shin megami tensei ttrpg tokyo conception

Shin Megami Tensei - The Roleplaying Game: Tokyo Conception is a TTRPG based off the Shin Megami Tensei series that'll come out on September 10, 2024. Pre-orders for it are open via Amazon.

You will need three to five players, as well as a GM to play. As you can imagine from the title, it will have lots of terms that a Shin Megami Tensei player should be familiar with. The references to Shin Megami Tensei aren't just in the spells you can use and demons you can fight. Shin Megami Tensei: Tokyo Conception will include systems from the game. You'll be able to negotiate with demons, as well as inflict or be inflicted by status ailments. That's on top of the usual TTRPG elements of rolling dice.

Tokyo Conception plays within the world of Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne, but you will not need to have played that first in order to play the TTRPG. In fact, according to the publisher, you won't need to have knowledge of the franchise at all to leap in and understand the plot. The book will contain nearly 100 pages with demon stats, as well as seeds, so you can use it to make your own campaign as well.

Shin Megami Tensei - The Roleplaying Game: Tokyo Conception will come out on September 10, 2024.

Wow Threads of Destiny

Blizzard released a new story cinematic trailer for World of Warcraft titled "Threads of Destiny." The video shows the past of Ansurek the Nerubian Queen, a secondary antagonist who will appear in The War Within expansion.

Before the launch of an expansion, Blizzard often likes to release cinematic trailers to provide context or teasers for upcoming story developments. This one focuses on the Nerubians of Azj-Kahet, whose Queen Ansurek allied with the expansion's main villain, Xal'atath. Ansurek will be the final boss of Nerub-ar Palace, the first raid of The War Within that is set to launch on September 11, 2024.

The Nerubians are a race of spider-like creatures who have appeared as far back as Warcraft III, though this may be the first time we see one of their cities fully intact. As well as hosting the first raid, the Nerubian city of Azj-Kahet will also be an explorable zone in the expansion.

You can watch the full World of Warcraft "Threads of Destiny" cinematic trailer via YouTube below:

A recent update added a new pre-expansion event to World of Warcraft titled Radiant Echoes, which involves fighting the ghosts of iconic raid bosses past. Meanwhile, pre-orders forThe War Within expansion are available and include cosmetic armor sets, mounts, and even beta access at some tiers.

World of Warcraft is available now for PC and Mac, while The War Within expansion is scheduled to launch on August 26, 2024.

hanako-san of the toilet toy

Megahouse will release a new toy based on Hanako of the Toilet, a popular Japanese urban legend. It'll come out in early August 2024.

The toy is called "Dokkiri Hanako of the Toilet," and it's quite similar to toys like Pop Up Pirate. Each player will take turns pulling down the lever of the toilet. Depending on your luck, something will pop out of the toilet on your turn. Items that will pop out are a bug, toilet paper, or Hanako herself. This toy will not require any batteries and will cost 3278 JPY ($22.70).

Hanako of the Toilet, or Hanako-san, is a very famous urban legend that pretty much everyone in Japan knows about. There are various backstories for Hanako depending on the version you hear. But in general, she's a young girl named Hanako who haunts school toilets. Like with Bloody Mary, some children may try to summon Hanako-san as a dare or a game. Because of her popularity and ubiquity, many Japanese properties feature Hanako-san as a character, or base a character off her. Examples include Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun and Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II.

The Hanako of the Toilet toy will come out some time in early August 2024. So it should be out some time soon.

Castlevania Dead by Daylight

When the Castlevania and Dead by Daylight crossover was announced, I wasn't all that excited. And I'm a pretty big Castlevania fan. I mean, I dressed in the stylings of a Castlevania character for an entire year, and even the middling Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series has grown on me after being starved of content for so long. Some of you are probably reading this thinking, "Kazuma! The Netflix series exists!" and I know that, and I don't like it.

So when Behaviour Interactive announced that it would be collaborating with Konami to bring Castlevania into the fold, I immediately assumed it would be versions of the characters that appeared in the popular Neftlix adaptation. Color me surprised when it was not. In fact, the version of Trevor and Dracula that appear in the crossover are actually two of my favorite designs. One could argue that Dracula has more or less looked the same across generations, with the version he appears as clearly being more akin to Symphony of the Night. But Trevor, oh Trevor Belmont, he's ripped right out of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and I love that.

