The Sonic the Hedgehog website now includes a canon timeline of the events and games from the series. It starts from prehistory (Sonic World Adventure) and ends 200 years in the future (Sonic the Hedgehog).
The full timeline is available directly via Sega. You can read through important events that occurred throughout the franchise's history, as well as which games the events were from. This can give Sonic fans, both new and old, an easy way to look at the games' story and in-lore history without necessarily having to sit through a video essay or picking up the entire series themself.
Aside from giving an overview of the timeline, we can also see which Sonic properties Sega considers as part of the canon. Party game Sonic Shuffle is canon, and it took place between Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. So after Sonic and friends saved Maginaryworld, they had to save the world again from Doctor Eggman's nefarious plot. Games like Sonic Mania, which Sega published but is not a team from Sonic Team, also appear on the timeline, marking it as a canon entry in the general story.
You can check out the Sonic the Hedgehog timeline yourself via Sega's website. The most recent game in the series is Sonic x Shadow Generations for the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Bandai Spirits announced that two Monster Hunter figures (one of Zinogre and one of Rathalos) will appear in Banpresto crane games. You'll be able to play for them from March 25, 2025.
According to the official Banpresto website, the Zinogre and Rathalos Monster Hunter figures will be around 17 centimeters tall. They're part of the Enshrined Monsters series of figures, which focuses on presenting its muses in a cool, yet, cute, light. Though the figure is small, they still maintain their monster-like designs without being "chibified" and can still look intimidating.
The Zinogre looks like it's about to jump into battle, while the Rathalos is spreading its wings. As a note for the Rathalos, while the promotional image has it spitting fire, the actual figure itself only has its mouth open. You'd have to DIY that part if you really want the full effect from the poster.
Both Zinogre and Rathalos are signature monsters that have appeared throughout the Monster Hunter series. They're also in the newest entry of the franchise, Monster Hunter Wilds. Wilds came out in late February 2025 and is the successor to 2018's World. It sold over 8 million copies in only three days and is now Capcom's fastest-selling game.
Monster Hunter Wilds is readily available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.

Hikaru is smiling at Yoshiki, who has the image of a red-eyed Hikaru whose face is half-covered in something bizarrely inhuman on his back. As for the character visuals, Yoshiki looks kind of sad while Hikaru is striking a cheery pose.

The Severance Season 2 finale of course ended things on a bit of a cliffhanger, with Innie Mark Scout and Helly running through the halls of the of the severed floor of Lumon as the alarms continue to sound. Of course that makes it natural to wonder: will there be a third season of Severance? Here's what we know so far.
![]()
Has Severance been renewed for Season 3?
As of the Severance Season 2 finale on March 21, 2025, the popular series has not been renewed for a third season. That being said, I think it's safe to assume the show inevitably will be. Heading into the finale, Severance Season 2 had reached over 3 billion streaming minutes, a massive milestone for any streaming show. According to Apple TV+, it has become the platform's most popular show even surpassing Ted Lasso in terms of unique viewers.
Critically, Season 1 of Severance had impressive ratings but Season 2 has managed to achieve even higher scores, with the Metacritic average of Season 2 sitting at 86 at the time this article was written, three points higher than Season 1.
For those looking for any other sort of clues of renewal, we can take the words directly from Severance Director and Executive Producer Ben Stiller himself. In a podcast called New Heights with the Kelce brothers (yeah, for real), Stiller stated that the plan is "definitely not" for Season 3 to have a three-year wait until it releases as the second season did. Of course, that would infer there is indeed a Season 3. Stiller also went on to say "Hopefully we'll be announcing what the plan is very soon." which may indicate that an official renewal from Apple is imminent.
Of course, you can never know, but with a show as calculated as Severance that has become a global success, not to mention fostering a massive fanbase, you'd have to assume that Apple would intend to end things with some sort of resolution rather than the semi-cliffhanger we got from the Severance Season 2 finale. Hopefully, we get official news of a Season 3 renewal soon!

Between Milchick and the animatronic Kier Eagan, we got some not-so-ordinary vocabulary choices in the Severance Season 2 finale. It was fun to break down the big words Milchick used in Episode 9, so let's do the same for Episode 10 as well!
What is the definition of Probity, Verve, and Wiles?
