We're in the final days of 2024, a chance to look back and assess the year that was. And, importantly, how did Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo navigate this awkward period in which all of their…

Ironically, my love for The Sims 4 is dying after its Life and Death expansion

2024 was an eventful year for The Sims 4, if only because we got confirmation that The Sims 5 isn't coming. Instead, we've been promised a perpetual, live-service-esque version of the game we've known and loved for a decade. This year, we also got a new death-themed expansion, which is ironic seeing as all this live service stuff is killing my love for the game.

Stalker 2 is a more convincing and complex survival game than any Fallout

Every time Skif, Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl's protagonist, meets his end, a menu screen pops up that displays a personal death count. By the time the player's a dozen or so hours into the game, it isn't unusual for this number to approach the triple digits. This is because the world of Stalker - an alternate history portrayal of the nuclear Exclusion Zone in Chornobyl, Ukraine - is harsh. A bullet will take Skif down very quickly, but he is also easily killed by standing anywhere near an exploding grenade, receiving the brunt of a surprise charge from a mutant boar, or wandering into an invisible pocket of gravity-warping air.

Carbonflesh is a cyberpunk life game blending endless genres and ideas

I wasn't sure what to expect from Carbonflesh. Members of its creative team were involved in several of my favorite point-and-click games, including Primordia and The Excavation of Hob's Barrow, both of which offer a depth of literacy and creativity that seeps out of every pore, with their puzzle elements soon giving way to impossibly vast worlds packed with lore and history. These are worlds often just outside your reach, but you can still sense them. They're tantalizing, yet surplus to the games themselves. This is what I wanted from Carbonflesh, and I wasn't disappointed.

Soulframe has a case of confused identity, and it's holding it back

When you ask Morrigan her name at the start of Dragon Age: Origins, she retorts with "names are pretty, but useless." It's a statement that's sat with me for a long time. What truly is in a name? For some, it's an identity; for others, it's a prison - a reminder of what they're not. In videogames, it's often make or break: if your game doesn't sound cool, people won't want to buy it. Naming a game is equal parts a brand exercise and an expression of passion, and as someone whose gamertag is 'Morri', it's not a task I envy. Digital Extremes' upcoming RPG Soulframe suffers from a confused identity that all comes back to - you guessed it - its name. After plowing hours into its Preludes pre-alpha tests, I can say the title simply doesn't fit the game, and I worry it'll suffer for it.

I'm a sucker for a good first-person runabout. I don't need to shoot, but it's sometimes nice to get a sword, or a big whip. As long as I get to be immersed in an adventure. I think that's the big theme of my selection box: being grounded within my player character. I want to feel what it's like to hike through canyons with too much sellable loot in my backpack. I want to park my soul in the head of a scared Scotsman way out of his depth, hundreds of miles from shore. The closer I can comfortably fit in my character's shoes, the more I seem to buy into the world they inhabit. Even if that world is constantly glowing a magnificent crimson.

The fell moons rise, and in their cold glare emerges a parcel from the dirt. Bloat and gangrene, crimped as if by tourniquet. A dark promise wriggles within. Grip the fibrous handles, feel its jagged soul imprint upon your palm. Now pull! Rend the sinew, tear muscle from bone, hatch their fetid gift! The yoke draws near! Take up the slip and read the words upon its face.

Time to enjoy your lovely joke!

Q: What's the best news you can hear after a trip to the vet?

Jeff in his Winter Splash suit in Marvel Rivals

Jeff the Landshark is a divisive character among Marvel Rivals players. Some (like myself) believe him to be one of the most incredible things ever conceived, while others consider him an abhorrent affront to humanity. Whatever your opinions on the little guy, it's undeniable that his limited-time Winter Celebration mode is an absolute blast.

In Jeff's Winter Splash Festival, two teams of four Jeffs go fin-to-fin to blanket Yggsgard's Bifrost Garden in as much snow as possible. With a frosty beam replacing his regular primary fire, it's a battle to cover the most ground by the end of the three-minute timer. Jeff can still use his other abilities, allowing you to KO enemies, but his healing bubble becomes a grenade that coats the area. From diving underground to the vibrant colors, it's unapologetically Splatoon with sharks, and I love it.

If the concept alone wasn't enough, playing the mode enough earns you Jeff's adorable snow outfit for free. By completing specific challenges, you receive "Frost," used to purchase decorations for your in-game Christmas postcard. Gold Frost adds major decorations, while Silver Frost is used to customize each section to make your ideal card. The more decorations you buy, the more Holiday-themed goodies you earn. From an MVP animation to an emote and, of course, the Cuddly Fuzzlefin skin for Jeff.

Is Jeff's Winter Splash Festival a mode that completely revolutionizes Marvel Rivals? Not quite, but it does serve as a fun break from the chaos of regular matches. Unless you're seeking a break because you've been thrown off the map by Jeff more times than you can count. That happens a lot in this mode. However, the time it takes them to chomp you up and launch you can actually put them at a disadvantage. As simple as the mode is, it's enough to scratch that periodic Splatoon itch without dusting off the Switch. I mean that literally, as my yearly Switch recap shows I've only touched that console for four hours this year.

Marvel Rivals' first event has not only sparked hope for the game's future but also raised the bar for competition. Established live service titles have become a little too comfortable with recycling specific events with mediocre rewards in recent years. While we don't know for sure that it was the influence of Rivals, Overwatch 2 recently stepped up its game. Right now, players can earn three brand-new skins for free. Considering that the original trailer showcased these as shop skins, it's possible our little Landshark friend may have had something to do with it.

It goes without saying that Marvel Rivals has the benefit of being brand-new. Because of that novelty, every event will be fresh and exciting for the foreseeable future. But there are only so many times that I can play Mei's Snowball Offensive in Overwatch, bake the same cookies in Destiny 2, or rescue Metzen in World of Warcraft. It's lovely to have something new to enjoy this year, and it excites me to see Marvel Rivals potentially light a fire under its competition and benefit both itself and the games we love. Only time will tell if NetEase will keep up this momentum, but let's hope they do.

Marvel Rivals and its Winter Celebration event is free to play on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
