PCGamesN Thursday, October 31, 2024 7:51 PM One thing indie games do so wonderfully is to take a concept and explore it freely. When you're dealing with multi-million dollar titles, risks can be tough to justify but a small team can double down on something with almost wild abandon. That's how we get focused and brilliant games like Balatro, Celeste, Shovel Knight, or even Undertale. Buckshot Roulette is another that doubles down on itself to wonderful effect, and it just got even better thanks to a big update. PCGamesN Thursday, October 31, 2024 1:32 PM A Callisto Protocol roguelike is, frankly, the last thing I expected to come out this year. The Dead Space spiritual successor was quite the debut from Striking Distance Studios, so color me surprised when the team announced Redacted. Set in the same universe as the big-budget horror game, Redacted is a very different beast. The scares are replaced with infinite replayability, the action is ramped up, and there's a punk-rock aesthetic to boot. PCGamesN Thursday, October 31, 2024 1:48 PM Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered resurrects a game that fuses several legendary names into one particularly bizarre and brash third-person shooter. The 2011 original brought together Killer7 mastermind Goichi 'Suda 51' Suda, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, and Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka. The game that resulted bears striking aspects of all its creators, making it a rather unique prospect - and one unashamed, even excessive, in its bawdiness in a way that is certain to split opinion. It's not often that one of the best graphics cards from the last few years features in the recommended tier of a game system requirements, but Off The Grid is an exception to the rule. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, October 31, 2024 12:48 PM Part of the fun of Dragon Age's fantasy is that it's inconsistent - or at least, inconsistent by the standards of fantasy RPGs, which often break down into a million neatly organised and interlocking codex entries. It all rides on who you speak to. The humans believe one thing about the origins and workings of Thedas, the elves another, the qunari something else entirely. These differences are the basis for many factional disagreements and thus, many core series plot developments. According to former lead writer David Gaider, however, there's an "uber-plot" behind it all that may one day be resolved and bring the series to a close, assuming BioWare continue to refer to his original (and closely guarded) narrative documents. |

One of the main new features in Monster Hunter Wilds are weapon combinations: the ability to equip two different weapons at once. This allows players to combine any pair of their favorite weapons and swap between them in the middle of a hunt or while exploring without having to go back to a camp.
This can also be a little overwhelming. With fourteen weapon types in the game it can make it hard to choose which two you want to take into your foray into the world of Monster Hunter Wilds. To help with that, here are some weapon combinations that can work in most any situation.
Best Weapon Combinations in Monster Hunter Wilds
Your Weapon choices in Monster Hunter Wilds can be changed at a moment's notice. At any Base Camp or Pop-Up Camp you can select a primary and secondary weapon to take with you into the field. Swapping between them is only possible when riding your Seikret lizard mount, but hitting the right button on the D-Pad on controller will allow you to summon the Seikret and swap out your weapons in real time. Most weapons also have a number of mounted attacks allowing you to hack and slash at monsters while on the go.
Bow and Long Sword
This Weapon combination gives you a great range of options in any Wilds hunt. The bow allows you to maintain distance while gauging the monster's timing and movement patterns while raining down arrows on your target. The Long Sword comes in once you know the rhythm, letting you parry monster attacks and giving you an option to cut off valuable monsters parts, such as the tail. These two weapons flow together well granting you a wide range of ways to press the attack.
Hammer and Great Sword
This specific set allows you to deal two types of damage (cutting and blunt) with weapons that pack a punch. The Hammer allows you to break heads and horns on monsters very easily while also knocking monsters out and stunning them for solid periods of time. This lets you charge up the Great Sword swings, dealing massive damage and potentially cutting off monster parts in the process. Both weapons open up opportunities for one another while, while at the same time covering up for the things they lack. The Hammer has a number of very fast attacks, while the Great Sword swings let you take advantage of the openings the Hammer brings up.
Heavy Bow Gun and Dual Blades
Another pair that offers a series of close and ranged attacks. The Heavy Bowgun is here mostly for being able to really lay down fire from a distance without having to worry as much about stamina. It allows players to have a large array of damage while blasting openings in the monster's defenses. The Dual Blades lets you dash in and essentially dash up and around monsters, giving you some invincibility frames in the process, while cutting way at their weak point. They work in concert by letting the Bowgun open up wounds and weak points and then taking advantage of those weak points.
