PCGamesN Wednesday, May 14, 2025 12:15 PM ![]() Doom The Dark Ages has finally arrived, and id Software is doing more to bring back that classic Doom vibe than fiddling with the freneticism that made its predecessor, Doom Eternal, unpalatable for many of the series' most fervent fans. Tucked away in the rip-tearing shooter's settings is a very special toggle that will give both player and Slayer some serious flashbacks. Echoing my sentiment in my Doom The Dark Ages review, the iconic FPS series is typically at its best when id lets its creativity flow, and the studio loves to hide a treat or two in its options tabs. Eternal's HUD skins, for example, were a zesty delight that added a pop of personality to your playthrough and were, for me at least, a crucial vibe setter. PCGamesN Wednesday, May 14, 2025 11:44 AM ![]() Nvidia may have very quickly realized that most of its latest GPUs need to come with more VRAM as standard, as a new leak states that a 24GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 graphics card "will be released at the end of the year," which is much sooner than expected. The new GPU looks as though it will be called either the RTX 5080 Ti or RTX 5080 Super, and could quickly take over from the standard 16GB 5080, which was launched earlier this year. Largely thanks to the lack of high-end competition, my RTX 5080 review was largely favorable, gaining it a place on our best graphics card guide. However, I was also surprised to find that this expensive GPU couldn't run our Full RT Indiana Jones and the Great Circle benchmark at 4K, with the lack of VRAM turning the game into a stuttery mess. It's a situation that Nvidia could easily address by adding an extra 8GB to the frame buffer. MORE FROM PCGAMESN: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 review, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 review, Best graphics cards |

PCGamesN Wednesday, May 14, 2025 10:52 AM ![]() What are the best tower defense games on PC? For a time, the humble tower defense was one of the most popular genres out there. They may appear to be simple strategy games for more casual players, but fans would call them accessible tactical titles that require sharp reflexes, a sharper mind, and quick improvisation. The approachability of tower defense games stems from how deceptively straightforward they are - at least to begin with. A horde of enemies comes from specific directions across a small arena, and the player has to improvise a set of appropriate defenses - using scant resources - to deal with them. Enemies become tougher and more numerous as the game progresses, but the player gets access to better equipment to deal with them too. While the genre often veers towards smartphone and tablet gaming, there are still many fantastic tower defense games on PC right now, with many of them being free PC games. The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy creator and TooKyo Games Co-founder Kazutaka Kodaka's discussed the game quite a bit on social media since its debut, and his latest statements involved the possibility of it inspiring an anime adaptation. He noted sales would affect the chances of that happening, and he followed up going over which route could be the inspiration for that version.
Kodaka started discussing the possibility of a The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy anime after someone mentioned wanting a series or some OVAs. He then shared that tweet and said, "If the game sells well, we'll definitely turn it into an anime! To make that happen, I'm doing everything I can to bring more players to Hundred Line."
Kazutaka Kodaka's follow-up messages then got into the possible route that could be used for that adaptation. In one reply, he noted, "I have a lot of ideas!" He also mentioned there being multiple "possibilities." When answering one person's question, he said, "I'm going to pick and choose the route that the Hundred Line will take to get animated!"
This wouldn't be the first anime adaptation of a game Kodaka worked on. It happened with Danganronpa. Danganronpa: The Animation is streaming on Crunchyroll now. He was also involved with Tribe Nine, which is a multimedia project that includes an anime (also on Crunchyroll) and game.
The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is available on the Nintendo Switch and PC, and TooKyo Games is open to the possibility of an eventual anime adaptation if sales are high enough.

After Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail launched, a new Arcadion 8-player raid series started, with two of the AAC Light-heavyweight bosses being Sweet Poison: Honey B Lovely and Vile Heat: Brute Bomber, and now we have official concept art for each of them via FFXIV Online Official Blog. PR team member Miyamiya also teased that AAC Cruiserweight concept art could be shared as well.
Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for the FFXIV Dawntrail AAC Light-heavyweight M2 Honey B Lovely and M3 Brute Bomber fights below.
For those unfamiliar, the FFXIV Dawntrail AAC Light-heavyweight Arcadion raid series is treated as championship fights at Solution Nine. Each of the bosses we face are people who use souls from different types of monsters. This alters their appearances and allows them to gain access to abilities during fights. In the case of Honey B Lovely, she uses a Queen Bee when she fights in FFXIV, while Brute Bomber taps into a Bomb King's abilities.
In the case of the FFXIV concept art for each, we only see these transformed versions of the characters. Color art of both Brute Bomber and Honey B Lovely appear showing the full version of the design that inspired the in-game model. There are also more monochromatic images to highlight specific details or show elements and accents from the monsters implemented in the characters.
Here are both pieces of concept art:

While the AAC Light-heavyweight fights appeared in FFXIV Dawntrail in July 2024, the AAC Cruiserweight ones didn't launch until March 2025. They appeared after 7.2 and introduced four new competitors.
Final Fantasy XIV and its Dawntrail expansion are available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

The placeholder is already live on YouTube ahead of its debut at 7am PT/9am ET.
Here's that placeholder video:
This will be an English version of the showcase, which means all of the details are identical to ones revealed when Atlus announced the Japanese presentation on May 12, 2025. Members of the development team, like Chief Producer Yohsuke Uda, Development Director and Main Scenario Planner Yusuke Nitta, Development Producer Jun Matsunaga, and Live Ops Director Yuta Sakai, will all be present to discuss the game. Two of the Japanese voice actresses playing characters in the game, Chika Anzai (YUI) and Kaede Hondo (Motoha Arai), will also appear. While the English stream title only said, "first announcement," the Japanese one specifically noted it will bring up the release date for it.
We already saw other teases regarding the Persona 5 free-to-play spin-off in 2025. In March 2025, it was confirmed the PC version of the game would head to Steam.

