Chrono Cross remaster comes to Steam, too

Today's Nintendo Direct went heavy on the RPG games, and Square Enix was well-represented in the lineup - including the much-speculated-upon Chrono Cross remaster. Now that the dust has settled (and Square Enix has sent out its full press releases) we know that the updated Chrono Cross is not a Switch exclusive. It's coming to Steam and other consoles, too.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition will launch on April 7 across Steam, Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. As the name suggests, it's not just a remaster of Chrono Cross, as it also includes Radical Dreamers - Le Trésor Interdit -, a text adventure that's never previously been released in English. Officially, anyway.

Chrono Cross features updated, upscaled visuals, but don't worry - if you find the new filters as unpleasant as I do, you can turn them off. There are also new quality of life features, like the option to turn fights on or off or switch on auto battles.

Hearts of Iron 4 devs plan to increase the update tempo

Last year's release of the No Step Back expansion for Hearts of Iron IV saw players flooding back to the WWII grand strategy game in droves, breaking its record concurrent player count five years after launch. Now, Hearts of Iron's new game director Peter Nicholson has posted a cautiously ambitious roadmap for the coming year, and his hope is for development to increase in tempo and better incorporate community feedback.

While Nicholson says he shares many of former game director Dan Lind's ambitions for Hearts of Iron IV, he distinguishes his approach by explaining that he hopes to leave "plenty of space for reactive development," which he says worked well while he was directing the Imperator: Rome team.

The goal - and Nicholson is careful to point out that a goal is a different thing from a promise - this year is to increase the pace of new releases, and to bring the community on board earlier in the process as patches are going through development. "This also means getting ideas into public view slightly faster, for feedback and conversation," Nicholson writes. "We're not exactly sure how this will look yet, but it is likely that there'll be a reorganisation of the traditional dev-diary schedule into something that feels less like a milestone delivery."

Lost Ark free-to-play release time confirmed

Lost Ark is shaking up the Steam charts in a way we haven't seen since, well… the last Amazon-published MMORPG to hit Valve's platform. The Western release of the 2019 Korean action-MMO is popping off in a big way, and right now you've still got to pay for a Founder's Pack to get in. Luckily, the Lost Ark free-to-play release time isn't far off.

Pre-loads already began earlier this week, so if you want to be ready the instant servers are open for free-to-play folks, you can start that download right now on Steam. The devs provided these release times earlier in the week, but hopefully they'll prove a bit more accurate than the early access times, which were delayed by an hour.

Luckily, even as the game reached over a half-million concurrent players on day one, the servers held steady - outside of some queue times, naturally. We'll see how things hold up on the free-to-play launch, but the early access release has been promising.

Nintendo Switch Sports Release Date

Legendary Nintendo Wii launch game Wii Sports is getting a proper follow-up on the Switch, though it's long past the Switch's launch window. The Nintendo Switch Sports release date is set for April 29, 2022.

The February 2022 Nintendo Direct shared a trailer for the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ16-1YIRAc

The Nintendo Switch Sports release date trailer detailed some of the updates coming to the Switch iteration of the series. Rather than the system-level Mii avatars, Nintendo Switch Sports players are represented by more detailed characters. Environments and maps also feature updated graphics from the Wii original. The game will support local play on a single Switch system for up to 4 players, as well as online play for the first time. Online options include friend-based matches and randomized matchmaking. Players can unlock additional items from online play.

The game features sports from the original Wii Sports, like Tennis, Bowling, and the sword-fighting game Chambara from Wii Sports Resort. Soccer, Volleyball, and Badminton also join as new activities. As with the original, all the games use motion controls. People hold Switch Joy-con controllers in the hands. The leg strap included with Ring Fit Adventure (and also included with the physical edition) can also play a role. One example shown involves inserting a Joy-con into the leg strap to enable the use of kicking motions while playing Soccer's Shootout mode. An update scheduled for summer will add the leg strap functionality to standard Soccer matches.

