The best multiplayer games to play with friends 2025

What are the best multiplayer games? Intricate gameplay and glistening visuals only go so far; humans often provide the biggest surprises with schemes that transform even the most average game into an unforgettable experience you'll be talking about until the end of time.

Fast and frantic or tense and calculated, the best multiplayer games come in all shapes and sizes. Whether it's vying for control of the payload in an FPS game or fighting for survival in a co-op game with your friends, these experiences wouldn't be the same without a bunch of real people. We've curated a list of the best PC games with multiplayer functionality so you can go around killing, maiming, or, occasionally, helping random people on the internet.

South of Midnight is special, heart-wrenching, and overly familiar all at once

Ever since I was a little girl, I've been fascinated by fictional representations of the bayou. Whether it's my teenage obsession with The CW's Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals or my interest in the occult, to me, the swamp represents nature at its most powerful; if magic exists, the bayou would be its beating heart. South of Midnight, then, is outwardly perfect for me; a feeling compounded by the fact it hails from Compulsion Games, the creator of We Happy Few, one of my personal favorites. I've gone to bat over it many times, and while I acknowledge that it's janky and very much not what we expected it to be, it remains a unique, mind-bending acid trip that I often return to. Despite their very different settings and genres, South of Midnight may end up being just as divisive, but its living world, strong characterization, and heart-wrenching story could still make up for its jank and familiar action.

You can try space MMO Eve Frontier with a new free trial, for a limited time

Eve Online developer CCP Games has announced a ten-day trial for Eve Frontier, the survival spinoff of the 20-year-old space MMO. Players interested in Frontier can register for access to the game's closed alpha, as CCP Games keeps working toward a full launch. When Eve Frontier launches it'll be free-to-play, with an optional subscription. Until now, however, you've only been able to sample it outside of a trial if you purchase a Founder's Pack. Partly, that's why this new free trial is distinctive.      If you're expecting Elden Ring Nightreign beta codes, FromSoftware has news

Between GTA 6, Doom The Dark Ages, and Monster Hunter Wilds, there's a lot to look forward to in 2025. But for the moment, the Elden Ring Nightreign beta has our collective attention. Largely, I feel like it's because the premise is still a little mysterious. We know it's got a roguelike structure. We know that you play Nightreign in teams of four. But having spent the last 16 years perfecting the brutally hard, soulslike formula, the new Elden Ring game is an intriguing twist in direction by FromSoftware. The beta starts soon and thousands if not millions of people are lined up to try the RPG spin-off. If you bagged an invite, From has good news.

Monster Hunter Wilds' opening hours solve the biggest frustrations from World

I recently played through the opening hours of Monster Hunter Wilds and came away reassured. I was reserved about the upcoming RPG after a wobbly beta test with weapons that at times felt a little anemic, even though I had come to enjoy tackling the fight against Rey Dau. While my performance concerns aren't fully allayed, the preview build I saw left me desperate to keep playing. Even more pleasingly, it showed that Capcom has answers to some of the community's biggest frustrations coming off its breakout success with Monster Hunter World, from overwhelming tutorials to monster diversity.

Best Valorant settings for max fps

What are the best Valorant settings for PC? Applying the best Valorant settings and boosting your frame rate can significantly improve your chances of successfully making those game-changing plays, and climbing up the game's ranks. However, reducing your gaming PC's system latency is just as important as having a higher frame rate, and we're here to help you do both.

There's more nuance to finding the best Valorant settings than simply whacking the game's various graphics options as low as possible and calling it a day, even if the Valorant system requirements are low. In fact, doing just that may inhibit your ability to read the game's environments thanks to murky textures and distractingly blurred edges, even if you have the best graphics card.

With that in mind, we've put together the best Valorant settings that prioritize frames per second without sacrificing the look of the game's visuals too much. Unfortunately, neither AMD FSR, Nvidia DLSS, nor Intel XeSS makes an appearance in the options menu, but Nvidia Reflex is available and can lower your system latency if you're running a Nvidia GeForce GTX 900 series graphics card or newer.

It is I, the guy who has only played Mechabellum playing his second autobattler, and getting strong Mechabellum vibes from it. Except, actually no, not at all. He Is Coming, from Chronocle and noted good game recognisers Hooded Horse, is actually a kinda sorta classic roguelike RPG. You'll be shuffling over a Commodore 64-tified overworld map, grabbing treasure, bumping foes that move when you do, and turn-based autobattling them.

Got wounded? Maybe have a nice rest at that campfire. Not too long, you slovenly wastrel! The next new Honkai: Star Rail playable character will be Castorice, adding another Amphoreus unit to the roster.

Castorice appeared as a supporting cast member in the Honkai: Star Rail Amphoreus Trailblaze Mission storyline, and it turns out she'll be a playable character after the 3.2 update. HoYoVerse shared her splash art and also revealed the Path she'll walk and element she uses.

When we first meet Castorice in Honkai: Star Rail, it's a rather interesting experience. She guides us through a particularly hazardous area, at a distance. This new teaser confirms she will be a five-star unit. When she attacks, she'll deal Quantum damage to enemies. Finally, she will be a Remembrance character just like Aglaea and the new Trailblazer variant added in 3.0.

