shin megami tensei ttrpg tokyo conception

Shin Megami Tensei - The Roleplaying Game: Tokyo Conception is a TTRPG based off the Shin Megami Tensei series that'll come out on September 10, 2024. Pre-orders for it are open via Amazon.

You will need three to five players, as well as a GM to play. As you can imagine from the title, it will have lots of terms that a Shin Megami Tensei player should be familiar with. The references to Shin Megami Tensei aren't just in the spells you can use and demons you can fight. Shin Megami Tensei: Tokyo Conception will include systems from the game. You'll be able to negotiate with demons, as well as inflict or be inflicted by status ailments. That's on top of the usual TTRPG elements of rolling dice.

Tokyo Conception plays within the world of Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne, but you will not need to have played that first in order to play the TTRPG. In fact, according to the publisher, you won't need to have knowledge of the franchise at all to leap in and understand the plot. The book will contain nearly 100 pages with demon stats, as well as seeds, so you can use it to make your own campaign as well.

Shin Megami Tensei - The Roleplaying Game: Tokyo Conception will come out on September 10, 2024.

Wow Threads of Destiny

Blizzard released a new story cinematic trailer for World of Warcraft titled "Threads of Destiny." The video shows the past of Ansurek the Nerubian Queen, a secondary antagonist who will appear in The War Within expansion.

Before the launch of an expansion, Blizzard often likes to release cinematic trailers to provide context or teasers for upcoming story developments. This one focuses on the Nerubians of Azj-Kahet, whose Queen Ansurek allied with the expansion's main villain, Xal'atath. Ansurek will be the final boss of Nerub-ar Palace, the first raid of The War Within that is set to launch on September 11, 2024.

The Nerubians are a race of spider-like creatures who have appeared as far back as Warcraft III, though this may be the first time we see one of their cities fully intact. As well as hosting the first raid, the Nerubian city of Azj-Kahet will also be an explorable zone in the expansion.

You can watch the full World of Warcraft "Threads of Destiny" cinematic trailer via YouTube below:

A recent update added a new pre-expansion event to World of Warcraft titled Radiant Echoes, which involves fighting the ghosts of iconic raid bosses past. Meanwhile, pre-orders forThe War Within expansion are available and include cosmetic armor sets, mounts, and even beta access at some tiers.

World of Warcraft is available now for PC and Mac, while The War Within expansion is scheduled to launch on August 26, 2024.

hanako-san of the toilet toy

Megahouse will release a new toy based on Hanako of the Toilet, a popular Japanese urban legend. It'll come out in early August 2024.

The toy is called "Dokkiri Hanako of the Toilet," and it's quite similar to toys like Pop Up Pirate. Each player will take turns pulling down the lever of the toilet. Depending on your luck, something will pop out of the toilet on your turn. Items that will pop out are a bug, toilet paper, or Hanako herself. This toy will not require any batteries and will cost 3278 JPY ($22.70).

Hanako of the Toilet, or Hanako-san, is a very famous urban legend that pretty much everyone in Japan knows about. There are various backstories for Hanako depending on the version you hear. But in general, she's a young girl named Hanako who haunts school toilets. Like with Bloody Mary, some children may try to summon Hanako-san as a dare or a game. Because of her popularity and ubiquity, many Japanese properties feature Hanako-san as a character, or base a character off her. Examples include Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun and Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II.

The Hanako of the Toilet toy will come out some time in early August 2024. So it should be out some time soon.

Castlevania Dead by Daylight

When the Castlevania and Dead by Daylight crossover was announced, I wasn't all that excited. And I'm a pretty big Castlevania fan. I mean, I dressed in the stylings of a Castlevania character for an entire year, and even the middling Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series has grown on me after being starved of content for so long. Some of you are probably reading this thinking, "Kazuma! The Netflix series exists!" and I know that, and I don't like it.

So when Behaviour Interactive announced that it would be collaborating with Konami to bring Castlevania into the fold, I immediately assumed it would be versions of the characters that appeared in the popular Neftlix adaptation. Color me surprised when it was not. In fact, the version of Trevor and Dracula that appear in the crossover are actually two of my favorite designs. One could argue that Dracula has more or less looked the same across generations, with the version he appears as clearly being more akin to Symphony of the Night. But Trevor, oh Trevor Belmont, he's ripped right out of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, and I love that.

While I might have lost some of you at Lords of Shadow, Curse of Darkness is actually my favorite Castlevania game. I love it for a lot of reasons; for Hector and Isaac, and the weird Digimon-esque Devilforging system. I just think it's a lot of fun, and I love the character designs and the sort of theatricality of it all. It's Castlevania through and through, even if you're not immediately playing a Belmont.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness was a maligned entry in the series. Almost all Castlevania fans just wanted that classic 2D platforming experience, and while Konami was desperately trying to make 3D stick for the series, it just wasn't taking. But it had all of the flavors, all of the visuals, and was a deeply satisfying game. At least to me. I'm just one of those weirdos that actually likes a lot of the less loved entries in the series, but I've always loved Curse of Darkness. This is probably why I don't care for the Netflix series, even if it has arguably done a lot more for Castlevania than Curse of Darkness has.

That's why I was totally surprised it was Curse of Darkness Trevor that made it into Dead by Daylight. Not that I'm complaining. I'm absolutely going to slap down the dollars to purchase this Chapter, even if I don't play Dead by Daylight all that much anymore. (I'm extremely casual, and have only popped in for the Silent Hill and Resident Evil Chapters.)

