Of all the enemies in Blizzard's action RPG game Diablo, The Butcher remains a fan favourite. His penchant for fresh produce (specifically meat) and undying rage have etched him into Sanctuary's bloodstained history books, but he doesn't return as just a straightforward Diablo 4 boss, instead ambushing players at random. At an exclusive developer Q and A in London, I asked Blizzard why.

Have A Nice Death's dark art and quick-slashing combat bring Hollow Knight to mind, but it has more in common with Hades and Dead Cells. One of the things it has in common with those games is that it was released in early access. After a little more than a year, version 1.0 arrived this week, bringing a final area, a new boss, and the end of its storyline.

Go-Go Town! has more than a little Animal Crossing about it, as players become mayor of a cutesy fixer-upper town and start doing oddjobs to attract new visitors and inhabitants. It differs in several key ways too, thankfully, from its more urban setting, its tactile power tools, and the ability to automate a lot of the gathering and crafting by putting residents to work for you. I somehow missed the news two weeks ago that Wargroove 2 was on the way. The actual successor to a spiritual successor to Advance Wars, Wargroove 2 is another 2D turn-based strategy game, but with new factions, a new roguelike mode, and a new co-developer.

There's also a demo available to play right now, although only until the end of the weekend.

I really enjoyed dark fantasy adventure Roki when it first released back in 2020, and keen to see what developers Polygon Treehouse have gotten up to since, I jumped at the opportunity to play the PAX East demo for Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island. You can watch my impressions of the demo in the video below:

In Mythwrecked you play as Alex, a backpacker who has washed up on the sun-drenched shores of Ambrosia Island. As she begins exploring, she soon realises that this island seems to be a hot spot for the gods from ancient Greek myths. Your task is to befriend each god, help them restore their memories, and find a way back to civilisation.

From playing the demo, you can see much of what made Roki fun reflected in Mythwrecked. The environments are interesting to poke around in, puzzles are breezy brain ticklers, and it has Polygon Treehouse's sense of humour. Each Greek god has a humerous twist on their lore, and during the demo I had a fun time chatting with Hermes, who is dressed in nothing more than a pair of skimpy white speedos and a matching white sweat band - a bold choice of attire.

Sixtar Gate: Startrail Switch Still Needs a Few More Adjustments

The Switch has become something of a haven for rhythm games, with big names like Project Diva and Taiko no Tatsujin, Japanese titles like Groove Coaster, and ones that fall under the indie label like Cytus Alpha, Deemo and Voez making themselves at home. Sixtar Gate: Startrail, which is in early access on PCs via Steam, is the latest to appear. It's not without its charm, but my experience makes me wonder if the PC version is the better suited to what it is trying to do.

There are three modes in Sixtar Gate: Startrail on the Switch. Adventure Mode is a story mode. You go through songs, seeing events in-between. Sometimes, you can choose your difficulty level! Other times, you're stuck and locked into, say, a 15 difficulty track when you've been playing on 3-5 while you get used to the notes. Travel Mode is a freeplay option that lets you go through any unlocked track one at a time, at any difficulty you'd like. Outer Space is a challenge mode that involves three preselected songs at determined difficulties that you must pass to unlock more. It's quite a bit of variety, though the story features localization issues and I'm not a fan of it deciding its difficulty for me.

Sixtar Gate: Startrail Switch Still Needs a Few More Adjustments

The gameplay itself is great! However, the more I play, the more I suspect Sixtar Gate: Startrail might be better on the PC than the Switch. Indicators fall from the top of the screen to a judgment line in time with the music. You "play" along using the face buttons, analog sticks, and triggers. During a song, the gear will sometimes expand to add or remove an additional note hit with the right or Y button to the mix. The track listing is filled with a pretty adequate array of titles.

However, It's the little things about Sixtar Gate: Startrail that begin to add up. For example, the hit sound for notes is incredibly faint. When I leapt into the Adventure Mode to kick things off, I didn't even realize there were any hit sounds at all. In order to get them to a somewhat reasonable degree, I needed to head into Travel Mode to access the options menu to fiddle with things. The audio is hidden under Advanced Settings, and only by setting Music Level to 50 and other noises to between 50 and 80, while leaving hit sound at 100, did it start to get more reasonable.

