Siliconera Monday, August 12, 2024 8:00 PM Pokemon Voice Actress Rachael Lillis Died       Rachael Lillis, the voice actress for Misty and Jessie in the original Pokemon English dub, died on August 10, 2024. She was 46 years old and passed away from breast cancer. Eric Stuart, who'd voiced Brock and James in the English Pokemon dub, posted a message from Veronica Taylor (who played Ash) sharing the news. He also gave a tribute, calling her his partner in comedic crime and telling people to watch the original Pokemon dub to celebrate her life. Veronica's message discussed Rachael's work in life, as well as the support people showed her during her battle with cancer. Lillis's sister created a GoFundMe campaign for her in May 2024. The Pokemon Twitter account also posted a memorial message. The message stated that her talent and work on the animated series brought the characters to life, and that people will remember her for generations to come. It ends with thoughts and condolences for her friends and family. Aside from her roles as Misty and Jessie, she's voiced several species of Pokemon over the course of the anime and game series. She was Jigglypuff, Goldeen, Torchic, Beautifly, and Vulpix. Lillis was also Cocco in Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission, Princess Charlotte in Berserk, and Utena in Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie. As a note, Tomoko Kawakami, the Japanese voice actress for Utena, also died of cancer. She had ovarian cancer and died in 2011 at the age of 41. This time, the additions mainly involve two new Ambuscade monsters and a Kupon A-AGK reward. The big August 2024 version update for Final Fantasy XI involves Ambuscade, Records of Eminence, and both items and the Porter Moogle. In addition to us seeing the Morbol cafe during the Green Festival and Shining Bless Morbol idol group during Sunbreeze Festival, we'll see Morbols in the Ambuscade as well. They'll be joined by Meebles opponents. There will be new monthly objectives in the Records, while some new items will be available and able to be transported by Porter Moogles. As for the Final Fantasy XI August 2024 login campaign, people can get points until September 4, 2024. The highlighted item is the Kupon A-AGK for 500 points. However, other notable rewards include the 1,500 point Red Pondweed, Savory Shank, or Sweet Tea, the 1,000 Mog Patio Plans, the 1,000 point Facility Ring, the 750 point Musichinery Kit, the 750 point Melodious Plans, and the 300 point Moogle Bed. In addition to the standard August 2024 version update and login campaign, there are two summer events running in Final Fantasy XI at the moment. Both the Green Festival and Sunbreeze Festival are live. Those are being held until August 31, 2024. The new remake series was originally announced at Jump Festa 2024 on December 17, 2023, and it will appear on the Netflix streaming service sometime in the future. As previously shared, the upcoming remake will adapt the manga from the very beginning of the East Blue saga. WIT Studio, known for their work on Attack on Titan and Spy x Family, will be in charge of animating the new show. During the recent One Piece Day 2024 event held in Japan on August 10-11, 2024, WIT Studio revealed the staff members involved in the new The One Piece anime remake. Attack on Titan Director Masashi Koizuka will be in charge of the new The One Piece anime series, with Hideaki Abe acting as co-director. Taku Kishimoto will be in charge of series composition, with both Kyoji Asano and Takatoshi Honda will act as character designers and chief animation directors. Meanwhile, Yasuhiro Kajino will handle creature design and storyboarding. Eri Taguchi will be prop designer, while Ken Imaizumi and Shuhei Fukuda will be action animators. Tomonori Kuroda will be the art director, and Ryoma Kawamura will be the animation producer. Furthermore, a 20-minute-long staff interview video with the members of WIT Studio appeared. The new Hololive Tamagotchi models costs 7,700 yen (or about $52.32) each, and they are now available to pre-order until September 4, 2024. The new Tamagotchi devices are expected to release in Japan sometime in February 2025. The new toys are based on the Tamagotchi nano colorful model, with full color screen displays. Aside from the Tamagotchi device itself, the new Hololive Fantasy devices come packaged with a plush of the respective Vtuber and a charging cable. Siliconera Monday, August 12, 2024 5:00 PM Dr. Stone Final Season to Start Airing in 2025       The final season of Dr. Stone, Dr. Stone Science Future, will start airing in 2025. There will be three cours in this season. There's not much information on the final season apart from the release window and a key visual. The key visual depicts Senku as a child and an adult looking up at the moon. Next to it, there's a quote from Senku stating that they're going to go to the moon. This final season will cover the Moon Mission