Nikkei Asia and The Verge reported that during Sony's May 14, 2025 Q4 2025 Earnings Conference Report President Donald Trump's tariffs came up, regarding the potential cost being passed on to customers like new PS5 owners and possibly making the console or other devices locally. Seeking Alpha also shared a transcript of the call. It also said the effect of the tariffs on foreign countries could cost Sony around ¥100 billion (~$680 million). It didn't announce any set decisions yet. [Thanks, Nikkei Asia, The Verge, and Seeking Alpha!]
Both Sony CFO Lin Tao and CEO Hiroki Totoki mentioned passing on the cost of the Trump tariffs to people who buy electronics or the PS5. Tao mentioned the duties affecting the prices of the company's products and also "shipment allocation." When Totoki brought it up in Seeking Alpha's transcript, he mentioned that the ensuing costs of these fees could result in customers paying more or Sony either going with another model or stopping making things that are "not profitable."
Destin Legarie from Save State Plus shared a video of Lin Tao's statement on social media.
As for making Sony devices like the PS5 in the US to avoid the Trump tariffs, Hiroki Totoki also addressed that. He mentioned it could be possible. However, as pointed out in the transcript of the call, he noted, "But PS5 are being manufactured in many areas, whether it's going to be manufactured in the US or not." He also mentioned the possibly duties like a 100% fee on any movie not made in the US could affect Sony.
Prior to these statements, Sony already announce PS5 price increases. In April 2025, it noted in certain regions the console and optional disc drive peripheral will cost more due to current situations.
The PS5 is available worldwide.

Good Smile Company and Square Enix announced that there will be Dragon Quest model kits based on the Dracky and Slimes. Three different slime variants will be available, though we'll only get one version of the flying-type critter. The bat-like buddy is most expensive at ¥2,200 (~$15), while the slimes are ¥1,760 (~$12). They'll launch in Japan in December 2025, and we could see them worldwide after.
The three Dragon Quest Slimes are a standard blue one, an orange She-Slime that is referred to as a Red Slime, and a Lime Slime. The blue and orange ones are on green meadow bases that make them look like they're sitting in a field, while the green one is on a gray, "stone" dungeon base. The initial photos show them assembled, then unassembled. The runners show each one is made up of only seven parts designed to snap together. The bases also can snap together, so the characters could be displayed side-by-side.
As for the Dracky, it appears on a dungeon base. Said base also can interlock with the others in this series. The runners for the model kit aren't shown.
Here's how all four look:

I'm going to start this off by stating the obvious, which is that Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is the Power Stone and Capcom vs SNK compilation. After spending hours with it, I feel like anyone buying it most likely will do so because it's an easy way to experience those major titles again. This isn't to say the other fighters aren't also great, as I feel Project Justice, Plasma Sword, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper are games worthy of celebrating and replaying too. (Especially Project Justice!) But this latest collection does feel like a showcase for certain titles, and it does it well.
Like the original Capcom Fighting Collection, the games in Capcom Fighting Collection 2 hail from about the same period of time. All the titles appear from the second half of the 90s to the early 2000s. The focus just feels different. While Darkstalkers and Street Fighter spin-offs populated the original, with a touch of Cyberbots and Red Earth for good measure, this feels more like a celebration of other IPs and crossovers. Both Power Stone and Power Stone 2 are highlights! Capcom vs SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro and Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001 packs in icons from both companies' properties! Capcom Fighting Evolution, thought not a highlight, still can involve a fun time with Darkstalkers, Red Earth, and Street Fighters. If I had the power and freedom to adjust the roster, I think I would have swapped either that or even Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein to ensure Rival Schools: United by Fate had been included to join Project Justice, which I love. Meanwhile, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper almost feels tossed in so Capcom could go, "Hey! There's a Street Fighter too!"
In terms of picks, I think Capcom Fighting Collection 2 hosts a roster that is even stronger than the original compilation. There's a better range of titles here, so you can really see and appreciate the different styles Capcom experimented with over the years. Power Stone and Power Stone 2 still feel fantastic and look great too, due to their mechanics and the filters available. Both the Capcom vs SNK feel solid. I even found Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper a valuable contribution, since you can then see how entries like Plasma Sword or Project Justice differ or compare the movesets of Street Fighter characters in the crossovers to their behaviors in an original entry. I will say that I think Capcom Fighting Evolution is the weakest inclusion, and its flaws regarding character design, moveset, and other gameplay choices seem even more obvious when the much better Capcom vs SNK entries are on-hand.
While the range of people playing ahead of launch was small and I largely played against one other individuals, I found online multiplayer worked wonderfully. Power Stone 2 is the entry I spent the most time playing online and, while I'm not sure I noticed the rollback netcode as much there, I did experience seamless and enjoyable matches. I especially had fun with Project Justice and appreciated how well it worked.
I also appreciated that Capcom Fighting Collection 2 continued to show Capcom's efforts to ensure the games are accessible and we're able to learn more about the work that went into them. Training Mode returns from the first compilation, allowing someone to take their time and learn about both game mechanics and how to master certain characters in controlled environments. It still works well and makes it easier to prepare for ranked fights or harder difficulties. Likewise, there is a Game Difficulty option in the Game Settings again for single-player experiences, which can help. One-button special moves also return as a customization option, and I feel like that's handy for both newcomers or people who might have difficulty with some of the more complicated inputs due to extenuating circumstances. It's a level of approachability that suits a collection designed to reach out to as many people as possible.
Oh, and the Museum is still great. There's concept art. You can check out character designs. You can see the marquee cards for games that appeared in arcades. A jukebox feature lets you listen to tracks from the games, organized by title. Everything is really visible. It's easy to zoom in and check on details. We already know Capcom is good at handling this type of section based on all past compilations, and it's exactly what you'd expect here again.
Capcom Fighting Collection 2 is great for many reasons, ranging from being a means of preserving fantastic games, easily play Power Stone, and reminding people the Rival Schools series existed. The roster of games available is sound, though I'm not a fan of Capcom Fighting Evolution. The online component seemed stable under the conditions I tested it and like a boon for accessibility. Not only that, but the actual accessibility features that make it more inviting for beginners and allow us insights into development via the Museum are lovely. I suppose it'd be appropriate to call this a sensible collection that fills missing gaps when it comes to accessing Capcom's library.
Capcom Fighting Collection 2 will be available on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on May 16, 2025.

