EA Sports FC is being mooted as the potential new name for FIFA, EA's football game juggernaut. As names go, it's fine, but it's a bit dull, no? It probably took some marketing execs a month to workshop, but it's about as generic as names get.
So, seeing as we want the best for EA's football series, we've put our heads together to come up with some new names for FIFA. Here are 42 new names. Do let us know which are your favourites.
That's it. I'm sure you'll agree that this was well worth your time (and ours) and that EA now has a tough decision to make.
Pokemon Go enthusiasts, it's time to get spooky: Niantic has detailed what you can expect from the game's now-classic Halloween event this year, when it kicks of later this week (on Friday, October 15).
Pokemon Go Halloween 2021 – which also goes by the name Halloween Mischief – will be split into two parts; Creepy Companions and Ghoulish Pals. Throughout the entire event (including both parts listed above), you will be able to get 2x Candy from transfers, catching and hatching. You'll also get guaranteed Candy XL when you're walking with your chosen buddy.
The coolest new mechanic that arrives with this Halloween update, though, relates to Pokemon sizes. Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist, which will arrive in time for the event, will evolve differently depending on the size of the creature you capture. The larger the Pumpkaboo, the larger the Gourgeist you can evolve it into.

New screen uses Pulse Width Modulation to control brightness.
Nintendo's latest iteration of the Switch launched on 8th October and while it's far from the long-rumoured 'Switch Pro', the new screen on the Switch OLED model is a beautiful thing and has led to the new Switch SKU receiving generally positive reviews. It doesn't hurt that incredible games like Metroid Dread and Tetris Effect: Connected launched alongside the console and really show off the contrast and rich colour of that lovely new OLED screen.
However, there's one relatively unreported issue that seems to be causing an issue for a minority of players: PWM flicker. It's to do with the way the new screen handles brightness via Pulse Width Modulation, and at lower brightness settings it can result in a flickering effect that a small number of players may be sensitive to.
The shiny new Switch OLED comes with its own dock, which is hiding a few upgrades of its own – including a chipset that can handle 4K / 60fps. It also has a revised design that sees the rear panel pop off when you're inserting things like HDMI cables, power leads and LAN cables.
As you can appreciate, anything that pops off of something is in danger of being lost, and Nintendo has already covered this eventuality by offering the rear panel of the dock separately.
Though it'll take a number of weeks for sales figures to come through globally, it would seem that Metroid Dread has started strongly, driven by an extensive marketing campaign from Nintendo and a lot of positive word-of-mouth online. UK sales have been some of the first to come through, and though it failed to get past multi-platform titles Far Cry 6 and FIFA 22, Dread's launch weekend more than likely made it the IP's best opening in the country when factoring in eShop downloads (at the time of writing it's number one in the UK and US eShop chart).
The series hasn't historically been one of Nintendo's most successful, with its influence and cultural impact outweighing actual sales, but perhaps Dread can turn that around thanks to a combination of its quality and arriving on the hugely popular Switch. Yet the sales data and where Metroid games 'stand' in the bigger picture is interesting, and a new report from GamesIndustry.biz (focused on the UK market) is a fascinating read from that perspective.
Update: Realtek chip inside dock advertised as "4K UHD multimedia SoC".
Update: We already know that the dock which comes with the Switch OLED is theoretically capable of outputting 4K / 60fps, but now KawlunDram has done some more digging and has discovered that the chip inside the dock is positioned as a "4K UHD multimedia SoC" by its manufacturer Realtek (thanks, VGC).
Apparently, the same chip was referenced in a Switch firmware update earlier this year, alongside the codename 'Aula'. KawlunDram also points out that the Tegra X1 SoC inside the Switch does actually support 4K 60fps output over HDMI 2.0 already, but there's currently nothing to suggest that Nintendo intends to add this option to the existing Switch hardware.
