PCGamesN Wednesday, August 16, 2023 4:44 PM Baldur's Gate 3 is the best RPG game I've ever had the pleasure of playing, hands down. Larian Studios poured its heart and soul into the new Dungeons & Dragons game, creating a massive world with a ridiculous amount of player choice. PCGamesN Wednesday, August 16, 2023 4:30 PM Grand Theft Auto 6, GTA 5, and a Red Dead Redemption remaster are more than enough for Rockstar to focus on right now. But as we approach the 20th anniversary of the first game, and as I come to the end of replaying it, yet again, I'm craving the return of Manhunt. One of the greatest horror games ever made, it's not just scary, but shocking, smart, and legitimately squalid. There's something to be said for the current tide of triple-A games, which - compared to perhaps two or three decades ago - represent a culture that has seriously broadened its appeal. But Manhunt takes me back to a time when gaming was a counter-culture, and it felt like a willingness to experiment and plumb the depths of poor taste still existed among big-name developers. Bethesda may be returning to the age-old tradition of silent protagonists for Starfield, but that doesn't mean this highly anticipated game won't still feature a universe chock-full of colorful characters with voices to match. Back in 2021, Todd Howard revealed that over 300 Starfield voice actors had been hired to deliver 150,000 lines of dialogue. However, the studio has been remarkably tight-lipped on exactly who we can expect to hear on the Starfield release date as we journey across the Settled Systems. PCGamesN Wednesday, August 16, 2023 11:02 AM En Garde makes a fantastic first impression. Awash in cool blue and vibrant orange and inhabited by characters just as colorful to match, with a few early teases of the game's snappy combat, it's charming from the jump. It's easy to see why the game's demo, which went live during a recent Steam Next Fest, earned a fair bit of positive press. Following some light tutorialization and hardly any narrative table-setting, the game quickly sends you fencing your way through four brief episodes that each cover a different mini adventure of the swashbuckling Spanish rebel, Adalia de Volador. These consist of a series of combat encounters with some minor platforming wedged in for good measure. This all takes place in environments that, while visually striking, are functionally spartan, without any real branching paths or big surprises to speak of. Structurally, our En Garde review finds it to be an action game without any frills, which means it's able to hook you right away - a good thing for a game that clocks in a shade under 10 hours for a single playthrough. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 16, 2023 3:11 PM Hold onto your warp nacelles and hyperdrives, Starfield aficionados. The game's lead designer Emil Pagliarulo and lead quest designer Will Shen have hosted a Discord Q&A about Bethesda's forthcoming space colossus. Self-despising fool that I am, I sat up late at the office taking notes throughout - please accept a modest avalanche of new details. First off, a note on the subject of Starfield and housing. You can own property in "all the major cities in the game", according to Pagliarulo, with some dwellings being purchaseable and others, quest rewards. Building on the character creation systems of Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, the game features a "Kids Stuff" trait that generates parents based on your choice of custom character, allowing you to inflict your terrible physiognomical experiments on at least two other in-game entities. "No spoilers, but I think fans will really appreciate the actors we got to play those roles," Pagliarulo added. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 16, 2023 1:10 PM The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is many, magical things, but initially, at least, it is a card game in which you create your own cards. This takes the form of an MS Paint-esque editor in which you glue together a background, character assets and a collection of props, rotating, duplicating and altering the size of each asset with the mouse. Each asset soaks up a certain amount of arcane energy, divided between the four elements, which mean somewhat different things here than in the spell systems of other games. And each final design generates a different combination of meanings, some of them contradictory at a glance, all of them keys to the game's weird, whimsical and sorrowful wider universe. It seems an overly rudimentary system at first, though that's coming from the perspective of somebody who's reasonably familiar with Tarot, one of the game's chief influences, and partial to devising their own crummy decks of visual poetry cards. In particular, I grumped to myself about the limits on shrinking and enlarging: I wanted to fashion more abstract, prog-rock designs with faces in pixellated close-up, whereas The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood sort of defaults to "dude holding thing against landscape" setups familiar from the Rider-Waite Tarot. While there are pieces you can plug in and leave out as you see fit, the system also insists that you include certain props from each batch, and I'll admit to using the layer tool to hide unwanted skulls, floral wands and so forth behind other assets. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 16, 2023 12:30 PM The first game in the Opus series of visual novels (not to be confused with alchemy-themed puzzle machine game Opus Magnum), The Day We Found Earth, begins 14,000 years in the future, on a starship far from our familiar home planet. The humans in this far-flung future don't even remember their ancestral home - it's just a rumour, a fantasy. Yet that rumour is driving scientist Lisa, as it may be all that humanity has left. Players control a robot, Emeth, trained by the humans Lisa and Makoto to 'find' Earth, in the hope that reconnecting with the past will solve the issues facing humanity in the present. Opus may lean into the sci-fi aspects with its visuals and setting, but The Day We Found Earth and its sequels, 2018's Rocket Of Whispers and 2021's Echo Of Starsong (which Katharine absolutely loved), are ultimately story-driven games with a human core far warmer than the coldness of space. Sigono announced a new entry, Opus: Prism Peak, earlier this year. "They're narrative adventure titles that have heartfelt stories that always touch on themes of love and self-fulfilment," is what studio co-founder Scott Chen emphasises to me, as we start our conversation on the hectic floor of Bitsummit, Japan's largest indie games event. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 16, 2023 11:18 AM I haven't played Dungeons & Dragons before, and I don't know much about it besides the obvious. I know there's a dungeon master, or DM, who directs proceedings behind a cardboard shield. I know you lob some dice to determine the outcomes of an adventure that's contained in the heads of everyone at the roundtable. And that's about it. Baldur's Gate 3 is based on D&D's 5th edition and it's meant to honour its rules to the absolute tee. I'm sure it does! To be honest, though, I haven't exactly learned much about D&D by playing it. I don't even think of myself as playing D&D, instead I'm just playing an RPG whose complexity adds a nice mystery to proceedings. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 16, 2023 10:22 AM I've not played a huge amount of Dungeons & Dragons, but I get why those kids from Stranger Things won't stop banging on about it. It turns out all those librarians in the 90s were right: using your imagination really is cool and fun! Indeed, our ability to conjure fiction from the ether is fundamental to the ongoing success of D&D. Making up stories with friends is very much a good time, and if you get to kill a goblin or two in the process? Well. That's just gravy. Built upon the foundations of D&D's fifth edition ruleset, Baldur's Gate 3 attempts to translate the fundamentals of the game into digital form. But how successful is it at doing so? Can a video game - with all the rigidity that comes with the medium - replicate the freedom of a table-top role playing game? |

Siliconera Wednesday, August 16, 2023 12:30 PM Bandai Namco added the Blitz Lancer class in its latest August 2023 update for the free-to-play MMORPG Blue Protocol. This update also included a new dungeon, hard mode dungeon, and raid for players to experience. The Blitz Lancer class was shown off during one of the recent developer livestreams and appeared in its own showcase to give players an overview of how the Blitz Lancer would play. Blitz Lancer is a highly mobile class, utilizing short-distance attacks while striking with a spear. Blitz Lancer can imprint on enemies and launch powerful air combos and finishing blows. While the Blitz Lancer is nimble and speedy, it has low defense. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEdQXV4mZ5Y[/embed] Other classes in Blue Protocol include the Blade Warden, Twin Striker, Keen Strider, Spell Weaver, and Foe Breaker. Appearing alongside the addition of the Blitz Lancer class in Blue Protocol is also the addition of a new dungeon which takes place in a mysterious cave where water spirits live. It is said that those who wander into the cave and see the water spirit are entranced and doomed to wander the cave forever. The hard mode dungeon takes place in the research facility of an advanced race of beings whose technology is beyond human understanding. Little has been said about the new raid, but it features a fearsome Earth Dragon that appears from a mysterious portal. Here's the latest gallery of screenshots for the game. Siliconera Wednesday, August 16, 2023 12:01 PM Branching narratives are a difficult thing to satisfyingly pull off in video games. Fortunately for developer Deconstructeam, the three-person team has over 10 years of experience crafting narrative experiences with an emphasis in decision-making. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a narrative fortune-telling adventure that explores human relationships through the lens of magic and divination. The game puts the player in the shoes of Fortuna, a Witch and expert in the magical art of card divination. Fortuna has been sentenced to live in exile and isolation at her asteroid home for a thousand years for predicting the fall of her Coven. The game starts 200 years into Fortuna's exile, with the Witch using a forbidden incantation to summon the Behemoth Ábramar, a dangerous and crafty being older than the universe who is capable of granting wishes. Unable to cope with a millennium of isolation, Fortuna makes a contract with Ábramar, and soon after her wishes start to manifest. [caption id="attachment_977971" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Siliconera[/caption] Alongside this change of events, Fortuna receives the power to craft her own deck of cards by using the four elements, which are Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. As the player, this means