While I might have lost some of you at Lords of Shadow, Curse of Darkness is actually my favorite Castlevania game. I love it for a lot of reasons; for Hector and Isaac, and the weird Digimon-esque Devilforging system. I just think it's a lot of fun, and I love the character designs and the sort of theatricality of it all. It's Castlevania through and through, even if you're not immediately playing a Belmont.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness was a maligned entry in the series. Almost all Castlevania fans just wanted that classic 2D platforming experience, and while Konami was desperately trying to make 3D stick for the series, it just wasn't taking. But it had all of the flavors, all of the visuals, and was a deeply satisfying game. At least to me. I'm just one of those weirdos that actually likes a lot of the less loved entries in the series, but I've always loved Curse of Darkness. This is probably why I don't care for the Netflix series, even if it has arguably done a lot more for Castlevania than Curse of Darkness has.

That's why I was totally surprised it was Curse of Darkness Trevor that made it into Dead by Daylight. Not that I'm complaining. I'm absolutely going to slap down the dollars to purchase this Chapter, even if I don't play Dead by Daylight all that much anymore. (I'm extremely casual, and have only popped in for the Silent Hill and Resident Evil Chapters.)

So I just wanna thank whoever at Behaviour Interactive and Konami came to the decision to incorporate one of the less-liked Castlevania entries into Dead by Daylight. Because Dead by Daylight is a behemoth of a game and seeing one of my favorites designs from the Castlevania games over something that's just generally popular, is awesome.

Dead by Daylight is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X. The Castlevania crossover Chapter will come to Dead by Daylight on August 27, 2024.

Seto Kaiba and Yami Yugi Nendoroids face off

Good Smile Company opened pre-orders for the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh Nendoroid of Seto Kaiba, and people who buy directly from the company get a decorative Blue-Eyes White Dragon sheet for him to "summon." The figure is slated to release in December 2024 in Japan and Q2 2025, and it can currently be pre-ordered directly through the company until September 18, 2024.

For those of us in the US and Canada, the figure is available on the US storefront for $44.99. For those living elsewhere, it can be preordered on the Japanese international store for ¥7,400.

The Nendoroid of Seto Kaiba puts him in his white coat from the Yu-Gi-Oh Battle City arc. It will stand at 10cm (3.94 inches) tall. The face plates let someone display him with a proud smirk, a serious glare, or a shouting face. In addition the figure will include parts for the Battle City Duel Disk, cards, his signature pendant, and various arm parts for different posing.

Here are the sample images, which show off the Nendoroid's poses and expressions:

For a limited time, all orders from the Good Smile Company site will come with a background sheet of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. That comes with a stand, so it can be displayed behind the figure.

I love the concept behind Exhausted Man and feel it is a genuinely clever game, but the nature of some tasks mean it's best played in bursts.

I get so tired. Like when I check my smart watch, sometimes during busy weeks or seasons I'll have under six hours of sleep per night. Plus with things like inflation or family troubles, that's more stress. Exhausted Man, a new game from Candelman Games, gets that and shows exactly how much effort it can feel like it takes to get things done. It's really clever! But, at the same time, it's also honestly a bit of a chore given how tasking some challenges can get in this physics puzzler.

Everyone in Exhausted Man is exhausted. From the woman going through exercises in the tutorial to the people like the game developer preparing a demo ahead of a festival. It's a real problem! However, they still need to accomplish tasks, and that's where players come in. Each person will need to accomplish a set number of "tentpole" milestones over the course of a limited number of acts, while also managing energy levels. If you manage to get all the hallmarks done, you get an optimal ending situation. However, being so tired that you can't even stand up or properly move your appendages means getting through the two to five tasks for each selected challenge each act could feel like an impossible task. Funny and clever, due to some fun flavor text, but tiring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RQWT3UiJqo

At the start of each "pack" and adventure you open in Exhausted Man, you hear a quick story about the goal the character is trying to accomplish in the game. You then see how many milestones you need to complete to make certain major story beats happen and get a best result. Cards will appear, depending on the props placed in the room. Each one will take up a certain amount of your limited time (but is not timed), will potentially give you multiple milestone points, and will either add to or detract from your overall energy. Completing a task also can unlock more items to place and allow you to set up more before the next act. So it's almost like you're pairing a stat management simulation with an action puzzle game.

Also, there's a nap button. That's fun. I like naps.