Switch Axe and Light Bowgun
This Wilds weapon combo centers around filling in for downtime. Light Bowgun has some very strong charged shots and elemental bullets but limited shots of the latter and the charge shot needs time to build back up. Switch Axe too has energy and ramping-up mechanics that require you to expend and build up your phial energy for the more damaging skills that expel the Sword mode charge and phial energy. The weapon regains energy when not in use or from some of the more risky axe mode attacks so combining this with the Light Bowgun maintains the same kind of mobility for both weapons while letting you deal with aggressive monsters from any distance. Switching between the two makes sure there's not a major moment of downtime where you're waiting for your weapon to recharge.
Hunting Horn and Anything
This last combo is more of a universal solvent. Being able to bring the hunting horn with any weapon you like means you get to bring the Hunting Horn's potent buffs with you wherever you go. This weapon allows you to empower your attacks through buffs, or even help bolster your defense in sticky situations. Not only that, but it's great for co-op, since these buffs will also apply to your party members. And with the weapon swapping system, you won't be relegated to just being a support this time around.
Don't let this dissuade you from trying out whatever two weapons speak to you and the individual playstyle you might discover on the way. Monster Hunter is, at its core, a game series about experimentation and Monster Hunter Wilds opens that wide open.
Monster Hunter Wilds releases for Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5 and PC on February 28, 2025. The open beta is running until November 3, 2024.

The blankets also have some fun details, such as the card description along with the Attack and Defense of the individual cards on the front. Unfortunately, the collection of blankets are only available in Japan, and through participating Taito locations.

Trying to update a decades-old game is never an easy task, and it's an even bigger challenge when the game in question is a cherished classic. While Dragon Quest was already a popular series in Japan, it's the third game that really kicked it into the cultural icon status it still enjoys in its home country to this day. As a result of that, Dragon Quest III is no stranger to remakes. That itself presents a further hurdle for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. How do you stay faithful to the spirit of the original while also making enough changes to ensure this isn't just another remake? Based on my time with the first several hours of the PC version of the game, Square Enix might have managed to gracefully thread that needle.
The most obvious change here comes from the presentation. Just as the title says, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake uses the HD-2D style that debuted in Octopath Traveler and has shown up in a few other titles since then. For a series that tends to root itself firmly in its own traditions, I can't think of a better way to update the look of the sprite-based entries. Even the simplest of areas look fantastic, and the game takes advantage of this refresh to add significantly more complexity and detail to most locations. Castles truly feel large and ornate, towns more lively and vibrant, and caves more claustrophobic and mysterious. It's an incredible transformation.
Battles don't benefit from this facelift to quite the same extent, but the more complex backdrops and impressive lighting effects are a welcome update. Monsters are more animated than ever, and I particularly enjoyed the new death animations. Adhering to tradition, most of the action in the battles is viewed from a first-person point of view. Your own party members are only visible between rounds. With the sprites as detailed as they are, even going so far as to show what kind of weapon they have equipped, it's a bit of shame we don't get to see them in action during fights.
Having been around the Dragon Quest III block more than a few times in my life, I was eager to see what might be new in this remake. As you might expect, the newly-expanded areas have a lot of space to fill. Inside of towns and dungeons, that generally translates to more fully-realized spaces visually, with a few more pots and barrels to check for loot strewn about. Overall layouts have remained similar to the originals thus far, and I would be surprised if that changed later in the game. You can now run by holding down a button, which helps you traverse these larger areas at a good pace.
The overworld map, on the other hand, has a lot more to see. With everything being a lot bigger, incentives to explore off the beaten path are more important than ever. So far, those come in two forms. Sparkling spots are hard to miss, and they can be searched to find caches of items and gear. They're virtually impossible to miss, especially at night, but trying to reach them will sometimes require a little hike. Slightly harder to spot are Secret Spots. Certain features of the landscape might look out of place, and if your hunch is right you might find a small location with some valuable treasures, informative NPCs, and more.
Another new element comes in form of the new vocation, the Monster Wrangler. I benched my usual Fighter in favor of bringing one of these along with me. It's an interesting character type. A fairly strong attacker, and suitable for backing up your Hero in that regard. The Monster Wrangler has its own set of abilities derived from monsters, and it gains new ones as you get to know more monsters. Befriending monsters is a big part of increasing the power of this class, but it doesn't work in the same way it did in previous games. Instead of recruiting them via battles, you'll find friendly monsters in specific locations around the world. Sometimes you need only approach them, but at other times you'll need to lure them or sneak up on them.
Once you find a friendly monster, it will automatically head to the Monster Arena. In previous versions of Dragon Quest III, the Monster Arena was a place where you could wager gold on monster battles. In Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, you have a more direct role. You compose a team from the friendly monsters you've found, then coach them in multi-round tournaments. If you win, you'll earn money and prizes. At the point in the game I've played so far, only a couple of tournaments are available. With monster collecting tied so strongly with empowering the Monster Wrangler, it seems likely the Monster Arenas will ultimately play a far larger role than they did in the past.
