The most shocking moment in Halo Infinite isn't about exploding a derelict ancient space station or accidentally awakening a once-slumbering threat. It's a brief exchange between two main characters, one that reveals the extent to which Halo protagonist Master Chief would go to fulfill what he sees as his immovable…

I'm not an accommodating video game critic. A game either sinks its hooks into me within the first hour, or I immediately bounce to something else.      Diablo 3's Darkening of Tristram event returns this week

Diablo's anniversary is only a few days away, and that means the Darkening of Tristram event is returning to Diablo 3. Blizzard reveals on the action-RPG's blog that the event will partially start on December 31 with the appearance of cultists before kicking off in full on January 3 when the portal opens.

The event is intended to be a homage to the earliest days of the Diablo series, with familiar foes, locales, and loot all included. The Darkening of Tristram begins with cultists causing trouble in Sanctuary. You'll hunt them down in the game's adventure mode for a few days while finding clues that'll eventually lead you to a portal into Tristram's past.

Once you hop through the portal, you'll swiftly notice an all-too-familiar cathedral from the original game. You'll be able to explore its depths to discover old enemies and recognisable items that have been reimagined in Diablo 3's engine. If you fancy a hit of nostalgia, you can head beneath the catacombs to face the dark lord himself.

American football legend John Madden has died

John Madden, the former American football coach whose voice and congenial broadcasting style made him synonymous with the National Football League, died unexpectedly December 28. Madden, who lent his name and likeness to the long-running series of football games published by EA, was 85 years old when he passed.

Madden's earliest claim to fame was his ten-year stint as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, which culminated in a 1976 win over Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI. During his time with the Raiders, he became the youngest coach to rack up 100 wins, which he accomplished by age 42. While he was head coach, the Raiders never completed a season without a winning record. Madden finished out his coaching career with a 103-32-7 regular season record, which remains the best winning percentage for a head coach in the modern NFL.

In 1984, EA Sports approached Madden, who had at that point retired from coaching due to occupational burnout and moved to colour commentary, to discuss endorsing its planned computer football game. Madden saw it as a chance to help people learn about football and was enthusiastic about the concept, but refused to lend his name to the original designs, which used six or seven players per team due to the technical limitations of home computers of the era.

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak news newcomerCapcom has remained relatively quiet regarding news of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, the upcoming expansion for the latest in the company's wildly popular Monster Hunter franchise. So far, Capcom has only put out a handful of teaser trailers and extra bits of information about the expansion's various aspects, such as the new and returning monsters. Considering that the PC version of the base Monster Hunter Rise game will finally come out next month, however, it would make sense for Capcom to unveil more substantial news about Sunbreak soon afterward. As it turns out, Capcom plans to do exactly this. Monster Hunter Rise Director Yoshitake Suzuki teased this upcoming news on the official Monster Hunter Twitter account. He thanked the playerbase for "warm comments" that the developers "received since the announcement of" Sunbreak, and he noted that the team will "share some great reveals with everyone next Spring."      FidelityFX Super Resolution 70 gamesAMD is planning for FidelityFX Super Resolution to be supported in over 70 titles. This was announced in a post from AMD's own community forum celebrating the milestone. It's certainly an impressive number of titles considering FidelityFX Super Resolution only came out six months ago. This is also great news for anyone who owns an AMD graphics card or for those who hope to get one soon. It's a massive increase compared to AMD's initial promises of support in 40 titles by the end of 2021. But, it's still a ways off from the number of games that support Nvidia's DLSS, which is featured in over 100 titles. DLSS has been around for longer to be fair, but it's still an interesting comparison nonetheless.   What can AMD's FSR do for you? Resolution upscaling tech is incredibly useful for most graphics cards when trying to render above 1440p with high frame rates to match. Sure, you can get high refresh 4K gameplay with some titles, but ...

The game is also being co-developed by Eighting, perhaps best known as the team behind one of the most beloved fighting games of all time, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Based on the insanely popular and long-running MMO Dungeon Fighter, the game is set to release in summer of 2022. The game just wrapped up its first (of hopefully several) open beta tests a few weeks ago. In this article we are going to break down everything we know about DNF Duel so far, and will update it as more information becomes available. Let's get started.   The roster The game currently has 11 confirmed characters. Based on the size of the character select screen during the beta, 24 seems to be a safe bet for how many fighters we'll ultimately see in the roster at launch. What is unique about DNF Duel is that, since the characters are based on MMO classes, they have...

AMD Radeon Super Resolution Image ScalingAMD is seemingly preparing another method of full-screen gaming resolution scaling with Radeon Super Resolution. Referred to as RSR in short, AMD's image scaling tech could help users gain better performance in certain titles. This information comes via a report from VideoCardz, which compiled these new details. As a rumor, this is mostly speculation for now, so remain skeptical until we get some kind of confirmation from AMD. If this turns out to be true, it could be exciting news for users who want to squeeze as much performance out of their rigs as possible. However, it likely won't replace AMD's current scaling technology, but rather act as a companion to it.   A enticing performance boost for AMD users Image scaling tech for PC gaming has improved significantly over the last few years. It has allowed aging PC's to keep up with modern rigs and technology. Nvidia first led the way with its own Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which AMD followed up...

