuation and a change in title. Studio Yostar Pictures announced Arknights: Perish in Frost in a video stinger aired during the eighth and final episode of Arknights: Prelude to Dawn. It is unknown if Perish in Frost is formally considered the second season of the Arknights anime. Arknights: Perish in Frost will continue the anime adaptation of the "Main Theme" story campaign of the Arknights game. The first set of episodes, Prelude to Dawn, adapted the prologue and first three story chapters of the Main Theme. As in the game, the series is set in the urban fantasy world of Terra. Menaced by disasters, the many races of Terra are also dealing with a plague called "Oripathy" brought on by exposure to Terrans' main fuel source, Originium. The "Infected" who contract Oripathy are treated as pariahs, abused and persecuted. Rhodes Island, led by Amiya, is a hybrid pharmaceutical research company and paramilitary unit that defends Infected rights while seeking a cure for Oripathy. In Prelude to Dawn, Amiya rescues the player character, codenamed "The Doctor" from the city of Chernobog, which is collapsing under the weight of an uprising by the Infected, led by the revolutionary group Reunion. Arknights: Perish in Frost continues the story of the Chernobog Crisis, as Rhodes Island makes new allies against Reunion, while discovering that allies in common cause can have dark sides as well. The title suggests that Yostar Pictures may adapt at least the next three in-game story chapters. Those chapters cover Rhodes Islands' conflict with Yeti Squadron, a band of Reunion fighters led by the elite FrostNova, whose infection-enhanced abilities give her control over ice and cold. The voice cast from Prelude to Dawn will continue in their roles for Perish in Frost. Tomoyo Kurosawa will voice Amiya, while Yuki Kaida will voice The Doctor. Kurosawa also voiced Ringo in Soul Hackers 2 and Sothis in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Kaida voiced Kurapika in Hunter x Hunter and Riki in Xenoblade Chronicles. Arknights: Perish in Frost anime is in production, but does not have a release date. The Arknights game is available on iOS and Android devices. Siliconera Saturday, December 17, 2022 4:30 PM Good Smile Company opened up pre-orders of a scale figure of Scathach-Skadi (Caster) from Fate/Grand Order. Pre-orders will close on January 26, 2023. She will cost 26,800 JPY and ship out in February 2024 for Japan. Those in North America will have to pay $186.99 and can expect to see her in April 2024. The Scathach-Skadi figure is a 1/7 scale one, standing at approximately 300 millimeters in height. She is in her third Ascension, in which she wears a pale lilac dress and has her hair up in a ponytail. Her pose does not appear to draw any inspiration from the game. She wields her wand high in the air, and there are crystals at the base of the figure. Here are some more pictures of the Fate/Grand Order Scathach-Skadi figure: [gallery ids="944011,944010,944009" link="file"] In Fate/Grand Order, Scathach-Skadi as Caster was the Queen of the Scandinavian Lostbelt. Though she has the same appearance as Scathach, her personality is completely different, as she is more Skadi than Scathach. Not only was she the Queen of the second Lostbelt, but she is a goddess as well. In the Summer 2022 event on the Japanese server, a swimsuit version of Scathach-Skadi was in the gacha as an SSR Ruler. The Fate/Grand Order Scathach-Skadi (Caster) figure will come out in February 2024 for Japan and April 2024 for North America. Fate/Grand Order is readily available on worldwide devices. Siliconera Saturday, December 17, 2022 3:00 PM There are certain iconic Studio Ghibli characters. Totoro is immediately recognizable, even if someone hasn't seen My Neighbor Totoro. KiKi's Delivery Service's Jiji is familiar, if you know the film. The Soot Sprites (Susuwatari) show up in multiple films. Among these mascots is No-Face, the masked spirit from Spirited Away. It's an innocent, impulsive, easily influenced presence, one who constantly appears throughout the movie. Now, there's a No-Face figure with a sensor light that is equally charming, though best used as a night light. To start, the Spirited Away No-Face figure isn't as heavy or substantial as other static figures. This is because of its dual-purpose nature as a decoration and functional light. It's a lightweight plastic and stands at just over six inches tall. The lantern is a separate object that is held in place at the end of the character's stick by two magnets. An on-off switch appears on the base. A weighted bottom would have been nice. Especially if you might decide to keep it on a desk, where it might be nudged, rather than a shelf where it won't be touched. The "motion sensor" noted in the description is in No-Face's mouth. It is quite sensitive! As long as motion is directed within its range, say if you have it next to you on a desk while you are typing a review even if it isn't directly facing you, the lantern's light will glow. It isn't an especially bright light. You won't be able to read by it. Rather, it is better described as a warming glow. [gallery columns="4" ids="943954,943952,943951,943953" link="file"] What I especially liked about it is how there's a certain level of authenticity with the lantern. I wonder if it is because of the magnetic connection and motion sensor combination. I noticed the No-Face lantern figure would flicker sometimes. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but it offered a homey appeal. Like this really is the familiar character carrying a lantern with a flame inside. The magnets are sufficiently strong too. The Spirited Away lantern immediately snapped into place, once I threaded it through the No-Face figure's stick. If knocked over gently onto a desk, it stays in place. However, if it falls from a greater distance or more force is used, that lantern will 100% fly off and possibly get damaged. In short, the No-Face lantern figure is a pleasant reminder of Spirited Away. It is a soothing sort of presence. I liked to turn it on my nightstand at night while I'd play games on my Switch before bed. It'd be calming enough to provide a little extra brightness, but wouldn't be as jarring as having an actual light on while I played. The No-Face lantern sensor light figure is available at the Bandai Namco shop. It costs $45. Spirited Away is streaming on HBO Max and can be purchased digitally. Siliconera Saturday, December 17, 2022 1:30 PM For those who dreamed of completing a Yu-Gi-Oh Millennium Puzzle so that the spirit of a dead Pharaoh can possess you every time you want to play a game with your friends, there is a toy for that. Bandai Spirits opened up pre-orders for a Millennium Puzzle Complete Edition toy in Japan. You can purchase it for 8,800 JPY, which is around $63.80. [Thanks, Famitsu!] Once you put in the final puzzle piece, the puzzle will glow and music will start to play. This is a recreation of how the puzzle reacted in the Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters anime adaptation when Yugi finished the puzzle. The light uses LED, and there are some gaps in the puzzle (made from ABS) to let the glow through. The music that you can listen to are "Voice" (which was the first Japanese opening of Duel Monsters), "Yugi," and "Passionate Duelist." "Passionate Duelist" should be a familiar track for anyone who watched the Japanese version of Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters. After you finish putting together the Millennium Puzzle, you can wear it around your neck just like Yugi. It will come with a leather cord for that purpose. You can also just display it, and the puzzle will come with a stand for that purpose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l7x_Lo8vbc You can pre-order it from Premium Bandai, AmiAmi, and the Kaiba Corporation Store. Some of these stores do not ship internationally, in which case overseas customers will need to use a proxy service. As of the time of writing, the Millennium Puzzle is not on the global AmiAmi site, and Premium Bandai only offers domestic shipping. The Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters Millennium Puzzle is open for pre-order until March 9, 2023. It will ship out in July 2023.