Usually, these definitions come after Milchick drops a big word, but in this episode, it was more of just not-so-commonly used words, and one even came from the animatronic Kier! Here's the definition for all the more unusual words in the Severance Season 2 finale:
While not quite the wordsmithing we got from the previous episode, these are still some heavy hitters from Milchick and Kier in the Severance Season 2 finale. Who knows what words will await in Season 3!

What a wild ride the last 10 weeks have been, but with Severance Season 2 Episode 10 Cold Harbor the season has officially reached its end. Let's talk about what happened at the end of Severance Season 2 Episode 10 Cold Harbor and what it means moving forward.
Oh, and obviously, Severance Season 2 finale spoilers below.
![]()
Innie Mark and Outie Mark have a heated debate about the future
At the beginning of Severance Season 2 Episode 10, we see Innie Mark and Outie Mark get into a heated debate. Outie Mark needs Innie Mark to assist him with trying to break his wife, Gemma, out of the lower floors of Lumon. Innie Mark is understandably concerned about this prospect because doing so will more than likely mean at the very least the end of him, as Innie Mark, as there is no way that Lumon will simply allow Mark to return not to mention who knows what the fate of the company will be once word get out what they've been doing with the Severance technology.
Fast forward to the ending of Severance Season 2 Episode 10 titled Cold Harbor, the Season 2 finale, and we see Innie Mark fulfilling the wishes of Outie Mark. With the help of Helly and Innie Dylan, they stage a coup and lock Milchick in the bathroom, after which Innie Mark races to find the dark hallway with the elevator going down that Irving told them all about, and where he believes Gemma to be held. Outside said hallway he encounters Drummond, and the two get into a pretty violent fight before Lorne, the head of Lumon's Mammallians Nuturable Department (the goat lady) gets involved and helps Innie Mark get the upper hand.
Using a bolt pistol that Lumon uses to sacrifice goats, Innie Mark takes Drummond capture and forces him to take him down the elevator, holding the weapon to his neck. As he explains to Drummond what to do once they reach the floor, the elevator arrives at its destination and the severance chip switches Mark to Outie Mark who instinctively immediately pulls the trigger of the bolt pistol which kills Drummond.
Mark and Gemma Scout finally reunite
He's then able to find the Cold Harbor room where Gemma is, and after using the blood on his tie from Drummond, he's able to enter the room and after some persuasion convinces Gemma to join him in leaving. This is such a special moment as it's the first time, both Outie Mark and actual original Gemma (at least we think so) are together. They flee back to the elevator and share a passionate kiss, and upon heading up, the severance chip switches them to Innie Mark and Ms. Casey who awkwardly look at each other.
On the actual severed floor, Innie Mark and Ms. Casey rush to the door to the outside stairwell to escape the Lumon building. When they get there, Innie Mark urges Ms. Casey to exit the building, which she does, and the severance chip switches her back to Gemma. However, instead of leaving with her, Innie Mark stares at the door, contemplating whether he should exit or not. Remember, to Innie Mark, this could very well be essentially his suicide; exiting that door may mean he never exists again. Gemma bangs on the door pleading with him to join her, when suddenly Helly shows up down the hallway as well.
Innie Mark decides to stay at Lumon
In the end, Innie Mark decides to stay inside Lumon, and walks back to reunite with Helly, and understandably confused and scared Gemma pounding on the door pleading for Mark to come with her. As Innie Mark and Helly reunite, they take off running through the Lumon halls, with the alarms blaring following the events that took place.
Severance has yet to be renewed for Season 3, but it's hard to imagine it won't be given how successful the show has become. With a show like Severance it's hard to know exactly where it will go, but with how long it showed Mark and Helly running through the halls of Lumon, I can't help but wonder if we're going to see that the severed floor of Lumon is actually so much bigger than we even expected, and if that's the case, who knows where Mark and Helly will end up.

The Path of Ambition may only have arrived in Destiny 2 with the second Act of Heresy, but it's quickly proving essential to the whole Episode. Once Guardians have access, they'll want to level it up as fast as possible.
