After the deadly (and delightful) card game of Inscryption, creator Daniel Mullins is returning to his happy land of little horses. Today he announced Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, a new genre-shifting curio described as "a phantasmagorical voyage through time, myth, divinity, and video games." I like that this description is likely wholly earnest and accurate. This news came during the pre-show for Geoff Keighley's Shopping Hour and if a game like this is relegated to the pre-show, I can only assume the main event will include Half-Life 3, Elden Ring 2, and Deus Ex 5.

505 Games have revealed a remake of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, the mournful 2013 fantasy adventure from Josef Fares and Starbreeze Studios. It's due for release on 28th February 2024, and here's the first trailer.

A Tale of Two Sons is notable for having a split control scheme - you steer each brother with a different analog stick, weaving their movements together to bypass obstacles and puzzles. It's also notable for being a sad 'un: your goal in the game is to find a remedy for your sick father, which involves a journey up a mountain to a magical tree.

"It may well look like a kids-friendly game, but be warned that things do get surprisingly dark in places, and you'd end up having some pretty difficult conversations with any little ones once it's over," John Walker (RPS in peace) wrote back in 2013. "These are adult themes, presented in a mature way, via the lives of two fantastic children. And it's well worth your time."

Kyoto Animation fire

Prosecutors against Shinji Aoba, the perpetrator of the 2019 Kyoto Animation arson attack, are seeking the death penalty. The Kyoto District Court will announce its final verdict on January 25, 2024. [Thanks, ANN, NHK, Livedoor!]

As a refresher, the Kyoto Animation arson attack took place on July 18, 2019 when Aoba set fire to Kyoto Animation's Studio 1 building. This fire killed 36 people and injured 34. This makes it one of the deadliest massacres in Japan since the end of World War II. Aoba suspected the studio of plagiarizing a novel he wrote. He had submitted it to Kyoto Animation as part of the studio's contest but did not win.

According to Aoba's defense team, he should be acquitted because he was suffering from delusions at the time of the attack. Another argument from the defense is that he had no idea the fire would reach the second or third floors. He also, according to them, had no way of knowing it would spread that fast. Aoba himself has stated that Tomohiro Kato, the perpetrator behind the 2008 Akihabara massacre, was a major influence on him. In court, according to Livedoor, he repeatedly stated that he empathized with Kato and that he felt they had many things in common. It was while watching his attack that made him feel like he should "do something," which was the arson attack in 2019. Japan executed Kato in 2022 for his murders.

The prosecutors for the case argue that his delusions about plagiarism serve as the motive, but not an excuse. Because of the severity of the attack and the "hell" that the victims went through, their families want to see Aoba punished. The prosecutors also argue that Aoba was completely aware of his actions, as well as the dangers and risks. Family members of the deceased victims have stated to NHK that they want to see Aoba receive the death penalty. They urge both the judge and jury to "make the right decision."

We will know the final sentence of the Kyoto Animation arson case on January 25, 2024.

Baldur's Gate 3 Xbox

The Xbox version of Baldur's Gate 3 saw a surprise release during The Game Awards 2023. The game appeared on Xbox storefronts during the show, although no formal announcement was made during the show itself and Larian Studios waited until after the event to reveal it was available.

The Xbox release was confirmed on social media by Larian Studios. While a new accolades trailer was shown during the ceremony, it did not feature a release date, nor was the surprise release announced on stage. The focus was on showing the praise the game received from various outlets. At the end, it followed with a look at an upcoming physical edition.

An Xbox release has been in the works for a while, and Larian had previously confirmed that the release date would be announced at The Game Awards. This came after it noted multiple times that it was working to ensure this version of the game did make it out in 2023, following the PC release and PS5 debut earlier in the year. A physical Deluxe Edition for both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S has also been confirmed to be coming in 2024. The Xbox version will be released on three discs.

Baldur's Gate 3 is out now for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

honkai star rail penacony

During TGA 2023, HoYoVerse revealed a new trailer teasing Penacony, which is the next stop for the Astral Express in Honkai: Star Rail, and it also showed the two new characters Black Swan and Acheron.

You can watch the trailer here. Black Swan features more prominently in this Honkai: Star Rail footage, however Acheron does make an appearance at the very end. We get to hear the voice acting for both of these newcomers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlOnfjtTBic

The start of the trailer focuses on the Astral Express's adventures in Jarilo-VI, with some references to the events on the Xianzhou Luofu. Black Swan narrates the entire event, with the trailer ending with Acheron's arrival in Penacony. Judging by the trailer and the image that The Game Awards's Twitter account shared, Penacony has a very art deco aesthetic.

According to the "A Story That Never Grows Dull" trailer, Arryn Zech voices Black Swan and Allegra Clark voices Acheron. Zech's previous roles include Blake from RWBY and Gentiane in Girls' Frontline. Clark's roles include Dorothy from Arknights and Mitsuru from Persona 3 Reload.

The Japanese voice actresses are Hitomi Nabatame for Black Swan and Miyuki Swashiro for Acheron. Sawashiro's previous roles include Raiden Shogun from Genshin Impact and Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter 2011. As for Nabatame, she voiced Yuruziha from Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes and Nihilister in Goddess of Victory: Nikke.

Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Penacony will be the next destination for the Trailblazers in Honkai: Star Rail.

apex final fantasy vii rebirth

During TGA 2023, it was announced that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will appear in Apex Legends as part of an upcoming collaboration. It'll start from January 9, 2024.

This announcement came at the end of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth trailer that Square Enix showed. For the collaboration, we can see characters wielding iconic weapons from FFVII such as Cloud's Buster Sword. There is also a key visual for the upcoming Apex Legends collaboration, which Nomura drew.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an upcoming RPG that will serve as a sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake. New characters that made an appearance in the new trailer include Vincent and Cid. As a reminder, you can watch the new trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okGnXYjvJRM&t=73s

Lost Records Dontnod

A new game from Life is Strange developers Don't Nod was revealed at The Game Awards 2023, and it's called Lost Records: Bloom & Rage. It will be released in late 2024.

Here's the first trailer for the title. It starts with a flashback, showing a bunch of teenagers in a band.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpT9NwXxAtg

The premise of Lost Records appears to build on Don't Nod's strengths, featuring a story centered on a group of teens encountering something supernatural. These teens are Swann, Nora, Autumn and Kat, who are in a band together. In 1995, they encounter a glowing crater in the woods. The trailer then skips ahead 27 years to reveal one of the cast as an adult, suggesting a game that skips between the two time periods.

Don't Nod are famous for being the original developers of the Life is Strange franchise. Lost Records is likely to follow a similar formula based on the trailer. Earlier this year, Don't Nod released Jusant, a game about climbing.

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage will be released in late 2024 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.
