Winner: PentimentWhile it may seem at first like a departure for developer Obsidian Entertainment, Pentiment proves to have all the narrative focus and world-building we've come to love from the studio. It presents itself in a different way, sure, but one with a compelling art style and a room for customization that really helps players feel like a part of the story.
TunicIt was a long time coming, but Tunic's action-adventure gameplay made us think of another of 2022's hot releases. It gives you the freedom to explore in your own way, without the handholding of most modern experiences. Oh, and did we mention that it's darn cute? Because it is.
Two Point CampusThis follow-up to Two Point Hospital moves the action from medicine to academia. The whimsical approach tends to work better here, we think, than the more serious subject matter of its predecessor, and Campus benefits from moving into a more original, modern approach than the spiritual-successor Hospital. The game's inclusion in Game Pass certainly didn't hurt, but what earns Two Point Campus a nod here the most? Just how naturally it controls on a console. That's always been hard to accomplish, and here it focuses a lot of the interface and makes it easier to play without dumbing down the game itself. When the 6.3 update arrives for Honkai Impact 3rd, it will bring with it the Bronya Herrscher of Truth S-rank battlesuit. To help people better understand what to expect, HoYoVerse went over its moveset. It explained what that IMG-type, ice DMG-dealing unit can do in both of its two forms. Here is the full list of attacks and abilities in the Herrscher of Truth Extremum and Continuation moveset in Honkai Impact 3rd. This Extremum form is essentially Bronya without any sort of extra armor, wielding her lance. Continuation form is more mech-like with ranged attacks.
Honkai Impact 3rd is available for the PC and mobile devices. The 6.3 Symphony of Truth update is expected to arrive in January 2023. We could learn the NieR Automata anime release date this week, as a Ver1.1a special program will appear on December 28, 2022. Aniplex announced people can watch it at 3am PT/6am ET/12pm CET/8pm JST worldwide on YouTube. It also confirmed a number of major NieR Automata characters' voice actors will appear during the presentation. Also, Yosuke Saito, who produced the game, will be there, as will A-1 Pictures' Shota Fujii. Here is the full list of voice actors who will appear, as well as the characters they voice in NieR Automata.
And here is the video ahead of the stream. While there's no release date for the NieR Automata anime yet, Aniplex and Crunchyroll both briefly noted a possible one. When Crunchyroll announced its winter 2023 lineup of shows and Aniplex brought up The Misfit of Demon King Academy II, both mentioned a January 7, 2023 debut date for both shows. Leading up to the show's debut, plenty of teasers appeared. These tended to focus on major and minor characters from NieR Automata who will appear. For example, 2B, 9S, and A2 promotional videos showed up. These all confirmed their voice actors would return. NieR Automata is immediately available on various platforms like the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The original Hololive Valkyrie Connect event will be coming back to the game. This means people will once again see Laplus Darkness, Ninomae Ina'nis, Takanashi Kiara, and Usada Pekora in-game again. This is described as a "mini collab," rather than a full-fledged rerun, and is in honor of all four getting their "awakening" to power the units up. The event will begin on January 10, 2023. Awakening a character in Valkyrie Connect is essentially a means of powering them up. To do so, you need to completely build up a character. You then need to get materials like Awakening Runes, Awakening Rune Shards, Soul Crystals, and Soul Shards for them. There is also a contest leading up to the awakening. People can retweet a contest tweet to get a metallic art print of the four Hololive Vtubers in their game costumes.