Episode: Heresy has introduced a lot to Destiny 2 in its short time, including the player-approved Nether activity and now Act II's Court of Blades. Unlike other Episodes, Heresy even has two reputation reward tracks: one called Path of Resolve and another known as Path of Ambition. The latter Path is the key to certain rewards and milestones, like earning the second Barrow-Dyad Exotic Catalyst or the Elemental Siphon Boost Engraving on the Tome of Want. But it can feel like an uphill battle starting over with a new reputation track.
Thankfully for players, there are some ways to make the Path of Ambition easier to walk. There are a few tricks Guardians can lean on to earn all of the Path of Ambition reputation they need, and some methods will even work if you still need to rank up the Path of Resolve.
Reputation Gains
The activity loop to grind Path of Ambition rep
![]()
Based on how reputation is doled out, players can plan the order in which they do activities to maximize earnings. For example, it might make sense just to defeat the first boss and open its chest during a Nether run on Expert. Doing this a few times in a row, you'll net more rep than doing a complete run in the same amount of time. Thankfully, plenty of Essence of Desire will be dropping from defeated foes. So as long as players are keeping an eye out, they'll earn a nice little bonus every so often.
Afterward, once players have amassed a stack of 20 or 30 Metastasized Essentia, running a Court of Blades will reward an extra 175 XP and allow players to deposit the Metastasized Essentia at the end. Of course, Guardians can also take Metastasized Essentia to Eris' Flat in The Last City, but we're trying to optimize our time spent.
Don't count the story out
![]()
If players have the option, another great way to fast-track rep gains is by going through the Episode: Heresy story with a different character. Another Guardian will earn rep XP towards whatever Path is set in Eris' Flat. Assuming that's the Path of Ambition, catching an alternate character up to your others can help hasten the reputation grind. That said, before embarking on these one-time narrative missions, you should still check the Flat to ensure the right Path is set.
Another good thing to keep in mind is that characters retreading the story will already have access to Court of Blades. So the same loop as described above can also work to maximize the rep earned. After all, the Heresy story will frequently send players into The Nether, and there are plenty of Metastasized Essentia to pick up while in there.
It will definitely take some time and concerted effort, but so long as Guardians keep up with Heresy activities, they'll eventually master the Path of Ambition. If you want to speed things up a bit, it's all about optimizing the activities you're running.

The roughly 90-minute-long Future Games Show Spring Showcase 2025 has come to an end, which means it's time to take a look at the biggest games that were revealed during the event. In total around 50 games were showcased in this event, but only eight were actual new game reveals.
Every new game revealed in the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase 2025
For clarification, a newly revealed game means it's one that has not yet been announced, revealed, or showcased in any capacity by the developer or publisher of the game. Most of the games in the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase 2025 were already previously revealed but received a major development update, a release date announcement, or a simple peek into the progression of the game. Let's instead focus on the eight games that were revealed for the first time during the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase 2025:
Lost Rift
Lost Rift is a supernatural survival game set on a desert island by Developer People Can Fly. The dev team is best known for collaborating with Epic Games on the development of various Gears of War titles as well as Bulletstorm. According to People Can Fly, Lost Rift will include both PvP and PvPvE gameplay on the desert island and is expected to hit Steam Early Access later in 2025.
The minute-long trailer didn't show too much, but from what it did show, it certainly looks like what it claims to be: a survival PvPvE game. We see the player chopping down trees, crafting some new equipment, and fighting other players and creatures including a giant King Kong-esque beast.
I Hate This Place
Up next is a new isometric open-world survival horror game by Silent Hill 2 Remake developer Bloober Team. I Hate This Place is set in an eerie and unpredictable world that is twisted beyond comprehension. In this single-player nightmare, players will explore a supernatural world inspired by the award-winning comic book series created by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin.
I guess it's the year of supernatural survival games! Bloober really worked its magic with the Silent Hill 2 Remake so I'm willing to give a new IP from them a shot. I Hate This Place is set to release on PC later in 2025.
Elsewhere Electric
Developer Games by Stitch dropped a reveal trailer for its new asymmetrical puzzle game Elsewhere Electric. Players explore an abandoned facility with a friend in co-op where they must communicate and share unique information available to them to solve environmental puzzles with their friend. Elsewhere Electric will be released in the Summer of 2025 on Steam and Meta.
Serious Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes vibes here, which isn't a bad thing. According to the video description, one player is on a mobile phone while the other is in VR, which is a pretty unique concept. I usually enjoy these "work together with a friend" style of games so excited to see what comes of Elsewhere Electric.