Marvel Rivals' next update, dropping on May 15, is adding a new feature called Chrono Shield Cards, and the competitive scene is about to get a whole lot worse because of it. And I have just one question: Why?
Chrono Shield Cards function the same way as the already existing Chrono Shield feature, with one major difference that makes them a problem rather than a nice reprieve: You can hold up to 20 at once and use them whenever you like.
![]()
This new mechanic feels incredibly pay-to-win since having these special cards in your inventory means you can literally pay to stay put and rank up. Competitive is meant to be a fierce battleground where players can demonstrate their skills and work hard to move up, so this new system goes entirely against everything it's meant to be.
Initially, eight of the Chrono Shield Cards will be available for free by progressing in the event starting on May 15. We don't know what other acquisition methods there will be for this feature down the line, but even if they remain solely free items earned by playing, it still feels like a pay-to-win system since these cards can be spent whenever to block losses.
Most items end up in the shop eventually, and since there's room for up to 20 of these passes in your inventory, there will certainly be other methods for obtaining them outside of the event. Regardless of how it works, there's just too much room for players to abuse this system.
Trolling and throwing are both going to be even more rampant than they already are since there's now a system in place protecting players who do so. The competitive scene is going to vastly change with Chrono Shield Cards in play, and it won't be for the better.
Player reactions are, understandably, pretty divided over this choice. Popular Marvel Rivals creators like Eskay, Flats, and Bogur have already shared strong stances against what they see as a pay-to-win system, with Flats saying, "There ain't NO WAY y'all put a way to pay money to not lose points in a COMPETITIVE LOSS???"
Some players think this feature could be a good thing, though, especially for those struggling to reach Gold to get the free skin. There have been many complaints about the ranked mode throughout season two, including massive Strategist buffs and Vanguard nerfs to combat some of these issues.
"If it only works at Gold and below, maybe this is just NetEase trying to ease the process of getting the ranked reward skin to those struggling with it," one player said on Reddit.
Even if their intentions are in the right place with this idea, NetEase is missing the mark. Sure, Chrono Shield Cards may genuinely help a few honest, hardworking players, but they will harm the vast majority. Trolls are being encouraged to throw match after match with no consequence thanks to this system, and there's going to be far more people who use it to cause chaos than there are those who use it as intended.
I wouldn't be as opposed to Chrono Shield Cards if we were only being given one or two to use, but allowing everyone to store up to 20 is just ridiculous, especially when we already have the Chrono Shield effect that takes place automatically after a few losses. There's just no point to the ranked mode if everyone can freely toss around special cards to rank up.
There are certainly many issues with the current competitive scene, like Strategists not earning enough points compared to Duelists, and the match continuing even after a player disconnects. But Chrono Shield Cards aren't the right fix for this situation—they're just another even worse problem that's being thrown into the mix.
Coming alongside the battle pass exclusivity changes that brought back OG battle pass skins, this feature announcement has led to quite a bit of controversy among the community. NetEase has been really good at listening to community feedback so far, though, so hopefully they'll hear and address our concerns with this one too.
What do you think about Chrono Shield Cards blocking losses in competitive mode?

