Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 on Switch was a mess from the start. Like the original game's buggy and incomplete release back in 2004, last year's port to Nintendo's handheld hybrid launched with a bug that made the game impossible to beat for some players. Subsequent patches added other issues. And now…

Steam's pioneering scariest game gets official mod support

Amnesia The Dark Descent was a special moment in gaming. The original Amnesia, released by developer Frictional Games in 2010, was one of the first real standout horror games that broke big on the YouTube scene. Sure, scary games weren't a new idea, far from it - even Doom had its own moments of terror back in 1993 - but Amnesia felt new and exciting, and it led us into a world of watching others, people we might not even know, screaming, cowering, and crying their way around its misty corridors.

Titanfall meets Tony Hawk in this astounding movement-driven FPS

Upcoming shooter Echo Point Nova is a blend of Titanfall and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater; that's the only way I can think to describe it and do it any semblance of justice. An FPS game all about incredibly fast movement, I got to try out the game and chat with the lead developer ahead of the demo's release, and it could quite easily be one of the coolest games of this year.

Insta-win Destiny 2 glitch forces Iron Banner changes

This might be the most broken Destiny 2 glitch I've seen in some time. Destiny 2's Iron Banner is presented as one of the pinnacle activities in the multiplayer game, a place where the best of the best can prove their worth in glorious combat. That's all changed this week as a glitch allows players to exploit the Khepri's Horn exotic to near-instantly win matches. Evading initial attempts to fix the issue, this game-breaking Destiny 2 bug has ultimately forced Bungie to entirely change the game mode being played, leaving players a little sad to see it go.

Best Diablo 4 builds from Blizzard devs and our experts

What are the best Diablo 4 builds? From the haunted forests of Scosglen to the whispering winter winds of the Fractured Peaks, choosing the best Diablo 4 builds is a must for avid fans of Blizzard's RPG. While I could bore you with horrible, mid-tier troll builds, I've got something better. From PCGamesN's exclusive interviews with some of Sanctuary's finest, I have a list of the builds that the developers are obsessed with so that you can try them, too.

Of the five current Diablo 4 classes, the developers lean very much towards the enchanting Sorceress and her myriad of different elemental magics. I, however, will be locking in Diablo 4's Rogue when the release date rolls around, so have included my personal favorite Diablo build for those who prefer to spend their time scheming away in the shadows. Additionally, we've also got all of the links out to our dedicated build guides down below, which we created after many hours of hands-on time. You can read more about that in our Diablo 4 review for a full rundown.

Diablo IV Salvage Legendary Gear

Diablo IV features a loot system that will keep players grinding for gear for hours, but as your inventory fills up you may be asking yourself if you should salvage or sell the items you've obtained during your journey. It's definitely something circumstantial, but generally, salvaging your gear will be the way to go for a myriad reasons. Salvaging of any kind can be done at any Blacksmith, and salvaging items not only allows you to recycle old gear into cosmetics, but you also get extremely valuable materials by doing so.

Players will generally always want to salvage gear in Diablo IV, with the exception of Legendary items. Until you obtain the Codec of Power you're looking for to complete your ideal build, you will want to extract Legendary Aspects from Legendary gear at the Occultist. After this, you will want to salvage Legendary items in order to obtain the extremely valuable Baleful Fragment material. That can be obtained through salvaging Legendary items, to reapply Codecs of Power and extracted Legendary Aspects to new pieces of gear. While you may be concerned about gold, given that it can feel relatively hard to come by, it is always advisable to salvage instead of sell. Since Legendary drop rates will remain relatively low, even when playing on higher world tiers, you will want to make sure you have enough materials to create your desired build.

[caption id="attachment_966400" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Diablo IV Salvage Legendaries Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption]

That said, early on in the game, if you find yourself with a plethora of common items, you can feel free to sell them. Rares should always be salvaged for Veiled Crystals, however. Additionally, if you're finding yourself low on funds, you can always do World Events or even dungeons to obtain gold. Gold is a standard drop, unlike the items received from salvaging gear, which are sometimes distributed at random or can be found through certain caches. Ultimately, you always want to work towards end game and material consumption will be high when applying Aspects to weapons, or even leveling up your gear.

Diablo IV is available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Apparently Opens Up After Leaving Midgar

For the second day in a row, Square Enix offered a development update on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Things started on June 2, 2023. Now on June 3, 2023, there are details about what to expect now that Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and Red XIII left Midgar. Director Naoki Hamaguchi brought up how much opportunity we'll have to explore, and noted there'll be a "high degree of freedom." However, the response doesn't note how much of the world we'll see in the second part of this three-part trilogy.

Here's Hamaguchi's exact response. In addition to claiming this second part of Final Fantasy VII Remake will offer freedom to go across a "wide and multifaceted world," it also cites different stories. This could be referring to different sidequests we saw in the original game, as well as mainline missions that saw the group headed to places like Junon, Gold Saucer, and Corel Prison.