that the game lets you create different cards with a series of preset art assets. These are the sphere (or the background or the card,) the Arcana, and magical symbols. Players are granted full creative freedom. Aside from being an easy and entertaining mechanic, different combinations of the aforementioned four elements will imbue each card with different meanings and powers. To top it all off, the pixel art of the cards (and, honestly, the entire game) is gorgeous. When old friends and new visitors start to visit Fortuna, her new deck of cards will be able to unlock different fates for them, depending on the cards drawn and their powers. These different fates are surprisingly varied and carry a lot of weight for each character. This makes The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood very replayable. Furthermore, subsequent runs will be shorter and faster, so getting new readings during divination sessions will be easier. Creating new cards opens the door for characters to experience different fates, and trying different contracts with Ábramar will reflect in different endings. [caption id="attachment_977972" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Siliconera[/caption] Speaking of which, the gameplay only serves to elevate the varied and colorful cast of characters. Fortuna has lived for a long time and as such, she has formed a lot of relationships with fellow Witches from her coven. While the main story elements of the game focus on her two closest friends, the fiery and strong Dahlia and pre-Industrial Revolution English darling Jasmine, the game is full of fantastic and fully fleshed characters. Some that really stuck with me include Fortuna's mentor Yu'enia, fellow Behemoth-summoning criminal Grethe, Fortuna's sister Patrice, and Ábramar himself. While some of these people only meet with Fortuna a few times, they still are a rich addition to the detailed world crafted by Deconstructeam. The game is divided by chapters, some of which focus on the present situation of Fortuna slowly regaining her freedom and future, while other focus on her past as a mortal before Ascending into a Witch. The glimpses into Fortuna's life before she Ascended are relatively short and especially poignant. One particularly strong section includes Fortuna's older sister Patrice retelling the story of how their mother left Spain with them during the Francoist dictatorship. These sections are exclusively narrative and are accompanied by some stunning pixel art. The present sections are still scripted, but players get a bit of freedom to create new cards, advancing the plot and doing some side activities. These include studying magic volumes and reading books that Fortuna has collected over the years. I recommend not skipping over the books, as these include a variety of guest writers and are beautifully written passages. [caption id="attachment_977973" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Siliconera[/caption] After finishing my first run of the game, I was left needing more. I was convinced that if I crafted different cards and tried my hand at a different contract with Ábramar, I could find a better ending for everyone. I played through the game two more times. During these runs, I found that new cards and readings can drastically change things. While some plot points are set in stone, most characters have a wide array of options written for them that varies depending on Fortuna's readings. For example, in each of my runs the fate of planet Earth was different. Some elements that Fortuna predicted in the first chapters came back in later chapters to haunt me or to help me in unexpected ways. In two runs, I predicted a member of Fortuna's Coven would be arrested. But in each one, it was a different character. This threw a wrench in my plans, as I assumed several plot points only had one resolution. I don't know how many variations there are available, but I'm eager to find out as I replay the game. [caption id="attachment_977974" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Siliconera[/caption] If there's something I wish the game could have done differently is the execution of its final chapter. I will try to be vague as to avoid spoilers. The final act of the game adds some new gameplay elements that focus on connecting with the Coven. While this is fun, the chapter goes on for a bit longer than the rest, which makes the pacing feel a bit odd. The soundtrack of the game perfectly accompanies every moment, with almost four hours of evocative and relaxing tracks created by artist Paula "Fingerspit" Ruiz. Of special note is the song that plays over the introduction after the tutorial, which is accompanied by an excellent animated, pixel-art opening. [caption id="attachment_977975" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Image via Siliconera[/caption] The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is an intimate story about overcoming isolation, rebuilding your future, and finding community that will resonate with many. The game's card creating mechanics will be perfect for the artistically inclined, and are welcoming to those lacking the skill. Deconstructeam surprised me with the variety of outcomes that the card divination sections offer, and I'm looking forward to jumping into the game again and spending more time with Fortuna and Ábramar. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC. The post Review: The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood Is Intimate and Magical appeared first on Siliconera. |