Arc, which is the only arc in the Stone to Space Saga. As it says on the tin, it's a story arc mostly focusing on their space mission. Dr. Stone is a Japanese manga series that started in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2017 and ended in 2022. In total, there are 27 tankobon volumes. It follows the story of a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity was petrified for almost 4000 years. After they wake up, they're basically in the Stone Age again. Fortunately, protagonist Senku Ishigami is a scientific genius who is able to reinvent basic necessities and free other petrified people. His main goal is to build a new scientific civilization, though some people oppose this. Dr. Stone Science Future, the final season of the show, will begin airing some time in 2025. The title of the game is Chiikawa Pocket, or Chiipoke for short. [Thanks, 4Gamer!] You can pre-register via the Apple Store and the Play Store. The concept of the game is that you'll always have Chiikawa with you as you go about your daily life. Things you'll be able to experience in the game include mini-games (which will be packed full of Chiikawa's unique worldview), item collection, home page customization, costume collecting, and exterminating enemies. Though the characters are adorable little things that don't look out of place when next to Sanrio mascots, the story feels very different from other shows in the "cute critter doing cute critter things" genre. For example, some stories deal with the characters smashing their brethren with a hammer after they were brainwashed and petrified. Others deal with characters taking an exam together, but only one of them passes. Chiikawa Pocket is in development for mobile devices. Siliconera Monday, August 12, 2024 4:00 PM Giant Papier-Mache Frieren Sculpture Appeared in Japan       The official Frieren X (formerly known as Twitter) account has posted a giant Frieren sculpture descending upon the citizens of Asagaya. It was part of the Asagaya Tanabata Festival. The giant Frieren sculpture looks like it's made of paper, as if someone had folded a giant Frieren and then taped the individual parts together. It it was part of the Tanabata Festival, it's likely papier-mâché. She's even holding her staff, leading one reply to comment that this piece of artwork depicts Frieren leaping down from the ceiling to attack a hapless victim. Another commenter joked that the first Virtua Fighter is very stylish as a reference to the somewhat boxy look of the sculpture. Frieren is the main and titular character of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. It is a very popular manga and anime series. As of June 2024, there are over 22 million copies in circulation, and it won several awards since it started serialization in 2020. It follows the story of Frieren, an elven mage who was part of a party that defeated the Demon King. Fifty years later, she returns from a journey to find that the world and her companions have changed. Filled with regret after the hero Himmel died, Frieren decides to travel to the resting place of souls to see Himmel again and bid him a true farewell. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is available on Crunchyroll and Viz Media has licensed the manga for North America. Siliconera Monday, August 12, 2024 3:00 PM Review: Muv-Luv Remastered Switch Version Is a Great Place to Start       Getting into the Muv-Luv series is a commitment. One that's certainly easier now than it was years ago when it was a Japan-exclusive series, for sure. But still. You need to be ready to get invested. Fortunately, the Muv-Luv Remastered Switch release really does feel like the best and easiest way to get into the series, as well as enjoy reading through Takeru, Sumika, and Meiya's story. Editor's Note: There will be no Muv-Luv Unlimited spoilers in this Muv-Luv Remastered Switch review. Now, right away the Muv-Luv Remastered Switch release makes it easy to get into the adventure, as you get to make a choice immediately after starting. You can jump right into Muv-Luv Unlimited, rather than playing Extra first. You shouldn't, but you can. Considering Extra is the weaker of the two stories, I don't blame you if you just look up some details on characters and go with the second part first, but there is some important character development in the initial part. Screenshot by Siliconera With Muv-Luv Extra, you get to experience normal school life for Takeru Shirogane. He's always been close to Sumika Kagami, his childhood friend. So close that, as his neighbor, she just comes in every day to his room to wake him up. However, one day he wakes up to find Meiya Mitsurugi in his room and bed. As you can imagine, this means a whole love triangle begins as Meiya insists she's meant to marry Takeru and Sumika starts wondering about what she really wants. However, it isn't just a love triangle, of course, as you can also choose to go for Chizuru, Miki, or Kei as