Interview: Preparing the FFVII Ever Crisis Academy Event

Square Enix surprised us by turning a Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis April Fools' Day 2025 joke into a full alternate universe (AU) high school themed event called FFVII Ever Crisis Academy Seven: Episode - Brawler. Siliconera was able to briefly talk to Producer Shoichi Ichikawa about the storyline and characters, as well as how the event came to be.

Jenni Lada: How did you come up with the concept for the Ever Crisis Academy Seven FFVII Ever Crisis high school AU scenario? Did you always know it would be a real event?

Shoichi Ichikawa:  Initially, it came from the younger members of the development team who voiced their desire to do a school-themed event.

One of the strengths of this title lies in its unique standing as a Live Ops game that takes on new endeavors that would be difficult to achieve in the original FFVII, such as seasonal events and gear, so we consulted [Tetsuya] Nomura-san and made this idea a reality.

For the story, we first worked on a single illustration, and from there, the two base concepts were formed: "Midgard Seventh High School," a high school for delinquents where Cloud and his group belongs, and "Shinra Private Academy," an elite school where Sephiroth and his group belongs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgEQwyt4B0c&ab_channel=SquareEnix

How did you determine which characters would participate in the Ever Crisis Academy Seven FFVII Ever Crisis high school event?

Ichikawa: We started with the three characters Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa, and gradually expanded the concept as we mused, "If Barret is a part of it, then perhaps he'd be like..." For Midgard Seventh High School, we picked characters who would be key players in the scenario, while Shinra Private Academy would be composed of members of Shinra.

Aerith gets to be a sukeban (a girl version of a Japanese bancho character and delinquent youth) as leader of Team Cetra in this FFVII Ever Crisis event. What led to this depiction of the heroine? And how did you decide to adjust her personality accordingly?

Ichikawa: This was a playful idea on the part of the staff.

Tifa is an honor student and Cloud/Zack are delinquents, so while we were wondering what we should do with Aerith, the art team proposed a rough sketch of Aerith as a sukeban.

It was visually impactful but also showed a side that was very Aerith-like, such as her fondness for flowers, and we thought we could depict the relationship between Zack and Aerith that is unique to this world setting.

Interview: Preparing the FFVII Ever Crisis Academy Event
Screenshot by Siliconera

A few characters, such as Cid, Vincent, and Yuffie, ended up left out for this Ever Crisis Academy FFVII Ever Crisis scenario. Were there any ideas for them that didn't make it into the final event?

Ichikawa: Yes, there were many different ideas. I am hoping that we will be able to introduce other characters in some form in the future as well.

Do you have any messages about the future of the game?

Ichikawa: Thank you for playing Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis!

We are truly encouraged to see everyone enjoying the game and posting on social media.

This time, we took on the endeavor of developing Ever Crisis Academy Seven, consisting of content that would be quite a challenge to realize in the original FFVII.

We will continue to develop new content and explore various themes for Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, so please keep an eye out for future updates.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available for the PC and mobile devices, and the FFVII Ever Crisis Academy Seven high school AU event and banners will run until May 28, 2025.

Schedule 1 dead drop

Throughout your Schedule 1 playthrough, you'll visit a lot of Dead Drop supply boxes. Whether buying weed seeds or ingredients for making late-game substances, you'll frequently purchase supplies and pick them up from these spots.

Although you may have noticed a few while running around, you likely won't encounter every Dead Drop box until you approach the end of your playthrough. Nonetheless, knowing where each one is located can help you plan future routes.

Schedule 1 Dead Drop map locations

Here's a complete list of every Dead Drop location around Schedule 1's map:

