Steam user issues PSA about controller lighting options

Steam controller support is very good in 2022, with full integration for a wide range of controllers that goes beyond Microsoft's Xbox pads. Valve implemented specific support for Sony's PlayStation 4 controller back in 2018, and the PlayStation 5 DualSense also works well - with several games even offering the ability to utilise some of its more advanced features such as the haptic feedback.

However, there's one nice little feature that is often overlooked by users, because it's buried in a slightly strange place in the menus that you might not think to check - especially given that most controllers are just plug and play, so you might not even have considered digging through the menus to see what else you can do with them.

Such was the case for Kinda Funny contributor Parris, who goes by vicious696 on Twitter. Parris posted a photo of his Xbox pad in front of Steam's "personalise your controller" menu, saying, "Was today years old when I realised I could change the colour of the Xbox home button in Steam."

You can play Stray with cute puppy dog instead

BlueTwelve and Annapurna's cyberpunk cat adventure game Stray has only been out a short time and it's already one of the best games of 2022, but if you're more of a dog person, this Stray mod turns the game's feline star into a cute puppy dog.

Stray mods are beginning to trickle in, partially thanks to how easy the game is to add mods to - for the most part, all you have to do is drag a mod's files into the game's directory and it'll work. We've already seen a first-person mode added, and now there's one for the dog people.

The Stray dog mod 'Happy Puppy' is available at NexusMods and does exactly what you'd expect - replacing the adorable ginger cat player character with an equally adorable black and white puppy dog. You can now play through all of Stray as a dog instead, and modder Chris Rubino even remembered to replace the meows with barks instead - well, most of them. The mod's still in development, after all.

Terraria 1.4.4 wolf necklace evokes Zelda: Twilight Princess

Terraria fans with a penchant for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are in luck, because a new Terraria 1.4.4 accessory coming to the crafting game's Labor of Love update allows players to transform into a wolf in the style of Link in the GameCube game. The wolf form gives players more mobility but still allows them to use their regular equipment.

The new item was revealed in a special video by YouTuber ChippyGaming, who was given the opportunity to show it off as thanks for their continued support of the indie game. To demonstrate it, Chippy has to create a special character called 'Wolfpet,' but Re-Logic developer Whitney 'Cennxx' Spinks confirms that the item will also be obtainable via normal means in update 1.4.4.

Once in-game, he notes that a new item - Lilith's Necklace - is equipped to his character's mount slot, which says that it "Grants the wearer the power of the wolf." Upon pressing the mount button with the item equipped, Chippy's character is instead transformed completely into a wolf.

Doom is finally getting skeletal models and ragdolls

The Doom mods community continues to create some truly impressive add-ons for id Software's iconic FPS game, from ray tracing to proper vampire support. Now, it seems the GZDoom world is working on proper skeletal model animation - which even Quake doesn't have, and could lead to proper head tracking and even ragdoll death animations. Yes, all in 1993's Doom.

Doom has very basic animations and that's part of its charm, but the GZDoom modding community is working on adding the Inter-Quake model (IQM) format to give modders access to better quality character and enemy animation.

As pointed out by GZDoom developer Nash Muhandes, creators including Shiny Metagross and dpJudas have actually finally got these IQM models working in Doom. The developers plan to add scripts for different bone manipulation functions for modders to use, including head tracking, individual limb movement, and yes, even ragdoll animation.

Skyrim mod lets you transform into a dragon

Skyrim is all about dragons, so it only seems reasonable that you should be able to become a dragon yourself eventually, and now a new Skyrim mod lets players transform into one of several different weredragon forms in the RPG game. Each dragon variant comes with its own unique benefits and detriments, and the mod also includes a custom perk tree which allows users to utilise dragon souls to power up their lizard potency.