you play. Muv-Luv Extra in Remastered is, in general, fine Switch visual novel. It feels like a very typical dating sim. Characters can feel like they belong to established tropes like elegant rich girl or childhood best friend. Takeru is often an immature, perverted teenager, which may make it more difficult to connect with him at the start. The best part of it, especially in this remaster, comes down to the production values. Every character has multiple sprites. They're moving around the screen and dynamic, to give a sense of motion and energy you might not typically experience in a visual novel. Even if the general concept might feel ordinary at the start, the extra effort put into those elements helps a lot. Screenshot by Siliconera Muv-Luv Unlimited is when the Remastered Switch release and series gets interesting. It begins with Takeru back at the first day of Muv-Luv Extra, except he finds he is in a whole different world and timeline. Here, the BETA aliens invaded and everyone fought back. Only his house is standing when he wakes up in bed. What's left of humanity fights back in giant mechs and puts forth plans to try and salvage some sort of life for themselves. However, some of the people he knew and loved from the original adventure are back. It's tone is quite different, given the sci-fi approach and "after the apocalypse" nature of things. However, there there is still a bit of a romance option to it, depending on your choices. It isn't a dating sim in the same way Extra is, but you can earn endings with characters.  In this Switch Remastered release, it's basically Muv-Luv Unlimited that makes Extra worth playing. The differences between the characters we meet in the original storyline, then what they are like in the second part, help provide a better perspective of what's going on and who they are. One informs the other, and it grants the player a better understanding and appreciation. Screenshot by Siliconera Likewise, Muv-Luv Unlimited is essentially a redemption for Takeru. There's such personal growth and development as we see what this young man experiences. Getting to see what his life was like, what his new story entails, and how he reacts as a result is fascinating. It's a sense of culminating maturity that we get to see carried forth even further. There's not the genuine pay-off for everything yet. (That's saved for Muv-Luv Alternative!) However, there's still something there. Also, as expected, the production qualities in Muv-Luv Unlimited in Remastered on the Switch remain as high as in Extra. The game looks great on the system. It's especially fun in handheld mode. The perspective and resolution looks good. The displays are dynamic. It's easy to make quick saves, jump around to past text, and keep track of everything going on. The audio quality is also quite good, which gets to be important as the drama ramps up in the second part of the story. Muv-Luv Remastered, as a whole, sets up a foundation for one of the most intriguing visual novels to come out of Japan. This means that what you're experiencing is happening for a reason. Muv-Luv Extra might feel a bit trope-heavy and as though the dynamic nature of character portraits and movements are the only thing setting it apart, due to it laying groundwork regarding characters. Muv-Luv Unlimited is when it starts getting interesting and we get into the meat of things, due to the new mysteries being introduced and way what we learned in the first game shapes the lives of characters like Takeru and Meiya. Put together in one package with Muv-Luv Remastered, and we get a solid start to Age's story. Muv-Luv Remastered is available for the Nintendo Switch. In terms of pre-registration milestones, we can see what we get for 100,000 to 200,000 sign-ups. For in-game rewards, in the order of release, people will be able to get avatars with black cat ears for Subaru, Emilia, Rem, and Ram. As for real-world rewards, we only know that after 100,000 people pre-register, one lucky person will receive an entire set of the comics. Other prizes include artbooks and a Blu-Ray Box. Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World is a popular light novel series, with multiple adaptations including an anime series and another now-defunt mobile title. It follows Subaru Natsuki, a NEET who is isekai'ed to a fantasy world. He dies soon after arriving and finds out that he has the power to turn back time after his death. In order to help Emilia, a half-elf he meets in this new world, become queen, he uses his power to assist her despite the pain of dying and coming back. Siliconera Monday, August 12, 2024 1:30 PM Playable Monster Hunter Wilds Demo at PAX West, Gamescom       Capcom further laid out its Monster Hunter Wilds demo plans, confirming it will be playable at both PAX West and gamescom 2024. The next new trailer will also appear at Opening Night Live on August 20, 2024.  