This is a conversation that I'm sure has played out countless times across kitchens and living rooms around the world as children, friends and partners patiently try and explain the difference between a video game universe and a tabletop wargaming universe. I just don't know if it's ever been done so smoothly.

One of the joys of Halo is its replayability. Ask any devotee and you'll get some story about endlessly rerunning "The Library" in Halo: Combat Evolved, or replaying Halo 2's "Delta Halo" to get out of bounds and explore that uncannily Canada-looking mountain range. Sadly, at least at launch, you can't do any of that…

Euro Truck Simulator 2's free 1.43 update will

1.43 is the next big, free update for both American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2, and it's set to introduce features like ownable dumpers and new viewpoints. The devs at SCS Software have confirmed that it's also introducing a brand-new truck, which will "tick off a 'debt' we've had towards all the MAN TGX truck lovers for some time".

The MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 will be available as of 1.43, as the devs explain in their blog post. "In this upcoming update for Euro Truck Simulator 2, along with all the other new content, we bring new parts and customization options that will allow you to upgrade your current MAN TGX to the long-requested EfficientLine 3 version." You'll be able grab the EfficientLine 3 option either as an upgrade at a repair shop, or as a new vehicle at MAN dealerships.

On top of that, SCS says "our vehicle artists are already working hard on multiple new vehicles for both ATS and ETS2". There's no clear indication of whether those'll land during 1.43 or later, however.

Minecraft modders overhaul 1.18 with 85 new biomes

Minecraft 1.18 is officially here, and the revamped world generation has created some astounding new vistas. Yet, as ever, modders are at work expanding on Mojang's game, and Terralith 2.0 has arrived with a host of features to make world generation even more impressive. Best of all, it's not even technically a Minecraft mod.

The Terralith 2.0 datapack "adds over 85 brand-new biomes, as well as updating almost every vanilla biome with new and improved features," as the devs at Stardust Labs explain. Just a few screenshots will sell how much new stuff there is here - the volcanoes alone are enough to knock my proverbial socks off.

The new biomes and terrain adjust things both above and below ground, and there's a big variety of biome types, too. You'll see plenty of realistic biome types, alongside more exotic locales like "Skylands, Moonlight Grove, and even the elusive Mirage Isles".

Gory Tetris roguelike Loot River now has a demo

Swords and spells are all fine and dandy, but what if you could make the dungeon itself into a weapon? That's the basic idea behind Loot River, a Tetris-inspired action-roguelike indie game that's due out next year. If that sounds interesting to you, we have good news: there's a demo you can try out right now.

The demo lets you play through Loot River's tutorial and two short levels, which should be enough to whet your appetite. Developer straka.studio calls Loot River an "island-shifting action-roguelike" - the first part of that is based on the fact that you can move pieces of the dungeon floor around like Tetris blocks, while the second part refers to the fact that it's all procedurally generated.

You play as a hyperviolent person in a plague doctor's mask, using an ancient relic to control the movement of the floor. Even with the ability to move the floating floor tiles at will, you'll still need to be quick on your feet: the dungeons are filled with terrifying beasts, nomads, and boss encounters.

You can now eat pizza in FFXIV while eating pizza in real life

If you're a fan of both Final Fantasy XIV and food, Square Enix has got a deal for you - and by 'deal', I mean another promotional tie-in with a third-party company offering a special bonus in FFXIV. A Grubhub x Final Fantasy XIV promotion is giving players a free emote that'll let your Warrior of Light enjoy a well-earned slice of pizza in the MMORPG.

From Thursday, December 9 at 4:30pm PST / 7:30pm EST to Wednesday, December 15 at 8:59pm PST / 11:59pm EST, any Grubhub order of $15 USD or more (before tax and tip) will get you the Eat Pizza emote in FFXIV. You just have to use the promo code 'Endwalker'. You can get the full details at the official site. (The promo also includes free deliveries during The Game Awards.)

The promo has already caused some consternation among FFXIV fans, as Grubhub is only available in North America, and even then, app-based delivery services aren't always feasible to use in the more rural stretches of the region.

     Tradespeople wanted in New World

There are plenty of ways to level up in Amazon's MMO New World. If decking yourself out in a full set of armour and setting off into the wilderness to slay enemies doesn't appeal to you today, why not go foraging and put together a tasty picnic for your allies to take with them when they head out to war? Or spend a few hours chopping wood and handcrafting artisanal furniture for your house?

You can, theoretically, reach level 60 without even harming another creature - though you might have to ask someone else to collect the meat for your stew. As you level up your gathering, refining, and crafting skills, you gain access to higher recipe tiers to make better items. These skills take a long time to maximise, so master-level jewelcrafters or weaponsmiths are in great demand.

Even if you don't plan to dedicate your New World career to perfecting a trade skill, it's still worth taking a short detour to mine an iron vein or chop some trees, as you gain experience alongside a bounty of resources you can refine, sell, or hand in at the town board.

Anno 1800 gets a fourth season pass after drawing two million city builder fans

Anno 1800 has proven to be one of the most popular city-building games of the modern era - so much so that its developers just can't stop making new content. Ubisoft has announced Anno 1800 Season 4, which will bring another three DLC packs to the game in 2022, this time focused on expanding the New World.