The thing about Exhausted Man is while I admire its concept, its humor, and the social commentary, playing this game can really tire me out! If you have your character get too tired, then there will be these yawn bubbles spawning. If you run into them, your avatar just falls asleep for a second and drops, potentially losing any progress you made. There will be moments when you can't choose which "event" will happen next in the story, that could lead to a challenge that is multi-part or especially frustrating. Even if you do pick a next act that is one you think will work, you may find out after selecting it that the items you chose as critical parts to interact with it weren't good options due to their size or them possibly moving. Building gets frustrating, since it means needing to constantly shift the camera angle to properly gauge positions and, again, maybe not selecting certain items as proper setpieces for that series of actions. Also, stages get crowded toward the ends of stories since you're constantly getting to add new props, and sometimes I wished there was an option to just… not place items before the next act.

I love the concept behind Exhausted Man and feel it is a genuinely clever game, but the nature of some tasks mean it's best played in bursts.
Screenshot by Siliconera

Some anti-frustration features are in effect in Exhausted Man, to Candleman Games' credit. If your character gets stuck, you can head into the pause menu to unstick them and basically get a fresh start. I noticed after I got so exhausted that choosing an energy-rebuilding act card wouldn't make a dent, a forced event would come up that would completely refill energy. Also, there is an option to just… reset and pick a different act and challenge completely if you realize what you went with was too much and isn't working. They're little things, which help.

Also, there's the fact that you don't have to power through Exhausted Man if you are getting annoyed or exhausted. You can take breaks and come back to it. I'd recommend playing it that way! I rushed through, for the sake of the review, and it wasn't ideal.

Besides, it isn't like the controls are really ever working against you when you play Exhausted Man, especially compared to other physics games. I did have some trouble with building up "ladders" out of items. However, moving around the avatar and generally completing tasks is pretty easy. The character is responsive, and the only time I'd ever get tripped up is if the person started slithering around awkwardly shaped items (like the large toy dragon) or ones that move (like the spinning chair. The physics are on point, and it's possible to use momentum and the generally tight controls to accomplish any tasks.

I love the concept behind Exhausted Man and feel like it is a genuinely clever game, but the nature of some of the tasks mean it's best played in short bursts. Going into too many challenges at once, especially if you end up with a forced task or one that ends up being more annoying than expected, might even feel a bit stressful. Still, the concept is sound and I do recommend it! Just take your time and don't rush.

Exhausted Man is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Balatro dev writes into their will that it can't be used for gambling

Balatro stands a very real chance of being my 2024 game of the year. It's an inventive take on card games and roguelikes that uses the rules of poker as a universal baseline. The score-chasing of arcades combines deck-building and rule-bending joker cards to create some wild combinations. Balatro is an ingeniously original game that already has its imitators, but that hasn't stopped consistent comparisons to real-world gambling. It's gotten so bad, in fact, that the game's creator has now written a clause in their will to keep Balatro as far away from casinos as possible.

As the wait lengthens for Hollow Knight: Silksong, other Soulsy creature features are scurrying to fill the breach. We had Deviator last week - now, it's time for a bumper helping of the heebie-jeebies in the shape of Perennial Order. The title makes it sound like an eBay delivery of potted geraniums. The game festering beneath is actually a "plant horror" boss rusher with twin stick melee controls, unlockable "Instinct" abilities and one-hit deaths.

In a gift to headline writers everywhere, the developers, four-person Gardenfiend Games, are calling it "Hollow Knight meets Titan Souls", and who am I to deny them? It's got one of those "painterly" art styles, too, though other words come to mind, such as "rotted" and "unhallowed" and "manky". It's out on 6th September. Find a trailer nested below this paragraph like a venus flytrap poised to clamp around your fingers.

Okay, listen. The Roads To Power expansion coming to Crusader Kings III is focusing on the Byzantine Empire. But forget that. Because today developers Paradox revealed the ins and outs of another feature from the DLC that is way more exciting than some fusty old Greeks. It's called "landless adventurers" and it'll let you play as disgraced dirtbag travelling the world in a sort of medieval gig economy. You'll be making camp, gathering followers, taking random jobs from local rulers, and catching infectious diseases as you try to travel safely through war-torn regions. It sounds amazing.

