Demon's Souls Review — The Beginning is the End
Nearly four years ago when I first joined DualShockers, I wouldn't have ever considered calling the Souls series my favorite franchise in all of gaming. At that point in 2017 I had only ever played Bloodborne, which I adored, but the Dark Souls trilogy and its predecessor weren't games I had dug into yet. As I continued on here at DualShockers, I slowly worked my way through all other entries in the series over the years, growing to love them more and more with each installment (except for you, Dark Souls 2). That said, the original granddaddy that started off the whole genre in Demon's Souls was still a title that had escaped my grasp due to it being essentially stranded on PS3.
In what is now my final week at DualShockers, having my final review with the site be for Bluepoint's remake of Demon's Souls just feels right. It's a game that isn't only fantastic in nearly all areas, but it has helped validate my decision to purchase a PS5 on day one. Perhaps most importantly, however, it has been a game that I have strangely found a lot of solace in while playing given my own current state of life.
Likely the most incredible part of this new Demon's Souls comes with just how perfectly Bluepoint has been able to recreate the original game. Even though I'm not someone who had ever played the first installment all the way on PS3, I'm pretty intimately familiar with it. To see all of those iconic locations and bosses remade with a fresh coat of paint has been stunning, to say the least. Even though it has been somewhat divisive with a few longtime fans, Bluepoint was also able to add far more detail to each environment and character model compared to what FromSoftware could do in the past, and I think it makes the entire game look that much more unique.
This level of expertise when it comes to the game's quality as a remake extends to the gameplay, too. A lot of people don't trust anyone but FromSoftware to work on these games, but nothing has been lost whatsoever when it comes to the moment-to-moment action within Demon's Souls. The game controls exactly like you remember it and doesn't feel aged whatsoever.
Even beyond just mirroring FromSoftware's original game to a T, Bluepoint has also gone above and beyond to add a number of smaller aspects to the game that further flesh out its world and the lore behind it. To be honest, I would have never noticed half of these things on my own. But those who are way more invested in the Souls scene than I am have spotted some truly incredible nuggets that a majority of players will probably never find. Basically, just go watch VaatiVidya's latest video on the game if you want to be even more astounded by Bluepoint.
All of these elements combined with what the PlayStation 5 now allows for makes Demon's Souls one of the best titles to showcase the next-gen console. The game allows for both performance or resolution modes, with the former running at 60fps. Regardless of which option you choose, however, Demon's Souls is far and away one of the best games you can check out on a console right now. Every environment contains a stunning level of detail all brought about with crystal clear clarity. And even on the performance side of things, I can't remember ever seeing my resolution drop while playing. I previously asserted a few years back that Bluepoint's Shadow of the Colossus remake was perhaps one of the prettiest games I had ever seen, and Demon's Souls absolutely now joins that list.
Without question though, the greatest benefit that the PS5 has brought to Demon's Souls comes with the near-nonexistent load times that are present. This is something that we'll be seeing a whole lot more of in games in the future, but I still could not get over just how remarkable it is to no longer have to start a 30-second or longer loading screen after every death. Even more so than the higher fidelity graphics, the lack of load times continues to be my favorite feature with next-gen titles.
For the most part, the other thing I'm impressed by with Demon's Souls is just how well it has stood up in the eleven years since it first launched. You could have told me in a vacuum that this isn't a remake of a game from 2009 and was instead the fourth Dark Souls entry newly-released in 2020 and I would believe you. To say that Demon's Souls was ahead of its time is to put things lightly.
I also have to say that as someone who is coming into Demon's Souls after having already played all previous Soulsborne titles, the structure of the game really stands out quite a bit to this day. The five worlds in Demon's Souls all have their own unique vibe and style, both aesthetically and thematically. I also love that after beating the game's first proper stage, you can proceed to go about completing the remainder of Demon's Souls in any manner that you choose. While sure, some levels will be more difficult for lower-leveled characters, the fact that you have the freedom to jump between worlds whenever you'd like keeps things from feeling stale, especially if you have found yourself beating your head against a wall in one specific area.