Nintendo Switch Sports will launch on the Switch on April 29, 2022. A pre-release online play test will take place on February 18-20, 2022 for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Golf will join the sport lineup in the planned Autumn update.

Square Enix confirmed that Cloud will join the roster of Chocobo GP racers, however people will need to earn him via the Season 1 Pass

Cloud from Final Fantasy VII will appear in the racer roster in Chocobo GP. However, everyone won't have immediate access to him. Rather, he's someone folks will have to earn. Square Enix confirmed there will be a Season Pass system, and he will be among the rewards in the first one. In addition, Squall from FFVIII will appear.

Here's the official reveal. It doesn't actually show Cloud in a vehicle, but it does offer a glimpse at how the racer will appear in Chocobo GP. He comes armed with his Buster Sword. Square Enix didn't mention if a Season Pass will cost money.

A screenshot on the Japanese official Twitter account showed Squall.

There will be a mix of Chocobo series characters and Final Fantasy crossover racers in the Chocobo GP roster. For example, both Shirma and Irma will be back. Final Fantasy staple Gilgamesh is there too. An update going over how to unlock new race series showed FFIX's Steiner and Vivi.

Chocobo GP will appear on the Nintendo Switch worldwide on March 10, 2022, and Cloud will be in its first season pass. There is also a free Chocobo GP' game for Android and Apple iOS devices.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Characters Designed by Masatsugu Saito

The Xenoblade Chronicles 3 characters might remind you of ones from a past game, as Xenoblade Chronicles 2 designer Masatsugu Saito returned to work on the cast. Executive Director Tetsuya Takahashi brought it and other details up in an official message following the game's announcement.

The announcement didn't just mention Saito. A number of other returning Xenoblade Chronicles series staff will also be back. For example, Koichi Mugitani contributed designs for Xenoblade Chronicles X and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and made key art for this entry. Returning composers ACE, Kenji Hiramatsu, Manami Kiyota, Mariam Abounnasr, and Yasunori Mitsuda will be back. All five composed music for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 too.

As a reminder, you can already see how some of the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 characters look. The first trailer appeared as part of its February 2022 Nintendo Direct reveal. The main protagonist and both allies and enemies all showed up in the initial footage.

To help provide more insight, here's another scene taken from the game.

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon Nintendo Switch

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is now available for the Nintendo Switch. As something of a surprise announcement, Nintendo revealed the title to be available for Switch through its Japanese Nintendo Direct. Its short montage shared that consumers can immediately purchase the title. It is available worldwide for Nintendo Switch, and can be purchased for $24.99 through the Nintendo eShop.

A deluxe edition is also available to purchase. It costs $34.99, and comes with the Famicom version of the game. However, the in-game text for Famicom version is entirely in Japanese, with the exception of the menu screen. The deluxe edition also comes with a gallery mode, digital artbook, and a mini-soundtrack. The soundtrack features a total of 15 songs.

Previously, Konami stated that the title would release on the Nintendo Switch. However, while it was slated for a 2022 release, it was not clear when the title would eventually arrive on the console.

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon originally launched on PCs through Early Access in May 2021. In June 2021, the developers added a new playable character, Getsu Renge, into the game. Several quality-of-life updates joined the game alongside the addition of the new character.

kirby mouthful mode

During the February 9, 2022 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo showed off what Mouthful Mode will look like in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The trailer is almost three minutes long. Unlike Copy Abilities that allow Kirby to obtain an enemy's skills after he swallows them, Mouthful Mode will change how Kirby navigates the overworld.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B-qk4_V2jY

The trailer shows off a variety of different forms that Kirby can take depending on what he swallows. For example, Vending Mouth (by swallowing a vending machine) will have him shoot out juice cans as projectile weapons. Car Mouth (by swallowing a car) allows him to travel faster. He can also damage boxes and attack enemies when he zooms around.