Shelf Heroes
In Shelf Heroes by developer Fun Punch Games, players must mix and match various toy parts to assemble their very own Shelf Hero and explore a giant house solo or with friends in 3-player co-op. Players create their Toy Story or Small Soldiers-style characters and equip a variety of weapons including a frying pan, explosive bow, blaster minigun, shotgun, and more, before exploring the house and taking our enemy toys.
This looks like a pretty fun concept! Hopefully, they can eventually get some licensed toys, as that would be pretty cool as well. There's no release date yet for Shelf Heroes but it's set to launch on PC via Steam.
Romestead
At a glance, Romestead looks like a cozy-style game like Stardew Valley where players are tasked with rebuilding the Roman empire in a pixel art open-world survival game. However, apparently, the destruction of Rome was at the hands of a zombie invasion! Up to 8 players can team up to fight zombies, build towns, and earn favor with the Roman gods while also tending their crops in Romestead by developer Beartwigs.
I love me some Stardew Valley and pretty much anything Roman-themed so count me in. There is no release date yet but Romestead will launch on PC via Steam and is currently accepting signups for an upcoming closed alpha playtest.
Frosthaven
A follow-up to the popular board game and Steam game Gloomhaven, Frosthaven is a virtual adaptation of the legendary tabletop game as well. In this dark fantasy tactical RPG by developer Snapshot Games, players create their own unique character from six starting classes before engaging in deep tactical combat against a variety of enemies as they explore the fantasy world of Frosthaven and build up their own outpost.
I actually had the opportunity to get some brief hands-on time with Frosthaven a few weeks back and while I was originally intimidated (as I am with most heavily tactical-style games), once I learned the systems at work and started to learn how I was meant to play, I had a ton of fun. Looking forward to seeing more of Frosthaven which is publisher Arc Games says is coming soon to PC.
RAEV Kingdom on the Distant Shores
In this cutesy cartoon city builder by developer Ravine Games, players build a foxy empire, starting each kingdom with just a single bonfire before expanding it into a sprawling civilization of villages and cities spanning an entire continent. According to Ravine Games, RAEV Kingdom on the Distant Shores is more than just a typical city-builder as it also blends elements of RPG, city-building, and grand strategy into one.
I'm personally not sold on the Fox people but the game itself does look rather impressive! City builders that let you really expand and grow in a meaningful way as opposed to doing so just to make things bigger often result in the best experiences in the genre, so I'm interested in seeing how Ravine Games tackles it with RAEV. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll have to wait a little while, as RAEV isn't expected to release until 2026.
Painkiller
Surprise, Painkiller is back! Saber Interactive and 3D Realms are developing an all-new game based on the 2004 shooter. In Painkiller, players battle through Purgatory in a fast-paced co-op wielding various infernal weapons against demonic hordes. If you've never played a previous Painkiller before, think Doom. Painkiller is coming to PC and consoles in Fall 2025.
Well this showcase really came full circle, eh? The original Painkiller back in 2004 was developed by Polish studio People Can Fly, who incidentally is developing the first game reveal of the showcase, Lost Rift. I was honestly really really good at the time, and everyone I know who played it had a blast. Unfortunately, each iteration of Painkilleraftwards including Overdose, Resurrection, and Hell and Damnation were all...not too good. That being said, it's looking great based on the trailer and I'll certainly be checking it out!

Early Katana builds are great for the beginning stages of the game, but Legendary types stand out as the best well-rounded weapons. Due to their high rarity, acquiring them requires a scavenger hunt. We're here to show you all Legendary Katana locations in Assassin's Creed Shadows.
Table of contents
Where to find all Legendary Katanas in AC: Shadows
A few Legendary Katanas can be found early on in your journey, starting from the beginner Izumi Settsu region. Each weapon's stats will differ depending on your current rank (the higher the level, the higher the DPS rates). However, it'll always have the same unique skill attached to it, which can be upgraded through the Hideout's Forge. Let's break down each Legendary Katana location in AC: Shadows (I'll also note the recommended levels for these regions):
Bloodshade - Izumi Settsu
![]()
You'll see a ship off in the distance to the left of Osaka, where a Legendary Chest resides. Like most places, you'll have to fend off enemies here to roam around this vessel freely. Travel up to the building at the top to unlock the Legendary Chest for the Bloodshade Legendary Katana.