If there is one element of Demon's Souls that I just still do not love though, it would be the game's World Tendency system. World Tendency, for better or worse, is something that has an impact on nearly everything you do in Demon's Souls. In simplest terms, World Tendency can cause changes in the world around you depending on how many times you die or don't die in your human form. To that effect, some items, pathways, and other locations in each given world might be open or closed depending on what your current World Tendency state is.
While it's very much like FromSoftware to implement a system like this, it also just proves to be a drag more often than not. The fact that the game doesn't really detail the finer ins and outs of World Tendency doesn't help, either. As a first time player, I had to spend a lot of time reading up on the system and all of the larger effects that it can have on your Demon's Souls experience. I like that these games are often ones where the community has to work together to figure everything out, but World Tendency itself should at least be something that Demon's Souls teaches to players a bit more than it does. Let's just say that I'm glad this element never made its way into the Dark Souls series.
When it comes to the overall difficulty of Demon's Souls, I think it's equal parts one of the hardest and easiest games within the genre. The difficult aspect of the games comes with how you'll receive a semi-permanent cut to your health part if you ever die while in human form. The only way to then regain your human form is to defeat a boss or use a specific item that will restore your body. Still, seeing your health bar constantly being cut in half whenever you perish is something that grates on you, particularly in the game's early hours, and it makes those initial stages far more difficult than may other Soulslikes already are.
That being said, I have to say that the bosses definitely leave something to be desired in Demon's Souls, especially compared to what has come about in the decade since its release. Some standout baddies like Flamelurker, the Maneaters, and Storm King are among the more enjoyable bouts you'll engage in, but a number of the other battles you'll come across in the game prove to be a cakewalk assuming you've got a well-defined character build. The lack of a true final boss also exasperates this point even more. I wouldn't call any of the bosses in Demon's Souls "bad" necessarily, but the full cast also isn't too memorable.
Demon's Souls is an excellent game; I'm not the first person to tell you that in the last ten years. Bluepoint's remake here on PS5 is also in line with the studio's previous work, which is to say that it's immaculate. If you already own Sony's next-gen hardware, this is very much its killer app thus far. I implore you to make this your first Soulslike if you've never set foot into the genre before.
More than anything though, Demon's Souls has allowed me to reflect a lot the past few weeks on my own personal life and where I'm heading. Despite my next career destination not being much of a far cry from what I have done here at DualShockers for the past four years, Demon's Souls has shown me once again that familiarity doesn't mean that a challenge still can't be present. Much like this series of games has taught me over the years, satisfaction in your work and accomplishments is often one that is a result of the strife that you have to go through along the way. And to that end, I'm excited to see what challenges lie in wait for me in the future.
I've had a great time here at DualShockers and I'll never forget this period of my life. Thank you for reading my work and being one of the best communities around throughout my tenure. Umbasa.

PS5 Owner Throws Console Into a Shredder as Part of an "Experiment"
Since the PlayStation 5's release last month on November 12, gamers all over the world have been trying to get their hands on one, and some without much success. Even though it has been Sony's biggest console release to date in the UK, scalpers still managed to get their grubby little mitts all over them by scooping up more than 3,500 of the hard to find systems leaving genuine consumers at a loss. To make matters even worse, one Youtuber has decided to record themselves placing a PS5 into a shredder just for the hell of it and watching it being crushed to pieces.
Captain Crunch, a YouTuber who makes videos by crushing everything from an iPhone 12 to the PlayStation 4, has now gone a step further by taking their much-sought after PS5 and destroying every part of it from the box, controller and right down to the console itself until there's nothing but little pieces of it left. It's a pretty hard to watch video especially if you're one of the folks who have been busting their butts off to try and get one and saving your pennies all year. To add fuel to the already burning fire, Captain Crunch states below the video to "Play more outside, less inside on your computer." If your eyes haven't already rolled hard into your head, that comment will surely do it.