The next two playable characters we'll see in Honkai: Star Rail will be Mydei and Tribbie (Tribios). Both were teased for 3.1 after HoYoverse announced the 3.0 Special Program. They also debuted in the 3.0 Trailblaze Mission alongside Castorice. We'll see how both fight for the first time during the showcase at 3:30am PT/6:30am ET on February 14, 2025.

The first Amphoreus debut is Aglaea. She's a Remembrance character who is a focus five-star until February 25, 2025. This means when Castorice debuts in Honkai: Star Rail, she'll be the fourth playable Amphoreus character in the game.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Special Program for 3.1 airs at 3:30am PT/6:30am ET on February 14, 2025. 3.1 is expected to launch on February 26, 2025, and we aren't sure when 3.2 will arrive yet.

Former Genshin Impact KFC Glider Available via Razer Gold Cosmetic Wind Glider

HoYoVerse announced another way to get the Genshin Impact Wings of Delicacies Wind Glider cosmetic item, which originally debuted at KFC in China, will now be distributed via Razer Gold. The official site doesn't show it or details about how to claim it yet, but the promotion starts on February 12, 2025. It will then run through March 25, 2025.

Here's how it will work this time. Someone would need to use their Razer Gold digital wallet to make a purchase for Genshin Impact. When they would, they would get the promotional items. The Wings of Delicacies are mentioned and shown there. However, the image in the ad also showed Mora currency, the Selva Salad that is a World Quest reward, and the Minty Fruit Tea recipe originally given out via an in-game letter in our mailboxes in April 2023.

The Genshin Impact Wings of Delicacies we'll get via Razer Gold didn't just appear via KFC in China, as the Wind Glider cosmetic showed up as a reward at multiple restaurants and stores ahead of this release. It also ended up being doled out during a Japanese KFC promotion, which starred a special take on Colonel Sanders, and a US event with McDonald's.

In the meantime, there's another Razer Gold event tied to the game just ending. The 5.3 Phase 2 offer provided 10% Bonus Gold until February 11, 2025. That only applied if you bought, at the very minimum, a 980 + 110 Genesis Crystals bundle. When you'd check out, you'd need to use the AC10 coupon.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and mobile devices, and the Wings of Delicacies Wind Glider cosmetic shows up via Razer Gold on February 12, 2025.

February 2025 State of Play Covers New PS5 Games Tomorrow Amazon Listing for PS5 Pro Pre-orders Goes Live

Sony decided its Valentine's Day gift to people is a February 2025 State of Play going over new PS5 games on February 12, 2025. It will air at 2pm PT/5pm ET and only focus on titles for the platform. As usual, it will be on Twitch and YouTube

There's no placeholder YouTube video for the showcase yet. However, we do know a little bit about what will come up during this first State of Play of 2025 on February 12, 2025. It will be about new PS5 games, naturally. It will also last over 40 minutes. There's no exact time, but make sure you leave room for it. Co-streaming is allowed. However, there will be some licensed material and Sony stated that video on demand showings after the event may need to be edited to avoid possible copyright strikes on sites like YouTube.

It's been quite some time since we saw a State of Play. The last one was held in September 2024. That covered games heading out at the end of 2024, with some of the featured games being Dynasty Warriors Origins, Fantasian Neo Dimension, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Ghost of Yotei

The new Sony State of Play will air at 2pm PT/5pm ET on February 12, 2025, and it will go over PS5 games coming up this year.

life-sized pokemon ekans serperior plushes

Life-sized plushes of Ekans and Serperior from Pokemon will appear in China, with no news yet for a release outside of the region. These plushes are to commemorate 2025, the Year of the Snake. [Thanks, Pokejungle!]

The life-sized Pokemon plushes are 2.0 m (Ekans) and 3.3 m (Serperior), respectively. You can pose them so they're curled with their heads raised, looking much like their art from the games or show. This can also help to conserve space, or fit them in smaller rooms if you don't want them to take up an entire 2.0 m or 3.3 m.

While many snake-like Pokemon have appeared in the games over the years, Ekans and Serperior are some of the more popular ones compared to species like Seviper. In Ekans' case, this is because Jessie of Team Rocket debuted with this Pokemon in the anime. Meanwhile, Serperior is the final evolution of Snivy, which was a starter Pokemon in Black/White.

The life-sized Ekans and Serperior Pokemon plushes will come out in China's Pokemon Center. Time will tell if they will show up in regions outside of it. If you want a life-sized Pokemon plush and aren't picky about the species, the Pokemon Center also recently released a Gardevoir doll.

Review: While Waiting Can Be Brilliant and Baffling game

I love the concept behind While Waiting and the message the game conveys, but boy does it frustrate me sometimes. Like games such as Unpacking, it is something of a series of puzzles that happen as you get to see someone's life go by. It's a fascinating window into everyday experiences and how we time can pass and potentially meaningful things happen while you're anticipating something else. But boy, is it a pain in some cases.