Hello all, How are you all going? I recently started gaming mainly using PC, slowly growing my Steam Library & so far have 100+ games. What made you decide to play on PC/using Steam for majority of your gaming time? My personal reasons were; had to purchase PC with good enough specs for video production/editing, ability to use multiple control schemes & price of games compared to console. It is also much easier for me to record gameplay, I recently started gaming channel on Youtube & steadily adding to my library of games especially during sales.
Now that the dust is settling on Amazon Games' New World, people's true feelings about the new PC game are coming to the fore. One more measurable metric of that sentiment is that New World's Steam reviews have now shifted from 'Mixed' to 'Mostly Positive'.
Some more recent reviews praise the PvP and the Runescape-like nature of the crafting and gathering gameplay loop. Some of them even compare New World as it is now to what World of Warcraft felt like in the early days. "This is the most immersive MMO I've played in years," one reviewer says. "Very Classic WoW vibe with OSRS skills. Level 29 as of 71 hours. Lots of drama in chat because the game is somewhat competitive, but PvP can be really fun. Really cool map and sound design. Some graphical/audio bugs every now and then. For the vanilla version of Amazon's flagship MMO, this is a good game. But it could be much better in time."
New World isn't entirely out of the woods yet, though. Some of the more negative reviews focus on what some players feel is a lack of story, a world lacking in excitement and soul, and a tedious levelling experience. "New World has some interesting ideas but overall feels shallow and soulless (yet somehow I'm still playing)", one reviewer concludes.
Palaces are a pretty key facet of Civilization 6, serving as your civilization's seat of government in the heart of its capital city. Curiously, though, some of the 4X game's civs share the same palace design as several others - for example, the Indians, Arabs, Persians, and Scythians share a Mughal architecture-style building reportedly inspired by Humayun's Tomb in Delhi, India. One fan, though, has now decided to give each of these civs' palaces more of their own distinct identity with some neat design concepts.
Civ 6 fan henrique3d has shared their designs on the strategy game's subreddit (below), explaining that they wanted to create some "unique designs" for the palaces that share their appearance across civs, such as those listed above, noting that "the architecture of those four civilizations is extremely diverse". The creator offers some details about the inspirations they took for each of their concepts, with Arabia's being the Medieval-era architecture of Egypt's capital, Cairo. Examples cited are the Cairo Citadel and Hassan Mosque.
For the Persian's palace, the creator took inspiration from "the Achaemenid architecture of Persia, under Cyrus the Great, such as the Apadana and the Gate of All Nations".
Intel's manufacturing and engineering departments are firing on all cylinders as the company prepares to launch its Alder Lake gaming CPUs in November, with its Arc graphics cards following sometime in 2022. In a recent interview with Gadgets 360, as highlighted by Videocardz, Intel's vice president and general manager, Roger Chandler, indirectly confirms that team blue's cards will not feature any form of mining limiter.
"As far as like software lockouts and things of that nature, we're not designing this product or building any features at this point that specifically target miners," Chandler says in response to whether Alchemist GPUs will feature mining limitations. "As far as actions we're taking to avoid or lock them out, it's a product that will be in the market and people will be able to buy it. It's not a priority for us"
Graphics cards are notoriously gutsy when it comes to power consumption, with the likes of Nvidia's RTX 3090 requiring 350W. Currently, delivering juice from PSUs to GPUs requires up to three 8-pin Molex connectors, resulting in cable management complications. Thankfully, it looks like Nvidia potentially has a solution to our socket woes, and it involves a brand new PCIe 5.0 power connector that's capable of delivering a whopping 600W to cards over a single cable.
As shared by Igor's Lab, the new PCIe 5.0 interface isn't too dissimilar to the plugs we currently use today. However, according to schematics, the new standard reportedly features 12 power pins alongside an additional four-pin array underneath for additional signals. Each pin on the block also delivers up to 55.2A over its pin configuration, with a maximum power load of 662.4W.