As much as I understand the enjoyment that people have in watching objects get ground to a pulp, I can't help but think of the many positive ways this YouTuber could've supported different charities in need by giving the console to the likes of Get Well Gamers, a charity dedicated to bringing electronic entertainment to children's hospitals, hospices and other facilities for the benefit of entertainment and pain relief. Understandably, the video hasn't been too popular with viewers and at this time of writing, it has received 3.6k downvotes massively outweighing the 845 upvotes. By the end of Captain Crunch's video that he calls an "experiment", the PS5 can be seen shredded to absolutely nothing but plastic and metal.
If you can stomach it, you can watch the video for yourself below but if you happen to have your very own PS5 in the same room with you, it's probably best you cover it over before pressing play!
To see some productive and creative ways in how you can treat your PS5, check out this article where people have removed their PS5 outer plates to customize the look of their consoles to great effect. We also learned recently that the PS5's DualSense controller has amazed Microsoft's, Phil Spencer. In an interview with The Verge, Phil stated that he "applauds" what Sony has done with the controller and thinks that "We should learn from each other and the innovation that we all push on, whether it's distribution of business model like Game Pass, or controller tech, or the Wii back in the day, which clearly had an impact on us when we went off and did Kinect and Sony did the Move."

Full Metal Panic x Voltes V Crossing Pilot Event Revealed in Super Robot Wars DD
Bandai Namco is holding the December 2020 edition of the usual Nama Suparobo Channel stream, the official streams of the Super Robot Wars series, and we learned Full Metal Panic is having a Crossing Pilot event with Voltes V.
Producer Takanobu Terada explained how they thought up this crossover. The main reason is none of the crossovers till now used a mecha with multiple pilots. After discussing it they ended up deciding on Full Metal Panic characters piloting Voltes V. Since Sousuke is always acting as a team with Melissa and Kurz, they're the first three pilots. There are 5 seats in Voltes V though. The fourth pilot is Tessa as seen in the trailer. However, the fifth pilot will only be revealed in the event itself. It's highly likely to be Kaname though.
Producer Terada jokingly shared Sousuke's seiyuu Tomokazu Seki knew perfectly how to imitate Kenichi's way of saying the attacks. Without directions.
The Crossover Event will be supervised by Full Metal Panic author Shoji Gatoh and written by Nakagawa, the scenarist of SRW BX and Full Metal Panic Fight Who Dares Win.
Full Metal Panic characters piloting Voltes V is the fourth Crossing Pilot event in Super Robot Taisen DD. The previous Crossing Pilot events were: Gundam's Amuro Ray piloting Mazinger Z. Code Geass' Lelouch piloting Wing Gundam Zero Rebellion. Super Robot Taisen original character Masaki Ando piloting Aura Battle Dunbine's Bilbine.
Getter Noire 2 with Hayato is joining Super Robot Wars DD as well with a new attack for the already included Getter Noire 1. OG character and mecha, Ryusei and the R-1, are joining the game as well. Producer Terada confirmed the new Ryusei artwork was drawn by Sachiko Kono.

Catan: Starfarers Adds Much-Requested 5-6 Player Extension Today
Catan: Starfarers launched last year and is widely regarded as an excellent reimagining of the 1999 classic Starfarers of Catan. That game, of course, is a spin-off version of base Catan that takes the board game to space. And, while reviews for 2019's Starfarers were solid, many fans were hoping to be able to upgrade to a 5-6 player version. The Catan team has good news for you today, as they're releasing just that. If you want to see everything included, give the official unboxing video a look below.
As you'd expect, the 5-6 Player Extension for Catan: Starfarers adds enough components for two more people to join in on the fun. That on its own is probably enough for many fans to slap $49 on the table. After all, adding more players to the fun will only make it easier to put big board game nights together once people are feeling safe to host those again.