One of the most challenging achievements you can earn in The Precinct is We're Gonna Need a Bigger Holding Cell. It requires you to arrest six criminals during one in-game shift, which is especially tricky if you're focusing on parking violations or like to take your time playing.
However, despite this seeming very difficult, there are several ways to arrest six criminals in one shift with little to no issues. It may take a while, but once you learn the strategy, it's easy to replicate in the future.
Table of contents
How to get the We're Gonna Need a Bigger Holding Cell trophy in The Precinct
Earning the We're Gonna Need a Bigger Holding Cell achievement in The Precinct requires finding six criminals, arresting them, and escorting them back to the ACPD station's building. You'll need to book them manually for the arrests to count toward your progress. There are three main ways to obtain this achievement easily:
Of these three options, working overtime until you catch and book six criminals is the easiest way to earn this trophy. The Precinct doesn't automatically stop your day once your shift ends, and there's no energy system preventing you from continuing. Any XP and criminals you book will count toward your shift, even if you work several hours overtime.
![]()
Another option is to play through The Precinct's story until you unlock custom shifts. That way, rather than sticking with whatever Kowalski assigns you, you can make your own schedule, including its location, variant, and duration. Picking a 24-hour shift will give you much more time to find criminals. You can reduce this to 12 or 16 if you're pressed for time and are confident you can arrest six people in this time, but 24 is an equally safe bet. You can also use these strategies to earn 10,000 XP in a single shift if you're struggling with multiple achievements.
How to find six criminals to arrest in The Precinct
From here, your strategy will partially depend on personal preference. If you're proficient in tackling vehicular crimes like motor vehicle theft or DUIs, you can focus on these for your six bookings. Otherwise, you can look around for street crime like drug dealing, burglary, and armed assaults. The only downside to this is the chance of armed NPCs eliminating you and slowing your progress. Fortunately, this doesn't reset your shift or end it, so you can continue as normal until you find your six criminals.
Once you find six criminals, escort them, and bring them to the ACPD Precinct, you'll unlock the We're Gonna Need a Bigger Holding Cell trophy and get a bunch of XP along the way. If you're interested in pursuing more achievements, be sure to check out our complete list of rare car locations in The Precinct.