Our While Waiting hero doesn't have a name, so let's go ahead and call the game's lead character joe. Things begin with his soul waiting in line to descend to Earth. From there, we watch as he waits for things like fireworks to go off, traffic to move, graded papers to be handed out, a flight to finish, a bathroom stall to open, commercials to finish, and other daily mundane and notable activities to happen. In the meantime, you can engage with various fidget toys with the tap of one button, interact with some elements of the environment to experience additional scenes or play minigames, and… wait. Each of the 100 levels takes a few minutes, so it's never too pressing. And in the majority of the cases with very few exceptions, you have no control over whether or not a level ends. Eventually, it will. as time goes by.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK7tQA_pAlI&ab_channel=Optillusion

Like Unpacking, this means witnessing what happens in Joe's life as you do. He spends time as a kid. His BFF is a stuffed bear. He finds his first love. He befriends his college roommate and gets into shenanigans with him. He deals with adult problems like car trouble and employment issues. While none of your actions influence the story and basically just determine if you unlock certain challenges to earn Stickers showing you did a thing, I also liked how we could sort of determine what "kind" of person Joe is as we play. Does he think of others and bring ice cream to overheated individuals? Does he keep getting in between two kids on a "date" trying to enjoy a fireworks show like a jerk? It's a novelty. And since there are so many challenges and in some cases getting one locks you out of another, it adds lots of replay value.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the number of minigames that Optillusion packed into While Waiting that reference other games. For example, you can play single-player Tetris. There's a take on Desert Bus. A Flappy Bird clone is here. Likewise, there are some levels with genuinely challenging puzzles or adventure game mechanics. It's more creative than I expected it to be. I don't want to spoil it, but one incident on the Switch left me taking notes because of what happened, only for me to abandon them when I returned to the game to see what the developer did there.

However, as clever as While Waiting can be, the game also drove me nuts sometimes. Most levels had at least one objective, if not more, that are incredibly obtuse and difficult to trigger. Sometimes, this involved finicky situations that didn't allow me the precision needed to get through on the Switch. Other times, it seemed like it was just designed poorly. (I still haven't figured out how to scan the pizza box at the grocery store!) There is one puzzles where, because of the hitbox detection not being completely clear, I found it easy to unintentionally mess up and fail. In one puzzle in a bathroom, it's pretty much impossible to get a certain task done because time isn't on your side. I needed to keep restarting after working out important parts to do it. There are also times when it isn't clear what you can and can't interact with as well.

I appreciate the concept of While Waiting, as the game pairs short activities, amusements, and minigames while telling someone's life story. The design choices lend a lot of replayability, as well as freedom when responding to situations. However, there are some thing feel a bit too finicky due to controls or execution. So for every really fun three levels, you'll probably be faced with a situation in which certain objectives seem totally befuddling or even impossible.

While Waiting is on the Nintendo Switch, and you can also find the game on Steam for PCs

Character Gift Boxes in Hello Kitty Island Adventure

One of the main parts of Hello Kitty Island Adventure is deepening your connections and friendships with the many Sanrio characters who inhabit Friendship Island alongside you. These friendships unlock quests and reward rare resources, but what happens when you become Best Friends?

Becoming Best Friends with a character happens when you reach maximum friendship with them. This could be at level 15, 20, or 25, depending on the character. Once you reach this point, they'll stop giving you their basic resource return gifts and start giving Character Gift Boxes instead.

If you're working your way up to Best Friends with any of the characters, we have a useful gift guide that can take you through the entire process.

What are Character Gift Boxes in Hello Kitty Island Adventure

Wish me mell in Hello Kitty Island Adventure
Screenshot by Destructoid

Character Gift Boxes are, essentially, a lucky dip with rewards on offer specific to each character. While it is entirely possible that you could get their usual resource offering, you could potentially get a rare item instead.

There are three different sizes of Gift Boxes for each character. Which box you'll be given directly corresponds to how many hearts the gift you gave has:

  • Small - Any one-heart gift
  • Medium - Any two-heart gift
  • Regular - Any three-heart gift

Once you receive a Character Gift Box of any size, it must be opened from within your inventory before you receive the rewards inside.

How to get Character Hats in Hello Kitty Island Adventure

One of the main reasons to keep gifting characters three heart gifts after they've become your Best Friend is to get the individual Character Collectors Hats. The only way to get these is through Regular-sized Character Gift Boxes.

It's entirely down to chance and RNG whether you get a Character Hat from any of the Regular Gift Boxes, but there is a failsafe in place. If you get unlucky and open 100 Character Boxes from a single character without receiving their hat, you're guaranteed to get it in the 101st box.

All Character Gift Box rewards in Hello Kitty Island Adventure

Each larger box will always have a chance to yield the items from the smaller version of it. For example, a Small Hello Kitty Gift Box can only possibly reward Tofu or Sand Dollars, the Medium adds three different Dyes into the mix, while the Regular size box only adds the Collector's Hat.

As such, I'm only going to note items that are unique to the larger-sized Gift Boxes. Remember that a Regular Gift Box can possibly reward items included in the Small Gift Box column.

A Game About Digging a Hole

Digging is hard, dirty, and tiring work, yet over the last couple of days, I've found myself doing just that. Virtually, that is. What's weirder is that I've found it thoroughly enjoyable, and I don't even have a no-good, pig-stealing, great-great grandfather who cursed my life to get me here.

Yes, that's a reference to Louis Sachar's Holes, because the book has been freshly brought to mind in light of A Game About Digging a Hole, which lets you live out your childhood inner demon's deepest desire, and absolutely destroy the back garden of a house while looking for treasure.

Since this bizarre little game was released on February 7, I've been channeling my inner Stanley Yelnats and getting to grips with the mechanics involved in digging a hole. The process is a lot more complicated than I ever imagined as a child.