Schedule 1 dead drop map locations updated
Screenshot by Destructoid

  1. Near Westville Apartment's second room
  2. Behind Top Tattoo
  3. Behind Westville's Gas-Mart
  4. Under the west bridge
  5. Behind the Motel office
  6. North of the Skatepark
  7. Along Taco Ticklers' northern wall
  8. Behind Thompson Construction & Demo
  9. Behind Northtown's Arcade
  10. Along the Pawn Shop's west wall
  11. Between the Laundromat and Warehouse
  12. South of Slop Shop
  13. Behind the Body Shop
  14. On the east side of the Central Canal
  15. Along the Casino's west wall
  16. Attached to the apartment building south of the Parking Garage
  17. On the corner of the Supermarket
  18. Along Crimson Canary and Butter Box's east walls
  19. Behind Hyland Medical
  20. On Town Hall fountain
  21. Between the Courthouse and Hyland Bank
  22. Along the Fire Station's east wall near Handy Hank's Hardware
  23. Along the inner walls of a grey Docks building
  24. Behind Randy's Bait and Tackle shop
  25. On the southern gazebo's floor

Westville Apartment

Schedule 1 dead drop at Westville apartments
Screenshot by Destructoid

Starting from Westville on the westernmost side of Hyland Point, you'll find a Dead Drop box next to the brown apartment building's second room. You'll spot it on the wall as a box with an "X" above it.

Top Tattoo

Schedule 1 dead drop behind Top Tattoo
Screenshot by Destructoid

Westville has another Dead Drop box behind Top Tattoo. Between Top Tattoo and an apartment building is a tight alleyway with skull graffiti, debris, and the Dead Drop box for you to open. Thankfully, this one is far from passersby and police, but it's also especially dark if you travel at night.

Westville Gas-Mart

Schedule 1 dead drop at gas-mart
Screenshot by Destructoid

The last of Westville's Dead Drop boxes is behind Gas-Mart. As you approach the Gas-Mart, run behind its metal fence to access the box and any of its contents.

West Bridge

Schedule 1 dead drop under the west bridge
Screenshot by Destructoid

Just before running into Northtown, head under the west bridge connecting it to Westville to find another Drop Box. Just be careful if you're performing deals under here, as the cops are surprisingly good at noticing your presence even if they're on top of the bridge.

Motel Office

Schedule 1 dead drop at the motel office
Screenshot by Destructoid

It's time to return to one of our beginning spots, the Motel. More specifically, you'll head behind the Motel office building to spot another Dead Drop box.

Skatepark

Schedule 1 Skatepark dead drop
Screenshot by Destructoid

The early-game Dead Drop locations don't stop there. Right in front of the motel is a skatepark, with another box along its outer wall. Don't worry—you won't find any others inside the park itself.

Taco Ticklers

Schedule 1 Taco Ticklers dead drop box
Screenshot by Destructoid

Before running in to grab a taco, it's time to claim our supplies from Taco Ticklers' Dead Drop box. You'll find this stash by running behind the restaurant until you find the Dead Drop container on the wall near a green dumpster.

Thompson Construction & Demo

Schedule 1 dead drop by Thompson construction site

The next one is a little tricky to spot when you first start playing Schedule 1. The Thompson Construction & Demo Dead Drop box is along a brick wall directly north of its map location, which you can access using a walkway connected to the Motel area.

Arcade

Schedule 1 arcade dead drop
Screenshot by Destructoid

Did you know that there's an arcade next to the Fat Dragon Chinese restaurant in Schedule 1? I didn't either until a few hours after I unlocked the restaurant's living space. If you circle behind the arcade to where the white pickup truck is, you'll spot the Dead Drop box against the building's back wall.

Pawn Shop

Schedule 1 dead drop at the pawn shop
Screenshot by Destructoid

Did you know you can sell old gear at the Pawn Shop? Inside the Pawn Shop is Mick, who'll buy old equipment from you. More importantly, the Dead Drop is to the right of the store's entrance, just around the corner.

Laundromat

Schedule 1 Laundromat dead drop
Screenshot by Destructoid

There's an interesting spot between the Warehouse and businesses like the Laundromat and Thrifty Threads. The path here is a great escape route at night, but it also helps connect you to the Docks if you don't feel like traveling along the main road. Your next Dead Drop box is behind the Laundromat along the lower-level wall.

Slop Shop

Schedule 1 dead drop box near Slop Shop
Screenshot by Destructoid

As you travel down one of the main roads past POIs like Taco Ticklers, the parking garage, and the Laundromat, you'll spot a diner known as Slop Shop. Behind it is an apartment building in which several NPCs live, with a Dead Drop box on the corner closest to the Hyland Police Station.