The freedom offered by open-world games is hard to resist, and they do a fantastic job of scratching that exploration itch. The genre also lends itself to long games chock-full of activities, and some immersive open-world titles can even be played indefinitely. These 25 are must-plays.
Our top 25 best open world games out right now
Below, we've listed what we believe are the 25 best open-world games you can play right now. They're ranked from those you should play first in position 1, to those you should play last in position 25. However, we recommend open-world game fans play every entry on this list. There are no bad games here, just ones we think you should prioritize and those you can sit on for a while.
25. Forza Horizon 5
![]()
When open-world games are discussed, racing games are often neglected, yet they have a noteworthy presence in the genre. Forza Horizon 5 features curvy roads that wind through Mexico, exposing racers to picture-perfect scenery. It's a must-play title for all gearheads, and with a massive catalog of customizable cars available, it has the potential to provide endless hours of fun.
24. Genshin Impact
![]()
Although Genshin Impact is often pegged as just another gacha game, its awe-inspiring take on the open-world genre is impossible to ignore. I've been playing for years, and I still haven't fully explored the map, especially considering the constant wave of new updates. The stunning landscapes and distinct cultures offer something new, no matter where you go. Cooking regional dishes, learning about each area's traditions, and discovering hidden gems are just a few of the ways the world keeps drawing me back.
23. Cyberpunk 2077
![]()
Despite its rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 made an impressive comeback thanks to a series of much-needed updates and refinements. Now, Night City is widely praised for its vigorous atmosphere, where the world feels genuinely lived-in. The city tells countless stories through its gritty back alleys, glowing advertisements, and even in the fleeting chatter between NPCs. The neon lights from billboards and towering skyscrapers create a visual spectacle that's hard to look away from.
For those craving even more of that high-tech, high-stakes city life, the Phantom Liberty expansion pushes the experience further. It opens up new districts, deeper narratives, and more reasons to lose yourself in the chaotic beauty of Cyberpunk 2077.
22. Starfield
![]()
I wish I could place Starfield higher on the list, but unfortunately, some parts of it feel a bit hollow. Even so, it remains one of the best open-world games out there, delivering a truly immersive space experience. Joining different factions makes exploration more compelling, with side stories that carry just as much tension and excitement as the main campaign. Ever wanted to be a space pirate? Starfield lets you do just that, along with a host of other unique paths to explore.
21. Marvel's Spider-Man 2
![]()
While Marvel's Spider-Man 2 might not boast as many features as the games in the top 10, it still has more than enough to keep you hooked. Whether you're a New Yorker or a die-hard Marvel fan, the game is filled with familiar landmarks and comic-inspired storylines that make every corner of the city worth exploring. There are plenty of hidden Easter eggs, like the Home Run trophy, where you can snag an achievement at the iconic baseball stadium.
You'll also lose track of time chasing collectibles and diving into some of the most engaging side missions. And let's not forget the pure joy of swinging through the city as Peter Parker or Miles Morales. Sometimes, I find myself just gliding through the streets without any particular destination, caught up in the fun of it all.
20. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag
![]()
I adore the Assassin's Creed series, but the one game I keep coming back to out of all of them is Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. This pirate take on the franchise puts the core idea of the Assassins and Templars to the side for most of the story and simply focuses on making you a pirate.
Skull and Bones was brought to life based on how good the sailing and moment-to-moment gameplay in this title is. However, most fans would say Black Flag still has better sailing all these years later. The tangible open world that you can disembark and climb around comes to life while you play, and there really is nothing else like it out there.
19. No Man's Sky
![]()
Since its initial release in 2016, Hello Games has continued to support and update No Man's Sky with new features and mechanics that make it bigger and better than most of the games on this list. You could be a trader, a pirate, set up a city on an unknown world, establish a major trading hub for other players to visit, or build complex computers all within the game. The most basic gameplay element is exploring a procedurally-generated universe at your own pace. A universe that still has me in awe almost a decade later.
One update introduced a new Expedition and a way to access old ones. Extended questlines encourage players to engage with nearly every system ever introduced, including those you might not know about. I've put hundreds of hours into No Man's Sky, and I never tire of it. There's definitely a learning curve to get started with, but once you're in, you'll never want to leave.
18. Subnautica
![]()
Subnautica is an open-world survival game with one of the best unique angles on this list. It's set on a planet almost entirely covered by an ocean. You'll crash onto this planet, build a base, gather food, and hunt for survivors. While the sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero, is much more story-focused, this game has the best world for surprisingly deep exploration and a satisfying gameplay loop. It's not a horror game, but it'll give you a few good jumpscares too.
17. Dragon's Dogma 2
![]()
When I first indulged in the open world of Dragon's Dogma 2, I was completely lost. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. In fact, I loved the feeling of not knowing where to go, stumbling upon secrets that could lead to grand adventures. Even if it could get frustrating not knowing where to head next, your Pawn can help guide you to your destinations. It's a mechanic I constantly relied on, and it made having allies all the more beneficial.
Though fast travel features are available through wagons and port crystals, their use is quite restrictive. This means you'll mostly be on your feet the entire time. While it can be challenging and sometimes tedious not having more fast travel options, it makes the exploration feel more grounded and the journey more difficult, especially with the many enemies you'll encounter along the way.
16. Days Gone
![]()
Days Gone is one of the ultimate survival tests in an open-world setting. It might not be the most populated game world, set two years after a devastating global pandemic, but that desolate atmosphere is part of what makes it so gripping. The environment feels unforgiving, and every choice carries weight. You'll spend a lot of time looting for supplies and gathering materials essential for crafting and maintaining equipment. These resources are vital for enduring the diverse biomes and confronting the violent gangs and relentless Freakers you encounter.
What sets Days Gone apart is its focus on realism. It's one of the few open-world games where your vehicle needs fuel, turning your motorcycle into more than just a fast-travel tool. Running low on gas in the middle of nowhere adds tension and forces you to plan ahead, making each journey across the wilderness feel like a small survival story of its own.
15. Ghost of Tsushima
![]()
Anyone who loves Japan and Japanese culture absolutely has to play Ghost of Tsushima. It's far from your standard open-world game, with the location, Tsushima, brought to life with incredible attention to detail by developer Sucker Punch. In it, you'll experience a tale of loss, betrayal, and revenge as a samurai living through the area's Mongol invasion. It's a classic samurai story based on real-world events. It's heartfelt, has a beautifully stunning world, and deep gameplay systems to keep you enthralled all the way through.
14. Death Stranding
![]()
Kojima Productions' Death Stranding is a polarizing game. Players must deliver packages across a vast open world while creating routes they and others can use. The story is complex but well worth your time if you've got the hours to spare for the cutscenes. This game isn't for everyone. To some, it's a big walking simulator, while to others, it's a profound experience. With Death Stranding 2 on the way in 2025, I've seen people replay this game and discover how good it is when given a chance. Don't miss out.
13. Hogwarts Legacy
![]()
Every Harry Potter fan has likely imagined what it would be like to wander the hallowed halls of Hogwarts, and with Hogwarts Legacy, that long-held dream finally takes shape. Stepping into the shoes of a fifth-year student, you're not just attending classes; you're living the fantasy. You can stroll through the castle corridors, soar above the treetops on a broomstick, or take a more daring route by riding a magical creature through the wilderness.
Beyond the school grounds, Hogsmeade welcomes you with its cozy charm and hidden surprises, though you might want to think twice before venturing into the mysterious shop tucked away in town—it's home to one of the most spine-chilling quests I've encountered. The map stretches even farther, reaching into places that were once only hinted at in the books and films, now fully realized in vivid detail.
12. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
![]()
Like Dragon's Dogma 2, I was utterly lost at first in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, trying to make sense of its intricate paths and richly detailed medieval world. What began as a rough, uncertain start quickly turned into one of my most cherished open-world experiences of 2025. The game overflows with activities, including testing your strength in fighting arenas, playing dice, or forging your own weapons as a blacksmith.
Just when it feels like you've uncovered everything, the second map, Kuttenberg, unlocks with a whole new layer of exploration. New settlements, hidden trails, and unexpected quests add fresh momentum to the journey. With two expansive maps, the game delivers long after you think you've seen it all.
11. Shadow of the Colossus (Original, Remaster & Remake)
![]()
Although Shadow of the Colossus certainly packs both good gameplay and a surprisingly emotional story, its unique place in gaming is, to some degree, a product of the atmosphere created by the open-world design. Wander ventures through a hauntingly empty world, though it is not a void. Crumbling architecture and hidden ruins tell ancient stories without words. Nothing is ever fully explained, and the world remains a mysterious realm filled with structures and forces far beyond Wander's comprehension.
This phenomenal game has both a remastered version and a remake for players to lose themselves in. While you might not have the time to play through all three, you only need to experience this story and world once to appreciate it. I'd recommend the remake, which is the most recent version to release, because it boasts a beautiful world, solid controls, and it's just easier to get a hold of.
10. Fallout 4
![]()
For a while, I had gone on a hiatus from gaming and decided to rope myself back in with Fallout 4. Its magnificent open world made me remember why I love gaming worlds in the first place, where there are almost endless possibilities. I got caught up in so many side quests and collectible-finding adventures that I would forget about the main story altogether.
You'll find a plethora of settlements, and you can even build up one yourself to make a dystopian empire. The characters you meet also make the journey more fulfilling, and you may find a partner for life with Fallout 4's romance features.
9. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
![]()
While Yakuza 0 is typically the most highly praised entry in the series, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is the underrated gem that deserves a lot more attention. It's one of the best open-world games I've played, period, with its abundance of activities and strong ties to real-life Japan. Sure, the map may not be as large as others on this list, but it's memorable enough that I always know exactly where to go without needing directions.
The side storylines have a lot of variety, from training Kiryu at the gym to managing a baseball team and befriending NPCs at the bar. And that's only the beginning, as there are many more things to dive into that keep the world feeling alive and interesting. Yakuza 6 also introduced the Dragon Engine system, making everything in the world feel more lifelike and responsive. You don't just revisit the beloved Kamurocho—you also get to explore Onomichi, a new location that brings even more content to the experience.
8. Grand Theft Auto 5
![]()
GTA 5 presents a massive urban map for players to raise hell in, and it manages to go a step further than its predecessors by featuring three protagonists that players can switch between on the fly. The storylines of the trio intertwine satisfyingly, and their antics provide hours of high-stakes action. As one of the bestselling games of all time, GTA 5 has cemented its place in gaming history, and despite its age, it still manages to compete favorably against recent open-world titles.
7. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
![]()
The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, released in 2015, proved that CD Projekt Red can box with the best in the open-world genre. It follows Geralt on his quest to rescue Ciri. Along the way, you get to explore an enormous world filled with quests that seldom feel like busy work. A late 2022 re-release of the game on current-gen systems has polished the game even further, giving fans a reason to jump back into Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy world.
6. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
![]()
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim made its first appearance on the now-iconic date of 11 November 2011, and it has remained a permanent fixture in gaming culture, with re-releases on the Nintendo Switch and current-gen consoles ensuring it can be played almost anywhere. Skyrim has yet to overstay its welcome due to the active modding community that has developed around it. With the right mods, it feels like an entirely different game.
5. Horizon Forbidden West
![]()
Horizon Forbidden West doesn't reinvent the wheel in terms of open-world gameplay, and plenty of other games follow a similar structure. What sets it apart from its competitors is its beauty. It manages to artfully blend sci-fi robots with primitive tribes and wild jungles, and the result is an admirably unique aesthetic. Best of all, this is presented to players with graphics that make the game one of the most gorgeous of all time.
The game's DLC, Burning Shores, extends the story further and, in my opinion, is the best conclusion to an open-world game on PS5. The region adds new mechanics and dozens of hours of content to get stuck into. The best part is how it looks forward to the third game in the series.
4. Elden Ring
![]()
FromSoftware's critically acclaimed Elden Ring blends the studio's notoriously difficult combat with an open world dripping with enchanting fantasy elements courtesy of A Song of Ice and Fire's George R.R. Martin. The game's greatest contribution to the genre comes from its willingness to turn its back on popular modern conventions that emphasize easy-to-understand user experiences propped up by detailed HUDs. In comparison, Elden Ring adopts a minimalist approach, allowing players to get lost and carve out a unique adventure.
The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC adds a region the size of the base game's starting area and an obscene number of new weapons and bosses to master. It's also packed with lore for those who like to overanalyze FromSoftware titles to dig into. Out of every game on this list, Elden Ring is certainly the one that could suck up the most hours of your life.
3. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
![]()
Metal Gear 5: The Phantom Pain continues to innovate the franchise's stealth gameplay, though it is applied to an open-world environment. As usual, players find themselves on solo missions that involve infiltrating enemy bases. However, the sprawling open world allows for an almost infinite number of ways to complete objectives. Snake also has a plethora of weapons, including cardboard boxes and water guns, to use ingeniously.
2. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
![]()
Like other highly critically acclaimed titles in the genre, Breath of the Wild features a beautiful, intricate world. The sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, continues to build on Breath of the Wild's successful foundation. Even though it shares much of the same landscape as Breath of the Wild, this sequel introduces so much more, with the soaring Sky Islands and the haunting Depths below.
Perhaps most notably, Link can now fuse items. This has opened a new realm of creativity, as players can now craft new weapons and build structures that allow them to interact with the world in new ways. When it comes to emergent gameplay that rewards imagination, Tears of the Kingdom has set a new bar.
1. Red Dead Redemption 2
![]()
Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the Van Der Linde gang as its members attempt to cope with the growing wave of industrialization and societal changes that spell the end for their outlaw days. Players take the role of Arthur Morgan, and the world is teeming with things to do.
Though the game is primarily an American Western, it has strong naturalist themes, and players can put the guns away and just enjoy the untamed acres. When it comes to intricate open-world design, Red Dead Redemption 2 sits at the top, providing an unparalleled example of just how immersive open-world games can get.
Of course, open-world games do have their downsides. They tend to be buggy, and poor game design can result in titles that are filled with repetitive tasks and other forms of tiresome bloat. Nevertheless, when the developers get it right, as is the case with the above titles, they provide some of the best gaming experiences available.