Looking up out of the hole in A Game About Digging a Hole
Screenshot by Destructoid

I suppose my first clue should have been the note on the box for my shovel, which warns that it explodes when the battery is empty, but it actually came when I saw that I had a health bar. The aim of this game is to dig a hole, or so I naively thought. So why do I need a health bar, exploding shovels aside?

Well, you lose health if you fall too fast down the hole, which is near enough impossible to avoid once you've dug down deep enough unless you happen to be really good with a jet pack. If this game has taught me one thing, it's that I should never be allowed anywhere near a jet pack, because I am clearly a menace.

While you dig, you collect ores to sell. With the money you make from selling these ores, you can upgrade your shovel, inventory, battery life, and your jet pack. Ores found deeper within the hole are worth more money, but upgrades and battery maintenance get more expensive as you progress, so there's a surprising amount of money juggling in A Game About Digging a Hole

Upgrades in A Game About Digging a Hole
Screenshot by Destructoid

Once you've dug deep enough, you fall into an endless warren of tunnels and darkness. I've never been claustrophobic, but A Game About Digging a Hole has a way of instilling a sense of panic down in the tunnels. Especially when your battery is low and your inventory is full.

Even in a virtual world, not knowing which way is up and being stuck in the dark is a shockingly scary experience. Your jet pack uses the same battery as your shovel, so if you're down there and haven't made yourself an escape route or kept an eye on your entry point, you're at risk of exploding as soon as you press the space bar.

At one point, I gave up exploring and instead started digging up the entire garden, just so I'd be able to see daylight while down in the hole. I figured I would have some kind of indication as to whether I was upright or sideways then. It's an incredibly disorienting experience. Even when you get something that says up and down, it's only telling you where you should go, not where you're actually facing.

Secrets in the hole in A Game About Digging a Hole
Screenshot by Destructoid

There are creatures in the depths of your hole, as well, and they're more daunting than any Yellow Spotted Lizard. Three moles are out to get you and prevent you from getting to the treasure buried deep, and they are scary when you encounter them.

I still haven't managed to finish the game. There's a chest in the garage that remains annoyingly locked because I've only managed to find one key, and I have absolutely no idea where the capability of hole digging ends, because I've yet to reach the bottom.

One thing's for sure, though. I'm going to find out what's inside the chest, and I'm going to keep digging until I can't dig any more. My garden may be destroyed, and my shovel might be rigged to explode, but my curiosity is piqued.

A few characters without faces from DBOG are looking at the screen

If you've just started out your Dragon Ball Online Generations (DBOG) journey, you may become overwhelmed knowing that you'll need to level up all the way to level 700. As you can imagine, this is no walk in the park, and just like Goku, you're going to have to train really hard to achieve such a high (power) level. Thankfully, there are ways you can speed up this process, and we're going to tell you how.

Leveling up fast in DBOG

There are actually quite a few methods for leveling up fast in DBOG, and we're going to list our favorites from least effective to most effective. However, we recommend you try all of them and see which one works best for you. Some methods are grindy, some are slower but more fun, some require you to spend some Robux, and some of them require the help of friends and strangers.

Finishing all the Story Quests

A DBOG player is standing in front of General Red, about to start the first Story Quest
Screenshot by Destructoid

This is probably the least effective way, but it's also in your best interests to do all the Story Quests. If you only focus on the Story Quests (and nothing else), you should be around level 80-90 by the time you finish the last one. While that doesn't sound effective, it's still a good idea to do the whole thing because you'll unlock everything else the game has to offer (including other training methods). So, even if it's annoying, just tough it out and finish the Story Quest so you can move on to more effective leveling methods.

Gravity Room & 2x XP combo

A DBOG player is standing in front of the gravity room which is used for leveling up

If you have Robux to burn and you really want to level up fast, this is the way. First, you visit the Capsule Corp backyard and look for the Gravity Room. Buy the Gamepass to access it. While this is already great for fast leveling if you want to really boost that leveling, use an XP code or buy an XP boost. Afterward, simply use the Gravity Room and watch those levels go up. It's almost like cheating, but the game offers this, so it's not against the rules. One thing we don't like about this method is that players who use it, tend not to learn how to properly play the game because they don't get enough practice with it.

Doing Dailies

Once you complete the Story Quest, you should start doing Dailies. Now, we're not going to lie; Daily Quests can get boring after a while, but they are nonetheless great sources of XP. At the same time, doing Dailies every day is great if you combine it with the next method.

Collecting all Dragon Balls

A player is flying around the eternal dragon Shenron from DBOG

If you collect all Dragon Balls, you can wish to become stronger, which will give you a bunch of levels just like that. While it would be nice for Shenron to simply boost you to max level, remember that even eternal dragons have their limits. Just like in the early Dragon Ball episodes, collecting Dragon Balls can be quite difficult, and you will have competition. Our advice is to not stress about it and just use your Dragon Radar and collect one Dragon Ball each week. Seriously, don't make this a priority because it's just not worth it.

Asking for help from a Friend / Stranger

Dragon Ball Online Generations has been active since 2019, meaning there are a lot of veteran players who are just chilling at their max level and doing their own thing. Unfortunately, while the game is active, it isn't as popular as some of the other Roblox titles. Because of this, the community is really friendly and welcoming to new players. If you have a friend who has a max-level character, ask them for a boost. If you don't have friends who play DBOG, that's not a problem either.

