The goal of a group of heroes is to save the day. That's the situation in the light novel Who Killed the Hero by Daken. A group of individuals, who trained together and were called upon by the country's royal family to face the Demon Lord, did manage to save the day. However, in so doing they also lost the hero. The one person everyone rallied around is gone. Now, years after he's gone, the kingdom is compiling a history and investigation into what happened, with interviews with his three allies, and the mystery of what really happened to the prophesied hero finally comes to light.
Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for the first volume of the Who Killed the Hero light novel below.
For those unfamiliar with Who Killed the Hero, the structure is akin to Oshi no Ko. In that series, we are learning about what happened to Ai Hoshino and her children Aqua and Ruby, with the main "story" set up as a flashback while people talk about the production of a documentary about her. (If you're unfamiliar with Oshi no Ko, World War Z is another work it feels similar in structure to.) In Who Killed the Hero, the story is both about the hero Ares Schmidt and what happened to him after he defeated the Demon Lord, as well as insight into his three allies the Sword Saint, the Great Sage mage Solon Barclay, and the Holy Maiden priestess Maria Lauren. It's as much their story as it is his, since they're the survivors and all four attended Falm Academy as potential hero candidates in training.
![]()
The difference here is that, unlike Oshi no Ko, Who Killed the Hero is more akin to World War Z and enforces the interview structure. So we'll read through the interviews with characters like Leon, Maria, and Solon, then we'll go through "fragment" chapters that offer a more firsthand look at a direct memory and experience involving that character and Ares to help further establish their relationship, their past, and their motive.
Yes, motive, as Daken frames Who Killed the Hero as the sort of story in which maybe Ares, the prophesied hero, didn't die in the line of duty when facing the Demon Lord. That maybe something else, or someone else, resulted in him meeting his untimely demise. This means, as we read through the interviews, we end up perhaps taking a bit more of a critical look at what people are saying, how they say it, and what the interactions between each of them and Ares were really like.
For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I won't get too into it. However, as an example, the interview with Leon regarding Ares the Hero begins with a simple statement from him. "He was my friend." We then learn this wasn't always so, due to pride and preconceived prejudices Leon, as a noble, had against Ares, a young man who was a commoner from a normal village. Especially since Leon was also considered a prime hero candidate with the skills necessary to save the day and was both naturally talented and invested in by his family.
Who Killed the Hero is absolutely fascinating. Going through the story in this way, and the execution of Ares' story, is fantastic. The pacing is perfect. Also, the direction Daken takes means that in volume 1, we're learning Ares' story. Volume 2 will follow a whole new hero and their death. So we get the satisfaction of everything being wrapped up and perhaps only continuing with certain volumes if we really connect with those characters and mysteries.
The first volume of Who Killed the Hero is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 2 on November 11, 2025.

This isn't just the rooster-blue-tinted goggles of nostalgia, no: it's the lost sense of freedom and joy and the connection to the real football world in Road to World Cup 98 that make it a beautiful bit of sandbox that stood the test of time, and a painfully sweet reminder of what a fun sports game could look like.
What comes to your mind when you think of a World Cup FIFA game? A chance to pick one team and steer them through the qualification, then play with all the usual big dogs in the real group stage, right? Well, yes, that is more or less what the experience is like these days. But boy oh boy, did things used to be different back in 1998.
There's no reason for me to pretend that the actual match engine or the gameplay experience is anything to write home about today, but that isn't really the point. After all, does anyone play FIFA's league or career modes against the AI for a challenge? It's just a canvas to paint on, and the more colors you can apply, the better.
And boy oh boy, was it a colorful palette.
The World Cup, your way
RTWC 98 splits the World Cup game mode into three separate stages that you can jump into at any time once you have unlocked them. The qualification, the group stage, and the knockout stage are all your oyster, and you can go straight to the last sixteen if you wish. And you are not limited to the solitary team: you can choose to simultaneously manage a ton of teams from a list of all 172 FIFA-registered nations—a massive roster that wouldn't return until 2010—and do with them as you wish. You can play out a knockout stage of the World Cup featuring 16 of the worst teams of the world. No one is going to stop you. Not even Footix, the blue rooster that was the mascot of the tournament, who keeps on popping up in the menus over and over again with silly little idle animations.