Speaking of which, even finding the options and figuring out what you're doing is a bit of a task. There there brief introductions that come up when you first enter the Adventure, Travel, or Outer Space modes. However, there's no tutorial to introduce the inputs or gameplay. It isn't too complicated, especially since its UI resembles titles like Beatmania DJMax, but is a lot to suddenly toss people into a song without familiarizing them with what each note means. Especially since there's no way to customize inputs to your liking. For example, when I began I kept pressing the L and R buttons for trigger notes, rather than ZL and ZR. I still make that mistake, because it isn't comfortable for someone who's spent the last year playing Taiko no Tatsujin games. I keep wanting to use the left, down, B, and A buttons for inputs, rather than left, up, X, and A, because again there's a familiarity.

I suppose this gets most frustrating when the movement notes come into play. These are performed using the left and right analog sticks. You even get a telegraphed warning. But because of the way I'm forced to hold my Switch in handheld mode when playing Sixtar Gate: Startrail, I can really only use the left analog stick. Anyone familiar with rhythm games knows that if there is a trickier note like that with two input options, it behooves you to be able to switch between the them based on what that hand is doing at the time. So if I'm busy with a left or up input with my left hand, but my right is pressing X and has A coming up, I can't really alternate.

Sixtar Gate: Startrail Switch Still Needs a Few More Adjustments

It's especially odd that there isn't that customization option, as Sixtar Gate: Startrail lets you adjust pretty much everything else. You can change how your hitsound, gear, notes, and judge line appear. The note speed can be adjusted. You can determine if you want widgets to appear that show your combo counter, judgment, or how far you are through the song and decide where they appear on your gear's screen.

Sixtar Gate: Startrail does a lot of things right. The customization options are handy, though largely cosmetic. I enjoyed the songs and the aesthetic. I just wish the Switch version of Sixtar Gate: Startrail did a better job of introducing itself and adjusting its control schemes to make it a bit more comfortable.

Sixtar Gate: Startrail is available on the Nintendo Switch. It is in early access on Steam.

fire emblem engage fell xenologue

Nintendo released some new trailers that showcase the parallel world that the Fell Xenologue will take place in in Fire Emblem Engage. The Fell Xenologue will be part of Wave 4 (the final wave) of DLC in the Expansion Pass and in it, you'll be able to see counterparts of characters you that you're familiar with in the main game.

The first video shows the Four Wings version of Zelestia speaking with Alear. She explains that the Four Wings is an organization of four knights that protect Lady Nel and Nil. However, those familiar with the original game will recognize Zelestia as Zephia, a member of the Four Hounds. That was a far more antagonistic group than the Four Wings will be.

https://twitter.com/FireEmblemJP/status/1639162432886284290

The second video focuses on Celine and Alfred. In the actual Fire Emblem Engage story, the two of them have a very close relationship. But that's not how it looks to be in the Fell Xenologue. Celine's attitude towards Alfred is very sharp, as you can tell from her tone, and she aggressively pushes a reluctant Alfred into invading Brodia.

https://twitter.com/FireEmblemJP/status/1639162932415320065

Previously, Nintendo shared what the gameplay would be like in the Fell Xenologue chapters of Fire Emblem Engage. Since this is a parallel world, you will not have access to your units. You'll only be able to bring characters of a set starting class, level, and inventory, which means that you might have to change your strategies. On the flip side, characters who die will return at the end of the chapter no matter what.

Fire Emblem Engage is readily available on the Nintendo Switch. The Fell Xenolgue DLC will come out on April 5, 2023.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNFbMn25CGg

Fate/strange Fake was originally going to air at the end of 2022 as part of the New Year. However, delays in order to improve its overall quality pushed it until the summer instead. Ryogo Narita, who wrote works such as Baccano, was the author of the original light novel. It revolves around a botched Holy Grail War that ended up summoning a number of fakes who would normally not even be heroes.

Fate/strange Fake will air on July 2, 2023 and premiere in Los Angeles in Summer 2023.