The Feral Dragon Avatar mod, created by KataPUMB, adds a new unique shout to the open-world game which can be earned through a small quest unlocked after reaching level 10. The 'Fel-Dov-Aan' shout can then be used to transform into a scaly weredragon form. Previous mods have adapted the game's werewolf form to somewhat similar effect, but KataPUMB says of that approach: "it works, but not quite how I would like, so I made this."

Once in dragon form, you can use any combination of shouts and lesser powers, and you also have the ability to loot items and objects without needing to transform back into your humanoid form. However, you can't equip items or spells except for shouts and voice-related powers while you are a dragon. Perhaps most amusingly, NPCs will recognise your new form, meaning that guards will treat you as a dragon and address you accordingly.

Halo and Doom devs are making a new Unreal Engine 5 FPS game

Ex-Bungie developers working on Halo Infinite are working on a new, original FPS game too, based on Unreal Engine 5. Certain Affinity has worked on games in franchises such as Halo, Doom, and Call of Duty, and now it looks like the team has an original FPS of its own coming.

As spotted by @IdleSloth84 on Twitter, Certain Affinity studio is working on a "new, original IP" according to certain LinkedIn pages. Furthermore, there's a job listing for this new IP's game director position with further details. The game is an "original IP first-person shooter" and a "games as a service" title - which, given the team's experience with the likes of Destiny and Halo Infinite multiplayer, isn't too much of a surprise.

"We're best known for co-developing numerous AAA FPS games," the listing states, "though now we are creating compelling new games of our own." As for Unreal Engine 5, the bottom of the listing also requests "development experience with UE4 and/or UE5."

Diablo Immortal dungeon queues are frustrating its players

Most of Diablo Immortal's endgame activities are designed around playing the RPG game in multiplayer, but some fans sick of Diablo Immortal dungeon queues and its party system are asking for more ways to engage in activities solo. Previous games in the series have been viable to play alone, but players who prefer tackling the demonic hordes by themselves are finding themselves out of luck in Blizzard's latest game.

Several posts on the Diablo Immortal subreddit, which is where Blizzard currently recommends that players offer feedback and suggestions, are asking the developer to make its game more solo player friendly. One post, from someone who describes themselves as a "lone wolf" type of player, says "Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy raids (Lassal and Vitaath runs) but that is about as far as my interest goes with grouping with other players."

They say that they have enjoyed the game thus far, and were happy to engage with the Shadows faction system, but decided to stop playing once they realised that they would have to group for dungeons and lairs if they wanted to get their hands on set items. Other players in the comments echo the sentiments, with players on mobile emphasising that the need to wait to queue for a group to run dungeons feels antithetical to the game's easy jump in, jump out play sessions.

Arknights: Prelude to Dawn Trailer

Yostar and Hypergryph conducted the 2.5 year anniversary stream for the global edition of Arknights on July 23, 2022. Alongside previews of the upcoming anniversary event, a new trailer for Arknights: Prelude to Dawn, the anime adaptation of the game, was shown.

The trailer features new footage from the show, as well as voice acting in Japanese by Tomoyo Kurosawa, who plays Amiya.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brkx0yLJ260

The setting and catalyst for events in the game world of Terra is clarified a bit more in the traile for Arknights: Prelude to Dawn. Amiya's speech reveals that Originium, the fictional material that powers all manner of technology and Arts (magic) in Arknights' world is also the source of Oripathy. Oripathy is an incurable disease caused by exposure to Originium. While some gain unusual powers and abilities due to their Oripathy symptoms, most "Infected" are doomed to a painful existence. Infected sometimes form Originium crystals on their skin or organs, and even explode when they die. Infected are segregated away by various Terran governments and persecuted mercilessly.

Rhodes Island, Amiya's and the player's organization, is a pharmaceutical company/paramilitary outfit researching cures for Oripathy and advocating for better treatment of Infected. As seen in the Arknights: Prelude to Dawn trailer, their opponent is Reunion. Reunion is an organization made up of Infected, waging armed insurgency against Terran governments in the name of the Infected. Reunion Commanders like Mephisto and Crownslayer are visible in the trailer.