There has been plenty of speculation about whether MapleStory N would even see the light of day, but it is finally going to be available, and fans will be able to enjoy the spin-off pretty soon.
Some sources even believed that the project might have been cancelled, but we now have an official launch date. However, the upcoming NFT-based title won't be available in many major nations of the world.
How does MapleStory N work?
The core formula of MapleStory N will be pretty similar to the original MapleStory game. It will be a side-scrolling MMORPG involving a robust player trading system. The game will use its AvalancheL1 facility to establish and complete the trades. Hence, there won't be an in-game shop at all. Players will have to trade with one another directly if they're looking to exchange assets.
To ensure the general safety of the transactions, the game will use built-in anti-cheat software that uses AvaCloud's security system. This is meant to ensure that players can play and trade without the risks of financial fraud.
You can expect to enjoy the joys of RPG and grind for valuable rewards. The ownership of NFTs will be entirely determined by the player-based community, which will also drive the overall demand and supply. Rewards can be earned by completing quests, defeating enemies, and more.
![]()
Can you pre-download MapleStory N?
As of 5am UTC/1am EDT, the game is available for pre-download in the available regions. To download, you'll have to go to the official website. You'll also require a MapleStory Universe web wallet. This wallet will be required for both pre-downloading and playing the game.
Is MapleStory N available in the US?
MapleStory N isn't going to be available in the US. It's also unavailable in major Asian markets like Japan and Korea, along with most of Europe. In fact, the restriction list has 50 countries, based on an earlier post related to the game's official terms and conditions.
However, accessibility could increase in the future if the developers manage to launch in more nations. As of writing, there's no indication that the game will be available in the US at the time of launch. The use of VPNs to bypass geo-restrictions is highly inadvisable, and it can result in financial losses in the worst-case scenario.
MapleStory N release date
The new game connected to the MapleStory Universe is launching worldwide on May 15, launching exclusively on PC for the time being, but there are plans for a mobile client to appear in the future.