When you select one of the sixteen real-life stadiums to play in, a video plays showcasing the locale and the venue. It was a nice touch that connected the rudimentary visuals with what they truly tried to represent, and it was a neat if small cultural touch that showed the test of time.
And that's just the World Cup stuff. The game also featured a whole bunch of leagues and the many clubs involved, making it a full-fledged footie experience. But the real joy, as I'm sure many of you are screaming at the screen, is the indoor five-versus-five extravaganza.
Anything your heart desires
Remember the freedom I was talking about? Well, you can pit an MLS club against a European national team in a five-a-side indoor match, no questions asked. Just pure, silly joy, all underpinned by some decent electronica and a bit of Britpop.
EA stands for Electronic Arts, remember? While they have long been more about farts, it's worth remembering where the company first positioned itself. And in a time when games were not as big a deal as they are today, branding-wise, there was more room for freedom and goofiness.
RTWC 98 is truly a trip down memory lane. Featuring nations no longer on the map and commentators who are no longer with us, letting you play football as freely as we can never do these days, makes it a special experience even in 2025.
To my mind, the last flames of this were extinguished four years down the line. Playing through the qualification stage in FIFA 2002, I was shocked and disappointed to see that it only included the qualis. But even that game, truncated as it may have been compared to RTWC, included fun little outtake videos like this:
We won't see the likes of this again in any ever-so-official, microtransaction-laden football game. And that is such a shame.

Released back in 2010, One Chance is a bite-sized Adobe Flash adventure that asks what you'd do with the final week of your life? The world as we know it is fast approaching its end, and it's all because of your scientific discovery. What was meant to be the cure to cancer has twisted into a far faster killer, and now it's airborne.
Your choices are clear: Spend what little time you have left with your family or keep pushing on to find a cure to the mess you created. While there are multiple endings available for One Chance, there's also the unique element that stops you from exploring other avenues. You really only have one chance to play through the game. Whatever ending you achieve is set in stone. The outcome you get as a result of your decisions is saved even upon relaunching the game or reopening the tab. The final shot shows the aftermath of Earth, how much life remains on its soil. It can be hopeful or completely hopeless, full of the vibrancy of life, or devoid of color.
The only way to play through the entire game again is to launch it on another browser. Alternatively, you can reset your progress by refreshing the page before you see an ending. This will bring you back to the start of One Chance.
Here we'll go through each ending and how you can get it. No ending is a particularly happy one, but there's a "best ending" when viewed through the protagonist's perspective.
Table of contents
How many endings does One Chance have?
![]()
There are four main endings in One Chance. With only the directional buttons to move and the spacebar to interact, there's not much opportunity to make a difference with civilization coming to an end. Rather, it's what you choose to do with your time that determines John's fate. Do you continue to go to work, or do you skip it, ignoring the consequences of your actions or facing them head-on? Do you spend your final moments with your loved ones or throw it all away, engaging in acts you previously wouldn't dream of ever doing? Most outcomes are determined by what you choose to do when there are three days left.
One Chance full walkthrough: All endings, explained
Each day starts the same, with a slight variation in what John's wife and daughter say. John is a man of no words as the lore is delivered through the people that he chooses to surround himself with and via the morning newspaper.
Find a cure
![]()
No matter the distractions to skip work and celebrate, to stay home with your family, scared of what's to come, you must go to work every day. John needs the full six days working to fix the mistake he's made. Half of the population dies, including John's wife (on day four), but the cruel joke is that the cure is made upon heading into work on the sixth and final day. As the last scientist at his workplace actively trying to find the cure, he succeeds. John immediately cures himself and then Molly. The final shot is them spending the afternoon at the quiet park, knowing that some part of this world is forever cracked, but not fully broken.
It's uncertain whether either character actually survived or if it was too late. Relaunching One Chance shows that John's cure worked as the plant life is thriving once more (a conclusion that isn't present in the other endings). But neither John nor Molly is in view. I think this is the best ending in the game, even though many have died, because John was able to find the cure and save what remains of the population. You can still see John at the park if he dies there, so I assume this means the pair survived and were able to go home.
Family matters
![]()
Keep going to work even when Boss tells you to go be with your family. Then go back to your family when your colleagues appear at the front door on day four. This will stop Jim from spawning. Neither Penny nor Molly is home when the final morning starts. Go to the park on the sixth day. Molly spawns in but quickly vanishes, leaving John alone to die on the park bench. Although John is by himself, this ending means his family died to the virus that wiped out civilization and the Earth's flora, rather than Penny taking her own life or being murdered by Jim.