The more Waddle Dees you rescue in the game, the more Waddle Dee Town will grow. This will unlock new resources and buildings for you to explore. For example, you can upgrade your Copy Abilities. Fire turns into Volcano Fire, which can then turn into Dragon Fire. While Fire only pelts enemies with fire balls, Dragon Fire will allow Kirby to constantly breathe fire and even glide in the sky with wings.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land will launch worldwide on March 25, 2022. The game is also available for pre-order in the Nintendo eShop for $59.99.

loop8

During the February 9, 2022 Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced a 2022 release window for LOOP8. This game is a "juvenile RPG" from Marvelous that has multiple endings and paths the game can take depending on your dialogue choices. It will also feature a turn-based battle system. The exact release date for LOOP8 is still unknown, but more information will appear in the future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UymVi2gb6n0

LOOP8 follows the story of Nini, who moves to Ashihara. Despite the peaceful atmosphere of the seaside town, the world is actually in great peril from the threat of the Kegai. Nini and his friends must face off against them, wielding powers that they obtain within the story. There will also be a calendar and clock system in-game to keep you on track, meaning there is a time management system as well.

LOOP8's biggest selling point will be its "Kareru System." Every character other than Nini has their own actions, moods, and desires throughout the day. You will have to carefully choose your dialogue options to match how they feel or what they want if you hope to get the outcome you're looking for. As other characters' relationships and moods are always changing, you can experience a variety of outcomes over several playthroughs. Games such as Until Dawn boasted a similar system, with varying forms of success.

LOOP8 will launch in 2022 for the Nintendo Switch in Japan. There is no news of a localization as of yet.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Limited Edition Announced for Europe

It's just been announced, but already there's news about one Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Limited Edition. Europe will be getting it. There's no price listed for it yet. However, Nintendo's European branch announced all of the bonus items that will come with it.

The Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Limited Edition will be a physical release. That means things will start with a copy of the game. People will also get an artbook with designs taken from the game. There will also be some items focusing on the cast. People can display five acrylic figures inspired by its main characters. The announcement didn't reveal who will get them. However, as a reminder, Byleth, Claude, Dimitri, and Edelgard are the most important people in Three Houses and Three Hopes. There will also be a set of character postcards with more art. Finally, people get a Fodlan map.

As a reminder, this is a Musou game. That means it is a beat'em up where someone chooses a member of the cast, then cuts through hordes of enemies. The first Fire Emblem Warriors featured an original story and cast taken from multiple installments.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes will head to the Nintendo Switch on June 24, 2022. The Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Limited Edition will appear in Europe that same day. There's no special edition of the game confirmed for North America just yet.

metroid dread update

During the Nintendo Direct on February 9, 2022, Nintendo announced the first major update for Metroid Dread. It will go live in the Nintendo eShop as soon as the stream is over, and will not cost money. The Metroid Dread update will include two new difficulty levels: Dread Mode and Rookie Mode. These two modes will also become available in the demo version of the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mi1fGFI-1lA

In the trailer for Dread Mode, we can see just how easy it is to die. Even the simplest of attacks or the most inconsequential of damage end with Samus's armor disintegrating, resulting in a game over. Meanwhile, Rookie Mode will implement a higher rate of recovery from items, making the game far more forgiving for beginners or those who are not good with action games. This Metroid Dread update will fulfill the needs of both players who desire a challenge, and those who are more interested in getting through the game.

In addition to Dread Mode and Rookie Mode, another Metroid Dread update is slated for April 2022. This update will include Boss Rush Mode, in which you face off against boss after boss without any breathers. More information on Boss Rush Mode, as well as any other modes that may appear in that update, will appear in the near future.

Finally, the story's outcome will change depending on whether the player guesses the correct series of events. There will be a total of four murder mysteries to solve.

The Nintendo Direct trailer for the game briefly goes over each segment of the game. The deduction portion, in particular, features a unique selection menu that allows players to drag and drop notable evidence to solve cases.