The Fortnite Star Wars Galactic Battle season has brought plenty of unique gameplay features to the island. One of the more complex systems is Alignment, and it's a crucial one to understand.
This system is a great way to earn XP and unlock special gameplay effects and abilities you otherwise don't have access to. It ties in quite well with the overarching storyline present in all Star Wars content, too, so if you're a fan, you'll love this feature. Here's what Alignment is and how it works in Fortnite.
Table of contents
How does Alignment work in Fortnite Star Wars Galactic Battle?
![]()
Alignment essentially refers to the light side and dark side of the Force in Fortnite. These two battling paths are at the core of every Star Wars project, and they're now fundamental for shaping the abilities you have access to on the Fortnite island, too.
It's sort of similar to Outlaw Keycards and the hidden Black Market rooms from Chapter Six, season three, since all features related to it are not unlocked right away. Instead, they become available as the season progresses and players contribute progress to either side.
How to change your Alignment in Fortnite Star Wars Galactic Battle
You can change your Alignment by tackling specific Alignment quests for either the light side or the dark side. There are many quests for both sides, so there are lots of unique tasks you can work on. You'll also need to know how to progress your light and dark alignment.
All Alignment rewards in Fortnite Star Wars Galactic Battle
![]()
There are four Alignment rewards that have been unlocked so far. All four prizes are essentially upgrades to the services offered by characters around the map. Here's everything you need to know about all of the available rewards.
More Alignment rewards will likely become available as the season progresses since all of them unlock based on community progress. All future Alignment rewards are expected to be available with NPCs around the map, just as the ones already unlocked are. As any additional ones become available, we'll add them here.
![]()
Which Alignment should you choose in Fortnite Star Wars Galactic Battle?
As of May 15, the light side is by far the better Alignment to choose in Fortnite. This may change as the community goals progress and additional rewards become available, but for now, it's no contest.
The light side alignment has three rewards, all of which grant different helpful benefits. There's only one NPC who grants a dark side reward, and it drains your shields for health. This prize is dangerous and not really that helpful, so even if you're not interested in all three light side prizes, any one of them is better alone than the singular dark side ability. And since you get all three by progressing this track, the light side is certainly the best path to choose for now.
You may be worried about losing access to certain Force abilities or Lightsabers by choosing one path or another, since they're all tied to masters from both sides. All Force powers and Lightsabers remain available regardless of which side you choose, so the only difference between them is which new abilities you unlock.
Since there are additional updates planned that will likely bring more dark side NPCs and benefits to the island, I recommend working on both Alignments. Doing so ensures you get to earn the most XP possible and experience everything the Star Wars season has to offer. You'll also be able to quickly pivot for future dark side rewards. I've been working on both paths with no issues so far, so feel free to try the light side and the dark side if you aren't sure which one is right for you.

