Rockstar's super popular Grand Theft Auto franchise is in a weird place in 2021. It's a game series that remains huge, despite going years without a big, new release. Its online iteration is more popular than ever, yet if you look around Reddit and Twitter you'd assume it has no fans.

Final Fantasy VII Remake on Epic accidentally suggests a Steam release

Final Fantasy VII Remake Steam release seems to have been all but confirmed thanks to the recently released Epic Games Store version, ironically enough. Modders digging into the remake's files on Epic have found reference to a Steam release - and have even found its app number, suggesting the page is ready to go.

The release of Final Fantasy VII Remake on PC has been long-awaited and heavily rumoured, so many were relieved to see it finally get announced at The Game Awards earlier this month - for a surprise release last Thursday as an Epic Games Store exclusive, much like fellow Square Enix RPG Kingdom Hearts III.

However, it's not been a smooth release. Aside from the incredibly tough PC hardware requirements, the remake is lacking many graphical options and suffers from major performance issues - which prompted fans to start poking around in the game's files. Alongside the weird detail that the build on Epic is still marked as an early debug version, modders also found reference to a Steam release.

Cookie Clicker gets full Steam Workshop mod support

One of the most addictive games on Steam, Cookie Clicker now has even more ways to joyously waste people's time - thanks to the efforts of other people. Yes, developer Orteil has confirmed full Cookie Clicker mod support via Steam Workshop - and there are already many mods of questionable nutritious value to choose from.

Cookie Clicker has always been one of the best idle games around and helped pretty much establish the whole idea as a genre. Despite being around for almost ten years it finally launched on Steam in August this year. Cookie Clicker then quickly established itself as one of the most popular games on Steam.

Developer Orteil just released version 2.043 and it's a pretty exciting one, as it now adds an infinite amount more ways to happily waste time - thanks to the inclusion of full mod support via Steam Workshop. A quick browse shows 70 mods already available, ranging from small changes to adding entire minigames to play while you're clicking.

Epic's free game today isn't Bloodborne but is one of PC's best Soulslikes

As part of its holiday celebration we're once again getting treated to a daily free game from the Epic Games Store, and today's title is one of the best Soulslikes on PC. Remnant: From The Ashes was one of the most-lauded games of 2019 and it's completely free, but only for the next 24 hours - so you better go grab it quick.

PC gamers are still waiting on the inevitable port of From Software's classic Bloodborne on PC, to say nothing of the delay of Elden Ring, but anyone looking to scratch that Soulslike itch could do far worse than give Remnant: Beyond The Ashes a try - especially as it's currently free on the Epic Games Store for the next day.

Remnant is a single-player or co-op action-focused survival RPG where, much like Dark Souls or similar titles, players much traverse the world and take every combat encounter seriously - underestimate a single enemy and you'll likely die and lose a lot of progress to boot.

FFVII Remake's poor PC performance might be because it's a debug build

After over a year and a half of waiting, Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally out on PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive - but players aren't happy, with many reporting poor performance, stuttering, and the lack of graphics options. Worse still, modders digging into the port's files have found that Square Enix seems to have released a debug build.

It's long been rumoured that the Final Fantasy VII Remake would come to PC, so there was much rejoicing from fans when it was finally announced at the Game Awards last week for a surprise release on December 16. However, beyond the tough hardware requirements and ridiculously inflated price point, the celebration turned sour when players discovered how the port ran.

As Digital Foundry's Alex Battaglia calls it, Final Fantasy VII Remake "is literally the worst AAA release I have seen on PC in a good long time". Massive stuttering issues, framerate drops, and the lack of crucial graphics settings like anti-aliasing or toggles for pretty much any option to improve performance all mar the experience.

New World is getting a Wheel of Time event for Christmas

Despite being only out for a few months, New World is getting its first crossover event with Amazon's other major fantasy property - no, not Lord of the Rings, it's The Wheel of Time Amazon Prime series, which will let players get access to a number of outfits and items themed around the show.

New World is in the middle of its Winter Convergence Festival event right now, which runs through to January 11 and features seasonal quests, presents to recover and deliver, new resources to gather, and a new enemy called the Winter Warrior who is waging a war to create a "forever winter" - who will probably stick around even after the festival is up.

As part of the event, Amazon has confirmed a crossover between New World and The Wheel of Time fantasy universes - which will take the form of Twitch Drops that'll be available on December 23 to coincide with the series' final episode, and will run until the end of the festival on January 11.

What if: Capcom gave Dino Crisis a Resident Evil-like remake?

Following the success of its Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, and news that a Resident Evil 4 remake is also on the way, I think it's about time Capcom resurrected another videogame series from its survival horror library: Dino Crisis. If it were possible to buy, download, and play it today then you could make an argument for it being one of the best horror games on PC, and it's a terrible shame that Capcom has seemingly left the series to go extinct.

Admittedly, it wasn't so long ago when the meatheaded lows of games like Resident Evil 6 and Dead Space 3 all but killed the genre. But PT and Alien: Isolation provided a spark of inspiration back in 2014, which was fanned by the likes of Resident Evil 7, The Evil Within 2, and Prey. Now survival horror games are as popular as they've ever been. Just imagine how big they'd be now if Silent Hills had actually been released.

It's not a question of whether or not Capcom can remake Dino Crisis - the recent Resident Evil remakes provide both the perfect template and technical foundation for such a project - so let's make the case for why it should. What if Capcom gave Dino Crisis a Resident Evil-like remake?