Just in the first several hours of the game alone, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is impressive. It appears that veterans will have lots of new things to enjoy, while newcomers get to experience this classic with a fantastic new lick of paint and plenty of added quality of life features. If the rest of the game is as good as what I've played so far, JRPG fans are in for a real treat.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will be released on PCs via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Microsoft Xbox Series X/S on November 14th, 2024.

The official Japanese X (or Twitter account) for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End shared a visual of protagonist Frieren and Fern in Halloween themed attire. The illustration features both characters in new outfits with black, white, and orange coloring, to suit the "holiday."
You can take a look at the Halloween visual of Frieren and Fern below:
The caption behind the characters reads "Magic of Halloween," with several pumpkins of varying colors above them. The characters are also wearing large, wide-brimmed black hats and have orange pumpkins strapped to their hips.
In September 2024, a teaser for the second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End was shared. This included a visual featuring items associated with the characters Frieren, Fern, and Stark. Shortly after, TOHO ANIMATION posted a video featuring the same visual, more or less confirming that the second season was already in production. While little information has been revealed about the upcoming season, it's suggested that the next arc the anime could explore could be related to the First Class Wizard Exam Arc. Additionally, Madhouse will be returning for the second season of the anime.

Capcom has released a new Dragon's Dogma 2 patch that added enhanced graphics options for PS5 Pro users. It also, as usual, addressed various bugs across all platforms. It is available as of October 31, 2024.
The Dragon's Dogma 2 patch introduces "PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution" (PSSR), which uses AI upscaling to improve visual clarity on the PS5 Pro. Additionally, a new "Balanced" graphics setting lets PS5 Pro players choose a middle ground between performance and visual quality.
When it comes to the bug fixes in the Dragon's Dogma 2 update, those are across all platforms. The notes for them can also get a bit specific. The patch resolves a progression bug in the "Nesting Troubles" quest, during which the quest would fail to advance even after players threw the required poison jar. Additional adjustments address issues with pawns with "Calm" or "Straightforward" traits, who would stop moving after attempting the "Levitate" action. Capcom also corrected a bug causing the spell "Maelstrom" to become excessively powerful when Myrddin was part of the player's party. A mini-map glitch that caused unwanted zooming while passing through the Hermit's Retreat has been fixed, along with minor sound glitches in the character editor.
Capcom previously added new graphics and performance modes in its October 17, 2024 update for Dragon's Dogma 2. That offered enhanced display options across all platforms.
Dragon's Dogma 2 is currently available on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Treyarch is back after four years with a new Call of Duty installment: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Despite the lengthy development time for this entry, compared to most annualized titles, it arrives with mixed results. The gameplay is top tier for the series, but the general content and maps greatly hinder what could otherwise be one of the best entries in the franchise.
It has been far too long since a Call of Duty game impressed me. The last one to do so was Call of Duty: Cold War. Before that, ignoring Black Ops 3 and the Infinite Warfare I helped test, Advanced Warfare. Black Ops 6 comes the closest to recapturing what I love about this series in a long time, but it falls short because of everything aside from pure movement and gameplay.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 gets the "feel" of the experience right. Its omnimovement is single-handedly the best movement style in a Call of Duty game outside of the jetpack era I dearly miss. It feels like the right balance between the normal boots-on-the-ground movement and aforementioned jetpacks. You can sprint and move in any direction without issue. Want to sprint sideways or backwards? Sure, you can do just that by moving your character in that direction without any penalties.
Then there is the diving. You can dive or slide in any direction too, as well as fire your weapon with little issue no matter which action you take. It is so smooth to use, even though it has a bit of a steep learning curve. But once you get used to the feature, it is impossible to go to the old style of games like Call of Duty: Vanguard or MW3. The natural feel of diving around a corner, instantly laying down, performing a 180-degree turn to look behind me, and firing at someone before they get me first never gets old.
It also helps that the gunplay in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is fantastic too. Weapons are, fortunately, one area in which Treyarch still never misses. Whether you like assault rifles or SMGs, there is something for everyone. Sure, ARs currently have the advantage, but that is mostly because of the maps. I adored weapons like the AMES AR just as much as the speedy AK-74u-like KSV SMG. Pair the excellent weapons with the genre-defining Omnimovement, and this is the best a Call of Duty game has felt in a long time.