I don't play much Call Of Duty any more. My feelings about the series have settled back from self-righteous fury over its Pentagon-sponsored war-fellating to a quieter, regretful sense that there have maybe been enough Call Of Duty games now, and that it would be nice if we could fill that infamous late October/early November release slot with, I don't know, games about witches instead, or maybe just turn it into a public holiday and spend the week lying on a mattress regarding the ceiling. Still: I've skinned and filleted enough COD in my time to know that Black Ops 6's new "omnimovement" system is going to ruffle as many feathers as it smooths. The short version is that it turns you into Max Payne.

In his Vampire Survivors review, Matt Cox described the game as something he could play with "one hand in a packet of crisps". I think about this quite often, actually, as someone whose largely offline friends (or Fortnite/FIFA pals) ask me to recommend them a game that's good or interesting. Show them something popular like Elden Ring and, despite its grandeur, it might prove too much in all facets. But Vampire Survivors? It's an easy sell: simple, digestible, ridiculous value.

All of this is to say, One BTN Bosses is from the same school of the easy sell. You can fight bosses with one hand in a packet of pickled onion Space Raiders, after all.

You're dead at the start of rhythm-combat RPG Nocturne, just arrived in some sort of afterlife waiting room after the apparent extinction of humanity. You get your bearings, and you soon meet up with another, only slightly irritating, small child. His name is Kimothy, which sounds like something you'd only say as a joke to annoy friends named Kim, and then only once because it would be stupid to say it again. It's fine! Leaves flutter, rays of sun cavort through trees, and the music is utterly gorgeous. The game opens on twinkly piano and mournful strings, infused with a good dose of stirring JRPG whimsy, and soon transforms into whatever the genre of music is called that makes you want to immediately go on a massive adventure. Potion-punk. Slime-swing. Limit breakcore etc.

Is early adoption a chump's game? I dunno about that, though between the Asus ROG Ally X and the Steam Deck OLED, those who stayed their hand on their earlier handheld gaming PC counterparts do have a couple of quality second-genners to choose from. Valve's effort manages to wring multiple performance, design, and battery life improvements out of its new display, while the ROG Ally X makes similar upgrades with a bigger-yet-better take on the original ROG Ally.

The only thing to do, clearly, is make them fight. It's probably in the Irish Code Duello or something: "Should one portable games box impugn another's honour by releasing shortly after it, satisfaction must be claimed through a comparison article." My hands are bound here, folks, though if you yourself have been playing the waiting game on a handheld purchase, perhaps this little head-to-head can help you pick the right one.

Cinematic platformer Bionic Bay opens on a scene of a very large egg doing very bad things - easily my third favourite genre of speculative fiction. You awake to a world of tree trunks that twist like viscera and corroded contraptions powered by luminous goop that's stored in the balls, uh, big glass orbs. A beam of light soon fills your character with newfound vigour, which is a nice moment of triumph in what otherwise feels like a deeply oppressive rust pit, all unsteady platforms and jagged pipes.

It doesn't take long before you start spotting examples of the reason Bionic Bay went viral earlier this week. Above your head hangs a painstakingly detailed mass of vents and cables, looming lifelike with dust and shadow and history. I stood and stared because I'd seen how the sausage was made, but I like to think I would have lingered longer than usual anyway. It really is just that impressive.

River City Girls 2 Double Dragon Billy and Jimmy DLC Showcased

Back in April 2024, WayForward announced Double Dragon River City Girls 2 DLC that would make Billy and Jimmy Lee playable. Now there's a new gameplay trailer that shows how the two characters will work in the title and highlights some of the free content everyone will get alongside their debut. [Thanks, IGN!]

The River City Girls 2 trailer begins with the character select screen. It gives us a chance to see some stats, which are identical. Both have 15 ST, 7 SP, 5 AT, 4 AG, 3 Wp, and 3 LK. From there, we get to see the two actually get into fights. These are interspersed with black and white comic segments of the brothers. (As a reminder, everyone will get a free Double Dragon motion comic as part of the free update released alongside the add-on.) Some of the ensuing footage shows them fighting Marion and shopping at the Seasons Beatings store.

Here's the full River City Girls 2 Billy and Jimmy DLC gameplay trailer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_n-PC0tAzI

We already had one playable Double Dragon character in River City Girls 2 ahead of this DLC announcement. Marian Kelly showed up in the game at launch. She first debuted as a cameo character in the first installment, as she was a shop clerk you could buy accessories if you stopped by Swaggage. Of course, Billy and Jimmy are also already there as heads of in-game Dojos if you go to Crosstown or Ocean Heights.