Body Shop

Schedule 1 body shop dead drop
Screenshot by Destructoid

Next up is the Body Shop's Dead Drop box. You'll find the Body Shop directly south of Slop Shop. While a metal fence will seemingly block access to it, you can easily open it through its holes without much issue.

Central Canal

Schedule 1 central canal stash
Screenshot by Destructoid

Remember at the beginning of Schedule 1's story when you had to pick up money from Uncle Nelson? You had three Dead Drops to visit, with the central canal stash being one of the most difficult to spot. You'll find this one in the town center near the eastern Gas-Mart, Hyland Auto, and Hyland Police Station.

Casino

Schedule 1 casino drop box
Screenshot by Destructoid

Next up is the Casino. Rather than circling to the front, approach it as if you're coming from the Motel until you pass the parking garage and red storage container. You'll find the Dead Drop box close to its corner.

Apartment south of the Parking Garage

Schedule 1 dead drop at the apartment below parking garage
Screenshot by Destructoid

Your next destination is the apartment directly south of the parking garage. Both of these locations are near the casino and supermarket. The apartment appears as a large brown building with a Dead Drop box on its northeastern corner.

Supermarket

Schedule 1 Supermarket dead drop
Screenshot by Destructoid

The Supermarket Dead Drop box is the second of the three you'll find during Uncle Nelson's introductory quest. It's very close to the Central Canal box, requiring you to travel north from it and turn left after passing the Supermarket. Turning left again will lead you to its back wall, where you'll encounter the next Dead Drop stash.

Crimson Canary

Schedule 1 dead drop behind Crimson Canary
Screenshot by Destructoid

Next on the list is the Dead Drop box alongside the eastern walls of The Crimson Canary and The Butter Box. Both spots are directly north of the Town Hall, with its Dead Drop stash on the wall near two dumpsters and some purple graffiti.

Hyland Medical

Schedule 1 dead drop behind Hyland Medical
Screenshot by Destructoid

There are two types of players: those who are at Hyland Medical once a day, and those who are never here because they refuse to get into fights. Either way, traveling far east into Hyland past the Town Hall and the bank will bring you to the medical center. The Dead Drop is behind the building.

Town Hall fountain

Schedule 1 fountain dead drop box
Screenshot by Destructoid

The Town Hall fountain is the last of Uncle Nelson's introductory stashes. After finding the Central Canal and Supermarket Dead Drops, head toward the center of town until you find a brown-orange brick building with a fountain in front of it. The Dead Drop box is along the bottom of the fountain.

Courthouse and Hyland Bank

Schedule 1 Courthouse dead drop
Screenshot by Destructoid

There's a strong possibility you've never visited Hyland Bank or the Courthouse before. Don't worry; I haven't either. The only time you'll need to check this spot out is to interact with the Dead Drop box attached to the bank's southern wall.

Fire Station

Schedule 1 Fire Station dead drop
Screenshot by Destructoid

The Fire Station across the street from Hyland Medical has a similar Dead Drop stash location. This time, run around the building until you're between it and Handy Hank's Hardware. The Dead Drop is along the wall underneath a window.

Docks houses

Schedule 1 Docks dead drop box
Screenshot by Destructoid

It's rare to find a Dead Drop box on someone's house unless it also acts as a business. This Docks Dead Drop box is an exception, as it is situated right next to someone's front door. As you enter the Docks, turn left toward the first house you see to spot this box next to a blue door and a Cuke machine.

Randy's Bait and Tackle

Schedule 1 Randy's Bait and Tackle dead drop box
Screenshot by Destructoid

The second Docks Dead Drop is right behind Randy's Bait and Tackle shop at the end of the area. As you travel down the road, look out for a green rusted building and go behind it to spot its Dead Drop box.

South Gazebo

Schedule 1 gazebo dead drop box
Screenshot by Destructoid

The last dead drop on this list is located at the bottom of Schedule 1's map. You'll find Suburbia's houses and a gazebo with a Dead Drop box on its floor. It's a long trek over here but a necessary struggle if you need some pseudo or Coca seeds.

