One of Final Fantasy 7: Remake's earliest memes is now a mod

We're no stranger to videogames showing up late on PC due to exclusivity deals, but the highlight of their arrival is often the mods. The Final Fantasy 7 remake is proving no different as oodles of modders are getting busy improving the new PC game's performance, though one of the sillier mods to catch my eye brings an old meme to life.

It is, quite simply, Aerith with a chair. There's a scene earlier in the game where Tifa and Aerith team up to fight a gaggle of goons on their journey to save Cloud. Tifa dispatches a few with mixed martial arts - as she is wont to do - but Aerith tosses aside that healer malarkey she's often associated with and does her best WWE throwback by walloping someone with a chair - a real good smack on the noggin.

It inspired a host of reactions and memes on the internet, so now it's immortalised in a mod. Crandifff's Chaerith mod replaces all of Aerith's weapons with that very same chair. Now the fate of that one goon is the same of every thug in Midgar who earns Aerith's ire. Sometimes it's the simple mods that mean the most.

This Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion mod lets you take to Cyrodiil's skies in an airship

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion might be 15 years old, but the beloved RPG's modding scene is still going strong. While many mods are focussed on adding minor aesthetic and gameplay-related tweaks to the game, a recent community creation gives you the opportunity to explore Cyrodiil in a whole new way - that is, by airship.

'Airboat' might be the better description for Chambcra's new Oblivion mod. The contraption sees a basket in the shape of a Viking-style vessel (with curled edges somewhat reminiscent of the famous Oseberg ship) hoisted into the air by a huge fibrous balloon. Sure, it might look a wee bit out of place in Cyrodiil's normally non-aircraft filled skies, but it seems like a wonderful way to take in all the magnificent views.

The way it works is by using a summoning spell to, well, summon it, and you simply 'activate' it to hop on in. You can then control its direction, height, and speed (there are seven different options for the latter) using designated keys. Best of all, you can get stuck into ranged and spell-based combat while floating above Tamriel - you'll just need to make sure the airship is stopped at the time.

What if: the biggest games of 2021 had Christmas spin-offs?

Goodness gracious, doesn't time fly? It's Christmas! That day when people give each other gifts, scoff way too much food in one sitting, and nap in front of a cosy fire or sun themselves on the beach, depending on which hemisphere they live in. Many games celebrate Christmas by having winter-themed events, such as Fortnite's Winterfest (complete with Fortnite presents you can open up right now), Destiny 2's Dawning, and Call of Duty: Warzone's 'festive fervour'. Even newcomers such as Halo Infinite are getting in on the holiday havoc with its Winter Contingency event.

Wholesome as it all is, we still yearn for the halcyon days when developers themed entire games for the holiday season. Among the best-known examples is Christmas Lemmings - a set of special holiday-themed levels which saw the green-haired critters sporting dashing Santa hats. This kind of spin-off is distinct from games based on real Christmas from the ground up, which also exist and are mostly rather trite (but not the best Christmas games, of course).

Last year, we put a list together of Christmas 2020 spin-off games, complete with some cursed photoshop edits. It was so much fun popping a KFC bucket in Cyberpunk 2077 and an Among Us bean-person into Die Hard that I thought of some holiday-themed candidates for 2021's releases. It's also perfect speculative fodder for our regular feature series, What If, which we started this year.

Every year our clone forms degrade, and Katharine spends the winter break copying each consciousness into a new body. Don't worry: we can't feel a thing! Since our new forms are still coming online from their time spent in the primordial flesh soup vat of the RPS Treehouse, we can't post over Christmas, so we've prepared some Christmas Cracker jokes instead! You can help fund the research into longer-lasting clone bodies with the RPS supporter program.

Now to enjoy your nice joke!

Q: What did Santa say to the elf struggling to pick up a heavy present?