Another variation of this same ending is to keep going to work until Penny dies and Molly stops going to school. Then, keep taking Molly to the Park instead of Work, choosing to spend your final days with your daughter instead of researching for the cure.
Nothing matters
![]()
With the end of the world as we know it nearing each passing day, you can choose to spend it skipping work and betraying your family. The key choices here are to skip work on the first day, avoid staying with your family, and to cheat on your wife with Annie on day four. Going to the rooftop both times is scripted, but you should work when Boss tries to send you home on day three.
Penny quickly figures out this betrayal and takes Molly away, leaving John on his own. This ending concludes with John sitting by himself in the park, unable to fix what he's done after only causing more pain before death takes him. You can also die alone in the lab trying to find the cure on the final day if you failed to go to work before the sixth day.
Devastation
![]()
For this ending, you need to skip work wherever possible. Go to the roof as you're supposed to on the second and third day to see Matthew jump off and the Boss send you home. Go home rather than work. Choose to stay with your family when asked to come back by your Boss on the fourth day.
You're forced to go to work with two days left on the clock. Jim will be here waiting for you, blaming you for what's happening to the world. He charges at you with a knife, splitting this ending into two variations. You either fail to defend yourself in time, meaning John dies from the knife wound, or you successfully disarm Jim, only to find out he's murdered your family and hung himself when you return home that very night. Head to the roof at work to "Give up" and complete this tragic tale.

Whatever happened to Marissa Marcel? That's what you're trying so desperately to figure out. There's something tugging at you to keep pressing on through the footage. Perhaps it's morbid curiosity, that strange desire to peel back the curtain and see the darkness behind that enchanting model-turned-lead-actress. Three unreleased films, each starring the same ageless woman... something's not adding up.
![]() Careful of what lies behind the curtain
From the mind of Sam Barlow (Her Story and Telling Lies), the mysterious and completely captivating realm of IMMORTALITY is unlike anything I've ever experienced. There is nothing quite like this game. It's a hypnotizing adventure that's simple on paper, yet super effective thanks to its unravelling mystery and fantastic acting. Fulfilling the role of a film technician meets detective, you must sift through dozens of seemingly random film clips and piece them together to figure out what happened to the lead star. Gameplay consists of standard controls such as play and stop, fast-forward or rewind, and clicking on a subject to move onto a new scene. It's much like watching a DVD, but the entire game feels like easter eggs hidden in the extras menu.
![]() Enticing and addictive—there's something warning you to leave yet you cannot stop looking
You may feel a strange uneasiness while playing this game. Even the main menu feels wrong. It's as if the film reels are cursed, and that discovering the thing that happened to Marcel might make it happen to you, too. As you're an unnamed protagonist, IMMORTALITY plays as though your life is on the line or that Marissa Marcel really was an actress who mysteriously disappeared. The one-liner plot is surprisingly more than enough to keep its hooks into you, where the story is carried by the impressive acting that only pulls you in further into its enigma. The use of full-motion video was a brilliant choice as it strengthens the overall believability of the game, thus creating greater immersion. You actually feel like an investigator trying to uncover a dark mystery.
Knowing you're watching real people act during a movie shoot that appears unrelated to the overarching plot crafts a strange and uncanny setting. While it's not marketed as a horror game, there are a lot of moments that may unsettle you. It's rare that I get creeped out by a video game, but IMMORTALITY sure managed to get a reaction out of me multiple times. I don't want to spoil anything, but the truth is hidden in the black and white, and it's a hard truth to accept. The revelation in this interactive movie will likely surprise and shock you with its unpredictability.
![]() Do you dare to jump into the rabbit hole that is this FMV masterpiece?
Using basic gameplay that anyone can quickly master, there's enough variety in IMMORTALITY as you're not only enjoying the three movies that start to make sense the more clips you find and piece together, but there's the overarching plotline that something outside of these movies is the real reason for Marcel's disappearance. The uneasiness is accompanied by a sense of dread, like something is looking back at you as you're watching the film. Marcel is larger than life at times and in ways beyond our grasp, as if she's looking back at the viewer, even though you're watching clips from a movie that was never released and a rising star that has long been forgotten.
