Today's free game from Epic is a 2D Metroidvania with Dark Souls vibes

The festive season is here and full of cheer, so Epic Games is doing another round of daily free PC game giveaways. You've just missed out on the chance to get the Overcooked-style co-op game Moving Out, but that's okay because now we have another new game to get our mitts on.

You can now grab the 2D Soulslike Salt and Sanctuary from the usual Epic Games Store promotion page. It'll be there for one full day, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for.

The Metroidvania game initially launched to favourable reviews back in 2016. You find yourself in the quaking boots of a sailor who has been shipwrecked on an uncharted island. As you begin to explore, you'll eventually find labyrinthine passageways that lead to a "cursed realm of forgotten cities, blood-soaked dungeons, desecrated monuments, and the fallen lords they once celebrated", as developer Ska Studios describes. As you can imagine, the eldritch horror of it is very Dark Souls.

     The PCGamesN Awards 2021

You see those Game Awards the other night? Awful lot of trailers for an awards show if you ask us. We've got no trailers. None. Absolutely zilch. That's how you know we're serious about our awards. We've got the classics - accolades like Best Narrative and Best Ongoing Game - but we've also got a set of awards that are unique to PCGamesN.

We've got awards for thirst trapping, questionable business practises, languishing launches, and much more; the game industry is weird and wonderful, so our awards reflect that. From NFTs and ropey remasters to, er, Balan Wonderworld, this year's thrown more than its fair share of curveballs at us. So, while it's lovely to big up the best and brightest from the past 12 months, we can't truly move on from 2021 until we've recognised its missteps.

To come up with our winners, and in some cases the awards themselves, we all tumbled into a video call, poured out some bubbly, and bickered for an hour until we were mostly in agreement. It's not quite as scientific as the process we used for our GOTY 2021 nominations, but the boozy, Christmassy fog of late December is taking its toll, so this'll have to do.

Monster Hunter Rise devs are revealing more Sunbreak details next spring

While Monster Hunter Rise isn't coming to PC until January 22, 2022, we are getting the Sunbreak expansion at the same time as the Nintendo Switch folk to bring some parity to the platform release schedule. The content timeline has been a tad confusing to follow so far, so it's certainly appreciated.

We've only got the odd tease and trailer so far, but it looks like something more substantial is on the horizon. Developer Capcom has taken to Twitter to tell fans to "stay tuned" for more Sunbreak news when spring rolls around next year, which won't be long before the planned summer 2022 release window. Director Yoshitake Suzuki also tweets that the team is "gearing up to share some great reveals", so look forward to that.

"The entire development team is truly grateful for all the warm comments we've received since the announcement of Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak", says Suzuki. "We're gearing up to share some great reveals with everyone next Spring. Stay tuned!"

Dark Souls 2 community prepares for its annual newcomer co-op event

If, like me, you're someone who has always heard lots about the Dark Souls series but have yet to play them, now is the time to consider dipping a toe into their mysterious waters. The Dark Souls II community is gearing up for the annual Return to Drangelic event, wherein the RPG game's many fans create new characters to help newcomers get started.

This time, the Return to Drangelic will be held a month early - that's to make sure it doesn't overlap the Elden Ring release date, which is coming in February. From January 16 - 30, Dark Souls fans plan to start up new playthroughs of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin edition, for the express purpose of jumping into co-op sessions with new players or engaging in some early-game PvP, without all the end-level gear.

Old Soulsheads recommend using the Blue Acolyte mod with the Scholar of the First Sin edition of Dark Souls II for the event. The mod, which you can find on Nexus Mods. Blue Acolyte is actually a big collection of community patches and quality of life improvements for Dark Souls II, but for The Return to Drangelic event, it does two important things.

The best co-op games on PC in 2021

Co-op games can reward you like no other genre. Games offer up magic in lots of different guises, but working with a friend to achieve a goal is, arguably, where they really shine. So what are the titles that will really pull friends together and offer the best group-based thrills?

The best co-op games are the ones that let you explore new worlds with a buddy by your side, triumph over evil as a team, introduce a novice to the wonder of the medium, or simply beat each other over the head with questionable weaponry for kicks.

Single-player games can be a life-swallowing hoot, but those virtual victories taste all the sweeter when you share them with friends. Whether that's sitting next to your mate with a gamepad in hand or working together in beautiful harmony via voice chat, co-op games produce some of the best gaming moments around. So embrace companionship and say so long to playing solo. These are some of the very best co-op games for you to share with your favourite people.

Warzone Pacific Bug Sliding While MountedCall of Duty: Warzone Pacific transformed the battle royale as we know it. With a new Caldera map and the introduction of Vanguard weapons, fans were met with a fresh experience. However, since Warzone first launched back in 2020, the game has seen more than its fair share of bugs and glitches. In the past, we've experienced visual bugs, players having the ability to get inside of walls, and so much more. It appears that some bugs have stuck around, and travelled to the Pacific with us. The latest bug is allowing Warzone players to gain an infinite slide when mounting their gun. In Verdansk and Rebirth Island, sliding could only be achieved while your character was running. By now, everyone knows just how important sliding is and how it can be used to outmaneuver an opponent. Notably, the launch of Vanguard debuted a new mechanic that allows you to move while mounting your weapon. This has been taken to a new level as shown by a clip posted on Reddit. Once the player mounted t...