Schedule 1 Supplier Stash map locations

Schedule 1 Supplier Dead Drop stash map locations
Screenshot by Destructoid

Dead Drop boxes aren't the only stash units you'll find around Schedule 1's map. If you're buying weed seeds or product manufacturing ingredients from your suppliers, you'll need to toss them some cash in their personal stashes. Below is a list of every supplier and their personal Dead Drop locations:

  1. Behind Dan's Hardware (Albert's Stash)
  2. Along the Warehouse's west wall (Shirley's Stash)
  3. Behind the Church (Salvador's Stash)

While Albert's and Shirley's are right in Northtown, Salvador's requires traveling up to the church near the Barn to access his drop. Considering he sells late-game ingredients, though, this makes sense. By that point in the game, you'll likely have cars, a skateboard, or enough free time to run around and collect everything you need.

Although the maps above have every Dead Drop and Supplier Stash you'll ever need, you can also check out our complete Schedule 1 map to learn more about other key locations in greater detail.

We are into the final week of May, and you know what that means? We are just over a week until Switch 2 finally launches worldwide (if you were lucky enough to get a pre-order, that is.)

With the system coming out and a lot of the Destructoid community picking one up, I wanted to ask you, the reader, what games you plan to pick up for your system at launch within the first week to truly test out the system—or if you aren't getting it, feel free to comment why you aren't getting the system at all.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9flte56erE8&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

I imagine a lot you will be getting Mario Kart World, as that feels like a given considering the cheaper console bundle that includes a digital version of the game, as well as it being a flagship Nintendo title every generation. Though I have to ask if you don't plan to get Mario Kart World, please tell me why in the comments, as I truly have no idea why you would get this system on launch and not pick up that game.

Outside of that, though, what else is there until other games come out throughout the rest of 2025?

There are a few good third-party offerings, sure, but nothing that screams "I need the Nintendo Switch 2 for this" at all. In fact, let me leave you with some of the launch lineup for those who aren't even aware what it is, and you can use it to help in your decision-making.

  • Mario Kart World
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour
  • Deltarune Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4
  • Split Fiction
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition
  • Street Fighter 6 - Official Years 1-2 Edition
  • Sid Meier's Civilization VII - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster
  • Yakuza 0 Director's Cut
  • Fortnite

Again, these are only a fraction of the wider pool of games available. So I implore you, Destructoid, to tell me in the comments below what you are picking up day one, and why?

A player character after being defeated by bandits in Kenshi.

Do you like games that crush your soul through sheer difficulty? Do you like games that reward your persistence and give you a massive endorphin boost when you finally overcome the hurdles and feel all-powerful?

I have the perfect game for you. I've never enjoyed overly difficult games. I play games to relax, not spike my blood pressure. But there is this one game you may not have heard about that's crushingly difficult, yet weirdly offers a relaxing experience at the same time. I know it seems nuts, but hear me out. This is Kenshi.

You aren't 'The Chosen One'

A new character in Kenshi
Weak. Screenshot by Destructoid

Kenshi is a game in which you take control of a number of the world's laziest people. I say this because when you start, your team has zero skills. Nothing, nada. Yet, they're fully-grown adults. So they've successfully avoided any and all forms of skill-building up until the moment you arrive in the world.

You quite literally start at rock bottom, and even the wimpiest bandit out there will absolutely wipe the floor with your squad. I'm talking about a 1v5 against a 90-pound severely starting bandit, and your five heroes will end up as bleeding heaps on the ground.

If you don't have a first aid kit or no one in your team regains consciousness long enough to bandage you all up, that's it, game over. It just ends, and you're left staring at a world in which you no longer play a part. Unless, of course, a slaver team passes by, in which case you'll likely end up working the pits of Rebirth, a slave-labor settlement in the game.

Imprisoned characters in Kenshi
Screenshot by Destructoid

Ironically, working the pits of Rebirth is kind of a blessing, because it gives you the opportunity to build your skills in a locale where you're not able to die of starvation. If you try to escape and fail, though, death is a very real possibility there as well. You can also lose limbs. Lose a leg here, and your playthrough is pretty much done. Escaping a slave camp isn't easy when you can sprint, it's impossible when all you can do is crawl.