Unfortunately, the juxtaposition of those positives only highlight the problems with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which involve pretty much everything else. For one, the maps in this game are possibly the worst ever available with the launch of a title. There is not a single standout, memorable multiplayer map. Sure, there are some decent maps like Skyline, Vault, and Payback. But even the best of the worst are pretty forgettable in the grand scheme of the series, especially considering how horribly tiny the size of them are.
Take a map like Skyline, for example. It looks beautiful, thanks to its luxurious penthouse setting. The layout, however, is a bit odd. The different floors don't flow well together and feel a bit messy. This really shows in game modes like Search & Destroy, due to the awkward bomb placements. These inherent flaws are present in the best of the multiplayer maps.
Past years of bad Call of Duty games at least introduced great new maps like Berlin, Bocage, Hotel, and Rio. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 doesn't have a single map that competes with any of those. Unfortunately, this extends to other modes too, like Zombies. The return to traditional Zombies is welcome, but both Terminus and Liberty Falls are a bit lackluster. I like them more than the multiplayer maps, but even they struggle. This is mostly due to the continual invasion of Warzone mechanics into Zombies. Armor plates and the like just don't have a place in this mode.
The singleplayer campaign in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 fares a bit better than its fellow game modes. This is one of the more engaging narratives thus far. The mission variety is great, and these range from a classic casino break-in to bombastic wartime set pieces. The visuals are great, and fan-favorite characters like Woods return. The story itself doesn't do anything too terribly interesting, but this campaign is certainly more serviceable and complete than the last several games.
It is this general lack of memorable content, or downright terrible additions, that hold back Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 significantly. This could easily be the fourth best game in the series if it had the content and maps to match its gameplay. Even still, that gameplay is enough for me to have some fun and recommend this title to others. There is something so enticing about the Omnimovement system that I hope is in every non-jetpack title from now on. The incredible feel of BO6 is enough to keep me hooked for now until, hopefully, Treyarch gives us worthy content to enjoy.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is available right now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Mouthwashing is a harrowing game with a surreal method of delivery that transcends the whole experience into something more akin to an art form. Through unfolding delusions and self-soothing hallucinations, the story delves into humanity's darkness in a setting that inspires a deep, primordial fear. It's hard to recommend this to everyone, but if you're the type who enjoys artsy walking simulators with a tinge of body and psychological horror, then this would be right up your alley.
At only about two hours long, give or take, Mouthwashing is not a long game at all. However, Wrong Organ manages to tell the story with surprising efficiency. It takes place on the Tulpar, a freighter spaceship. Its crew consists of five people: Captain Curly, co-pilot Jimmy, nurse Anya, mechanic Swansea, and intern Daisuke. Almost a hundred and fifty days into the year-long journey, Curly shockingly disengages the autopilot and crashes the spaceship into a massive asteroid, leaving them stranded in space. The story jumps around when it comes to time and perspectives, drip feeding you more information about the crew's predicament. When we get to see what happened prior to the crash, we play as Curly. Then, when it jumps to after the crash, we take control of Jimmy.
As you can imagine, being trapped in space for months while your horribly disfigured captain is moaning in agony in the medical bay doesn't do wonders for morale. The crew starts to unravel, their flaws becoming more apparent as tensions run high. Jimmy has taken Curly's place as the captain, and he is not great at boosting anyone's spirits. In fact, he's kind of a condescending jerk when it comes to the way he treats the crew, especially Anya and Curly. While I won't reveal the twist that occurs about halfway through the game as to what in the world happened to the Tulpar in the first place, the game is a master class in how you can push video game writing to its limits.
I'm amazed at how Mouthwashing feels like a short story that I would've read and studied in my university literature classes. Yet Wrong Organ presents the story in a way that could only work in a visual medium. It runs a really tight ship with the storytelling, and no scene feels unnecessary, no matter how trippy or bizarre it is in the moment. The way it presents the characters' psyches and how they start to devolve is so atmospheric and gripping. It instantly pulls you into the story.
Despite relatively short game time, there are so many memorable scenes in Mouthwashing. This is true both with context, framing, and sheer levels of "What in the world am I looking at?" value. To be honest, I decided to play and review it after I saw my friend talk about the title on social media. She said, and I quote, "I can't get Mouthwashing out of my mind." And you know what? My mind is still there in the foam-filled, bloody corridors of the Tulpar as well.
Outside of the disgusting and claustrophobic visuals, the game occupies a really interesting time space. It's futuristic enough that there's an entire company hauling cargo across space. However, there's a retro filter over everything, the characters look like they migrated from the PS1, and the TVs that appear in Jimmy's delusions all show old-timey cartoons or video. Most of the game consists of walking around based on what the crew needs you to do, or what Jimmy or Curly need to do in the moment.