However, that's far from the only thing the 5-6 Player Extension adds. Most excitingly, it adds a new turn-taking system that aims to increase player engagement and speed up turns. I don't know about you, but I often play games with slow-thinking friends. All of that downtime can get awfully boring after a while. This system looks to alleviate that by letting players do some actions while they wait on the player before them to make their moves. I've seen similar systems in other games and this seems like it will be a perfect fit for Catan gameplay.
And you don't have to wait long to try it out for yourself. Catan: Starfarers is available now on the Catan Shop. It does require the base game, but most people looking to pick this up likely already have it.

Destiny 2 Deep Stone Crypt Raid Completed by Over 250,000 Players in 10 Days
Bungie's online first-person shooter Destiny 2 has been popular for a while now, and since the arrival of the Xbox Series X / S and PS5, conversations surrounding the game seem to have increased. This is more than likely due to the new Beyond Light DLC that finds players heading to Europa on a new story. And shortly after the DLC, on November 21, players that were brave enough to try took part in the Deep Stone Crypt raid — and we've been given the numbers.
Deep Stone Crypt is a raid in Destiny 2 that took place on Europa, and it's usual for teams and clans of up to 6 players to form a fireteam in an attempt to be the first to beat the raid on day 1. This raid saw the Luminous clan become the first in the world to defeat it. Figures state that the race through the crypt was finished in 5 and a half hours. Additionally, 404,000 people tuned in on Twitch to watch the raid race that took part on day one.
Any Guardians that completed the raid by December 1 at 9am PST should have unlocked the ability to purchase a Bungie Rewards Deep Stone Crypt Raid Jacket. According to the figures, the Deep Stone Crypt raid alone saw 29,814 unique raid activity clears on the very first day.
Other figures take place over the 10 days, with 258,049 unique raid activity clears in total being recorded. Players had also played a total of 7,156,651 hours while racking up 1,100,488,566 kills, and with a total of 85,008,596 deaths.
For comparison, we have stats for the Last Wish raid and Garden of Salvation raid from the 10 days since those raids launched. Last Wish saw 3,555 unique raid activity clears, 2,185,983 total player hours, 338,667,495 kills, and 32,734,027 deaths.
For the Garden of Salvation, 33,152 unique raid activity clears were recorded, with 2,807,504 player hours, 446,461,881 total kills, and 42,676,699 deaths.
Bungie also saw over 979,680 Destiny 2 players unlock The Lament, an exotic quest in Beyond Light that finds players completing numerous steps to eventually unlock a beefy looking sword.
If you're wanting to jump into Destiny 2 it's available on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Google Stadia. It's available on Xbox Series X / S and PS5 as well with a next-generation upgrade planned to launch next week.

Zombie Land Saga Joins Super Robot Wars Cross Omega
Bandai Namco is holding the December 2020 edition of the usual Nama Suparobo Channel stream, the official streams of the Super Robot Wars series, and this time, we learned Zombie Land Saga is the newest addition in mobile game Cross Omega.
The mecha appearing in Zombie Land Saga, Saga The Great 7, was designed by Masami Obari, who appeared on stream. A pretty cool trailer introducing the series was published as well.
Moreover, the game on December 5 is also adding C.C. in her pink Lancelot and a combination attack with C.C. and Lelouch for Lelouch's birthday.

Gravion Zwei is also getting its second time-limited addition. With Sol Gravion and its ultimate move.
Zombie Land Saga first aired in October 2018. It features legendary idols resurrected as zombies to form the zombie idol group Franchouchou and promote Saga Prefecture in Japan. A sequel project titled Zombie Land Saga Revenge is also in development.
The stream is still ongoing. In particular, the second part of the stream will be a multiple hours long talk show with Super Robot Wars Producer Takanobu Terada and Scenarist Soichiro Morizumi. This is a follow up to the previous talk show. They'll most notably play Shin Super Robot Taisen together. We'll publish a summary at a later date.

The Game Awards Adds Gal Gadot and Brie Larson as Presenters
The Game Awards are now a little under a week away, taking place on December 10. Geoff Keighley's brainchild has been one of the top awards ceremonies in the games industry over the last few years, and while this year's ceremony will take place under some extremely different circumstances, the production is still likely to be of an extremely high standard, with plenty of exciting guest hosts.