It's needless to say that this is a huge jump in potential power consumption, especially by current standards. While the green team next wave of graphics cards likely won't go the full hog when it comes to power bandwidth, rumours suggest the new RTX 3090 Ti (previously thought to be the RTX 3090 Super) could guzzle 450W.
When it comes to picking the best SMG in Warzone, there are so many candidates to pick from since the Cold War guns made their way to the battle royale game. Warzone Season 5 Reloaded introduced a number of slight tweaks to the SMGs, but nothing significant enough to push them out of the meta.
For the longest time in Warzone, SMGs weren't very popular as most players favoured assault rifles and the best Warzone guns like the AMAX. While the changes introduced in Season 4 Reloaded primarily affect assault rifles, the balance changes also targeted SMGs by reducing their damage output. These changes hit all of the popular SMGs, including the AK-74u, the Bullfrog, and even the Milano 821.
If you're looking for a long-range option to compliment some of your best Warzone loadouts then here's our guide to the best sniper in Warzone. However, when you reach the final circle or need to cross some close-quarters streets to reach the next zone you'll be grateful you have the best SMG in Warzone.
A big theme of Stardew Valley is rebuilding. You come to Pelican Town not just to fix up your grandfather's old farm, but to rebuild your life into something more fulfilling and meaningful. Stardew Valley is, however, more than five years old. While the game gets an update here and there to keep it fresh, we like to check out what the modding community is getting up to keep the game vibrant.
One of the more recent mods to capture our eye is xiddav's Little Red School House mod, which is also about rebuilding. This one adds an old, broken school to Pelican Town, which you can find near the playground. You'll need to take fixing it up into your own hands, though, by fulfilling the special orders board. You'll notice a woodpile near the ruined school, which is where you'll want to take the items needed for the special order.
Once the school is complete, it'll hum with life. Penny, Jas, and Vincent will attend, though you won't see Leo just yet. Xiddav explains that they haven't met Leo in-game yet, so they don't want to spoil anything for themselves, which is fair! Oh, and perhaps most importantly, there's a class hamster called Russel.
It's tricky to pick the best assault rifle in Warzone as it's the weapon class with the most options and the most variation between each pick. You've got fast-firing, highly mobile Warzone assault rifles like the FFAR 1 and Groza, all the way up to hard-hitting battle rifles like the Cold War AK47 or Oden. And there are even multiple ways to build each assault rifle in Warzone if you want to make the most out of the best Warzone loadouts.
We've already broken down the best SMG in Warzone and the best sniper in Warzone, so it's time to run through arguably the most widely used weapon type in Call of Duty's battle royale. Since Warzone Season 4, the devs made an effort to reduce the time-to-kill speed on numerous popular weapons. Assault rifles in particular were hit hard, decreasing the damage output on almost every popular weapon.
So, which of these Warzone guns is the best in its class? Naturally a huge part of this call comes down to personal preference, but there's no escaping the fact that some of the assault rifles in Warzone boast far superior DPS stats or better magazine sizes than others. Join us as we rank all of the best assault rifles in Warzone, starting with the pinnacle of the weapon type and working down to the weakest choice.
Want to know more about the Genshin Impact Gorou banner? The Genshin Impact 2.0 update introduced us to a wealth of new Genshin Impact characters hailing from Inazuma. Alongside Ayaka, Sayu, and Yoimiya, who were available on banners in 2.0, there are several other NPCs in Inazuma who we expect to become playable characters in the future.
Gorou is a member of the resistance movement that opposes the vision hunt, and has an easy going personality. In-game voice lines expand on Gorou's character further, with Kazuha, who was liberated by Gorou, saying that "he's the type of person who says whatever is on his mind. He shares the highs and lows of his subordinate and is never afraid to draw his sword for the sake of a friend".
He's also an anthropomorphic chap with fox ears and a tail, similar to Diona, but you may be wondering when Gorou's banner release date is and what star ranking he'll be. Read on to learn more about this newly datamined Genshin Impact character.