Simply visit the official DBOG Discord server, say you are new, and ask if anyone is willing to help you level. Most of the time, you'll get a response right away. It's actually quite amazing how friendly the community is. One of the best ways you can level is by starting a hard Quest (like the Cooler fight) and having the high-level friend beat him for you. You can also get someone to boost you through a raid. Either way, this is, BY FAR, the best way to level up fast in DBOG.

There you have it. While it may be against the spirit of Dragon Ball, you can use some of these shortcuts to level up fast and become more powerful. If you need a boost, check out our Dragon Ball Online Generations codes.

Snorlax and Jigglypuff in Pokémon Sleep

Pokémon Sleep features a quirky way to catch Pokémon, and it all revolves around two things: how well you sleep (which means I've never done particularly well) and your ability to boost Snorlax's Drowsy Power.

Every week, a fresh new Snorlax will appear, giving you the chance to boost its Drowsy Power with recipes that can be cooked up and fed to it at regular intervals throughout the day. Increasing this Drowsy Power (and cultivating good sleeping habits) is definitely worth it, because the higher the power, the more Pokémon will be drawn in for you to capture and befriend, including some rare ones with potentially new Sleep Styles.

There are a huge variety of different Recipes to cook in Pokémon Sleep. Here's how to unlock the ability to cook, and every Recipe you can eventually put together.

How to cook in Pokémon Sleep

Cooking in Pokémon Sleep
Screenshot by Destructoid

Until you've unlocked 12 unique different Sleep Styles, you'll only be able to poke Snorlax and select the "Auto Cook" function. However, after witnessing 12 Sleep Styles, you'll be able to start using a variety of ingredients to cook specific dishes.

You can cook at any time by simply tapping on Snorlax, which will open up the Cooking Pot. Here, you can either Auto Cook or cook specific recipes. It's worth always making specific recipes that suit your current Snorlax's taste, which are different every week.

There are also possible boosts on offer whenever you cook, and you always have a chance to create something known as an "Extra Tasty" meal. From Monday to Saturday, there is a 10% chance that any meal could be Extra Tasty, while on Sunday this chance is boosted to 30%.

As you begin to find more unique Sleep Styles, you'll be able to upgrade your Cooking Pot. This will enable you to use more ingredients, which can then be used to create recipes with a higher base strength. All of these upgrades cost Sleep Shards, and certain upgrades can only be unlocked after finding a certain number of Sleep Styles.

Here are all of the Cooking Pot upgrades in Pokémon Sleep:

Cooking pot level Ingredients Dream Shard cost Sleep Styles needed
1 15 0
2 18 1,200 35
3 21 2,700
4 24 4,100 70
5 27 6,600 -
6 30 8,600 110
7 33 13,300 -
8 36 15,300 150
9 39 15,700 -
10 42 18,100 190
11 45 22,000 -
12 48 38,000 240
13 51 59,000 -
14 54 89,000 290
15 57 127,000 -
16 60 190,000 340
17 63 260,000 -
18 66 340,000 390
19 69 440,000 -

You can also use a Good Camp Ticket to increase the number of ingredients that can be used in the Cooking Pot by 50%, allowing you to cook certain recipes that require more than the base number for each level.

When to feed Snorlax in Pokémon Sleep

Snorlax with a meal in Pokémon Sleep
Screenshot by Destructoid

Snorlax is a big ol' hungry Pokémon, and seeing as your progress pretty much depends on its satisfaction, you'll need to know when to feed it.

Once you've figured out what your Snorlax of the week wants, here's when you'll need to check back in and give it another meal:

  • Breakfast (8 a.m. - 12 p.m.)
  • Lunch (12 p.m. - 6 p.m.)
  • Dinner (6 p.m. - 6 a.m.)

Outside of these three main meals, you can also regularly feed Snorlax with Berries that your Helper Pokémon has discovered. This won't give much of a boost to Snorlax's Drowsy Power, but every little helps.

Best Fantasy audiobooks title image

Whenever people tell me, "I wish I had time to read more books!" I always ask, "Have you thought about getting into audiobooks?" I'm always looking for an excuse to throw on my headphones and listen to a good audiobook; more often than not, it's a fantasy audiobook.

Fantasy is about losing yourself in a world that doesn't play by the same dull rules as ours. By adding a layer of sound to the reading experience, a fantasy audiobook can turn the people and places we're reading about into breathing, moving pictures that play out in the mind like a film beamed onto a diamond screen.

If you're looking for something to keep your brain moving while cooking, going out on a walk, or killing time at the airport (that isn't another playlist of trivial videos on YouTube), here are the top ten best fantasy audiobooks.

10. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Image via Audible

Every fantasy setting, even the one clinging to the back of a Kaiju-sized turtle swimming through space, has a criminal underbelly. Most fantasy novels frame their world's criminal element as a collective of clear-cut villains destined to be bested by heroic knights, wise wizards, and the odd kid from the "normal world." Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows takes this tradition and gives it a good flogging in the public square.

Set in the same universe as Bardugo's Shadow and Bone trilogy, Six of Crows' is a caper book where magic fits into the same tool kit as lock picks, crowbars, and firearms. Narrated by seven talented readers, the Six of Crows audiobook fools you into thinking you're listening to an old-school radio serial, amplifying the suspense slithering through every scene.

9. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Image via Audible

Who doesn't love the circus? Even if the real three-ring extravaganza stopping in town falls short of expectations, the idealized image of the world under tarpaulin lives rent-free in most people's brains. That a book like The Night Circus exists is proof of this, as is the quality of its audiobook.

The Night Circus audiobook is a show that will keep your headphones glued to your head for hours. The velvety voice of Jim Dale, the same reader who lent his voice to the Harry Potter audiobooks, tells the rivalry-turned-romance of apprentice magicians Celia and Marco like a fairy tale, injecting the perfect dose of whimsy and melancholy into every step of the two's preordained contest. Step through the curtains and let yourself go on a journey you won't hear elsewhere.

8. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Image via Audible

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, now's the perfect time to lose yourself in a good romantic fantasy audiobook. There are hundreds of "romantasy" novels, most of which have fantastic audiobooks. If I had to pick one, though, I'd give the crown to Fourth Wing, the first installment of the ever-expanding Emperyan series.

BookTok's latest obsession has a lot of good things going for it: solid chemistry between its leads, a sweeping kingdom full of wonder and intrigue, and more dragons than you can shake a sword at. The audiobook, narrated by Rebecca Soler and Teddy Hamilton, pulls you out of reality and plops you in the saddle, making you live and breathe the danger and wonder of Navarre without risking getting incinerated by an angry dragon.

7. The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger

Image via Audible

Throughout his career, Steven King has woven a web of interconnected stories so vast that it's barely imaginable. Pinning down a good place to start within King's mammoth body of work is tricky, but most fans (myself included) agree that the first entry in his Dark Tower saga, The Gunslinger, is the safest bet.

The Gunslinger audiobook reads like an old man's relocation of "the old days," one that drowns you in King's desolate, post-apocalyptic world. George Guidall's chiseled, fry voice perfectly fits the Gunslinger, a classic anti-hero willing to do anything to catch his elusive quarry, the Man in Black. Can't decide if you want to read a Western or a fantasy book? Read this and experience the best of both worlds.

6. A Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

The cover of A Court of Thorns and Roses; depicting a wolf shot with an arrow.

I think it's safe to say that my experience with A Court of Thorns and Rose played out the same way it did for most people. Friends pressed the book into my face, telling me, "Drew, you've got to read this; it'll blow your mind!" Eventually, I caved in, and my life turned into a race to turn the pages as fast as possible. When I was done with it, the first thought to emerge from the soup that was once my brain was, "Glad that's over; now I need to listen to the audiobook!"

The audiobook of A Court of Thorns and Roses is one of the smoothest listens I've heard. Jennifer Akeda's tempered, confidant narration breathes life into the words, adding a few drops of color and depth to the fae-touched world of Prythian, shining a light on emotional beats and subtle drops of foreshadowing I didn't notice my first time reading. If you can't seem to get enough ACOTAR in your life, give this a listen.

5. A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin

Image via Audible

Ursula K. Le Guin is my favorite author, and I return to the realm of Earthsea every year. There's something magnetic about Le Guin's world-building, a warmth that melts all awareness of the world outside her pages. A Wizard of Earthsea does a fantastic job of establishing Le Guin's world of islands, linguistic magic, and dragons, and it's got an excellent audiobook.

Rob Inglis, the narrator of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit audiobooks, tells the bittersweet tale of Sparrowhawk with an aura of tender wisdom that will linger in your ears long after you've stopped listening. Like every other work of fiction penned by Le Guin, A Wizard of Earthsea is as much a journey into the human condition as it is an exploration of a fictional world, and it's one of those rare books that almost works better as an audiobook. Almost.

4. A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

Image via Audible

A Song of Ice and Fire is all about voice. The chaos burning within the borders of the Seven Kingdoms isn't the work of a looming Dark Lord; it's the product of power-hungry lords, ladies, and factions fighting for a two-tone throne worth its weight in blood and tears. In Westeros, everyone thinks they're the hero of their story, and the audiobook A Game of Thrones makes that clear from the first sentence.

Roy Dotrice narrates the opening act of George R. R. Martin's epic saga, and the range of his voice allows him to step into the shoes of many characters. There's ever a moment where it feels like he isn't giving a line of dialogue or length of description the attention it deserves, propelling every emotional gut punch and knife twist the story throws at you into "well, that's staying with me for a while.

3. The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

Image via Audible

Some call Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time saga a shameless rip-off of Tolkien, another in a long list of copy-cats trying to leech off his legacy. These people are silly. Tolkien may have influenced Jordan, but his saga does more than enough to build a unique identity for itself. You don't become one of Brandon Sanderson's primary inspirations by living off another author's fumes.

The audiobook for The Eye of the World, the first Wheel of Time book, is a fantastic way to introduce yourself to the series. Kate Reading and Michael Kramer are a tremendous team of narrators. Each brings something unique, from Reading's subtle confidence to Kramer's bombastic delivery. Their teamwork is, ‌in a sense, a reflection of the series' overarching theme of duality and balance.

2. Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Image via Audible

Brandon Sanderson's work is a must-read for any fantasy fan. His novels have fantastic character-driven prose, and creating specific voices for every character is scarily easy as you read. The audiobook of The Way of Kings, the first installment of Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive, does that for you. Yet another audiobook narrated by the Reading-Kramer duo, The Way of Kings is every bit the epic adventure you'd expect. The two narrators give every character a distinct voice, to where it feels less like an audiobook and more like a radio drama.

1. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Image via Audible

Patrick Rothfuss is a fantastic writer. His empathetic, poetic prose allows readers to step into the hearts and minds of his characters, almost all of whom have unique perspectives on the world and life. The Name of the Wind, the first book in The Kingkiller Chronicle, is a fantastic example.

The audiobook for The Name of the Wind, narrated by Nick Podehl, is everything a Rothfuss audiobook should be. Podehl's soft voice fits the story of the titular, worn-out adventurer like a glove. If you're looking for an audiobook that will inspire, terrify, delight, and infuriate you, look no further.

Pokemon Go key art featuring Totodile, Chikorita, and Cyndaquil.

Picking your favorite Pokémon can be tough enough with so many to choose from. But you also need to ensure you've got the right balance for your team. Types are the center of the gameplay, and knowing type strengths and weaknesses is important.

Pokémon Go's type comparison chart is identical to the base games. If you're not familiar with that it, there are a lot of details to remember. It's basically a complicated version of Rock, Paper, Scissors, so we've created a chart to help you identify when to use the best possible Pokémon.

How to find your strengths and weaknesses

The chart below shows each single type of Pokémon in the central column. A Pokemon's weaknesses and resistances are to the left. To the right are recommendations on what attacks to use. Some Pokémon have two types, however. The result is a unique mixture of weaknesses and resistances, with too many combinations to put into a clean chart.

There's some math involved, and it's slightly different from how the mainline games calculate damage. Beneath the chart is the exact math Pokémon Go uses. If you're not great at math (like me), remember these general rules:

  • If a Pokémon's two types share a weakness or resistance, the effect is stronger. For example, Water and Ground types share a weakness to Grass. So if a Water/Ground Pokémon is hit with grass, it's even more effective.
  • If a Pokémon's types have opposing strengths and weaknesses, they cancel each other out. For example, a Water/Dragon type is both weak and resistant to Electric-type attacks. Therefore, Electric-type attacks are neutral against Water/Dragon-type Pokémon.

A chart showing all Pokemon types

The more complex math below will help you to find the specific amount of damage you'll do against any given Pokémon. Keep in mind that the damage numbers you'll see may vary due to other factors, but this is the majority of the calculation.

  • A Super Effective move multiplies your attack's power by 1.6.
  • An attack that hits a resistance reduces its power to 62%.
  • A move that normally has No Effect on a Pokémon in the main games still does 24% damage.
  • If both of a Pokémon's types share a weakness, a move that hits will do 2.56 times the damage.
  • If both types share a resistance, that attack will be at 39% power.

A note about passives

In the base Pokémon games, there's a mechanic called Abilities. These are passive powers that Pokémon have to help give them unique advantages in combat. These Abilities, however, are missing from Pokémon Go. You may be used to Gengar being immune to Ground-type attacks if you've played other Pokémon games. But he doesn't possess the Levitate ability in Pokémon Go. That means he is weak to Ground types due to being part Poison type.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Hard and Very Hard Lock guide

Hard and Very Hard Locks can prove to be stern tests in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, as they are significantly more challenging to pick.

It's very easy to distinguish between the types of locks when you're about to crack one open. If you get the "This lock is too difficult" message, you're on to the correct one (in the context of this guide). However, these locks are just harder to crack, not impossible, but you'll have to take some extra steps to complete the process.

How to pick hard locks in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Cracking open a lock on doors and chests depends on your Thievery skill. The locks are of five types: Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard. The first two types of locks are straightforward to pick, and you can attempt opening them at any given time. To crack Medium, Hard, and Very Hard locks, here are general Thievery requirements you'll need.

  • Medium: Thievery 7
  • Hard: Thievery 14
  • Very Hard: Thievery 19

To pick the Hard and Very Hard locks, you'll have to buff your Thievery Skill. A sustainable and effective way to do so is by spending time with Blacksmith Radovan. As you spend more time smithing with him, your Craftsmanship Skill will improve, and eventually unlock the Locksmith Perk. This Perk will offer +3 Thievery at all times for all types of locks.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Image via Destructoid

The Mischief Artist Perk might not be as effective, but it will provide a +3 bonus to both Thievery and Stealth for 120 seconds after picking a lock or pickpocketing an individual. If you're yet to unlock the two perks, you can always rely on your Alchemy recipes.

The Quickfinger potion temporarily improves your Thievery skill, and you can prepare it from the Alchemy bench.

  • Collect 2x Eyebright, 2x Valerian, and 1x Cobweb.
  • Pour water into the cauldron, and add Cobweb along with Eyebright.
  • Boil the items for 3 turns.
  • Add Valerian to the cauldron.
  • Boil for 1 turn.

Your Quickfinger potion will be ready if you complete all the steps. It will increase Thievery (and Craftsmanship) by 2(10 minutes)/4(20 minutes)/6(40 minutes) based on whether it's Weak/Normal/Strong potion.

Lockpicking isn't the only important activity to complete in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. If you're looking to make more resources, check out this guide. Additionally, potions can not only help you to open the Hard and Very Hard locks, but you cal also cure Drunkenness and Hangovers with their help.