![]()
Masked Death - Iga
![]()
On the northern side of Iga, you can open the Masked Death Legendary Chest near Otogi Pass. You'll likely have to conclude Act 1 to reach this area, where you should be approaching the Level 20 mark. Once you gain access to Iga's Otogi Pass, look below a large rock to spot the Legendary Chest next to some crates.
![]()
Yami no Kage - Harima
![]()
The Yami no Kage Legendary Katana is deep inside the Hiraiyama Fort. As a Level 25 fortress, you'll undoubtedly face some challenges along the way, especially with the might of the two Samurai Daishos. I highly suggest increasing your rank before embarking on this level since the enemies can one-hit kill you. If you can defeat the Samurai Daishos, you'll unlock the Yami no Kage Legendary Chest at the very top of the castle.
![]()
Iga's Flame - Yamato
![]()
Head towards the Mount Nukai fast travel point on the western side of Yamato. While at this location, look above to see a gold circle in the bamboo. If you're using Yasuke, you must switch to Naoe to climb to this spot. A hidden cave will be there, containing yet another Legendary Chest.
![]()
Carved Bone Katana - Store
![]()
You can acquire the Carved Bone Katana through the Naoe Gashadokuro Pack. It'll cost you 1,800 Helix Credits, around $19.99 in the store. However, you can also get the sword by itself for 450 Helix Credits ($4.99).
Eye of the Dragon - Store
![]()
Like the Carved Bone, the Eye of the Dragon Legendary Katana can be found in the store. The pack costs $19.99, while the standalone sword version goes for $4.99.
There may be more Legendary Katanas in the other regions, so I'll be sure to update this AC: Shadows guide once I've uncovered them. For more tips on tools, check out our weapons tier list for Naoe.

With the introduction of Coda weapons in Warframe, some mods have become a bit more popular. One, in particular is the Volatile Variant mod. If you want to know how to get the Volatile Variant mod in Warframe, here's what you need to know.
Table of contents
How to get the Volatile Variant mod in Warframe
To get the Volatile Variant mod, you would have had to complete up until Rank 25 in the Nora's Mix Vol. 5 Nightwave episode. This ended in May 2024, with the mod not being obtainable since then.
But with there now being a Coda variant of the Sporothrix, this mod is going to be a lot more potent in status builds or even crit builds (despite the low critical chance).
Alternate ways to get Volatile Variant
If you missed out on that Nightwave episode, you can still obtain it by trading with other players.
Be warned, though. With the increase in the mod's popularity and its scarcity, you're looking to spend anywhere between 80 to 120 Platinum. If you want to wait for a price drop or another chance to get the mod, there's always a slim chance it'll be rewarded again in a future Nightwave episode or through Baro Ki'Teer.
![]()
How to use Volatile Variant
Since this is a weapon-specific mod, Volatile Variant can only be used on the Sporothrix and Coda Sporothrix. It increases your Punch Through by three while also making the projectiles explode on direct impact with enemies, increasing blast radius by four and status chance by 50%.
It's a strong mod on paper and can turn this into a mobbing machine, especially in narrow corridors. But with the aforementioned Coda variant of the weapon, this will be able to do so much more with the added element on top of its boosted stats.
Is Volatile Variant worth it?
If you're a min-maxxer in Warframe, the mod is worth getting your hands on, despite its hefty price. It has a few very powerful synergies, especially when paired with crit frames like Harrow or sniper frames like Cyte-09.
But if you plan on only using this as mastery fodder or for big single-target purposes, you can skip out on it. There are other snipers out there that can do a lot without augments like this.

If you haven't had the chance to claim all the goodies for The Blast From the Past event in The Sims 4, have no fear! EA is extending the event until April 1, which gives you plenty of time to complete the quests.
While the requirements for Blast From the Past are fairly straightforward, there's one step that's causing even veteran players to stumble. If you need help finding the Special Time Capsule, we're here to help, so you can earn all the sweet rewards.

