I had to give up whole days of biking in the desert with my brother and playing video games, sure, but the real problem was school supplies. My poor mom had to track down a huge list of supplies the school said we needed, from pencils and paper to expensive binders and calculators. Sure, back to school sales took the sting out of these mandatory purchases, but it was often a real stretch to get everything I needed, and I'd need to make friends quickly to borrow anything I didn't manage to come to school with. That's why I was particularly amused, a decade and a bit later, to find out that Ebay is offering 20% off back to school purchases in the US, and that category of products includes a $999 LG OLED gaming monitor. Even for a university student, that's one heck of an upgrade for the new school year - but a darn good deal if you're considering this kind of ultra-premium gaming monitor. |

August 1st is Water Day in Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism appointed Vaporeon ambassador for Water Day in 2023. This water-type Pokemon is promoting public understanding of the value of clean water throughout the entirety of Water Week. From August 1-7, 2023, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism plans to hold educational events across Japan in cooperation with related ministries, agencies and prefectures. This will all happen with Vaporeon attending events as a mascot. Water Day is a Japanese national holiday dedicated to promoting water conservation and raising awareness of the finite nature of water resources and the importance of water resource development. On Water Day and during Water Week, the Japanese national government, local governments, businesses and private organizations all cooperate to help spread the importance of maintaining clean, healthy water each year. This year, Vaporeon acting as an ambassador and mascot is intended to help deepen the interest in water conservation in the general public. It uses the same Pokemon mascot costume as other past promotional events. Various facilities across Japan will also be lit up with blue lights to commemorate Water Day. It's a new month, which means a new FFVII calendar from Square Enix for August 2023. The Japanese Twitter account consistently releases new ones regularly for us to use on our computers and mobile devices. This month's is a piece of FFVII Remake art with Cloud on the Hardy-Daytona motorcycle he uses throughout the series. Here's a gallery showing both of the August 2023 FFVII calendars with Cloud. August 11, 2023 is highlighted. This is because that's Cloud's birthday. It could also explain why he is the featured character for the month. However, Tifa was not the featured character in May 2023, which is the month in which her birthday falls. Instead, Aerith appeared on that calendar. As a reminder, Cloud is following Zack. The July 2023 calendar was a summer-themed one. It featured Zack as he appeared in Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion. In it, we could see him from behind as he was on the beach on vacation at Costa Del Sol. While he got to see some members of the Turks, like Cissnei, there during the game, he was the only character to appear in that calendar image. Final Fantasy VII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will arrive on the PS5 in early 2024. There are a lot of farming and life sims on the Switch, so much so that a game like Picontier could easily fly under the radar. It probably doesn't help that we first heard about it back in 2016, but it's never gotten tons of attention. Which is a shame, because it's a novel experience with an unexpected sort of sort surrounding it, and more people should really give it a chance. Picontier begins with Pico's grandfather, a scientist named Jeda, heading to the island with them. After doing some work in a lab there, he instructs Pico to go to sleep. So we watch as our avatar heads into a pod and sleeps for an unspecified amount of time. Upon waking, an AI being known as Aila is there to greet us and guide us toward a new life dedicated to farming end exploring the island. However, something seems a bit off. The other villagers all seem to have woken up at the same time, it seems all the food spoiled, there's a huge hole in one person's house-slash-safe, and there are remnants of blockades and things like tanks with vines growing over them around the area. What I really like is how there are little quality of life touches and it's so simple to keep moving forward in Picontier when playing this farming sim and RPG on the Switch. You can toggle a setting to show exactly how many days it takes for certain crops to grow. Expanding your inventory, shipping box, and storage box space is all done via money, with early upgrades being fairly affordable. It's easy to fall into a pace of breaking boxes and gathering items from portions of the map you unlocked so you can continue to craft or earn more money. Your neighbors might not have a lot of depth or things to say, but they're often entertaining enough and instead offer new material or recipe rewards that make the interactions with them worthwhile. The only thing I wish Picontier did a bit better is explain things. For example, getting chickens for the first time is a good example. After completing certain mainline quests, you get a mini drone that lets you acquire animals. You then also get access to an item to befriend wild chickens. However, I didn't catch that I'd then need to craft that item to do so until I went into the workbench in my house next, which ended up being two in-game days later. Also, it never tells you that hey, you'll need to progress the main quest before the orbs blocking exploration to certain areas of the island will be removed, which might frustrate someone as they try to find a way to do more. Still, I really loved playing Picontier on the Switch! It's a lot of fun, and it does a lot of streamlining that makes farming and exploring feel different than other life sims like Stardew Valley, Rune Factory, and Story of Seasons. The ambiance is interesting, as is knowing that something is off and "happened" while Pico was napping. The pacing could have been a bit different and equipment durability changed, but it's still worth people's time and attention. Picontier is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC. Persona 5 Tactica is an upcoming tactical role-playing game featuring a new storyline as well as new characters, and Atlus announced a premium trial event for Japan. It will provide participants the chance to experience the first two hours of the game before its scheduled release on November 17, 2023. The demo takes place in Tokyo on September 2-3, 2023. Applying to take part in the trial in advance is required before participating. The Persona 5 Tactica premium trial event will be held over two days. Each one will be divided into four sessions, with there being a morning session starting at 10am JST and an afternoon session at 2pm JST. Applications are accepted until August 6, 2023, 11:59pm JST. Winners will be notified by email from the domain【@atlus.co.jp】on August 9, 2023. Atlus accepts only one application per person. Also, applicants must be at least 18 years old to participate. Arc System Works announced a plush toy based on Roger, Bridget's bear from Guilty Gear. The plush toy is available from the company's storefront to pre-order now. It is set to release in Q3 2023. It's normally priced at $174.99, but is currently listed at the pre-order price of $149.99. The Roger plush takes its appearance from Guilty Gear Strive, featuring a special wash tag and a detailed zipper tag hanging from his neck. The plush features a "luxury exterior" fabric and custom stitching, along with a soft foam interior. It measures 18 inches tall while sitting, but it is 24 inches from head to toe. Roger is a bear that assists Bridget in battle in the Guilty Gear series. Despite being a plush toy, he is sentient and boasts a high degree of intelligence. Bridget herself appeared as a plush replica from Good Smile Company back in February 2023. It's not the only Bridget related merchandise to get a release since her inclusion in Guilty Gear Strive either. Good Smile Company also confirmed Pop-Up Parade and Nendoroid figures. Spiritale and Kotobukiya are also releasing figures based on her. Roger makes an appearance in many of them as well.