The opening hours of this game are brutal. You're constantly being beaten down by anything on a whim. And you'd better hope you don't run into Bone Dogs while transporting your hard-earned copper, or you've just become lunch for the local wildlife. Which, while we're on the topic, is also actively trying to hunt and eat you.

Not getting eaten is quite the achievement

Skin Spiders walking across the wasteland in Kenshi
Screenshot by Destructoid

Depending on where you start your playthrough, your early game won't contain too much threat from wildlife. It's only once you start to explore the world that you run into all manner of things. Bone Dogs are the tamest of the beasties, because you also get Skin Spiders, Blood Spiders, Gorillos, and more. Each of these animals will beat you to a pulp, and all except the Gorillos will eat you afterwards, but none are more feared than the infamous Beak Thing.

A Beak Thing against the sunrise in Kenshi.
Terrifying. Screenshot by Destructoid

Unless you have top-quality robotic legs (that's a thing), you won't be outrunning a Beak Thing, ever. Your only choice is to either stand and fight and potentially lose your whole squad, or sacrifice one or two while the rest make their escape.

And then you have mods, and the manner of creatures that can find their way into your game are the stuff of nightmares. Let's not even go there. I'm still haunted by the time a single mutated skin spider chopped off half my squad's limbs in a 1v8 fight.

The turning point is the most satisfying thing

High-level characters showing off their muscles in Kenshi
Screenshot by Destructoid

By this point in the game, you're so used to getting your butt whooped by everything and running from all but the weakest bandits, that it's just habit now. And then something strange happens. Your squad gets into a fight while you're preoccupied elsewhere, and you return to find bleeding heaps on the ground—but this time, they're not yours. Your group of outcasts and misfits actually won a fight.

This series of victories can go on for quite some time as you become bolder, explore more, and discover that all those ass whoopings actually paid off. You no longer have a team of starving beggars and mine workers, you have a group of competent fighters.

That is, until you happen upon a particularly scary group known as the Skin Bandits. And this is where many a playthrough ends abruptly.

You see, these Skin Bandits are incredibly powerful, quick to recover, and have a seemingly endless supply of troops. Knock them down, they get back up. But when they knock you down, they hastily scoop you up and transport you back to their base.

You're then placed in what is known as a peeler. Skin Bandits. Peeler. I bet I don't have to go into more detail there.

But this is around the point when you take what you've learned and try it all again. After a while, things just start to click, and the next time you meet the skin bandits, things aren't so easy for them. And so the cycle continues, and it never really gets old.

Kenshi's success is surprising

A player-created village in Kenshi.
A player-created village. Screenshot by Destructoid

It always surprises me when I talk about Kenshi, and others don't know about the game. It's old, sure, having been around since 2014 and finally officially launched in 2018. But still, this game went on to sell over two million copies.

It's a niche game, but at the same time has outsold far bigger studios. Which reminds me, this game was made by one guy. Others eventually joined the team to complete the game, but most of the framework was created by Chris Hunt.

If you're a fan of Kenshi, you'll be happy to know that Chris and team have been hard at work on Kenshi 2, and boy, am I excited.

Should you play Kenshi, or wait for Kenshi 2?

As my final thoughts, I'll give you all you need to know on whether you should actually play Kenshi. The answer is yes. Everyone should give this game a go. That said, if you've only ever played FPS games and can't stand anything else, then maybe you shouldn't.

Kenshi is mostly an RPG Strategy Sandbox game. There is no story you have to follow, nor do you have to unlock anything, or even discover the game's lore. It's all entirely up to you how you go about playing this game. So if you prefer heavily directed stories, again, pass.

However, if you prefer to create your own stories, your own characters and their backgrounds, and really flex your creative muscles in a way that few other games allow, then Kenshi is absolutely, most definitely for you.

Oh, and as we approach $80 games, this one goes for $30 and under, with regional pricing making it way more affordable in certain locations. So go ahead, spoil yourself. And no, this was not a sponsored post, merely a look back at one of the best sandbox games I've ever played.

Have you played Kenshi? Tell your story in the comments—if there's one thing the Kenshi community enjoys, it's hearing the stories of other Kenshi players!
