Remember last week? It happened about 34 years ago, so if you don't, I understand. But last Thursday, the official EA Twitter account tweeted a bad joke about single-player games that led to an internet-wide roasting and eventually an apology from the Battlefield publisher. And apparently, EA is still dealing with…

Fall Guys player count bounds past 50 million in a fortnight

The Fall Guys player count continues to spring from strength to strength, as the bean battle royale game bounces past 50 million users in just its first two weeks as a free-to-play game. The colourful soft-play crash course extravanganza relaunched in its newest format as Fall Guys: Free For All on June 21, seeing huge initial success with 20 million players hopping on board in the first 48 hours.

Now Mediatonic has announced on Twitter that the game has reached 50 million players. "We're in absolute disbelief," they tweeted, adding a message of thanks to everyone who has joined the fray over this past fortnight. It's an incredible milestone, and it'll be interesting to see where the ceiling ends up being - right now, it seems like the sky's the limit.

Anyone who purchased Fall Guys prior to the launch of Free For All now has access to a special legacy pack, which awards veteran players a few cosmetic items to show off with. They also receive the first free-to-play season pass free of charge.

This Fortnite map has its own take on Overwatch 2

Fortnite and Overwatch 2 aren't necessarily games you'd put together, but that's not going to stop the creative community from making a Fortnite map that puts Activision Blizzard's new hero shooter into Epic's battle royale. This new creative map has players fighting off against each other in teams of five, and aside from looking incredibly pretty, it also looks like a blast to play and comes from someone who's got a fair bit of experience creating fun maps.

Genshin Impact 3.0 release date speculation and more

When is the Genshin Impact 3.0 release date? Similar to the huge 2.0 update which released the region, Inazuma, along with the Electro vision and a host of new characters - it looks like 3.0 could be just as big.

If the latest rumours are true, the Genshin Impact 3.0 update could showcase the Dendro element, Archon quests, hangout events, new characters, and of course the region, Sumeru. There should be a new story arc, and hopefully an epic boss encounter like Raiden Shogun, who went on to become a playable character.

So here's everything that we've seen so far. It's worth noting, these are based on rumours and we do not currently have a firm release date for 3.0.

Genshin Impact events – all current and upcoming events

Want to know more about the upcoming Genshin Impact events? A new version of Genshin Impact arrives every six weeks, complete with new characters, quests, and events. It's difficult to keep track of which events are currently running and if there are any new ones coming soon, so here's a schedule for all current and upcoming Genshin Impact events.

There are usually a number of Genshin Impact events running simultaneously, and they aren't just in-game events. When a new Genshin Impact character joins the game, the devs launch a web event at the same time - players learn about the latest characters through an interactive story told through a web browser. The rewards for completing different events range from in-game items like primogems and mora, to real life prizes like mouse mats and plushies.

Just like the Genshin Impact banners, most events are only available for a limited time, so it's worth participating as soon as you can. New events are usually added to Genshin Impact after an update, but it's worth keeping an eye out on this page as the devs do like to surprise the community.

Total War Warhammer 3 ranged units hold their fire once more

Total War: Warhammer 3 ranged units can no longer fire freely through friendly forces in the strategy game, as a recent buff allowing them to ignore friendly units in line of sight is reverted by Creative Assembly in a new hotfix. The change, intended to make ranged units fire more reliably, lead to a rather hilarious but unquestionably busted strategy of stacking large numbers of units directly on top of one another.

The original change reads as follows: "To prevent instances where ranged units hold their fire because a friendly unit is in the line of fire, overlapping units are now considered part of the same unit. This should ensure that ranged units can more consistently carry out firing orders." However, Creative Assembly admits that its implementation was "a bit overzealous."

"Not only did it address the LOS issue," Creative Assembly says in a post addressing the hotfix, "it allowed ranged units to stack and fire in a way that largely negates the importance of positioning your troops." Positioning is a critical part of the strategy that makes Total War battles special, so this change definitely felt out of place.

How to get FIFA 23 early access

Want to get early access to FIFA 23? There's nothing better than getting your hands on an upcoming game before launch, and the advantages of gaining early access to FIFA 23 can be significant if you play Ultimate Team. If you use your FIFA 23 early access time effectively, you can build a solid team ready to take on the world and start trading to get ahead on the transfer market.

It's important to note that FIFA 23 early access hasn't been officially confirmed by EA, but we don't expect EA to deviate from their usual launch day plans. FIFA may be one of the biggest sports games in the world, but only a fraction of the game's audience end up utilising the early access period. If the early access system works as it usually does, players should be able to play FIFA 23 ten days before it lands on store shelves.