The actors are brilliant as they tackle the role of their movie characters and their "real" selves. Mixing behind the scenes with movie clips can feel surreal at times, but it's Manon Gage playing as Marissa Marcel that truly steals the show (which is very fitting as it's the entire point of IMMORTALITY).
Every movie has a distinct look and feel to it, and all are shot in different years. Ambrosio filmed 1968, Minsky in 1970, and the last titled Two of Everything in 1999. The story spans across 31 years, told through the movie scenes. Yet Marcel is ageless. She's preserved in time, like revisiting Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The plot of each movie intertwines with the mystery, feeling like chapters in Marcel's autobiography rather than watching fiction unfold on screen. Like a detective working on a case, the mystery is a tightly wound ball with threads leading to places you'd never expect.
So, are you interested in figuring out what happened to Marissa Marcel? IMMORTALITY is available on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Netflix (mobile only).

As Microsoft slowly moves away from exclusivity and embraces multiplatformity, the reasons to own an Xbox continue to evaporate slowly but surely. Now, rumors are circulating that Gears of War: E-Day is going to cross the Rubicon over to Sony's territory, so what's even the point of Xbox anymore?
According to Insider Gaming, Microsoft is planning to release Gears of War: E-Day, its upcoming AAA title, to the PlayStation 5, fundamentally supplanting any ideas of exclusivity players might have had. Though this is currently just a rumor and not a concrete confirmation, it'd be nothing strange considering Microsoft and Xbox's moves lately.
Just recently, Microsoft migrated Forza Horizon 5 over to the PlayStation 5, a move that proved more than right as Forza became the best-selling PlayStation game of 2025 at over three million copies sold. This number stands to grow over the years, especially if Microsoft and Sony start striking deals for their subscription services, Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.
Gears of War: Reloaded, too, will join the PlayStation family, further indicating that Microsoft has all but given up on any and all forms of exclusivity and first-party console offerings.
![]()
While there's a partnered Xbox "console" on the way, the ROG Xbox Ally X, there will likely never be a proper home Xbox console again, considering that there are literally zero reasons to own one. Unless Sony shakes hands with its biggest rival and starts its own multiplatforming process, perhaps there'd be reasons to purchase a new Xbox at some point down the line, if Microsoft ever even bothers to engineer it.
After all, with exclusives done away with as a concept, all you'd care for then is hardware capability, and that's an easy situation for picking sides. Right now, though, Xbox is simply a thing of the past as a console, having no first-party exclusives (every game is at least released on PC, too), no new consoles (to rival the PS5 Pro), nor anything special about it hardware-wise to justify the purchase.
What do you think, Destructoid? Should Microsoft continue down this multiplatform path? Or perhaps pivot and strive for more first-party development? Let us know below.

Friday the 13th, an iconic horror franchise, is getting a new video game (and movie) down the line. This was confirmed by its copyright holder, Horror Inc., who, instead of somehow reviving the now-unavailable Friday the 13th game, is pursuing new ventures for whatever corporate reason.
Released back in 2017, Friday the 13th: The Game was among the most unique horror game experiences out there. Sharing a lot of DNA with early Dead by Daylight, it saw several players stuck with the indestructible Jason Voorhees, also controlled by a player. The Survivors had to find ways to escape, whereas Jason had to hunt them down one by one and ensure no one left the map alive. Sound familiar?
Well, because of its license expiring in 2024, Friday the 13th: The Game had to be shut down. Despite selling approximately 2.4 million copies on Steam, the game was delisted at the end of 2023, and then axed (or macheted) on Dec. 31, 2024, seven years after first launching, while the community tried to keep it alive via various means. It still retains a cult following among dedicated players who never got over the fact that BHVR doesn't have a deal with Horror Inc. to put Jason into DBD.
![]()
Now, Horror Inc., or rather its VP, Robbie Barsamian, confirmed that the company is working on a new Friday the 13th game and movie, as well as that "most of [the company's] energy" is being poured into these projects (thanks Bloody Disgusting). So, instead of resurrecting a game owned by millions on gaming's biggest platform, organizing some relaunch event and providing a major update (which would cost next to nothing), Horror Inc. is creating an entirely new product in a genre that's long past its prime.
