Kotaku Friday, May 23, 2025 2:35 PM ![]() Capcom's remaster of 2002 PS2 hack and slash adventure Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny is a classic, though it does show its age at some points—particularly with its fixed camera angles and gameplay that certainly feels more than 20 years old. PCGamesN Friday, May 23, 2025 6:54 PM It's always heart-breaking to see a promising new multiplayer game scrapped, but it's even sadder still to see one wrap up development before it even fully launches. Unfortunately, that's exactly what's happened to Battle Aces - an RTS game aiming to deliver super-fast 1v1 and 2v2 matches while still boasting plenty of strategic depth. Despite its promising premise, and the fact that it has a former Starcraft dev as a game director, Battle Aces has reached the end of its journey. PCGamesN Friday, May 23, 2025 6:11 PM Part empire builder, part roguelike deckbuilder, 9 Kings is certainly an intriguing proposition. Your pixelated kingdom needs to expand and defend itself against enemy factions, but instead of harvesting resources, growing your population, and teaching them new skills, its fate lies in your hands - your hands of cards, that is. Looking to become the next hit strategy game from Hooded Horse, the publisher behind the likes of Manor Lords and Cataclismo, 9 Kings has just hit Steam Early Access - and it's going down a storm already. PCGamesN Friday, May 23, 2025 5:03 PM If we were to put it to a democratic vote, the people would undoubtedly elect Doom as their boomer shooter president. But is it the best? Many would argue that title belongs to Dusk, the 2018, retro-style FPS that feels like a throw back to the golden age of Doom. Built primarily by just one man, it's one of the best-reviewed boomer shooters ever, and one of the highest-rated by Steam users. Now though, it's received the ultimate praise. John Romero, the co-founder of id Software and designer of the first Doom game, has finally got around to playing it - and he loves it. PCGamesN Friday, May 23, 2025 1:42 PM I've been eagerly awaiting the Splitgate 2 open beta for a while. Set to stay live until it fully launches in the summer, it's an endless opportunity to play my most anticipated new FPS game, and now it's finally here. Imagine my disappointment, then, when I awoke this morning to find its servers offline - and they've remained that way the entire day. While some players have had a fairly smooth experience, there've been some widespread issues with cosmetic items not showing and general server instability. After hours of downtime, 1047 Game's CEO has apologized for the bumpy start to the open beta, promising that the studio is "working around the clock" to get things up and running again. PCGamesN Friday, May 23, 2025 1:32 PM Ayaneo just teased a revised version of its Flip gaming handheld. You know the one; it looks suspiciously like a Nintendo DS. Well, the likeness comparisons won't be going away anytime soon, as the Ayaneo Flip 1S DS adds a second, smaller display, which is exactly where the stylus touchscreen on Nintendo's handheld is placed. The Ayaneo Flip 1S DS has a good shot at being one of the best gaming handhelds, at least on paper, largely down to the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 powering it. Escape From Tarkov has earned its reputation as one of the most realistic, toughest FPS games on PC. But with EFT 1.0 in the pipeline, as well as the eventual Steam launch, Battlestate is still in the process of making its flagship shooter more grounded and true to reality. PCGamesN Friday, May 23, 2025 12:03 PM Between Civilization 7, Manor Lords, Tempest Rising, and so many more, if you're a developer, the world of strategy games is a tough one to inhabit right now. Standards are high. Competition is extensive. If players don't like your new update or latest DLC, they have plenty of other places to go. Crusader Kings 3 Khans of the Steppe, which introduces new governments and regions to the grand strategy game, has struggled somewhat on Steam so far. A month after it was released, the expansion has a 'mixed' rating from players, who cite some performance problems and balancing issues. But Paradox has a recovery plan. Good Smile Company started pre-orders for the next new Fire Emblem: Three Houses figure, which is a figma of the female version of Byleth. She'll debut in June 2026 in Japan, followed by a worldwide release. This one costs ¥12,800/$90.99.
As this is a figma, Byleth will be about six inches tall, be fully articulated. She will come with accessories from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. There will be three face plates representing a neutral expression, a smiling one, and one in which she is angrily shouting. She comes with one weapon, which is the Sword of the Creator, though there is also an additional effect part to show the fiery whip form of it. Multiple pairs of hands are also included for different poses.
Here's how the Fire Emblem: Three Houses Byleth figma will look when it debuts next year.

Level-5 announced that there will be free Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time Update the World DLC released worldwide. The CEO Akihiro Hino brought it up on social media, and the official website updated soon after. The statements noted it is due to how many people bought it on various platforms and supported the game. There's no release window for it yet, though the site noted the goal is for it to appear "as soon as possible."
There are no exact details about what we can expect from this add-on yet. However, it seems like some of the Fantasy Life i free DLC will involve endgame or post-game additions. Part of the Update the World additions specifically mention activities that will involve using "high-rarity weapons" and different types of later gear to complete them.
The other part of it sounds like it could mean more gear, furniture, or food items. Level-5 confirmed more recipes will be a part of the update. These are needed for every one of the game's crafting Lives to create new equipment, furniture, food, potions, mounts, and cosmetic items.
While we wait for the free DLC, Level-5 is sharing free content for Fantasy Life i in other ways. There is a Gift section in the in-game menu, and entering codes there allows us to get free items. These are things we can craft, find, or buy in-game normally. So far, two codes appeared the week the game launched. Note that if you're on the Switch, you need Nintendo Switch Online to redeem them.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is available now worldwide for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and it will also come to the Switch 2. There's no release window yet for the eventual free DLC.

