Siliconera Sunday, September 22, 2024 7:00 PM Trails in the Sky OVA Anime Also Needs a Remake       Released divided up into two episodes in 2011 and 2012, respectively, the Trails in the Sky OVA was short-lived. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if even some dedicated The Legend of Heroes fans hadn't heard of it. The Trails in the Sky OVA anime is an intriguing relic of the series' past, one worth its own remake from scratch at some point. With the recent surprise announcement of one of my favorite JRPGs receiving a remake with Trails in the Sky the 1st, it also feels like the right time to revisit the game's OVA anime. Despite being well over a decade old at this point, the OVA's two episodes feel like a lengthy and thrilling movie. The animation is surprisingly detailed and holds up quite well even now. Image via Kinema Citrus and Nihon Falcom However, there are some issues if you look beneath the surface. For one, the Trails in the Sky OVA anime has a strange way of adapting the original games. It picks up its story essential with the second game, SC. The anime follows up after the first game's surprising twist and adapts much of the second JRPG. But even then, it doesn't do a complete job and leaves viewers hanging in the story. The Trails in the Sky OVA anime has such a strange situation. It doesn't start from the beginning nor does it even tell the whole story. In this way, it is highly inaccessible for newcomers. To make matters worse, it makes some awkward changes from the game's original plot, switching around certain events and when they happen. But perhaps the gravest error of them all with the OVA anime is its lack of access anywhere today. There is no way to legally stream this anime, so you have to resort to alternative means. It is a shame since they even went so far as to have an official English dub. Rather than make it more accessible today, though, I think a full Trails in the Sky OVA anime remake is necessary. I have long thought The Legend of Heroes franchise would make for some excellent anime series. The story, world-building, and characters are more than enough to carry on their own without gameplay. It only makes the recent Northern War anime all the more frustrating. Rather than directly adapting Trails of Cold Steel, it opts for a side story set between the games. Image via Falcom The animation is honestly sub-par for today's standards and the storytelling is meh. In fact, it doesn't even quite give fan-favorite characters like Rean and Altina the full attention they deserve. Nihon Falcom can fix this situation by starting over from scratch. What better way to do that than to see a full anime series adaptation of Trails in the Sky? Doing this randomly out of nowhere would've felt somewhat awkward in recent years, but now is the perfect time. With the upcoming release of Trails in the Sky the 1st, this is the chance to give a true anime adaptation a try. This would open up the series to new audiences, reward long-term fans, and perhaps even further the growing success of the JRPG franchise. The Zemuria Saga can't go on forever. In fact, I presume the back-to-back, almost annual schedule of releases has to slow down at some point. One of the best ways to offset this potential shift would be with continuous anime adaptations of the different arcs. I just hope that Nihon Falcom uses this prime chance to give fans what they deserve: a true anime adaptation of Trails in the Sky and all other games. But with the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, it is now time to figure out the best traditional 2D game in the series in our staff members' opinions. Image via Nintendo Siliconera Speaks Up: What's the Best 2D Zelda Game? It's impossible for me to choose since the top-down Zelda games are my favorites. I adore both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, but the one I remember the most fondly is Link's Awakening and it's beautiful "Ballad of the Wind Fish" song. Special mention also goes to A Link Between Worlds and its experimental ideas with item rental and being able to complete dungeons in any order. -- Daniel I mean, I think I'm going to have to say The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. It really captured my heart and attention the first time I played it. The island had such personality to it, and it was so much fun to explore. Plus, it really helped me get into the genre on my first handheld system. -- Jenni The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap will always stand out for me as my favorite "traditional" 2D-style Zelda game. The gorgeous cel-shaded art style still holds up so well today. While it was my first game in the series after Ocarina of Time, it still captures my heart with its novel dungeons, puzzles, and combat. Siliconera Sunday, September 22, 2024 9:00 AM In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name Manga Builds a Mystery       Yen Press picks up quite a few isekai manga and manhwa, but they can all manage to feel different. In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name is one of the latest, with volume 1 out now, and it's a manga with a compelling mystery. Siblings end up spirited away to another world at different times. However, once our heroine Ichika gets there, constant questions about her, her sister, the two princes they're set to marry, and the world keep coming up. It constantly keeps you wondering what's going on, preparing all these threads for us to follow up on in later volumes.  Editor's Note: There will be mild spoilers for the first volume of the In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name manga. Before Ichika and her sister Karen ever get spirited away to another world in this isekai manga, we already know something is up in In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name. Ichika found a magical mirror, and it is one which allows her to communicate with a person in that world. It's a young prince named Cecil. They share stories about themselves and their world together. It's a bit of an unusual situation though, since he's a child and she's a teenager and later adult! Ichika kept it mostly a secret, but told her little sister Karen everything.  Image via Yen Press However, one day the mirror and Karen disappeared. Everyone was distraught. And then… Ichika found herself teleported to that other world as well. It turns out that in addition to the spacial difference between realms, there's a discrepancy with regards to time too. So Prince Cecil is a grown man. It's also the sort of manga where isekai situations are normal, with the people who come over being accepted among the nobility due to them having the unique ability to use Hallowed Magic.  The first mystery, right off the bat, is Karen stealing Ichika's identity and name in In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name. From what we see in the early chapters in their "home" world, Karen and Ichika seemed close. The two seemed to get along rather well. So yes, Karen going off of what she knew about Ichika's stories makes sense. But why go to such lengths? Why would there be such animosity? Especially as we start to see the treatment between the two sisters throughout this first volume.  The second involves the two princes. There's Cecil, who we know about. However, after being brought over to the other world, Ichika is promptly engaged to his brother Prince Noah. However, Noah despises not only Ichika's sister Karen, but Ichika herself. The venomous nature of it is so curious. There are hints offered throughout, so some of the future threads are teased even in this first volume. But the fact that we're confronted with that kind of attitude from the start invites curiosity.  But the nature of this isekai story and Ichika's summoning are the main mysteries in the In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name manga. The mirror is a clear tie between the worlds. Once Ichika is there, we learn about past events and travelers. This is a regular occurrence, which is curious. However, so is the fact that Ichika is even there. Karen already had the mirror and was summoned. That artifact was missing. How did Ichika end up there? Why did she get pulled through as well? What will happen now that two Hallowed Saints capable of using the magic of saviors are there? It really makes me wish we knew more about the future of In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name, as due to the age of the manga and circumstances, only the first volume of this isekai story is available. Yen Press doesn't have a release window for the second yet. Given how many cliffhangers and unresolved questions the first volume introduces, I'm finding it so difficult to know I'll need to wait for more. Volume 1 of In Another World, My Sister Stole My Name is available now via Yen Press, and there's no release date for the second volume of the manga yet. It ignites the hype fire in your belly and soundtracks truly great esports action - it is the very definition of the word 'anthem.' Recent years, however, have stumbled, unable to shake the specter of 2014's Warriors, 2017's Legends Never Die, and 2018's Rise.