I mean, sure, DBD is still kicking, but that's a game that contains just about every single horror, especially slasher horror, villain ever made. It has so many of them that it's become an issue to find new ones, with BHVR often creating new original Survivors and Killers, or just taking Survivors from popular franchises like The Walking Dead, which do not have enough material for a feasible Killer.
But you know which franchise does have one? Friday the 13th, the series that never joined DBD in all these ten years. Not even after its game adaptation was shut down at the end of last year.
If this new Horror Inc. gaming endeavor is even remotely close to the quality of its last few Friday the 13th films, we're in for a complete wreck.
I just hope the same developers at IllFonic, who made both Friday the 13th: The Game and other game adaptations of popular horror franchises, return to spearhead this project. They've proven more than once that they're a capable team, but given Horror Inc.'s track record, I wouldn't hold my breath.

The big 2025 has been very generous to every sort of gamer out there, and its remaining few months are going to be even better. With some massive hits coming our way that could (and should) change their respective genres, we've compiled a list of what we're most excited for.
From AAA beasts to indie wonders, here's what the rest of this year of our Lord has in store for us.
Arc Raiders
![]()
Let's start off with what's probably my most highly anticipated game of this year. From what we've seen so far in beta tests and showcases, Arc Raiders is shaping up to be among the top shooters of all time, combining epic scale with tasty and precise gunplay.
Whether you're battling massive robotic beasts prowling the land (which, by the way, looks beyond amazing) or engaging other players in direct combat, Arc Raiders never relents and always keeps you on the edge. This is precisely what I've been hungering for, and what will justify the inclusion of the next entry on this list, also (hopefully) packed to the brim with near-constant action and tension.
Arc Raiders officially launches on Oct. 30, so it's not that far off.
Battlefield 6
![]()
Following Battlefield 2042, I thought EA would completely give up on the genre. However, they're rolling one last DICE to try and achieve something great with this series again. There's footage of the game's alpha tests out there, and from what I could gather, it's looking pretty solid. Lots of destructibility, Medics dragging players away to safety before healing them, guns and immersion are top-notch, etc.
How that will look in the official release is anyone's guess, but it seems EA is really trying to highlight the tension and grittiness of war, much like they did in Battlefield 1 and some other games in the franchise.
Battlefield 6 is supposedly aiming for a Fall release, somewhere on or around Oct. 10, which is much sooner than I anticipated.
Out of Action
![]()
Yes, yes, it's the third shooter on the list in a row, but hear me out. Out of Action is an indie gem in the making, combining a unique art style with the cyberpunk genre. It's a PVP first-person shooter that seems more than just another competitive title, which is exactly why I've included it on the list.
Its gameplay trailers on Steam show a mixture of Max Payne-style slo-mo action, lots of fast-paced combat, flashy graphics, and amazing gunplay. If it's as good as its promotional material claims it is, it's probably going to be among the most successful shooters of 2025. It also doesn't yet have an official release date, but it aims to launch by the end of the year.
Slay the Spire II
![]()
The sequel to 2019's indie hit is coming later this year. Slay the Spire II aims to build upon the first game's legacy and expand its recognizable deck-oriented systems and roguelike elements. All the bells and whistles you've gotten accustomed to in the first Slay the Spire are going to be in the second one, coming alongside a set of new enemies, stories, and challenges to overcome.
Much like Out of Action, Slay the Spire II does not have an official release date but is supposed to drop sometime later this year. That could be tomorrow or Dec. 31, it's anyone's guess.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2
![]()
Now, hear me out. This game has been stuck in development hell for years now, changing studios and developers out like socks. However, I remain somewhat optimistic, despite the not-so-great gameplay showcase we got earlier.
What I would love is for this game to live up at least somewhat to the original's quality. VTMB remains one of the best, if not the best, RPGs of all time, with writing that is out of this world, quite literally. Its characters, choices, and other RPG elements have withstood the test of time and are yet to be outmatched by the majority of modern RPG titles.
The genre in general is doing better than ever now, what with Baldur's Gate 3, Disco Elysium, and others dominating the market. VTMB 2 could count itself among the greats, and gamers only stand to gain if this game turns out to be fantastic and sells like hotcakes, as studios and publishers would be more inclined to create more story-oriented, proper RPGs.
VTMB 2 comes out sometime this year, if it's not delayed once more.
What's your most anticipated game for the remainder of this year? Any horror, shooter, or RPG in there? Let us know below.