In the case of Love Bullet, it's a series from inee about a young woman named Koharu. Kidrobot announced that it will release a new pair of Sonic the Hedgehog series plush that pairs up Shadow with Maria Robotnik. The duo is expected to debut in Q4 2025. The official site already opened pre-orders, and the set costs $34.99.
While we've seen multiple incarnations of Shadow the Hedgehog and Maria Robotnik, the appearances of the two plush are designed to resemble them from the recent release Sonic x Shadow Generations. Each one of them is seven and a half inches tall. They can be displayed separately or together, as they aren't connected. However, Kidrobot noted that Shadow's left hand and Maria's right hand both have magnets inside of them. So if you do place them next to each other, they can hold hands in a nod to a scene that's appeared in both games and the third live-action movie.
Here's a closer look at both stuffed toys from different angles. Kidrobot also shared a close-up of their hands, so we can better understand how the magnets work.

Ahead of the debut of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater in August 2025, Konami shared the opening movie that includes the new version of the theme song. The company also confirmed that Cynthia Harrell is again performing "Snake Eater," as she returned to rerecord the classic track.
While the song is familiar, the Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater opening movie is new. Konami noted Kyle Cooper rearranged and did it. There will also be ways to interact with it, though Konami didn't say exactly what will change as we watch and press buttons during it.
The video begins with newspapers setting the stage for the Cold War story before showing Naked Snake in different situations from the game. Other major characters like Colonel Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin, The Fear, The End, and The Boss also appear. Also, at the 1:30 mark you can actually see Naked Snake eating a snake that he cooked over a fire.
Here is the full Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater opening movie on YouTube with Cynthia Harrell's new recording of the theme song.
We've seen quite a few updates before this latest reveal. For example, Konami shared the Japanese collector's edition back in April 2025. That includes a bust of Naked Snake you can display and a FOX Unit patch you can add to clothing.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on August 28, 2025. The original game appeared on the PS2, and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D appeared on the 3DS.

Life is stressful. I don't know about you, but my days usually consist of working, preparing for the next day, and then running to the gym for a couple of hours a night. Sometimes, I just need to unwind, turn off my brain, and immerse myself in something fun and refreshing.
That's where Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time comes in. While I never got the chance to play the original Fantasy Life on the 3DS—by this point in time, I was shoulders deep into a Minecraft obsession that lasted over seven years—I decided to try out this latest entry on a whim.
Fantasy Life i is a casual game where you, the protagonist, live in a fantasy world revolving around "Lives." These Lives are day-to-day professions, from chefs and blacksmiths to powerful sword and magic-wielding warriors. Unlike most folks who specialize in one or two Lives, you have the freedom to explore all 14 available options while tackling the game's main storyline and exploring several in-game worlds.
Don't get me wrong; I've played dozens of casual, cozy games that mostly consist of questing, grinding for resources, and testing my design skills by slapping random decorations everywhere. Lately, though, I've been burnt out of these games and desperately needed something different. At least, that's until I hopped into this and remembered just what, exactly, makes me so happy while playing these.
![]()
I wasn't anticipating picking this game up at all. It looked fun, but I wasn't eager to deflate like a balloon after watching USD to CAD conversion rates turn a $60 game into over $90. Nonetheless, I needed something to get my spirits up after a series of stressful life events, and boy, my mood is higher than it has ever been.
I went into Fantasy Life i thinking I'd spend about five hours completing its story, 10 to 15 hours to max out my stats, then return to it a year later if I found time. Instead, I'm 25 hours in at the time of writing, and I'm nowhere near done with my playthrough. I haven't even gotten my first maxed-out skill, let alone all 14 on top of a main questline and optional requests. There's more to this game than it initially lets on, and it's easy to sink dozens of hours in without noticing.
I even have it open on my other monitor as I type this. You already know I'm swapping right back to it once I've finished spilling my thoughts on this page.
There's something about playing adorable games that makes me happy. Maybe it's from spending most of my life playing these types of games, or it could be the snowball effect of life's stress that makes just about anything cute affect my mind and mood more than usual. At this point, I'm not worried about thinking very hard about it. And yet, I've managed to play this for 25 hours in three days.
![]()
Why? What makes Fantasy Life i so different from other casual farming and life sim games I've played previously? Admittedly, not as much as you'd think. Where there's an interesting story, lovable characters, and funny puns scattered about, there's repetitiveness in nearly every skill behaving the exact same way. At times, it feels like I'm leveling the same skills repeatedly. Do I say that as a bad thing? Not at all. There's nothing I need more at the moment than familiarity, simplicity, and an excuse to sit back in my chair with a controller in hand as I spend several hours straight cutting down some trees. I even experienced an adorable scene with dancing leaves, which I happily showed my best friend the second I discovered it.
I love it all. I'm the same type of person who's invested over 1,000 hours into games like Disney Dreamlight Valley, The Sims franchise, and even MMOs like Runescape, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that I'd enjoy familiar, albeit somewhat repetitive gameplay loops, inside a cute, cheerful game. My only regret is not playing the original Fantasy Life to pull at some nostalgic heartstrings, but honestly, that might be for the better.
This has been a fresh experience that I've enjoyed far more than I anticipated, and I'm happy to finally have some stress relief. Now, don't mind me; I'm just going to go back and build up my Base Camp for the next couple of hours.
Do you have a fun, relaxing game you've been playing recently? I'd love to hear some of your favorite stories in the comments below.