The game's objectives are fairly clear, but what's really cool about Mouthwashing is how it uses objectives to heighten tension. A memorable one was "Find the gun," which was a surprise considering in all of my journeys through the Tulpar, I didn't see anything resembling a gun. Why would I need a gun anyway? Did something happen? Will something happen? Showing your objective first and forcing you to uncover the context later is an interesting way to raise anticipation. Since the majority of the game jumps around the timeline, it can take some time to reorient yourself in the current situation. So having to do something while also trying to figure out why you're doing something really adds to the general sense of confusion and discombobulation until the truth of the Tulpar crash comes out.
Because the crash caused the crew to use foam to patch up the ship and prevent certain death from the vacuum of space, the Tulpar from Jimmy's perspective differs from Curly's. I don't believe that Wrong Organ intended this, but between the oppressive atmosphere and my own terrible sense of direction, I thought I was legitimately losing my mind while playing this. I'd go into a room, walk out, and the corridor looks different from what I remembered. Thankfully, I figured out that this was due to my shoddy short-term memory and unfamiliarity with the ship. This feeling went away after I became accustomed to navigating the Tulpar. Granted, there are some times when the game uses hallucinations or metaphors to shake up the ship's layout. So you can't blame me for thinking this was happening in more mundane moments!
If there's one thing that kind of takes away from the experience, it's the combat and stealth segments. They felt unnecessary and clunky, and it really messes up the pacing in a game that's otherwise so good with that. The stealth segment in particular feels like it goes on for way too long. I understand that there's a metaphorical meaning behind it all, and I have my own theories for what it represents. But man, it really could've been a lot shorter. I'm not sure if Wrong Organ added these gameplay change-ups to avoid the walking simulator stigma or what. But it's the one dead pixel in an otherwise perfect experience.
It's hard to talk about Mouthwashing without giving away some of its more disturbing revelations and scenes. Yet those are the ones that stayed with me the most. The refrain in the game—that a person's worst moments don't define them or make them a monster—is something to keep in mind as the truth of what happened, along with the frayed mental states of the Tulpar crew, unravel over the course of the story.
Mouthwashing is readily available on PCs.

Back in 2020, Qureate announced a Prison Princess escape game. Now in 2024, a sequel called Prison Princess: Trapped Allure is on the way, with the game due to debut on the Switch and Steam on November 21, 2024.
The Steam product page for Prison Princess: Trapped Allure is live, but there's still only the eShop page for the original for Nintendo's console at the moment. Unlike the original title, it will be on both platforms right away. Previously, the PC port showed up after the Switch one. As in the first title, players are the ghost of a hero who died when attempting to fight the Demon King Hamehameha. However, while you are dead, you can still help save the day by helping the princesses and your allies escape from the Demon King's castle and dangers.
There's one new princess this time joining returning princesses Aria and Zena. She's named Julietta. She's the reason we're even at the castle, as the mysterious princess summoned us there. Likewise, Aria and Zena ended up captured again while going to fight the Demon King. Fellow allies include Charlotte the knight, Finanche the mage, and Chouquette the bandit. As you go through the castle, you'll need to investigate areas and solve puzzles to bring all three princesses together and search for a way out. The official site also showed a number of screenshots, which include both investigation and fanservice moments.
Prison Princess: Trapped Allure will debut on the Nintendo Switch and PC on November 21, 2024, and the Qureate game will be available in English, Japanese, and both simplified and traditional Chinese.

There are big changes for Dragon Ball FighterZ characters Broly (DBS), Gogeta (SSGSS), Goku (GT), Janemba, and Kefla, and there's a video going over what they are like in-game. This highlights their 1.38 changes in action. The full patch notes for the Dragon Ball FighterZ update are 12 pages long, with Bandai Namco releasing them as a pdf file for people to peruse.
All of the 1.38 Dragon Ball FighterZ patch changes tend to be character adjustments involving rebalancing or changes to how moves work. There are 11 changes to Broly, for example. 13 of Gogeta's moves were adjusted, with the most influential changes being made to his Standing Heavy Attack. There are 10 changes to both Janemba and Kefla moves. There are only nine changes to the GT version of Goku in Dragon Ball FighterZ, but the Reverse Kamehameha alterations that make it a jumping attack and keep armor from blocking anti-air are especially notable.
Here's the full Dragon Ball FighterZ patch footage, which starts with Goku (GT), moves on to Janemba, goes to Gogeta (SSGSS), shows Broly (DBS), and ends with Kefla.
Even with its age, Dragon Ball FighterZ tends to get regular updates. For example, rollback was added to it. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also launched in February 2024.
Dragon Ball FighterZ is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