Last week, California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) filed an objection to an $18 million proposed settlement between Activision Blizzard and the USA's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), claiming it could harm their own lawsuit with the Call Of Duty and World Of Warcraft publishers. This objection might have an adverse affect on their legal battle however, because it revealed that two lawyers working on the DFEH suit had previously worked for the EEOC, specifically investigating Activision Blizzard.
Strange and wonderful detective RPG Disco Elysium launches on Xbox and Nintendo Switch today, which is good for them. And hey, it's good for PC peeps who haven't yet bought the game either, because it has a tidy 45% discount on Steam for the next week. Win-win-win.

The Lord of the Rings is easily the most influential text in the fantasy genre, inspiring countless imitators as well as a brilliant movie trilogy from Peter Jackson. It has also inspired a huge number of video games, though none of them has been quite like The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War. Developed […]
CGMagazine was fortunate enough to be invited to a digital preview of Solar Ash; as Creative + Design Director, Alx Preston walked us through a bit of the lead-up to release.
Developer Felix Laukel (Colmen's Quest) has announced Of Blades & Tails, a quite charming looking upcoming turn-based RPG in a world full of different animal tribes.
"A turn-based RPG that is action-oriented but rewards a thoughtful approach. Discover a fantastic land populated by different animal tribes. You play Riff, a clever member of the tribe of foxes. A chain of unfortunate events involves you in a quest of vital importance to all the peace-loving creatures of the realm. You will have to leave your home village and explore the world to become strong enough to stand up to evil. (In other words: There will be a storyline but it's still in the making!)"
The dev said they've been inspired by classic Hack & Slays like Diablo and turn-based RPGs like Rogue's Tale or Stoneshard. No permadeath in this one, so you can feel free to explore as much as you like. It's also developed with Godot Engine which is great to see more developers go for FOSS tools.
Another update to Proton Experimental has landed as of October 11 bringing with it more fixes and even more Windows games are now working on Linux.
Newly playable as of this update are GreedFall, Eve Online and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. Additionally there's a fix implemented for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare hanging on exit, the Paradox Launcher has improved "windowing", there's a fix for regressions from a previous release, crashes solved for older CPUs that lack the timestamp counter and crashes also fixed for some FNA/XNA games.
Need to know how to actually use Proton Experimental? Here's a simple HOWTO (as it's not complicated!). Make sure it's installed by searching for it in your Steam Library, then select it from the Compatibility menu in the Properties section of a game. See our quick video below:
For an explainer in text form:
Search for Proton Experimental and install if not already.
Right click any game on Steam and go to Properties.
Select the Compatibility menu on the right side.
Ensure the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" is ticked.
From the dropdown box that appears select Proton Experimental.
The Epic Games Store comes to the game manager Lutris, giving you an even better place to deal with your game library split across many different stores. On top of that it also supports Steam for Windows as a game source, for those titles you can't get working directly through Proton.
Now this means that Lutris can help you manage Epic Games Store, GOG, Humble Store, Steam (Linux/Windows), DOSBox, Emulators and more. Even more helpful is that Lutris games can be launched from Steam, you can disable 3rd party services you don't want, there's support now for DXVK-NVAPI and DLSS and VKD3D is now an option by itself.
Even more came with this release like the ability to use AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) with compatible versions of Wine, gamescope is an option, Esync was enabled by default, Dolphin was added as a game source, installers for GOG were improved, an improved monitor for your Steam games and much more.
Sounds like this is one of the biggest releases of the open source app yet.
Gonna keep this thread nice and cheery. What's one of the best things that's happened to you in recent times? For me, it's finally being able to say I own a house (sadly with a mortgage, but it's better than not owning one!) and being able to move in with my partner and start our life together. It's a great feeling although it's quite daunting at times I must admit!
What about you? What's the best thing to happen to you lately?