The original crossover began back in May 2022. Ateam also teased a second Hololive event for the game. However, details about it haven't come up yet. Valkyrie Connect is available on iOS and Android devices, as well as PC via Steam. The Hololive event will be back in Valkyrie Connect between January 10-31, 2023. Version 3.3 of Genshin Impact brought with it Genius Invokation TCG as a permanent fixture of the game. Though once a piece of lore that popped up in dialog or flavor text every once in a while, players can now engage in exciting card game action and collecting fun. You can play against NPCs (with rewards the first time you win against them) or against friends. It's a surprisingly addicting feature that, in its current format, feels balanced in its simplicity. What is Genius Invokation TCG?For those who have not yet experienced Genius Invokation TCG firsthand, here is a very simple breakdown of the rules and flow. Your deck must have 3 character cards, as well as 30 other ones. Those 30 cards can consist of Event Cards, Location Cards, and such. At the start of each round, you roll your Elemental Dice and then pull two cards. You can play as many cards as you want per turn, so long as you have the Elemental Dice to expend, and attacking with your characters require you to pay Dice as well. You win when you defeat all of your opponent's Character Cards. Despite all the Yu-Gi-Oh references, the Genshin Impact Genius Invokation TCG honestly feels a bit more like a mix of Hearthstone and a poor man's Magic: The Gathering. It uses the same elemental reaction system in actual Genshin Impact combat. However, there are some alterations for the card game format. Overloaded, for example, will cause damage and then forcibly switch your opponent's Character Card. There are so many deck possibilities to run that it reminds me of when Genshin Impact first came out in 2020. It has been too long since I felt the excitement of discovering various character combinations and elemental reactions, and Genius Invokation is responsible for reviving that spark. [gallery columns="2" ids="944393,944394" link="file"] So Far, the Genshin Impact TCG Feels Balanced and FairI've seen some players claim that the game is "broken." because of cards that can make you draw more per turn (like Liyue Harbor Wharf or Strategize) or grant you more Elemental Dice (like Paimon). However, there are no search cards in this game. If you get those cards, then it's the luck of the draw. You can also have two of the same card in your deck to increase your chances of getting them. If you know exactly what is missing from your deck, you can always just purchase the necessary cards from Prince. Though the current "meta" seems to focus on Yoimiya and Ayaka, running that combination does not always guarantee a win. So much of Genius Invokation TCG falls onto your resource management and tactics. Prior to the Genius Invokation TCG update in Genshin Impact, I spent quite a bit of time playing Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel. I have played Yu-Gi-Oh since the early 2000s and have seen it transform as Konami introduced new summoning methods and archetypes. While it was never a particular slow-paced game, it was nothing like it is now. Each turn drags on forever as you summon and sacrifice a veritable horde of monsters, rifling through your deck to get the perfect Spell Card you need to complete your combo. My love for how simple Genius Invokation TCG is might be due to the mind-boggling mess that modern Yu-Gi-Oh now is. However, time will tell if Genius Invokation TCG can retain its game balance in Genshin Impact. So long as all players have access to the same pool of cards, then it should remain fair. Hopefully, HoYoVerse focuses on introducing more Character Cards for now. I think that adding more powerful Action Cards could easily topple over the balance it has achieved. The Persona 5 crossover event will be making a reappearance in Granblue Fantasy. Players will have a second chance to obtain the Phantom Thieves as part of Granblue Fantasy's "Special Collaboration Fever" event, which will take place through the month of January 2023. Characters such as Joker, Morgana, Skull, Panther, and Fox will be available to obtain for a limited time when it returns. The first time the Persona 5 crossover event appeared in Granblue Fantasy was in June 2018. The same roster of characters were available to obtain. However with the return of the crossover, Joker can now be upgraded to a 5-star uncapped unit. Additionally, other crossovers will appear in Granblue Fantasy during this period. The Code Geass and Card Captor Sakura crossover events will appear in January 2023, alongside the Persona 5 one. Available units include Sakura and Lelouch Lamperouge. More recently, Granblue Fantasy featured a One Piece crossover. During this period players could obtain Luffy, Uta, and both Nami and Nico Robin who appeared as a single unit. The crossover appeared in September 2022 to help promote the One Piece: Red film. Granblue Fantasy is immediately available for PC, and for Android and iOS devices, with the Persona 5 crossover event to appear in January 2023. Square Enix announced Bravely Default Brilliant Lights will end service in 2023. This information appeared through the official Japanese Twitter account, which included a message going over the closure of the game. While unexpected, Square Enix