Massive co-op roguelike 33 Immortals delayed but you can test it soon

One aspect of an MMO that's pretty much unique to the genre is the raid. Grabbing a huge number of players together all with one goal in mind is something that doesn't really exist elsewhere in gaming. That's something that upcoming co-op roguelike 33 Immortals is looking to fix, splicing a little MMO into its DNA. While it was originally scheduled to enter early access in 2024, that's now been pushed back - but there's still a chance for you to play it soon.

Starfield Shattered Space promised to usher in a new phase for Bethesda's beleaguered space RPG. It was to be a moment to reflect on everything the developer had learned since launch, showing real improvement in areas fans were unhappy about. For a while it looked like the dream was coming true as Starfield's player count shot back up -  not to the highs it launched to, but nearly enough to threaten Skyrim's numbers. That threat has now ended, as Starfield's player count on Steam has gone spiraling back down to Earth.

Despite massive relaunch, New World Aeternum's middling reviews remain unchanged

Everyone loves an underdog, coming from behind to take the spotlight and become all it was promised to be. That's part of why Final Fantasy XIV's relaunch was so successful, because the bones of a great game were always there and in its second incarnation it managed to bring that greatness to the fore. On the other side, sometimes a relaunch fails, with the new version of a title disappearing without trace. In the case of New World Aeternum, however, it looks like its new, retooled version is carrying on in pretty much the same fashion as before, at least in the case of its Steam reviews.

Alan Wake developers Remedy have announced their very first multiplayer game, a three-person co-op shooter set in the world of Control and thereby, the Remedy Connected Universe. Previously codenamed Condor, it's called FBC: Firebreak - and I am going to immediately recommend they shorten it to Firebreak, because that caps-into-colon combo is going to wind me up when I'm writing news posts at speed. While I'm throwing my weight around, let me also instantly rebut the pedants who are even now racing to leave a comment saying that, actually, Remedy did work on Smilegate's multiplayer shooter CrossfireX. Yes, they did, but only the single player bits.

Anyway, Firebreak! Here's the announcement trailer.

Warcraft Frostmourne Replica

I am never going to beat the allegations of being a Warcraft III-liker, or that I really, really like Arthas Menethil. (I write about him all of the time and how I am still, unfortunately, deep in the Warcraft III sauce.) Which is why I, personally, think that Blizzard Entertainment should roll out another wave of those sweet, sweet Warcraft III Frostmourne replicas that were produced in 2021. Would I have the money to drop on a $1,500 1:1 scale replica of the legendary blade? Absolutely not. I work in games, which means I make peanuts by comparison to almost anyone outside of this field. But I can dream about owning it.

You see, Frostmourne isn't just any sword. It was the ancient Runeblade wielded by the Lich King Ner'zhul, and after him Prince Arthas Menethil of Lordaeron. (I am going to ignore the additional lore about Frostmourne and it's origins added in through Shadowlands because it doesn't do much other than overcomplicate the mythology around a really cool sword, and sometimes things are better off left unexplained.) That probably means nothing to you unless if you've played Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, it's expansion The Frozen Throne, or World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

My original intention for this feature was to take pictures around my apartment and poorly Photoshop the sword in various places, such as in my kitchen, my bedroom, and above my desk, showcasing just how cool Frostmourne would look in these mundane, day-to-day spaces. But I realize that it isn't the wisest choice. I don't need people seeing what the inside of my apartment looks like. Not because it looks bad, but putting that information out on the internet isn't exactly smart. Especially for a gag.

Image via Blizzard Entertainment

So imagine, if you will, Frostmourne mounted above your very own desk; it's polished edge, glistening in the lamplight of your personal office. Or perhaps hanging beside your fridge, complimenting the eggshell white walls of an otherwise drab room. Or even in your bedroom! Not above your bed, but just somewhere on one of the four walls, hanging there, menacingly. It could be a neat conversation starter at the very least, as I've been told by friends who are truly encouraging to life my best life. (We're only here once, after all.) But I'm not entirely certain guests would be down to listen to a long schpeal about Warcraft lore, like I've often subjected you to. At least those that have frequently read my World of Warcraft features at Siliconera.

Perhaps that doesn't seem entirely cool to you, the reader. After all, we more than likely have different tastes when it comes to home decor. I prefer the moody atmosphere of forest green walls accentuated by dark wood trim accented with gold. Vintage furniture and chaise lounges accompanied by towering bookshelves. Picture frames of dull silver housing hand illustrated pomegranates and flowers. What I'm describing is Gothic, perhaps even a little Castlevania flavored. Would the Warcraft III Frostmourne replica fit in with this perfectly curated space that I've painstakingly took the time to assemble? More than likely not. Still, a man can dream.

Warcraft III is available for PC. World of Warcraft is also available for PC.

We'll See a My Deer Friend Nokotan Noko Shikanoko Nendoroid

Among the Good Smile Company 2024 New York Comic Con figure reveals was one anime announcement for a My Deer Friend Nokotan Nendoroid of Noko Shikanoko. Due to how early it is in development, only concept art for the character appeared on social media and at the event.