In the first developer comment in June 2023, Producer Yoshinori Kitase said development was going well and the team was working on picking a release date.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth still has a Winter 2023 release window, and it will launch on the PlayStation 5. The first part of the story, Final Fantasy VII Remake is available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

lord of the rings gollum review

In bygone days, video games based on TV shows and popular movies were usually hit or miss. The Harry Potter entries likely wouldn't hold up to the test of time, nor would the ones for The Chronicles of Narnia. They're mostly there to piggyback off the success of the property they're based on, after all. Though Daedalic Entertainment likely did not make The Lord of the Rings: Gollum in order to fit that particular niche, it certainly feels like it. With its poor appearance, uninspired gameplay, and lack of a meaningful plot, playing through The Lord of the Rings: Gollum feels as treacherous and miserable as the journey to Mordor. At least there was a point to Frodo's journey.

If you know anything about The Lord of the Rings, then you basically already know the plot of Gollum. Chronologically, it takes place after the events of The Hobbit, when Bilbo takes the One Ring from our titular protagonist. After Aragorn captures him, Gollum recounts to Gandalf his escape from Barad-dûr. He works as a slave, all while struggling to maintain mental balance between his Smeagol persona and his Gollum one. That's essentially the plot. Gollum does eventually break out and make his way to Mirkwood, which is where Aragorn finds him. But the main meat of the game places the wretched creature in Barad-dûr.

[gallery columns="2" link="file" ids="965413,965414"]

Stories with a foregone conclusion are not bad in and of themselves. Anyone who knows anything about Fate/stay Night went into Fate/Zero knowing exactly how it was going to end. But we still enjoyed watching it, because the journey was fun and it introduced new concepts, characters, and dynamics. We all know that Gollum escapes. That's not really the interesting part of his journey. So what about this segment of his life is so important, either to Gollum's character development or the overarching lore of Middle Earth, that we should care about it? It's the lack of an answer to this question that can makes The Lord of the Rings: Gollum feel meaningless.

Perhaps if the game focused more on the struggle between Smeagol and Gollum, it would feel like it had a point. For example, we could have learned that Smeagol was more dominant until something in Gollum made his evil side take control until he meets Frodo. We do get some of this in the "Convince Gollum" mechanic. However, the implementation of this feels so lazy. First off, the font prioritizes readability, so much so that it is jarring to see in a high fantasy game. Secondly, it's such a static screen. Different camera angles or animations might have made it feel more engaging. Finally, the choices also don't affect much of anything, whether it was the story or Gollum's actions himself. This is a shame, because it renders these choices pointless and downgrades the complexity of Gollum's character.

[caption id="attachment_965415" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]The Lord of the Rings Gollum choices Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption]

The entire game is also so difficult to look at, from a lighting and graphical point of view. It's too dark to see much of anything... not that there was anything too interesting to see. I also didn't like using Gollum's sharp senses, because the screen looked like it was from an alpha build. The textures didn't always load immediately either. That's not fantastic, because it was impossible to tell which walls were ones Gollum could interact with while moving about. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, which worked fine for other recent games like Resident Evil 4. So Gollum looking like a PS3-era title was likely not an issue on my end. Aside from Gollum's facial model making him look like a frog, his hair also stood out. Something about the texture really reflected the light, which made it look awkward in certain scenes.

[caption id="attachment_965416" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]The Lord of the Rings Gollum sneak Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption]

Finally, the main meat of the game—parkour action was hardly satisfying. You sneak around Barad-dûr, climbing about and ambushing soldiers. Gollum looks like a wet paper bag and has the endurance of one, so getting caught almost certainly means death. You could only perform basic actions (I guess since Gollum isn't that athletic) that felt bad due to Gollum's slippery physics and large size. The dark environments and poor textures I mentioned earlier also meant that I died due to dumb reasons like not seeing ledges or not realizing Gollum couldn't scale a particular wall. There were also a lot of objects that I know for a fact he could grab that he simply wouldn't, which lead to some frustrating deaths. Parkour can be fun in games! But not when it's the same three actions over and over again for ten hours.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum does not feel like a game with a 2023 release date. It pains me to say, especially since Daedalic Entertainment released an apology in regards to the final state of the game, but it feels like it needed a complete restructure of its basic premise. Instead of making parkouring around the stages the main point, it should have hard-focused on stealth-killing and even implemented a morality system. Choices that actually matter would make the Smeagol versus Gollum sections more interesting. It's a game that seems like it's for hardcore The Lord of the Rings fans, considering its playable character and the lack of recent releases for the franchise, but even diehard fans couldn't enjoy this unexpected journey.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It will also come out for the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2023.