Already confirmed for the ceremony is Tom Holland, who is playing treasure hunter Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted movie, which recently wrapped filming. Now, announced via Keighley's Twitter, are two more movie megastars who will be doubling as hosts at this year's awards.
First up, helping with the presenting duties is Gal Gadot, star of Wonder Woman. Following her, is another recognisable superhero in the form of Brie Larson, who's arguably best known for her role as Captain Marvel, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Next Thursday, we are excited to welcome @GalGadot, the star of the upcoming @WonderWomanFilm, as a presenter @thegameawards #TheGameAwards Streaming Live December 10. pic.twitter.com/PgjEgvFPpw
— Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) December 3, 2020
Larson is a huge video game fan herself. She is well documented as having a love for Animal Crossing and even appeared on Animal Talking, the talk show set inside that game. Over the last couple of years, she has also expressed an interest in playing bounty hunter Samus if there were ever to be a silver screen adaptation of Metroid.
The Nominees for the show are now live, with The Last of Us Part II, Hades and Final Fantasy VII Remake leading the charge with the most nominations. Competing with those titles for the top gong are Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Ghost of Tsushima and Doom Eternal.
Alongside a great awards show, the game awards is always a stellar place to get the latest information on upcoming games. Over the years we've had the announcement of Joker's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well as our first look at the Xbox Series X and this year is shaping up to be no different. Fall Guys has teased the first look at Season 3 during the ceremony and we'll also be getting a glimpse of the new Among Us map. There will also be a range of playable demos after the show.

Cyberpunk 2077 Will Have a 464-Page Strategy Guide Arriving at Launch
Now that we are counting down the days until Cyberpunk 2077's launch, fans are getting excited to finally get their hands on the game. CD Projekt Red has also now confirmed when the game will unlock across the world, and also information on when the game can be pre-loaded on PC, GOG, Stadia, PlayStation, and Xbox. If you're wondering when and where you can pick up an official Cyberpunk strategy guide that will also look pretty cool on your coffee table, Piggyback has you sorted out.
Their official Cyberpunk guides come in standard or collector's edition and it's also a whopping 464 pages long but if you fancy something a little longer, the collector's edition has even more pages coming in at 496 pages that also includes a visual tour of the Night City's unrestrained hospitality and leisure industries through a selection of images from poster and TV campaigns along with associated branding. The guide will give players walkthroughs of "annotated maps and visual insights on optional paths and interesting features."
The book also promises to give players "all the tools and all the resources at your disposal" with two dedicated chapters that go into all the key elements of the gameplay layout that produce "thousands of hours of research and analysis, supported by a direct channel to the CD Projekt Red dev team." Piggyback also noted on the site that "If you plan on plotting your own path through the game with a low level of assistance, this chart offers a spoiler-free presentation of when you can begin major story episodes and side missions."
As brushed upon previously, the strategy guides will launch alongside the release of Cyberpunk 2077 in two editions: the standard paperback edition which is 464 pages long and priced at $24.99 while the hardcover collector's edition is 496 pages long and comes in at $39.99 with some bonus extras. There's more info on the publisher's website, that includes where people can purchase it in the US, Canada, and Australia although, I don't currently see a way to purchase this if you live in Europe. Check out the official guide trailer below for a little more insight.
Cyberpunk 2077 announced that they are going to team up with Twitter Gaming for an event to celebrate the impending launch of the game, and if you fancy joining it will take place on December 9. With only a few days to go, CD Projekt Red tweeted out on Twitter asking those who already have the game, not to be naughty and stream it prior to its launch which, to be honest, is just common decency. The devs have also been sharing additional details on what to expect from their highly-anticipated RPG by outlining the photo mode feature that will let players capture and share their experiences in Night City, and also detailed that players will be able to turn off copyrighted music while streaming to avoid the chance of a video takedown.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be launching on December 10 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, PS4, PS5, and Google Stadia. Planned DLC and story expansions for the game are due to be announced next year. If you're still yet to pick the game up, you can pre-order it on your preferred platform on Amazon.