"Following Season 3's focus on further fleshing out the Old World, we will now turn our eyes to the New World," the devs explain in the announcement. They "won't be adding an all-new session to the game", but they will address the New World building space issues during Season 4. The three DLC packs will be released throughout 2022, and each will once again be accompanied by a free game update. Each DLC release will also include at least one new scenario.

Full details on Season 4 content will be revealed in March 2022. For now, you can look forward to the free game update 13 on December 14, which will include the Eden Burning scenario, alongside the launch of the Plant-a-Tree DLC supporting tree-planting charity Ecologi. There are plenty more details on next week's content at the official site.

FromSoftware debuted the first in-game footage of Elden Ring at Summer Game Fest Kick Off Live, and there may be more at the next big event hosted by Geoff Keighley. The Game Awards is scheduled to broadcast on Thursday, December 9, and Keighley is hyping up the show's announcements in even grander terms than usual.

"Summer Game Fest was a new thing that I had created," Keighley tells USA Today. "The fact that FromSoftware bet on me and Summer Game Fest where they could have done more traditional E3 stuff, that meant a lot to me. It was a huge honor to work with the From guys, so stay tuned, there may be more coming."

Referring to the Elden Ring trailer at Kick Off Live, Keighley says there are "probably four or five things of that level" at The Game Awards. He adds that "probably six or ten of our games are things that people don't know exist, but we're going to reveal them at the show in a fun way". (Keighley previously said that there would be 40 to 50 games at the show altogether.)

Call of Duty: Warzone devs walkout following reported QA layoffs

A group of Raven Software employees are walking out to protest Activision Blizzard's reported decision to lay off a dozen quality assurance staffers, which most notably work on Call of Duty: Warzone. As shared to Twitter by Axios' Stephen Totilo, the group released a statement calling for the 12 game testers to be offered full-time jobs alongside the rest of the Raven QA team.

"These individuals were let go in 'good standing', meaning they had not underperformed or committed any fireable offence," the statement reads. "The majority of those who were not let go on December 3 are still unsure about the status of their employment. These personnel cuts come after five weeks of overtime, and before an anticipated end of year crunch. The QA team, which at this point in time mainly works on Call of Duty: Warzone, so far has been reduced by just over 30%."

The statement goes on to say that the team was told "multiple times" by leadership that positive departmental changes were coming, which was also the reason no one on the team received standard promotions or raises that allegedly should have been in place by March 2021.

FFXIV Endwalker release time – get your registration code ready after early access

December 6, 2021 Registration for the launch version of Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is open.

After one last delay, the Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker release date finally lands this week - though if you've been looking forward to the game, there's a decent chance you've already been playing in early access. If this is your first go on a new FFXIV expansion launch, you might not have known that you need another registration code to keep playing after the official launch.

Even if you're already playing Endwalker in early access, you'll need to input that additional registration code on the Mog Station to keep playing. Early access codes will cease granting access to the game on December 10 at 11:59pm PST (December 11 at 2:59am EST) for North American servers, or December 10 at 11:59pm GMT for European servers, as the devs explain.

You can input your registration code on the Mog Station as of today. You should receive the code via whichever retailer you purchased Endwalker from. On Steam, you'll find the code in the 'CD key' section of the game properties menu. If you purchased Endwalker through the Square Enix store, you should find your code on the order status page.

If I had to describe Mechajammer in a word, that word would be "brown". A second would be the sounds Joe Pesci makes in Home Alone.

When the first few dilemmas you face in an RPG aren't ethical or character ones, but about whether it would be more tedious to continue with this character or to play through the introduction again, you know there's a problem. By my third restart I'd abandoned all interest in playing any character I wanted, and started trying to estimate whatever would get this over with sooner. Mechajammer is a disaster. And not only because of the bugs.

Baiken Guilty Gear Strive DlcIt's a beautiful day to be a Guilty Gear Strive fan, as a favorite is making a triumphant return. Baiken will be Guilty Gear Strive's next DLC character, and she's getting the Arc System Works' preferential treatment the whole way through. She is one of the franchise's standout characters, frequently making appearances in other games such as Samurai Shodown, and Arc System Works is responding in turn. Her special trailer showcases a new stage that will release with Baiken, which is adorned with a beautiful looking sunset and autumn leaves. But in a cruel twist of fate, the trailer didn't show off any of her gameplay. Even though the previous trailers for other DLC characters gave us a brief glimpse at how they would play, Baiken is getting the too-cool-for-school minimalistic treatment. She just shows up, looks neat, then bounces. I guess that's pretty hype.   One-eyed warrior Baiken was revealed during CEO 2021, one of the first major ...

Well before the expansion's official release on December 7, scores of fans logged into the Final Fantasy XIV servers to try Endwalker early, with some queues reaching well above 5,000 players. But as it turns out, this massive collective hype surrounding Endwalker has a major downside, as players have found themselves waiting through extremely long queue times, with many of them ending up booted out of the queues outright. Naturally, the developers have taken notice of these login issues and expressed their condolences. They have offered Final Fantasy XIV players seven days of free game time to make up for it.   Server overload Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida discussed the specifics surrounding the long queue times on the game's news blog.