A panning bird's eye view of a sandy beach, adorned with palm trees, with towering skyscrapers looming over it. A plane flying a banner passes through a sunny, blue sky in the background.

Grand Theft Auto VI is riding a titanic wave of hype right into the annals of gaming history, and its release is still nearly a year away. But that's also the cause of frequent leaks that accompany the title's development.

Luminary publisher Rockstar Games' current project faces off against insider information, data miners, hackers, leaked documents, and more. And while a few of these leaks were a splash in the pond, others caused a tsunami of press coverage and speculation. Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two Interactive were left with egg on their faces multiple times.

Each of those incidents is chronicled in the timeline below with details regarding how the leaks transpired, and the fallout they caused.

Inside Gaming's inside info on GTA VI

March 5, 2018

YouTube channel Inside Gaming claims it received information detailing the setting, release date, and protagonist of GTA VI from an inside source. The informant's identity remained anonymous to avoid any potential backlash from the leak.

The video makes several claims, including:

  • GTA VI's primary setting is Miami, Florida, or a fictionalized version of the city and its surrounding areas in the southern part of the state
  • Development of the new title is codenamed Project Americas due to players traveling between North and South America in-game
  • The game's release date is sometime in 2021 or 2022
  • GTA VI will feature the series' first female protagonist

Gaming journalist Brian Gaar, the info's recipient, said the leak caused a ruffling of feathers at Rockstar. According to Gaar's interview on the March 12, 2024 episode of Inside Games' podcast, the studio went into lockdown in search of the leaker. Later, Gaar received a phone call from a Rockstar vice president asking for his source at the company.

Take-Two's leaked GTA VI document

October 6, 2019

Reddit user Fresh305954 posts that a location scout asked permission to take pictures of their workplace in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami. The scout claimed she worked for Rockstar and the photos were for reference. Days later, the Redditor posted a picture of the agreement between the scout and the manager of the business.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GTA6/comments/df4ln9/pictures_of_the_contract_for_those_who_didnt/

Contact info in the agreement referenced Leah Sokolowski, a committee member at Location Managers Guild International, who worked on several Hollywood films. In an interview on the May 21, 2019 episode of the Film Florida podcast, Leah mentioned "a change in the types of productions coming to our state (Florida)". She elaborated she was currently working for a major player in the digital media industry, which hired her to conduct site tours and visits in multiple areas of Florida and other southeastern states. She was unable to identify her employer due to a non-disclosure agreement but revealed enough info to deduce that the employer was Take-Two.

Tom Henderson's leak video on GTA VI

June 27, 2021

Insider Gaming owner Tom Henderson uploads a YouTube video claiming he received the following information from an inside source:

  • GTA VI is set in the current day, and includes Vice City as a location
  • GTA Online's map will evolve, changing the default map and expanding by adding new areas with each dlc
  • GTA VI features multiple playable characters, including a female protagonist
  • The female protagonist is an intelligent, tech-savvy hacker
  • The game's release date is sometime in 2024-2025
  • GTA VI is coming to current-gen (9th) consoles and PC only
  • Rockstar plans to incorporate cryptocurrency into future storylines and in-game rewards (no real-world value)

LAPSUS$ GTA VI leak costs Take-Two $2 Billion

September 18, 2022

Arion Kurtaj, an 18-year-old member of the international hacker gang LAPSUS$, leaks 50 hours of GTA VI development footage, over 90 files containing unreleased assets for the game, and its source code onto the internet. Before the leak, he attempted to extort Rockstar Games financially.

Kurtaj accomplished this feat by compiling emails and phone numbers of Rockstar employees and contacting Rockstar's staff support, pretending to be an employee who forgot their password. He infiltrates several employee accounts, accessing the studio's private Slack channels, including the GTA VI development channel. After the leak, Take-Two's stock shares plummet 13%, causing a $2 billion loss. Rockstar also claims to suffer a $5 million loss, along with losing thousands of staff hours dealing with the fallout.

Kurtaj was involved in previous LAPSUS$ cyber attacks on Uber, Nvidia, Microsoft, numerous law enforcement departments, the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and personal crypto wallets, extorting over $10 million from his victims. He managed to hack Rockstar while on bail under police supervision.

Deemed unfit to stand trial due to a severe form of autism, Kurtaj was sentenced to a secure hospital for life unless considered no longer a threat to society. However, Kurtaj's release seems unlikely due to his admission that he will continue to commit cybercrime if freed.

The information leaked by Kurtaj was compiled into a 60-page Google Drive document, which can be viewed here.

GTA VI Map Leak

December 1, 2023

Rockstar North head of development Aaron Garbut's son uploads a 13-second clip to TikTok showing footage of a panning aerial view of GTA VI. The original video was removed from the site but remains viewable on other accounts.

GTA VI Trailer Leak

December 4, 2023

Just one day before its scheduled release, Twitter user @Gta6trailerleak posts the GTA VI trailer in its entirety, with a massive buy bitcoin stamp over the video. Despite initial skepticism towards the video's veracity, Rockstar confirms the leak within the hour on Twitter, releasing the official video to YouTube early. The leak hardly impacted the trailer itself, which still broke numerous YouTube records and had over 93 million views on its first day.

https://twitter.com/RockstarGames/status/1731813331244085531

Currently, the trailer was the last major leak, but with almost a year before the game's release, another incident may occur. Although I doubt anything can sink GTA VI at this point.