Cyberpunk 2077 Pre-Loading and Unlock Times Detailed
We're now officially under a week away from the launch of CD Projekt Red's highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077. A first-person RPG that features Keanu Reeves as a key story character. CD Projekt Red has now confirmed when the game will unlock across the world, and also information on when the game can be pre-loaded.
Let's start with the pre-loading. Customers who have pre-ordered the game digitally on PC will be able to pre-load the game starting from Monday, December 7. If you've ordered the game through GOG, you'll be able to start pre-loading at 12pm CET. For those on Steam and the Epic Games Store, you can start pre-loading at 5pm CET.
For those who have pre-ordered Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles digitally, Xbox orders are available to pre-load as of yesterday, December 3. For PlayStation, pre-loads start "2 days prior to the release date".
For those on PC and Stadia, it's detailed that Cyberpunk 2077 will fully unlock simultaneously across the world once the clock strikes 12am GMT on December 10. For those on console, it'll unlock and be available at midnight whatever your local time zone is.
To help with understanding the simultaneous unlock, CD Projekt Red provided a map as you can see below. So if we're sticking to US zones, the game will be available to play for PC and Stadia owners from 7pm EST / 4pm PST.
If you're interested, CD Projekt Red is holding a special Twitter Gaming launch event that takes place on December 9. The studio has also urged players who may be receiving physical copies early to avoid running streams and sharing footage before December 9, 12pm CET. It looks as if those who do will be faced with a DMCA takedown of sorts, with CDPR joking that "MAX-TAC" will go after anyone who does.

Batman: Arkham Knight Receives Free Update; Gifts 2 Skins From 2015
It may have been way back in 2015 that Rocksteady Studios released Batman: Arkham Knight, but that isn't stopping the studio from giving out skins for caped-superhero. In this case, players can expect to receive a free update that introduces two free skins, one of which looks rather…ew.
According to the announcement tweet, players have been asking for skins, and Rocksteady has decided to introduce the skins as part of a way to celebrate the holiday season. The skins aren't holiday-themed though. Player's will receive the Zur En Arrh skin and Anime Batman skin as a free update that is available now.
The Zur En Arrh skin looks positively hideous in my personal opinion and finds the iconic black cowl being paired with other parts of the costume that are pink and golden and looks like something resembling a wealthy salmon. The skin itself is based on the 1958 appearance in the Batman comic Issue #113 "Batman—The Superman of Planet-X!" In the story, Tlano, an alternative Batman from the planet Zur-En-Arrh, battles against robots and aliens alongside the classic Batman.
You asked, and we couldn't help but answer with a little gift just in time for the holiday season. From today, all Batman: Arkham Knight players can access the Zur En Arrh and Anime Batman skins via a free update. pic.twitter.com/6zdKt2ouWC
— Rocksteady Studios (@RocksteadyGames) December 3, 2020
The other skin is the Anime Batman that is more likely known from Batman: Gotham Knight and features a cowl that somehow looks more menacing and a more stylized cape. The suit appeared in the 2008 production directed by Yasuhiro Aoki, and Futoshi Higashide and saw Kevin Conroy as the voice of the hero. Conroy later went on to voice Batman in Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City, and also Batman: Arkham Knight.
It's worth noting that these skins aren't entirely new as they appeared in the game back in 2015 as a reward for logging into your Warner Brothers WBPlay account — That's according to IGN's guide from way back then and a news post from Gear Nuke.
However, given that that was years ago, I imagine the WBPlay support for the game has probably become out-of-date, or the time to unlock the rewards has now passed. Either way, players who missed out on getting these skins back in 2015 will be able to get them for free now by updating the game.
Batman: Arkham Knight is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The games are also available via Backward Compatibility on the Xbox Series X / S and PS5.
