Well look at that, a new trailer for Rise of the Rōnin - the fancy samurai action-RPG from Ninja Gaiden household Team Ninja. Set in 19th century Japan's Bakumatsu era, the game is a mixture of open-ended exploration, sneaking and agile traversal that puts me heavily in mind of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series. Unlike most Assassin's Creeds, however, this one has a pretty in-depth, rigorous melee combat system, with bosses that look like they're going to grind my gears no end. Will it be as vicious as Nioh 2? I'd better start stocking up on comfort food.

Do you want to build a PC? Not ready to give up your older Ryzen motherboard but still want great gaming performance? Previously your only option was the (superb) 5800X3D, which uses a 3D V-Cache to massively boost gaming performance, but now the cheaper 5700X3D is also available.

Made from silicon that wasn't quite good enough to turn into the 5800X3D, these processors boost slightly lower but come with the same complement of extra L3 cache, making them still head and shoulders above models like the 5600X, 5800X, 5900X and even 5950X - not to mention older Ryzen 1000, 2000 and 3000 models.

Following its launch this month, the brand new Ryzen 7 5700X3D is now available from B&H Photo and Amazon in the US for $249 or Amazon UK for £233, a great price that undercuts the $308 5800X3D significantly. Here's some links:

Square Enix Announces Merger of Tokyo RPG Factory Subsidiary

Square Enix announced the merger of the Tokyo RPG Factory subsidiary. The company will take over the rights and obligations of the subsidiary after the dissolution of the studio on January 31, 2024. [Thanks, Gamebiz!]

The studio was originally founded in 2014 under the "Tokyo Dream Factory" name by then Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda. The company was a subsidiary of Square Enix. Later, it was officially established as in June 2015.

The studio is behind the development of I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear, and Oninaki, which released in 2016, 2017, and 2019 respectively. The first two titles are turn-based RPGs inspired by the SNES/Super Famicom era of RPGs, and the games share gameplay and story elements from titles like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy X. Meanwhile, Oninaki is an action-RPG with a focus on the theme of life, death, and rebirth.

In August 2020, Square Enix reported big losses from both its Tokyo RPG Factory and Studio Istolia subsidiaries. The later was led by former Tales series producer Hideo Baba. Studio Istolia closed down on May 2019 after the cancelation of its first game Project Prelude Rune.

Square Enix announced the merger of its Tokyo RPG Factory subsidiary on January 31, 2024.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Combat

During the January 2024 Sony State of Play, a new trailer for the much-awaited Silent Hill 2 remake was released, finally giving viewers a taste of what they can expect from combat. I watched the footage, puzzled as to what I saw. A part of me understands why changes were made — a new audience doesn't want to deal with "bad" controls — but I feel like something was lost as James Sunderland staggered enemies by shooting them in the knees or blasting a Bubble Head Nurse in the head with a shotgun.

Image via Konami

While Team Silent may or may not have intentionally made the combat in those first four Silent Hill games clunky, it served a greater purpose within the Survival Horror genre. A majority of the most popular Japanese Horror games of the time functioned on Tank Controls, which arguably isn't great and requires some getting used to.

But the fact that it was so unwieldy and unrefined created a sense of tension, and in the case of Silent Hill 2, really let the player know that James was, for the most part, in over his head. He's an average man with a heavy conscience, a villain in his own story, but I won't say more than that for the sake of spoilers. The game may be old, but it's effectively been inaccessible for years. And the Silent Hill 2 remake will be their first taste of one of the most influential Japanese Horror games ever made.

I'm not saying this to be a curmudgeon, either. The controls in the Silent Hill series up until Homecoming, which Team Silent didn't develop, were pretty abysmal and received criticism from major outlets until the games effectively changed direction. What concerns me about Silent Hill 2 is that the combat looks extremely similar to the Resident Evil 4 remake.

Image via Konami

There isn't anything wrong with that, but Silent Hill 2 isn't meant to make the player feel good while controlling James. He swings steel pipes with a sort of desperation, throwing his entire body behind the strike because he's never clubbed someone to death before. That's important. James has the capability to enact brutality (talking lead pipes, planks of wood, etc.) on others, but he hasn't until this point. Maybe James has shot a gun before. Who knows.

One could argue semantics over that for the shift to the over-the-shoulder camera. Or you could say that Bloober Team probably just wanted the game to feel better in terms of controls or that there was potential pressure to chase the success of the Resident Evil series — much like the original Silent Hill had. It makes Silent Hill 2 feel less tense and more like a power fantasy. Resident Evil 4, for all of its merits, was a shift in the genre. But you were also playing a member of that universe's secret service.