Diablo Immortal Horadrim Vessels location guide

Looking to collect the Diablo Immortal Horadrim Vessels? There's an optional system in Blizzard's loot-obsessed ARPG that lies under the quest, Legacy of the Horadrim. This path, if you choose to take it, boasts rewards that permanently buff your character in nine different ways - one for each Horadrim vessel you find. Not only that, but you can utilise all nine at the same time, if you put in the graft to find them all, that is. These buffs include boosting stats in damage, armour, life, and potency to name but a few.

While the majority of Diablo Immortal Horadrim Vessels are obtained by defeating world bosses such as Blood Rose and Hydra on Hell I difficulty, there are a few other locations you'll need to visit and quests you'll need to complete in order to gather them all. Whether you're looking to collect them all or maybe you're just looking to focus on a few, we've outlined their location below, how to retrieve them, and what these powerful artefacts have to offer your character should you choose to hunt them down.

Outriders has the story Warframe wishes it did

OK, so forgive the attention-grabbing headline, but stick with us on this one. Outriders, the fast-paced looter-shooter from gunplay experts People Can Fly, may be best remembered for its glorious violence and explosive weaponry, but its story deserves a shout out, combining deadly viruses, power-hungry villains, and a world that is desperate to kill you and everyone you know.

A good story is what keeps players coming back after all, and Outriders certainly provides. Nobody should feel prohibited from understanding a game just because they jumped in too late, or find half the info about the game's world isn't actually available inside the game itself.

And with Outriders' new Worldslayer expansion, the action and excitement is getting kicked up another notch, with a new faction led by a new villain to contend with, as well as new environments to explore, weapons to use, and classes to delve into. And it's all tied together with an epic story which you can jump straight into, whether you're a first-time player or a veteran of Enoch.

UK competition authority investigates Microsoft Activision deal

Microsoft's deal to acquire Activision Blizzard for $68 billion is being investigated by the UK's CMA (Competition and Markets Authority). It was expected that several worldwide competition groups would look into the deal between the Xbox owners and the studio behind IPs including Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, and more due to its mammoth nature. If it is approved, the deal will be the largest in the history of the game industry.

"The Competition and Markets Authority is considering whether it is or may be the case that this transaction, if carried into effect, will result in the creation of a relevant merger situation under the merger provisions of the Enterprise Act 2002," reads the CMA's statement. The investigation aims to ascertain whether the acquisition might "result in a substantial lessening of competition" within UK markets.

The first phase of the investigation begins on July 6. There is an initial period with open invitation to comment which runs from July 6 - 20, during which the CMA "invites comments on the transaction from any interested party."

     Best gaming VPN in 2022

The best VPN for gaming will help you to access servers that might not normally be available to you, stop your internet service provider (ISP) from artificially limiting your bandwidth, protect you from DDoS attacks from the sore losers you defeat online, and provide countless other benefits.

While virtual private networks are known to slightly lower download speeds, that's not always the case. Internet service providers often throttle your speeds when you engage in bandwidth-heavy activities such as gaming, but since the best gaming VPN hides what you're doing from prying eyes, ISPs are none the wiser when you're connected to one. They also keep your IP address private, which is an important step towards maintaining your internet anonymity.

Not all VPNs are built equally, however, and free versions just don't cut it. Fortunately, you can offset the cost of the subscription by using the VPN to hunt for better deals on games that are cheaper in other regions. You'll get more for your money if you subscribe in bulk, as a year costs less overall than the monthly subscription - and if you're still not convinced, you can try them out for yourself, as each of our suggestions has a free trial.

Dragon Age is one of my favourite game series. I replayed Dragon Age: Origins recently not for this column, but for fun. That's the kind of wild gal I am. Origins was one of the reasons I got into PC gaming, because my dinky laptop wasn't good enough to run it and I was desperate to play it after seeing the trailers. I spaffed some of my student loan on a new desktop and spent four months eating nothing but cheese sandwiches. At the time it felt worth it. Watching those trailers now is like opening a time capsule full of fantasy tropes and, for some reason, an incongruous chugging guitar song by someone we don't need to mention ever again.

Replaying it now is a different experience. It's still a really cool RPG, notable for very good world-building and a cast of interesting characters (that you can have sex with in a cold tent), and it continues to hold a dear place in my heart. On the other hand, there's a whole section that's such a mind-numbing slog to get through that everyone hates it and there's a mod specifically to remove it from the entire game. Origins is a game I very much like, yet sometimes struggle to explain why it is good. But I'm not alone in thinking so, 'cos in 2009 this was RPS's Game Of The Year. Can't blame me for that. I didn't even work here then.