It seems like the Noko Shikanoko Nendoroid will feature the My Deer Friend Nokotan character in her school uniform. The preliminary art also featured her making her traditional peace signs she uses in official art for the series, suggesting those will appear as additional parts. In the series, she is able to detach her antlers at will. However, it is unknown if those will be removable when the figure releases.

Here's a closer look at the announcement and the full concept art for the character:

https://twitter.com/goodsmile_en/status/1846922894103707753

Since the anime series' release and popularity, we've seen it come up quite frequently. There was a Deermobile driving around in Japan to promote the series. There was also a special music video based on the show.

The My Deer Friend Nokotan anime is available to watch via Crunchyroll and Amazon, and there's no release window for the Noko Shikanoko Nendoroid yet. The manga is handled by Seven Seas outside Japan.

NicoNico App Available on Nintendo Switch Again

Dwango announced that the NicoNico app is available again on the Nintendo Switch since October 17, 2024. NicoNico video and its associated services are slowly returning back to service after the application suffered a large scale cyberattack back in June 8, 2024.

Those interested in downloading and using the NicoNico app on the Nintendo Switch will need to have access to the Japanese Nintendo eShop as well as a Japanese account to download it. For users that already have the app downloaded on their systems prior to the cyberattack, they will need to update the app to Ver. 4.51 in order to be able to access its services again.

Furthermore, in an effort to strengthen security measures, NicoNico parent company Dwango announced that the NicoNico app password has been reset. Users that haven't logged into the app after the service went back online earlier in August 5, 2024 will need to create a new password for their accounts to be able to use the service.

As a reminder, aside from a new version of the NicoNico service returning earlier in August 2024, Dwango also revealed that some of the NicoNico services would cease to exist due to a loss of data caused by the cyberattack, such as the NicoNi Community function.

The Nintendo Switch version of the NicoNico app has resumed its services from October 17, 2024.

In the case of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, the Dragon Ball Daima DLC comes up during Future Saga Chapter 2. We already know that pack would involve Belmod, Champa, and Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku. Goku (Mini) will also be playable, and he'll be a part of a free trial.

Here's how that looks:

Finally, the Dragon Ball Daima related addition to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will be Adventure Through the Demon Realm Part 1 DLC. Once again, this means we'll spend time with Goku (Mini). It also means visiting the Demon Realm.

Here's that trailer:

The talented team over at 07th Expansion knows how to make a masterful, complicated, and engrossing story. The folks did it with Higurashi first, and then soon after again with Umineko. More importantly, everyone involved is a master of Japanese horror, which not enough visual novels and anime do well. As such, it is high time for Umineko, one of the best horror anime of all time, to make a long-awaited return.

Umineko has a pretty straightforward initial premise with an execution that is anything but simple. It tells the story of a family that gathers on an island, only to become stranded there. Thus ensues some wild and horrifying murders that can't be easily explained. Is it supernatural? A human serial killer? Therein lies the true mystery of this anime.

I would argue the premise of this series and the spooky vibes are, at times, more compelling and intriguing than even Higurashi, which I also adore. It has a structure quite similar to its predecessor in the original visual novel, too, splitting between its four question arcs and four answer ones. Unfortunately, the original anime focused solely on the question side.

As such, fans are left with some of the worst lingering questions with no answers and it has been like this since the anime's release in 2009. That is quite a long time to wait without any resolution whatsoever. Of course, you can play the original visual novels, read the manga, or even the novelization series for the answers if you'd like.

But I think it is a shame to make fans go that route, especially since Higurashi is complete in anime form. In fact, it is so complete that it got a full-on two-season sequel, despite being seemingly finished, from 2020-2021. This makes the situation all the more worse for Umineko that has nothing but a single 26 episode season.

At this point, it feels necessary to do a full-on Umineko remake. And this would be great since it would have much better animation and usher in a new audience. This remake season could be a precursor to a second season finally diving into the answers. I hate to get my hopes up, but it actually feels like the right time to do this as well.

Umineko Return

After all, we got Higurashi's surprise return fairly recently. Then there is the almost renaissance of whodunnits in recent years. The likes of Among Us, the Knives Out series, and Hercule Poirot's recent trilogy all help to popularize this genre. And given how unique Umineko's take on murder mysteries is, it can stand out even further.

The one possible hitch in this plan is who would make the Umineko anime. Passione created the recent Higurashi sequels, so it seems like a likely candidate. However, it is quite busy right now with a lot of upcoming and current series like Chained Soldier Season 2, Nukitashi the Animation, and Loner Life in Another World.

Fans would likely either have to wait even longer for this legendary horror anime series to return or another studio would have to handle it. Regardless, I do hope it returns and gets the justice it deserves. The intense murders, locked room mysteries, and surprises would fit so well in today's landscape. And this is before the epic and memorable characters like protagonist Battler and the evil witch Beatrice, who might even more be iconic than the Higurashi cast. Hopefully, we finally see one of the best horror anime series of all time, Umineko, return soon.

Umineko: When They Cry is not currently available to stream on any legal service in North America.