Of course, the gamescom 2024 Monster Hunter Wilds demo will appear first, due to that being the next major event. That runs August 21-25, 2024, with people in Cologne, Germany able to attend. That event is open to the public between August 22-25, 2024, as the first day is limited to industry members only. PAX West 2024 almost immediately follows it, as it runs August 30, 2024 through September 2, 2024. While the game will also be playable at TwitchCon 2024, which is September 20-22, 2024, that's only possible if someone makes an appointment and is more exclusive. Capcom also noted a bonus for people who give the playable build of Monster Hunter Wilds a chance at PAX West 2024. Those who test it out will get a Forbidden Lands Research Commission pin. At the moment, ahead of crowdfunding, some initial images, a teaser trailer, a Discord server, and a social media account opened. It seems Muv-Luv Tactics will be set in the series' universe and involve players using the Senjutsuki Tactical Surface Fighter mechs to fight BETA. A few pieces of initial art also appeared showing some of the TSF units that will apparently appear in the game. One of them is the Type-00 Takemikazuchi 00R model used by Meiya Mitsurugi in the Muv-Luv series. Another looks like the EF-2000 Typhon, in particular the Zerberus model. Her next stream will be on YouTube at 5am PT/8am ET/2pm CET on August 14, 2024. Kotoka announced she'd be cutting back on streaming in February 2024. She cited a desire to prioritize her mental health at the time. She did release some YouTube Shorts of her singing and rapping in the months between then. However, her last stream on her channel was a chocolate fountain handcam on February 12, 2024. One of the most notable activities Kotoka Torahime participated in while on break was the annual Nijisanji Koshien 2024 event alongside other Anycolor Vtubers. That involved the game Powerful Pro Baseball 2022. She was part of the Nijisanji High School team alongside fellow Vtubers like Shiina Yuika, Doppio Dropscythe, and Millie Parfait. She was lauded for her pitching performance during the games. This comes ahead of the departure of one of her genmates. She is part of XSOLIEL alongside Hex Haywire. He will graduate on August 23, 2024. That's the second member of the group to depart. Previously, Anycolor terminated Zaion LanZa. She served as one of Ichigo's mentors in the series, and before the events of the series served as a Gotei 13 captain like Byakuya Kuchiki. The video begins by reminding people Yoruichi is known as the Flash Master in the series. It then shows a typical introduction for her before a fight begins. From there, it focuses on some of her specific attacks. First, we get to see her Anken/Flash Breaker Signature Move. She performs Anken if you tap the button, and Flash Breaker if you hold it down to counter an opponent. Her two Spiritual Pressure Moves shown are Bakko and Oboro Neko. Her Awakening is highlighted after that and shows her using Shunko to fight back even faster than before. Her cat form never appears in the video. The trailer for the newly remastered game will also be available to view in the mobile game. The new craft essence is a four-star rarity one, and it increases the Master EXP earned when clearing a quest by 50 while equipped. You can earn the commemorative essence by completing a new quest available via the Chaldea Gate, as long as you have cleared Node 1 of Section 3 in the first singularity of the game. The quest will be available until August 14, 2024. This isn't the only reference to Fate/stay Night Remastered in FGO. Additionally, a new three-star command code appeared in the Mana Prism exchange shop. Also, using certain Fate/stay night characters as your support will double the amount of Friend Points earned from battles. Siliconera Monday, August 12, 2024 10:30 AM Krafton Picks Up Tango Gameworks Staff and Hi-Fi Rush       Krafton, a company known for games like PUBGand The Callisto Protocol, announced that it picked up both the Tango Gameworks staff and the IP Hi-Fi Rush. This follows Microsoft's decision to shutter it and Arkane Austin in May 2024. Krafton didn't announce any specifics about the acquisition. So we don't know how many members of the Tango Gameworks staff will return or any specific individuals. We also don't know what will happen with the Hi-Fi Rush IP going forward. Krafton only confirmed that it owns it.  