apologized for the abruptness of the announcement. However, it did not elaborate as to why the game will be ending service on February 28, 2023. That said, more information about how Square Enix will distribute the main scenario will appear in the near future. It was announced as part of the 10th anniversary of Bravely Default, with the mobile title featuring characters from previous games such as Agnes Oblige, Edea Lee, and Ringabel. Ahead of its June 23, 2022 release, Square Enix announced new Final Fantasy XVI news will appear. The company shared this confirmation through the official Japanese Twitter account for the game. While brief, it mentions that more information about it will appear before its eventual release. However, no specific details were shared as to what this information may be. Only that new details will be shared at some point in the future. The tweet about upcoming news included a piece of previously released key artwork of several key characters in Final Fantasy XVI. It features protagonist Clive, Jill, Joshua, and Torgal in their early years. The scene features the characters relaxing among some unidentified ruins. Leading up to the Chainsaw Man anime finale on December 27, 2022, a number of character trailers appeared, and the Makima and Power ones were the final two. Each video helps remind people what the characters were up to earlier in the season. Meanwhile, the finale teaser focuses on the build-up and fight against the Katana Devil. It begins by introducing her in a very vocal way. Then, we see what her daily life sharing a home with Aki and Denji is like. Due to her "nature," she doesn't believe in things like eating vegetables or proper hygiene. We also see her meeting her cat, Meowy, and living out in the wild. Next is the Makima Chainsaw Man trailer. It begins with her first meeting with Denji. She happens upon him after he transformed into Chainsaw Man for the first time. Upon seeing him, she hugs him. The ensuing scenes show her both acting as the Public Safety Devil Hunter Special Division 4 head and teasing Denji in various ways. Finally, here is the Chainsaw Man finale teaser. While it is only 15 seconds long, it shows folks like Denji, Power, and Aki as they prepare for the Katana Devil confrontation. As a reminder, leading up to the last episode PVs appeared for Aki, Himeno, Kobeni, and Pochita as well. Episode 12 is the final episode of the anime adaptation's first season. Finally, Build-a-Bear released its last Eevee evolution in its Pokemon plush line: Sylveon. The stuffed toy is now available online both in the US and UK. At the moment, it is only available in bundles on the storyfront. That means it costs $72/£57. However, retail debuts are on the way. The North American announcement noted it will show up in stores on January 5, 2023. As is usual with the online bundle, it nets people the new Build-a-Bear Pokemon plush and some outfits. People get Sylveon with a five-in-one sound chip with its various cries. They also get two outfits for it. One is a pink cape with Poke Balls all over it and a fake white fur lining. The other is a pink pair of pajamas that, again, features a Poke Ball print. Here's a full gallery showing Sylveon with and without its bundle outfits, as well as the cape and pajamas alone. While people can only get the full bundle, the site did note individual prices for items. So when people find a Sylveon in a Build-a-Bear store, it will cost $46/£36. It took quite some time for this Sylveon Eevee evolution plush to appear. For reference, the last one in this line was Leafeon, and it debuted back in March 2022. The first Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War cour ended when episodes 12 and 13 aired on December 27, 2022 in Japan, and now we know part 2 of the anime will appear in July 2023. Both Viz Media and the official Japanese Twitter account confirmed its return. There's also a new promotional video highlighting some things people can expect from the show when the next batch of episodes appears. This second part will be known as "The Separation." Here's the Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War anime part 2 teaser, which refers to it as the next season. Initially, it features important iconography from the most recent parts of the story while major players speak. However, at the 1:07 mark different Soul Reaper and Quincy characters appear. At the very end, we see both Ichigo Kurosaki and Uryu Ishida. The finale for the first part of this storyline appeared as a one-hour special. People could see both episode 12 and 13 one after the other. The first Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War cour is now over, and part 2 of the anime will begin in July 2023. It will appear on both Blu-ray and DVD in Japan. It is streaming via services like Hulu. Viz Media handled the localization of the manga. The official English website is now open. This was first spotted after @OneRaichu on Twitter spoke about it in a very short tweet. And it's important to take this information with a pinch of salt for now. But there's seemingly a fair bit of evidence and logic behind the decision to cancel Meteor Lake-S. For those who don't know, Meteor Lake is the name of Intel's next-generation lineup of CPUs. Intel's current CPUs on the market are part of the Raptor Lake generation. But, if the rumors are to be believed, Intel is canceling Meteor Lake's desktop release.