In the 100 or so hours I've spent playing Death Stranding in the last couple of years, I've often wondered about the state of Sam Bridges' limbs. Specifically, the strain they must be under carrying those preposterously high columns of metal cased packages up and down the slopes of post-apocalyptic America. If I were in his hiking boots, I'm not sure all the reinforced skeletons in the world would help me reach the same kind of porter-ing skills as he does gambolling about the place, at least not based on how sore and tired my dinky little wrists are after a couple of hours of playing Strange Scaffold's new Strand-type game, Witch Strandings. Yes, that's right. Someone other than Hideo Kojima has made a so-called Strand-like, and it's quite possibly the strangest game you'll play all year.

This week, far too much of my brainspace has been occupied by the JiuShark M.2-Three: a tower-style cooler for NVMe SSDs that's just launched in China. Honestly, look at it. For days I've been absorbing these images of a baby CPU air cooler, yoked to the dinkiest of PC storage, and I still can't decide if it's brilliant or just sheer crawling madness.

Except, in the not-so-distant future, there's a chance that active SSD cooling won't seem so excessive at all. That's because PCIe 5.0 drives are coming and, while they're set to outpace even the best SSDs that use the current-gen PCIe 4.0 interface, it sounds like such speed will come at the cost of higher temperatures. And, in turn, a higher risk of throttling.

Lollipop Chainsaw Remake James Gunn Suda51

American screenwriter and director James Gunn, as well as Grasshopper Manufacture founder Suda51 clarified that they will not be working on the upcoming Lollipop Chainsaw remake. This means that while publisher Dragami Games' effort involves development staff that worked on the original release of Lollipop Chainsaw, some key writers and creators from that time will not be part of the remake's development.

News of the remake's development came a few weeks after Dragami Games CEO Yoshimi Yasuda teased a revival back in June 2022. The announcement revealed a tentative 2023 release window, though details were still relatively scarce. However, Yasuda also stated that the "original staff" would be working on the remake, albeit with some elements that were "different from the original".

Speculation within the fan community and through news coverage led James Gunn, one of the writers of the original Lollipop Chainsaw, to clarify that he was not part of the remake. In a quote tweet, Gunn stated that Dragami Games did not approach him or Suda to work on the project. Furthermore, he had only heard of the remake from Suda a few weeks prior. However, Gunn also expressed that this was neither a condemnation nor an endorsement of the remake.

https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1544357353318797312?s=20&t=RbaCQbWpPyFqjIgVXlMu4A

Suda later followed up with his own post, adding that Grasshopper Manufacture was also not part of the remake's development. This is noteworthy, as the original Lollipop Chainsaw was a joint development project between Grasshopper Manufacture and the team at Kadokawa Games, which eventually split off into Dragami Games.

https://twitter.com/suda_51/status/1544512577786748928?s=20&t=RbaCQbWpPyFqjIgVXlMu4A

The Lollipop Chainsaw remake is in development at Dragami Games and has a tentative 2023 release window. There is no confirmed price or release platform.

live a live preview

Live A Live, an "HD-2D" remake of the 16-bit RPG, is a particularly special release in the West. While Japanese audiences may have some nostalgia for the original game, this marks the first international appearance for a Square RPG from an era full of beloved releases from the company. In the game's early hours, we've grown to appreciate the game's distinct elements.

The original Live A Live, released on the Super Famicom in 1994, was an experimental release. It remains so in its updated form! It's an anthology of short stories from different creators, all built within the same RPG engine and using the same tactical battle system. The structure is built to tell specific, short narratives. It's not a package full of nuance and depth. Instead, it offers a variety of smaller tales that are often homages to popular genres.

live a live preview distant future

Each chapter has its own setting and feel. The Twilight of Edo Japan is a sneaking mission to assassinate an enemy leader. It's lonely and tense. You're largely alone, and you can get through the whole thing without taking a lot of lives with careful use of the hide button. The Wild West is a classic cowboy tale, with shootouts and standoffs. It's largely built around prepping a town with traps to fight off a bandit gang within a time limit. You learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the townsfolk, mostly by them just telling you they're bad at stuff.

You take the role of a martial arts master, training new apprentices and working to preserve your legacy in the Imperial China chapter. The master doesn't level up, but your choices determine how the students progress. Perhaps the weirdest tale, The Distant Future, is largely free of combat and follows a support droid as it learns things about a spaceship and serves coffee. This might be our favorite? We love our new robot friend Cube.