River City Girls 2 is available on the PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and its Double Dragon Jimmy and Billy DLC will drop in 2024.

Fields of Mistria Early Access Roadmap Major Update Involves Romance

NPC Studio shared the first Fields of Mistria roadmap for 2024, and it confirmed the first major update will add more content for romance options. However, it won't appear until sometime in Q4 2024.

The new romance update for Fields of Mistria won't add marriage to the game just yet, but it will allow you to get closer to the bachelors and bachelorettes. There will be a six-heart event for all characters available. This also means that the current cap on affection levels, which is four hearts, will be increased by two. Other NPCs will also have more to say once that patch arrives.

The rest of the adjustments involved additional level caps going up and other new features. The town's renown level cap will go up by 20, which means more requests and rewards tied to it. Your skill caps will also go from 30 to 45.

The other additions in the Q4 2024 first major Fields of Mistria update involve additional content for the game. You'll be able to upgrade and decorate your home more. Your avatars and animals will get new accessories and outfits too. A second festival will be held in town. More enemies will be around, which means new drops from them. Also, more skill perks will show up.

Here's the official Fields of Mistria roadmap as of August 2024, and it confirms that additional romance related additions include 8 and 10-heart events and relationship caps, as well as opportunities to marry and raise a family with the bachelors and bachelorettes.

https://twitter.com/FieldsofMistria/status/1820869213600288853

Fields of Mistria is available in early access for the PC via Steam, and it is expected to remain in this state for about a year.

Monster Hunter Wilds Heavy Bowgun

Capcom released a new overview video for Monster Hunter Wilds, and this time the focus is on the Heavy Bowgun weapon. As well as the new Focus Mode mechanic, Heavy Bowguns will get access to a new Ignition Mode and what appears to be Rapid Fire ammunition.

The focus of the video is on the new Ignition Mode that appears to be an evolution of the Special Ammo system from previous Monster Hunter games. Essentially, Heavy Bowgun users will have an energy meter that fills over time. When landing hits, that can be expended in Ignition Mode to fire special ammo types. Some of these ammo types include a gatling barrage and a large, single shot explosive similar to the Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe ammunitions available before. Additionally, Monster Hunter veterans may have noticed the Heavy Bowgun using what appears to be Rapid Fire ammunition, a burst-style ammunition that was previously exclusive to the Light Bowgun variant.

You can get a look at the Monster Hunter Wilds Heavy Bowgun Overview below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcjGwUo8vjE

Capcom previously released two other videos overviewing the Greatsword weapon type and the new Focus Mode mechanic. Meanwhile, last month the company unveiled a life sized statue of a hunter riding a Seikret bird that was on display at the series' 20th anniversary exhibition in Tokyo, Japan.

Monster Hunter Wilds is expected to launch sometime in 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The announcement for the Dawntrail: Final Fantasy XIV Original Soundtrack didn't include a full track listing of songs. Square Enix noted 66 will appear on it. Rock Howard in Fatal Fury City of the Wolves

SNK has published a new individual character trailer starring Rock Howard in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves on its YouTube channel. People can now see what kind of attacks and combos can be unleashed when they play as the son of Geese Howard.

Rock Howard was one of the very first characters revealed in SNK's initial teaser at EVO 2023, along with Terry Bogard. However, these early-revealed characters have still yet to get their own individual trailers unlike those announced later, such as Billy Kane, B. Jenet, and Marco Rodrigues. The individual trailers let prospective players know more about the combo attacks each character can unleash.

The company uploaded the trailer in two different versions, as the game will support Japanese and English voiceovers. Yuma Uchida will provide Rock Howard's Japanese voiceover:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJbsc3dd9ds

And here is the English voiceover version of the trailer, with Griffin Puatu providing the voices:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foWpZB6goHU

Rock Howard made his overall debut in the storyline of the 1995 entry Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory. However, players could only play as him starting from the 1999 title Garou: Mark of the Wolves, which was also the latest Fatal Fury series entry before City of the Wolves.

SNK also added Rock as a playable character in several entries in The King of Fighters series including KOF XIV and KOF XV. He appeared as a DLC character in both of the series' latest two mainline entries.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, and PC in early 2025.