Mining is one of the most frequent tasks featured in every Star Path event in Disney Dreamlight Valley. Event duties often ask you to seek out specific types of Gems, like the mine for oval Gems task, and it can be a bit tricky to complete these.
There are over 40 Gems you can mine from around the Dreamlight Valley, Storybook Vale, and Eternity Isle. Sorting through all of them to figure out which ones qualify as oval can be pretty tricky, so here's how to mine for oval Gems in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
Table of contents
Which Gems are oval in Disney Dreamlight Valley?
![]()
Six Gems you can find around your village count as oval for this Star Path task. All of the special shiny versions of these Gems work too, if you happen to get lucky enough to find one of them instead.
Despite being the same shape as all other Gems that work for this task, Alexandrite doesn't count. There's nothing different about this specific Gem, but for some reason, it doesn't track for the Star Path duty.
Many other Gems might appear oval-shaped, especially if you look at them when dropped on the ground. Opal, for example, is quite round but doesn't count for this task. Focus only on the six Gems that count to get this one done.
Although you can find an array of Gems available for sale once you unlock Aladdin's stall, any Gems purchased from him won't count for this task. Mining is an essential part of it, so you must put in the work to collect the Gems required for this task yourself.
Mine for oval Gems in Disney Dreamlight Valley
![]()
To complete the mine for oval Gems duty for the Garden of Whimsy Star Path, you need to mine a total of 20 Gems that count as oval. Not all Gems are oval, and many of them are categorized for the mine for square Gems task, so you must seek out the right ones to get this task done.
Completing this task gets you 25 Tokens to spend in the Star Path event. It's the maximum amount you can get for finishing one task, so although this one can take a bit to get done, it's certainly worth doing. If you need more Tokens for the event, consider giving any restaurateur in the valley their favorite gifts, chatting with a curious young villager, and digging up a root vegetable with many eyes.

The Precinct offers a whole array of different vehicles you can use as an officer to move around the city.
As of writing, there are three main categories of vehicles you'll come across. We'll give you the necessary details about all of them, along with certain unlock conditions associated with some. There's already a wide set of options available in the game, and more could be added as part of future updates.
Table of contents
All vehicle categories in The Precinct
There are three categories of vehicles currently available in the game.
Out of the three types, ACPD vehicles require you to reach certain ranks before you can access them. There are no such issues with Civilian or Emergency vehicles. It's also easy to identify the ACPD vehicles, as they have the typical Police text, along with the blue and white livery.

Here's the full list of civilian vehicles available inside the game.
All vehicles apart from the Commandeered are rare vehicles and getting them all is going to complete he Hidden in the Hood achievement.
All emergency vehicles in The Precinct
So far, there's only one emergency vehicle in the game, which is the Ambulance. More could be added later as part of future updates. If we get new vehicles in the game, they will be added to the list based on their categories.
How to complete the 'We'll Pay for the Damage' achievement in The Precinct?
The "We'll Pay for the Damage" achievement can be completed by commandeering every vehicle that are available in the game. This achievement will take some time to complete, since a few vehicles only unlock after reaching certain levels.

When you first join The Precinct, earning XP can be a slow and steady process. But there are a few ways you can claim them faster and get closer to the Employee of the Day trophy.
We've got a few techniques to help you rack up 10,000 XP in a single shift.
How to acquire 10,000 XP in a single shift in The Precinct
For the Employee of the Day trophy, longer shifts might seem like the safest bet to avoid running out of time. But after testing it myself, I found you can go into overtime and keep completing tasks, providing you with XP even after your shift technically ends. That means you can choose any shift length and free roam, though there's a slight penalty for going into unsanctioned overtime. If you want to skip the penalty altogether, customized shifts are your best option, running up to 24 hours for maximum flexibility.
Once you're ready to start your day, you can earn XP as usual by catching perps and issuing tickets. While this method works, it won't rack up points quickly, so you must pair it with other objectives to hit that 10,000 XP goal. Completing Time Trials (clock icon) and Races (flag icon) are the fastest methods, each awarding around 500 to 750 XP for a Gold rank. Reaching Gold can be challenging, but with practice, you'll master each route and refine your strategy. If you're struggling to hit Gold, don't worry. Bronze and Silver ranks are still within reach and offer a solid XP payout.
![]()
Time Trials are the fastest to complete, usually taking about a minute, while Races offer much higher XP rewards. You can restart any challenge via the main menu whenever a run isn't going your way. This gives you more control over your performance and a better chance at earning top ranks.
Any time you complete a Time Trial or Race, you'll typically find another nearby. The downside is once you've earned Gold, you can't repeat the same challenge for more XP. Fortunately, there are about 20 challenges in total, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to earn points. Just be sure to grab any emergency objectives like robberies or vandalism that pop up during your shift to maximize your XP intake. But I strongly recommend steering clear of any story-related missions for now, as these tasks can prematurely cut your day short. It took me a few hours to hit the target, so be prepared to put in time and effort. You can track your XP progress in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
![]()
After you've hit 10,000, head back to the precinct to claim your Employee of the Day trophy. This will give your rank a considerable boost, unlocking new vehicles, equipment, and upgrades. You'll also likely unlock the On Top Form achievement, which is earned by snagging first place on the Shift scoreboard—another trophy for your collection. If you want to earn more The Precinct trophies, check out our guides on all rare cars and plaque locations.