Arknights: Prelude to Dawn is in production, though does not have a premiere window. The game is available on iOS and Android. Check out the previous trailer for the anime.

Arknights 2.5 Anniversary

The global edition of Arknights sees its 36th month in operation soon. This milestone is enough for Yostar and Hypergryph to call it an anniversary and celebrate. The Arknights 2.5 Anniversary stream previewed new content and events for the game. Coming soon is a limited-time Arknights event, called "Invitation to Wine". Like Who is Real and Ancient Forge before it, Invitation to Wine is a Lunar New Year event, rescheduled to adapt to the global edition's event pacing.

Check out an anime trailer for Invitation to Wine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpgRVVZQKB8

Like previous related Arknights events, Invitation to Wine involves a sister of the Yanese Operator Nian. Where Who is Real introduced Dusk, the eleventh of Nian's siblings, Invitation to Wine focuses on Ling, third eldest. Ling is a carefree poet who can manipulate dreams. All three of the siblings (and their other, unidentified sisters) are fragments of Sui, a powerful Yanese deity. While another new character, Lee, investigates the provenance of a mysterious wine cup, the Rhodes Island Operators Kroos and Mr. Nothing enter the heartland of Yan to track down Ling.

The Arknights Invitation to Wine event kicks off on July 29, 2022 and ends on August 12, 2022. It'll bring with it a new Headhunting banner. On it is Ling, as a limited unit, while Lee will join the general pool of potential recruits. Another banner will give players a new opportunity to recruit Nian and Dusk, who are normally limited units. Since it's the 2.5 Anniversary of Arknights, players will have a free roll each day of the event on Ling's banner. They'll also get a free ten-roll ticket when the event goes live. Other new Operators for the Invitation to Wine event include Blacknight (not to be confused with The Black Knight from the "Break the Ice" event), and Kroos the Keen Glint. Kroos the Keen Glint is a 5-Star Alternate Operator upgrade of low-rarity mainstay Kroos. She'll have a new look and upgraded skills and talents.

Besides detailing the Invitation to Wine event, Yostar and Hypergryph previewed the Arknights anime with a new trailer. They also released a new "lore" video detailing some of the nations in the game world of Terra. This second "Discovered Terra" video gives an overview of the Arknights world map, describing the different factions that have appeared in the game's main story and events.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWU98QTH25A

The Arknights 2.5 Anniversary celebration is ongoing. The Invitation to Wine event begins on July 29, 2022. The game can be played on iOS and Android devices. Check out the previous "Discovered Terra" video for descriptions of areas involved in earlier parts of the story.

HoYoVerse has released another trailer for the upcoming Sumeru region in Genshin Impact. As a reminder, Sumeru will come out in Version 3.0, which is the next update after the current Version 2.8. While the first trailer focused on the concept of the Dendro element, the "Of Rain and Sand" video takes a look at the actual region players will get to explore.

Unlike previous regions, which remains fairly consistent in biome, Sumeru will have a rainforest section and a desert one. The rainforest will have lots of mountains and tropical flora. As well, the desert will have ruins and oases, as well as caves. As Genshin Impact is a fantasy game, the team did not want the designs to look that realistic, though it did incorporate real-life designs as influence.

You can watch the full video and interview behind the design of Genshin Impact's Sumeru region here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2l9IpLVgXQ

Some characters who will appear in Sumeru include Collei, Tighnari, and Dori. There is no official information as of yet in regards to their rarity and whether they will be immediately available in the gacha when Version 3.0 launches.

Genshin Impact Sumeru debuts following the 2.8 update. If Version 3.0 comes out as soon as Version 2.8 ends, then it has a tentative release date of around August 24, 2022. The game is available on PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Collecting conches in the current Summertime Odyssey event will grant players a free costume for Fischl.