Special Time Capsule locations in The Sims 4
After you've met time traveler Emit Relevart and completed all the prerequisite steps, you'll be tasked with finding a very Special Time Capsule to open. You're not given more information than to simply look for some rocks, which can be tricky if you don't know where to go.
Luckily, digging up Special Time Capsules is the same as you would find any other time capsule. Find any of the rocks with crystals, metals, or fossils on them, and you can click on them and choose the option to dig.

These same rocks will have the quest-exclusive interaction to dig for the Special Time Capsule. You'll likely have to dig a few rocks up before finding the item. But as long as you're in the right spot, there will be plenty of stones to check.
Best places to find the Special Time Capsule in The Sims 4
The rocks meant for digging are not as common everywhere you go, so we recommend heading to either the park in Willow Creek or the park in Oasis Springs. Both of these lots are very large, and have a lot of outdoor space. There will be far more rocks to dig here.
Since you meet Emit at the Magnolia Blossom Park in Willow Creek anyway, it's simple to head back and dig up the time capsule there.
What's inside the Special Time Capsule in The Sims 4
Once you've successfully dug up the Special Time Capsule, you can find it in your Sim's personal inventory. Simply click on it and then choose to open it up. Inside is nothing more than an IOU note, which you can read to continue on in the event.
Since finding the Special Time Capsule is early on in the event, you'll still have quite a few more steps to go before you unlock all the rewards you can earn. But the entire event only takes a few real-life hours to complete. Be sure to check out all the Blast From the Past quest rewards and how to get them to make sure you're not missing out on anything.

Most enemies from Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Bloodborne would naturally fit in any medieval-themed horror story simply for how easily they'll tear you to pieces after you make one simple mistake during combat.
Still, some have such uniquely off-putting looks that they deserve to be observed in very well-guarded cells in the video game museum of grotesquerie. Let's look at the gnarliest-looking monstrosities in this series, and check out if they're perhaps even worse than they look, shall we?
10. Nightmare Apostle (Bloodborne)
![]()
Ok, I'll start off simple. Don't ask me for sources, but 40% of the human population is afraid of spiders, and 50% is terrified of them. Even those who aren't probably wouldn't like them ten times our size. Spiders don't need anything other than sheer scale to be some of the scariest things in existence, but Bloodborne does you one better.
The Nightmare Apostle's room is a horror masterpiece because as soon as you enter it, you see a bunch of huge spiders hanging from the ceiling, and you just know they're going to drop to ambush you, leaving only the "when" as a mystery.
I won't spoil it, but this is one hell of a memorable encounter that would elevate any full-on horror game or film.
9. Great Feline (Dark Souls)
![]()
The case for the Great Feline is the exact opposite of the one from the entry above. Mostly everyone loves cats — especially people who have ever been in contact with the internet — but this isn't a regular cat. This isn't even like a lion or a tiger, big cats that might — even when they don't want to — eviscerate you with ease.
Something about these huge roided-up cats just looks wrong — intentionally so. They're clearly sick and, sadly, capable of equally sick moves that will immediately obliterate any poor fool wasting time wondering if the game features any secret way of petting them.
8. Glow Worms (Elden Ring)
![]()
Did you know that Australia has actual glow-in-the-dark worms? I've been haunted by that knowledge for many years. Still, I've always enjoyed the solace of knowing Australia is so far away from where I live that it barely even counts as a real place.
Miyazaki isn't ok with us feeling safe, so he brought Glow Worms closer to everyone by putting these things in something more real than Australia to most: Elden Ring. What the hell even are these things? They don't really do anything other than just creepily stand there and use their bioluminescence to prevent players from forgetting they share reality with them — but they're really good at that.
7. Deep Accursed (Dark Souls 3)
![]()
Even though the Deep Accursed features various creepy elements in its design, the scariest thing about him is how his ambushes provide jumpscares worthy of the best horror movies out there. The Souls series is known for its ambushes, but there's being ambushed by everything else, and then there's being ambushed by this grisly, long-legged, shiny-eyed beast.
The Deep Accursed is great at scaring the player like a huge predator would scare a tiny rat. He rarely shows up in the game, but as soon as he's dropped from the ceiling to get you the first time, your era of nonchalantly entering new rooms on Dark Souls 3 without fearing for your life will be over.