Today's free game from Epic is a 2D Metroidvania with Dark Souls vibes

The festive season is here and full of cheer, so Epic Games is doing another round of daily free PC game giveaways. You've just missed out on the chance to get the Overcooked-style co-op game Moving Out, but that's okay because now we have another new game to get our mitts on.

You can now grab the 2D Soulslike Salt and Sanctuary from the usual Epic Games Store promotion page. It'll be there for one full day, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for.

The Metroidvania game initially launched to favourable reviews back in 2016. You find yourself in the quaking boots of a sailor who has been shipwrecked on an uncharted island. As you begin to explore, you'll eventually find labyrinthine passageways that lead to a "cursed realm of forgotten cities, blood-soaked dungeons, desecrated monuments, and the fallen lords they once celebrated", as developer Ska Studios describes. As you can imagine, the eldritch horror of it is very Dark Souls.

     The PCGamesN Awards 2021

You see those Game Awards the other night? Awful lot of trailers for an awards show if you ask us. We've got no trailers. None. Absolutely zilch. That's how you know we're serious about our awards. We've got the classics - accolades like Best Narrative and Best Ongoing Game - but we've also got a set of awards that are unique to PCGamesN.

We've got awards for thirst trapping, questionable business practises, languishing launches, and much more; the game industry is weird and wonderful, so our awards reflect that. From NFTs and ropey remasters to, er, Balan Wonderworld, this year's thrown more than its fair share of curveballs at us. So, while it's lovely to big up the best and brightest from the past 12 months, we can't truly move on from 2021 until we've recognised its missteps.

To come up with our winners, and in some cases the awards themselves, we all tumbled into a video call, poured out some bubbly, and bickered for an hour until we were mostly in agreement. It's not quite as scientific as the process we used for our GOTY 2021 nominations, but the boozy, Christmassy fog of late December is taking its toll, so this'll have to do.

Monster Hunter Rise devs are revealing more Sunbreak details next spring

While Monster Hunter Rise isn't coming to PC until January 22, 2022, we are getting the Sunbreak expansion at the same time as the Nintendo Switch folk to bring some parity to the platform release schedule. The content timeline has been a tad confusing to follow so far, so it's certainly appreciated.

We've only got the odd tease and trailer so far, but it looks like something more substantial is on the horizon. Developer Capcom has taken to Twitter to tell fans to "stay tuned" for more Sunbreak news when spring rolls around next year, which won't be long before the planned summer 2022 release window. Director Yoshitake Suzuki also tweets that the team is "gearing up to share some great reveals", so look forward to that.

"The entire development team is truly grateful for all the warm comments we've received since the announcement of Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak", says Suzuki. "We're gearing up to share some great reveals with everyone next Spring. Stay tuned!"

Dark Souls 2 community prepares for its annual newcomer co-op event

If, like me, you're someone who has always heard lots about the Dark Souls series but have yet to play them, now is the time to consider dipping a toe into their mysterious waters. The Dark Souls II community is gearing up for the annual Return to Drangelic event, wherein the RPG game's many fans create new characters to help newcomers get started.

This time, the Return to Drangelic will be held a month early - that's to make sure it doesn't overlap the Elden Ring release date, which is coming in February. From January 16 - 30, Dark Souls fans plan to start up new playthroughs of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin edition, for the express purpose of jumping into co-op sessions with new players or engaging in some early-game PvP, without all the end-level gear.

Old Soulsheads recommend using the Blue Acolyte mod with the Scholar of the First Sin edition of Dark Souls II for the event. The mod, which you can find on Nexus Mods. Blue Acolyte is actually a big collection of community patches and quality of life improvements for Dark Souls II, but for The Return to Drangelic event, it does two important things.

The best co-op games on PC in 2021

Co-op games can reward you like no other genre. Games offer up magic in lots of different guises, but working with a friend to achieve a goal is, arguably, where they really shine. So what are the titles that will really pull friends together and offer the best group-based thrills?

The best co-op games are the ones that let you explore new worlds with a buddy by your side, triumph over evil as a team, introduce a novice to the wonder of the medium, or simply beat each other over the head with questionable weaponry for kicks.

Single-player games can be a life-swallowing hoot, but those virtual victories taste all the sweeter when you share them with friends. Whether that's sitting next to your mate with a gamepad in hand or working together in beautiful harmony via voice chat, co-op games produce some of the best gaming moments around. So embrace companionship and say so long to playing solo. These are some of the very best co-op games for you to share with your favourite people.

Warzone Pacific Bug Sliding While MountedCall of Duty: Warzone Pacific transformed the battle royale as we know it. With a new Caldera map and the introduction of Vanguard weapons, fans were met with a fresh experience. However, since Warzone first launched back in 2020, the game has seen more than its fair share of bugs and glitches. In the past, we've experienced visual bugs, players having the ability to get inside of walls, and so much more. It appears that some bugs have stuck around, and travelled to the Pacific with us. The latest bug is allowing Warzone players to gain an infinite slide when mounting their gun. In Verdansk and Rebirth Island, sliding could only be achieved while your character was running. By now, everyone knows just how important sliding is and how it can be used to outmaneuver an opponent. Notably, the launch of Vanguard debuted a new mechanic that allows you to move while mounting your weapon. This has been taken to a new level as shown by a clip posted on Reddit.