Atomic Heart Release WindowWe all love a good nightmarish, alternate history story, don't we? We don't? Fine, be like that. Atomic Heart, an upcoming open-world, first-person action RPG from the developers of scrapped VR game Soviet Lunapark has just given us a better look at its story, as well as a release window. The game is set to release in the fourth quarter of this year, although we aren't sure which month. The trailer literally ends by saying it'll release in "#######ber," and seeing as none of the four mounts with that suffix have a prefix of seven letters, it's easy to see that the devs are just being coy. Atomic Heart is set to be a game predominantly about shooting, albeit with some melee action. Ammo is said to be quite scarce, and there'll be stealth as well, so it doesn't sound like we'll be going around with guns blazing this time. The game takes place in an alternate reality 1950s Soviet Union. It puts us in the shoes of a KGB agent k...

Chrono Cross PcThere are few things that have perplexed me more over the last 20 years than the fact that Chrono Cross has been stuck on the PlayStation since release. Chrono Trigger has gotten ports. Every Final Fantasy under the sun has gotten a port or two. Pretty much everybody was getting some love, save for Serge, Kid, and the rest of the game's enormous cast. But the time has finally come for the game to become available to people outside of Sony's paper mache powerhouse. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is set to come to PC this April. Took ya' long enough. Truth be told, this isn't the biggest surprise, considering recent events and rumors. Between the crossover with Another Eden and various other rumblings, it was clear that something was up. The game was announced officially today during Nintendo's Direct. So, what exactly will we get with this? Well, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is a remaster for PC, obviously. But it also includes ...

Next Assassin's Creed Valhalla Standalone Game BasimAs it often is with the AAA games industry, we can hardly go a year without another installment of an already bloated franchise. No, I'm not referring to Call of Duty. This time. In a report by Bloomberg, it appears Ubisoft is looking to deliver the next Assassin's Creed as a standalone starring the Middle Eastern Basim from Valhalla. According to the report, the game was first meant to be an expansion for Valhalla. It spun off the base game during development and now will get released sometime this year or next. As a standalone game, it won't be as large as Valhalla or its predecessors. The report also claims that the game is more focused on stealth action. Considering it's following Basim, the standalone Assassin's Creed game is likely filling in lore gaps following his introduction in Valhalla.   But, of course, Ubisoft is staying mum. Speaking to Bloomberg, a Ubisoft representative refused to confirm the rumor. Eurogamer, however, did speak wit...

Lost Ark PaladinLost Ark players who purchased one of the Founder's Packs would have received a 30-day Crystalline Aura as part of the bundle. A quick glance at the Founder's Pack page on the MMORPG's website will show you almost all the features you get with the Aura. However, many players will have no idea what all these features do, or even what they are. The page also lack info on the handy pet perks. So, let's take a look at everything you need to know about the Lost Ark Crystalline Aura. If you didn't purchase a Founder's Pack, you can still get access to a Crystalline Aura through the game's store. It will cost you 420 Crystals, or $9.99 USD, for a 30-day Aura. You can also choose to purchase a 180-day Aura for $49.99, essentially saving you $10 if you plan to have it constantly active.   I suggest you don't active your Crystalline Aura when you first start playing. Rather, wait until you are further into the game and can make better use of the travel benefits, crafting bonuses, and num...

Dead Cells biome chestLast month, the final paid DLC for Dead Cells, titled The Queen and the Sea, finally dropped, and it provided a climax about as exciting as one could hope for. Having said that, the DLC does not mark the end of Dead Cells as a whole. Developer Motion Twin has even more free updates in store on top of the more than 20 updates that have already come out. One of these updates has already entered the alpha stage, and Dead Cells fans can freely try it out to get a first look at an upcoming biome, dubbed The Bank. According to a Steam update, the new Bank biome turns up randomly during any given run, and it replaces the biomes that would normally show up once players enter it. To access it, simply get to the standard final boss, the Hand of the King, at least once. Those who have already done so can come across The Bank during their next run. You enter The Bank by opening a special chest that appears in between most biomes, and you'll have to open it right there and then, otherwise,...