All the chapters use the same combat: a meter-based grid system, with attacks that reach certain distances. It's very self-contained, as health doesn't persist outside battle. And some abilities? The "range" can be really weird. So it's a matter of careful positioning. Moving fills others' meters for every square, making standing still optimal if you can swing it.

The development team has done a lot of work to make the original environments look nice in the "HD-2D" formula. It's a tough balance! The geometry largely hasn't changed, and that can make it difficult to build coherent rooms in the new perspective. When you play, you'll notice that doors near the "bottom" of the screen can be difficult to spot sometimes, though the game does a lot with lighting to try to mitigate this issue. Notably, the sprites are basically the same, too. Previous games with the look have also gone with muted, stylized color palettes that let blur and particle effects take center stage. Here, the look's a bit less unified, so it can feel off sometimes. But we're not sure if there was a better option.

The new perspective for the combat sequences does bring with it some drawbacks. Most notably, facing larger enemies can lead to confusing hitboxes. The original game was much clearer, with a pure 2D grid. Now, though, you have to remember that "tall" enemies can be hit one or two squares behind. Your player characters are consistently small so they fit on one square, making for a Punch-Out!! feel at times.

We've only explored a few of Live A Live's chapters, and we're looking forward to checking out how the rest put their own spin on the game's systems and trappings. Mostly, though, we're just happy that more players can finally see what the game's all about.

Live A Live, developed by Square Enix and published by Nintendo, will launch July 22, 2022 on the Nintendo Switch. A demo is also available, showing the early parts of three of the game's chapters. Stay tuned to Siliconera for our full review of the game.

Forspoken delayed 2023 octoberInitially scheduled for a spring 2022 release, Forspoken has been delayed a second time to January of 2023. The game's most recent release date was set to October 11, after getting a five-month delay. At the time, developer Luminous Productions stated that "getting it right" was the reason for the delay. Forspoken now has a new PC release date of January 24, 2023. Today's message isn't much different than what we heard before. While the company says "game elements are now complete," Forspoken has been delayed to ensure final polish. Also, for "strategic" reasons. The time should allow the developer to grind down all the edges, plus it means Forspoken can avoid some serious AAA competition — in other words. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to release on October 28. It makes sense that publisher Square Enix would want to vault over that particular gaming goliath.   "We would like to thank you for your continued s...

Horror Games On PcHorror games were traditionally considered a niche genre. They rose to prominence in the late '90s thanks to franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but they began to lose steam in the generations after that. Indie horror titles kept the scene alive, but after the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017, the AAA horror game space has been seeing a wonderful resurgence on PC. Resident Evil 7 proved that the genre can succeed at the highest levels of production. The knock-on effect has been a confident surge of new horror games from other developers and publishers that are no longer afraid to go all in. More exciting horror games are coming out than ever before, and we can feel confident that this golden age of horror is set to continue on PC thanks to the following games.   Scorn Scorn has been on the radar of PC horror game fans for a long time, and it's not hard to understand why.      Battlefield 2042 single-player game halo campaignMore evidence points to a recommitment by EA to the Battlefield franchise after the fallout surrounding Battlefield 2042. This latest development relates to what's on the horizon, and longtime fans may find reason to rejoice at the news. EA opened up a new DICE studio in Seattle, picking up senior talent including Halo co-founder Marcus Lehto. That team is now hiring for more positions, and the job description clearly states that a single-player campaign experience for Battlefield is in the works. The job description is specifically for a design director, which comes with many responsibilities. One of the core objectives is to "embrace the core tenets of the Battlefield franchise and make sure they are woven through all layers of a masterfully designed single player campaign." The design director will "manage the design team and design vision of a new Battlefield campaign."   Reset and reload This is a noticeable shift away from the mindset of previou...

Genshin Impact Version 2.8(1)It's almost easy to forget that version 2.8 of Genshin Impact will release next week after an endless barrage of leaks — and the fact that version 2.7 is still ongoing. While fans cross their arms waiting for Sumeru, we still have a full update to get through. Fortunately, it looks like version 2.8 is full of fun and exciting adventures for Genshin Impact players, including a new character and a temporary islands for travelers to explore on July 13. Fans of last year's summer event will remember the Golden Apple Archipelago, a timed set of islands that was the perfect location to explore. This area was only available during one update, but it will be brought back this year in a reworked state. With completely new zones, puzzles, and stories, it's basically unrecognizable from last year's version. Regardless, it seems like HoYoverse is setting up a yearly tradition for a limited-time, summer-themed island.   Kicking it on the beach The Golden Apple Arc...