The company did confirm that title and other games from the developer, such as The Evil Within, its sequel, and Ghostwire Tokyo, will not be delisted. While it specifically mentioned it owns the Hi-Fi Rush IP now, it did not mention if this purchase also means it owns the other two IPs and could in turn build on those series going forward. The Evil Within can be found on the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC, while The Evil Within 2 is on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Ghostwire Tokyo is out on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. There is no exact start date for the event, with the official key art and first video only noting it is "coming soon." First, here's the key art for the NIKKE event that features five Evangelion characters. From left to right, we can see Pen Pen, Misato Katsuragi, Mari Makinami Illustrious, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Shikinami Langley. Given Mari's appearance, this seems to be based on the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. She's expected to appear in 1.2 alongside Caesar King. The first part of the Burnice White reveal featured art for the Zenless Zone Zero character and "comments" from other Agents discussing her. She's an Anomaly kind of character, like fellow faction member Piper Wheel. She also deals Fire damage when she attacks. It gives us a chance to hear her English voice and confirms she's a mixologist. Siliconera Monday, August 12, 2024 9:00 AM Preview: Warhammer 40K: Speed Freeks Is a Brief, Loud, Blast       Boomdakka Snazzwagon. Rukkatrukk Squigbuggy. Deffkilla Wartrike. These are all real names for Ork vehicles, and Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks lets you drive all of them. The game does a commendable job of capturing that rough whimsy of 40K's resident comic relief faction, and the game is a blast in short bursts. My only worry is how much longevity it will have, especially considering its free-to-play model. While more of a vehicle deathmatch than a racing game, Speed Freeks nontheless puts you behind the wheel of one of several cobbled-together warmachines each with its own setup of boosts and weaponry. And there's a decent spread of roles too, from short range armor-shredders to slow-but-powerful tanks (looted from some other species, naturally) that can fire missiles guided by a little goblin riding on top. My favorite was the Grot Mega Tank, a huge bruiser of a vehicle built like a battleship and with a front-mounted scoop for flipping anyone foolish enough to get close. Screenshot by Siliconera Each vehicle has a short spread of abilities, usually a primary fire, a secondary, a dash and then something else. The two tank classes trade their dash for a heal-over-time, but generally they all stick to this formula. Additionally, some trukks in Speed Freeks have a fixed weapon mounting or turret angle limitation that can affect your firepower. For example, the ship-like Mega Tank mentioned earlier has it's turrets mounted lengthways so you'll need to align yourself broadside-style to get them all firing at once. It's a nice little extra consideration to learn in order to get the most out of your vehicle. Matches of Speed Freeks are played in either Deff Rally or Kill Konvoy modes. Rather than a straight race, Deff Rally is a rush to get to a capture point and get kills while holding it, repeating with different locations before a final race to the finish. Meanwhile, Kill Konvoy has your team escorting an enormous Stompa, the ork interpretation of a super-heavy mech, which will be racing against its enemy counterpart. Kills speed it up, but you can also grab bombs from the field and drive them in to the opposing Stompa to stun it briefly. Screenshot by Siliconera A special shout-out has to be made for the maps themselves, which are surprisingly pretty for being mostly empty wasteland. I was especially fond of the Ice level that had a titanic imperial city looming in the background, the imposing gothic construction making for a lovely contrast to the Ork shanties. Fighter jets cruise overhead as stray salvoes litter the sky, with the hilarious implication that all these junkyard derbies are occuring as the rest of the planet is embroiled in a fight for survival. There are a few missed opportunities, however. Despite the ramshackle nature of Ork construction lending itself perfectly to 'kustomizin', the options are pretty lacking outside of a nice array of colors. Similarly, if any game warranted a Burnout-style crash and destruction system, it's Speed Freeks, but other than the Mega Tank's scoop I never felt like crashing into someone was ever much of an advantage unless you were knocking them into a rock or something. While it's nice that the offerings are so vestigial as to be unobtrustive, I also can't really see why anyone would spend money unless it's for one of the two slightly annoying-to-unlock vehicles. And once you have unlocked each vehicle there wasn't really anything compelling me to go complete challenges. You can unlock a few skulls or spikes to put on your trukk of choice, but nothing that gave me any motivation to grind for. Still, if you're looking for something as simple as it is loud, Speed Freeks offers fun in spades. And if you're someone tired of the endless progression grind of live service games, some of these negatives might actually be bonuses for you. I do worry how long it can sustain itself, but as a free-to-play game it's definetly worth giving a go if your craving some vehicular carnage.