6. Monstrosity Of Sin (Dark Souls 3)
![]()
I don't know if one of the artists was trying to come up with the most off-putting thing they could come up with for Dark Souls 3, then asked their colleagues to come up with a fitting name, or if FromSoft's name-giver came up with the most egregious name for a beast and then the artists did a wonderful life realizing that vision.
The Monstrosity Of Sin has a human-like body, but at the end of every single one of his limbs, there's a hand with way too many fingers. Even its head is a gigantic hand — also with too many fingers. That would've been enough to earn it a place on this list, but this head/hand is also covered in eyes or strange parasites that produce a type of goo you don't see anywhere else in the game.
This is one of the rarest enemies in the game, and that's probably because the developers were well aware that one encounter would probably be enough to ensure no player would forget about the Monstrosity Of Sin.
5. The Beggar (Bloodborne)
![]()
It should come as no surprise that Bloodborne populates most entries on this list, and that's because it features all horrors of all kinds. This guy doesn't feature a suspicious number of eyes, tentacles, or any goo-secreting organ, but he's a walking, talking, stalking, blood-spitting red flag.
The afflicted beggar presents himself as but a skinny guy covered in blood and in need of your help. The problem here is that when we first encounter this man, he's munching on a human corpse. Yarhnam is already a place where consuming blood is the norm, so can you really blame them for giving this man the benefit of the doubt? Who's to say what the consensus on cannibalism is in this god-forsaken, elder god-invaded realm? That's what the main character is likely thinking while they interact with this man, all the while the player controlling him is probably petrified by what he's witnessing.
Then, surprise, surprise, it turns out that any suspicions would be correct, and the Beggar reveals himself to be a figuratively and literally huge monster. Still, its original appearance more than would've sufficed to grant him a place on this list.
4. Chaos Eater (Dark Souls)
![]()
When you look at the Chaos Eater from afar, he looks goofy. When you get closer, his multitude of eyes combined with his pervy tentacles will make you realize he's one of the creepiest-looking entities in the game. When you let him get too close, you'll realize that every step towards this thing was an obviously dumb mistake. I, like many other innocent players before me, originally imagined the Chaos Eater would get his nourishment by sucking things up through his tentacles. Nasty, but it's even worse than that, it turns out.
The Chaos Eater is closer to a human than I thought, as he also chews on his food just like we do. Unfortunately, however, I went on to learn that instead of jaws, his head serves as the home for a rotating teeth-covered hell pit that he loves feeding players to.
3. Grafted Scion (Elden Ring)
![]()
This cobbled-together monstrosity is the very first thing we face on Elden Ring — the classic FromSoft boss that exists solely to put players in their place — and that's reason enough for it to populate the nightmares of many players. Still, that's far from the worst thing about it.
The Grafted Scion is composed of the bodies of many deceased adults — already not great — but upon closer inspection (or simply by looking at the head), you'll see how it also features the limbs of many children. If you thought the worlds of games were dark but at least kind enough to protect children by not featuring them at all, then I apologize for dispelling that illusory wall in your mind.
2. Winter Lantern (Bloodborne)
![]()
The later segment of Bloodborne isn't as challenging as its early and middle sections — except for the part where we have to deal with this thing. The Winter Lantern is such a masterpiece of enemy design that even though it doesn't look threatening on a physical level — and it kind of isn't — one glance is all it takes to inform your brain that you're about to have a bad time. You'll get the idea that this thing is terrifying just from looking at screenshots, but nothing beats looking at it in motion, killing you simply by existing and looking ugly.
This is like if Naughty Dog had a slider for creepiness when making the infected from The Last Of Us and accidentally turned it up to 11.
1. Brain of Mensis (Bloodborne)
![]()
The Brain of Mensis is number one and it isn't even close. If the Winter Lantern terrorizes you, this should affect you in a way we don't even have words to describe yet. In essence, the Brain Of Mensis is a gigantic Winter Lantern, an entity powerful enough to ultimately kill anyone in its line of sight — and it's very good at looking.
On top of its tremendous power, the Brain of Mensis is also the gooiest and most eldritch monstrosity we've seen in FromSoft games, an amorphous mix of giant eyeballs and what looks like decaying brain matter. The optional segment, when we finally come face to brain with this thing, features no combat or any sort of deadly trap, yet it remains one of the most eerily memorable moments in gaming.