It was campy and packed with action, but it knew how to keep that tension strong by restricting players to standing still while shooting. James slapping around enemies with a plank of wood, shooting enemies with precision, and having that larger free range of movement without some kind of restriction eliminates that. And it impacts the atmosphere of the game. Why would I be afraid of enemies if I can just aim for the head and shoot? Why would I be afraid of fighting more than one enemy at a time if James could just barrel through them with a wooden plank in hand?

Image via Konami

It just doesn't sit right. I don't know. I'm probably overthinking it. Silent Hill 2 isn't even my favorite game in the series. But it's strange to feel a sense of loss over something that added to the general experience of the game. Maybe there will be a greater sense of weight to James and the combat once I get my hands on the game. Maybe there won't be. However, as of right now, the footage I've seen doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.

The Silent Hill 2 remake is in development for PS5 and PC.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Reveals Warfarer Vocation in New Trailer

Capcom showcased the Warfarer vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2 with a new trailer during the January 2024 State of Play broadcast. The Warfarer is a class exclusive to the Arisen that can use every weapon and learn different skills from each vocation.

The Warfarer is a jack of all trades and will have lower base stats than the rest of the vocations. The lowered stats will require players to use the vocation's weapon and skill versatility to their advantage to keep up with other specialized vocations.

In addition, the new trailer showed the Dragonsplague, a contagious condition that affects pawns as they travel between worlds. Instead of weakening pawns, Dragonsplage will enhance their performance and make them become bolder in their behavior.

Vocational maisters are one of the new features that will be included in Dragon's Dogma 2. Players can encounter vocation maisters in the game who have fully mastered their vocation. By deepening their relationship with the maisters, players will unlock their vocations or grant special benefits.

FFVII Rebirth Getting Its Own State of Play Showcase in February

At the end of the January 2024 State of Play, Sony announced a February 6, 2024 FFVII Rebirth State of Play showcase. That presentation will focus entirely on the RPG ahead of its debut later in the month.

Very few details came up regarding what this additional presentation could discuss. Additional gameplay footage will appear. There will also supposedly be detail and "exciting news." This could be a reference to some sort of demo that will be released ahead of the game's debut. As a reminder, Square Enix did release a Final Fantasy VII Remake demo back in March 2020 for the PS4. That showed up just ahead of its release.

The last bit of footage shared about the game was a brief clip on FFVII Day. It showed footage of Cloud playing the piano in FFVII Rebirth's new free-play minigame and element. In it, it showed how someone could use the feature to play original songs, as the video has him playing "Happy Birthday."

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come to the PS5 on February 29, 2024, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and FFVII Ever Crisis is available on the PC and mobile devices.

At the January 2024 State of Play, Sony and Mintrocket announced both the Dave the Diver PS4 and PS5 ports and Godzilla DLC. The game is already on the Switch and PC

The new trailer began by confirming that yes, the game is coming to the PS4 and PS5. Duff is sitting on a couch, holding a Dualsense 5, and playing the game. From there, a bit of footage appeared. Once that was done, it confirmed an April 2024 release window.

However, after the halfway point of the footage, the new crossover appeared. Godzilla then rises from the Blue Hole and towers over everything. That's confirmed to be a free DLC for the game. That will appear in May 2024.

Here's the new footage.

There's already one free bit of free crossover DLC for the game. Back in December 2023, Dredge showed up in it.

Dave the Diver is on the Switch and PC now, PS4 and PS5 versions are coming in April 2024, and the Godzilla DLC will launch in May 2024.

Sonic x Shadow Generations

A new Sonic game titled Sonic X Shadow Generations was announced at the Sony State of Play event. The game is in development and set to release on PS4 and PS5 some time in Autumn 2024.

The trailer showed a mix of traditional Sonic racing in both 2D and 3D, as they'd take part in skateboarding, roller-skating, and combat focused sections. This included a boss fight. The game appears to feature three different playable characters: a fully proportioned Sonic, a miniature Sonic, and Shadow. During Shadow's section, he interacts with a single-eyed starfish-like creature, though it is unknown if it will be an ally or enemy.

It went on throughout November and December. As it happened, HoYoVerse shared data on details like number of battles fought, money earned, and when they tended to play. Some new wallpapers were also shared.

This isn't the first HoYoVerse game to show up on a Sony platform. We've also seen Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail appear there as well. The former's 4.4 update just debuted, and the latter is about to get the 2.0 patch in early February 2024.

Zenless Zone Zero will come to the PS5, PC, and mobile devices in 2024. There's no exact release date for it just yet though.