So I just wanna thank whoever at Behaviour Interactive and Konami came to the decision to incorporate one of the less-liked Castlevania entries into Dead by Daylight. Because Dead by Daylight is a behemoth of a game and seeing one of my favorites designs from the Castlevania games over something that's just generally popular, is awesome.

Dead by Daylight is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X. The Castlevania crossover Chapter will come to Dead by Daylight on August 27, 2024.

Seto Kaiba and Yami Yugi Nendoroids face off

Good Smile Company opened pre-orders for the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh Nendoroid of Seto Kaiba, and people who buy directly from the company get a decorative Blue-Eyes White Dragon sheet for him to "summon." The figure is slated to release in December 2024 in Japan and Q2 2025, and it can currently be pre-ordered directly through the company until September 18, 2024.

For those of us in the US and Canada, the figure is available on the US storefront for $44.99. For those living elsewhere, it can be preordered on the Japanese international store for ¥7,400.

The Nendoroid of Seto Kaiba puts him in his white coat from the Yu-Gi-Oh Battle City arc. It will stand at 10cm (3.94 inches) tall. The face plates let someone display him with a proud smirk, a serious glare, or a shouting face. In addition the figure will include parts for the Battle City Duel Disk, cards, his signature pendant, and various arm parts for different posing.

Here are the sample images, which show off the Nendoroid's poses and expressions:

For a limited time, all orders from the Good Smile Company site will come with a background sheet of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. That comes with a stand, so it can be displayed behind the figure.

I love the concept behind Exhausted Man and feel it is a genuinely clever game, but the nature of some tasks mean it's best played in bursts.

I get so tired. Like when I check my smart watch, sometimes during busy weeks or seasons I'll have under six hours of sleep per night. Plus with things like inflation or family troubles, that's more stress. Exhausted Man, a new game from Candelman Games, gets that and shows exactly how much effort it can feel like it takes to get things done. It's really clever! But, at the same time, it's also honestly a bit of a chore given how tasking some challenges can get in this physics puzzler.

Everyone in Exhausted Man is exhausted. From the woman going through exercises in the tutorial to the people like the game developer preparing a demo ahead of a festival. It's a real problem! However, they still need to accomplish tasks, and that's where players come in. Each person will need to accomplish a set number of "tentpole" milestones over the course of a limited number of acts, while also managing energy levels. If you manage to get all the hallmarks done, you get an optimal ending situation. However, being so tired that you can't even stand up or properly move your appendages means getting through the two to five tasks for each selected challenge each act could feel like an impossible task. Funny and clever, due to some fun flavor text, but tiring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RQWT3UiJqo

At the start of each "pack" and adventure you open in Exhausted Man, you hear a quick story about the goal the character is trying to accomplish in the game. You then see how many milestones you need to complete to make certain major story beats happen and get a best result. Cards will appear, depending on the props placed in the room. Each one will take up a certain amount of your limited time (but is not timed), will potentially give you multiple milestone points, and will either add to or detract from your overall energy. Completing a task also can unlock more items to place and allow you to set up more before the next act. So it's almost like you're pairing a stat management simulation with an action puzzle game.

Also, there's a nap button. That's fun. I like naps.

The thing about Exhausted Man is while I admire its concept, its humor, and the social commentary, playing this game can really tire me out! If you have your character get too tired, then there will be these yawn bubbles spawning. If you run into them, your avatar just falls asleep for a second and drops, potentially losing any progress you made. There will be moments when you can't choose which "event" will happen next in the story, that could lead to a challenge that is multi-part or especially frustrating. Even if you do pick a next act that is one you think will work, you may find out after selecting it that the items you chose as critical parts to interact with it weren't good options due to their size or them possibly moving. Building gets frustrating, since it means needing to constantly shift the camera angle to properly gauge positions and, again, maybe not selecting certain items as proper setpieces for that series of actions. Also, stages get crowded toward the ends of stories since you're constantly getting to add new props, and sometimes I wished there was an option to just… not place items before the next act.

I love the concept behind Exhausted Man and feel it is a genuinely clever game, but the nature of some tasks mean it's best played in bursts.
Screenshot by Siliconera

Some anti-frustration features are in effect in Exhausted Man, to Candleman Games' credit. If your character gets stuck, you can head into the pause menu to unstick them and basically get a fresh start. I noticed after I got so exhausted that choosing an energy-rebuilding act card wouldn't make a dent, a forced event would come up that would completely refill energy. Also, there is an option to just… reset and pick a different act and challenge completely if you realize what you went with was too much and isn't working. They're little things, which help.

Also, there's the fact that you don't have to power through Exhausted Man if you are getting annoyed or exhausted. You can take breaks and come back to it. I'd recommend playing it that way! I rushed through, for the sake of the review, and it wasn't ideal.

Besides, it isn't like the controls are really ever working against you when you play Exhausted Man, especially compared to other physics games. I did have some trouble with building up "ladders" out of items. However, moving around the avatar and generally completing tasks is pretty easy. The character is responsive, and the only time I'd ever get tripped up is if the person started slithering around awkwardly shaped items (like the large toy dragon) or ones that move (like the spinning chair. The physics are on point, and it's possible to use momentum and the generally tight controls to accomplish any tasks.

I love the concept behind Exhausted Man and feel like it is a genuinely clever game, but the nature of some of the tasks mean it's best played in short bursts. Going into too many challenges at once, especially if you end up with a forced task or one that ends up being more annoying than expected, might even feel a bit stressful. Still, the concept is sound and I do recommend it! Just take your time and don't rush.

Exhausted Man is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
